Prof, Dept. of General Studies, International Islamic University Malaysia (M.A & Ph.D, ISTAC) Dr Mohd Zaidi Ismail Director Centre for Science and Environment Studies of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (M.A & Ph.D, ISTAC) Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ssekamanya Siraje Abdullah Institute of Education International Islamic University Malaysia (M.A, IIUM, Ph.D, ISTAC) Topic & Synopsis: Topic 1 by Dr. Adi Setia Md. Dom: Kalam of the Age (Kalam al-'Asr): A Neo- Ghazzlan, Attasian Perspective Synopsis: This talk touches on the conceptual and operational relevance of the new theological dialectics developed by al-Ghazzl in his Tahafut for our current efforts to articulate an effective De-Westernization and Islamization of the sciences, especially as applied by Professor Syed Muhammad al-Attas in his exposition of the Worldview of Islam, and of Islam's engagement with secularism. Some particular case-studies in medicine, agriculture, economics, physics, mathematics are brought up to substantiate the thesis of relevance. Topic 2 by Dr Mohd Zaidi Ismail: Al-Ghazzl on Thinking: The Tawd-and-Adab-Oriented Approach

Synopsis: This talk seeks to highlight two important lessons pertaining to the tawd-and-adaboriented approach to thinking which can be derived from al-Ghazzls major works, one of them concerning the relation between memorizing and thinking while the other having to do with the relation between creative and critical modes of thinking. Topic 3 by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ssekamanya Siraje Abdullah: Islamization of Contemporary Knowledge: Lessons from al-Ghazali's Encounter with Greek Philosophy Muslim societies today are threatened by Western technological, intellectual and cultural hegemony which both results from and further enhances globalization. Islamization of knowledge was suggested by Muslim scholars as one of the ways of facing the intellectual challenges of western theories and methodologies. However, with the exception of the Islamization approach of Prof. Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas which is rooted in the Islamic intellectual tradition, particulary in the works of the Sufi masters, most Islamization efforts could be characterised as shallow and somehow detached from the intellectual history of Muslims. Based on a critical examination of the life and works of al-Ghazali, this study argues that alGhazali's approach should be taken as the model for today's Islamizers if their efforts are to bear any positive fruits. His approach in facing the challenge of falsafa (which epitomized all of the alien sciences and methodologies) emphasized the necessity of mastering the alien sciences before critically analyzing and rejecting whatever is contrary to the basic principles of Islam while adopting whatever agrees with the Islamic teachings and is deemed useful for Muslims.
