Christmas and New Years
Day have passed and we have ten
more weeks of cold winds, snow,
and ice to tolerate in the Buckeye
State. Our winter weather does
help us appreciate indoor activities
like basketball watching, and it
primes our enthusiasm for the
sports of spring and summer.
There are undoubtedly lots of
Little Leaguers in Mercer County
who dream someday of playing in
the Majors and older youngsters
who still enjoy those dreams of
years past.
A year ago this time, Marion
Local grad, Corey Luebke, was
rooming with some college
buddies in Columbus and working
regularly with his trainer. In
September of 2010, he was called
up to the big club and made his
first three starts in the majors. The
San Diego Padres baseball press
was mostly positive about Corey
a year ago this time, but saw him
as a prospect, starting 2011
in the minors with a wait and
see situation for the near future.
Corey has been a starter his entire
baseball career, but threw so well
last spring that the Padres decided
he deserved a shot as a Big League
reliever and he made the opening
day roster. Corey was led to
believe he would be sent down
to the minors later in the year to
get in the necessary innings to
further his development, but he
did an excellent job out of the pen
early in the year and was promoted
to a starting position. The minor
league plans went
on hold. At the end
of the year his won-
lost record was
6-10 for the Padres,
who had the worst
offensive numbers
for any club in Major
League baseball. His
individual stats in
2011 were: Earned
Run Average - 3.29,
Total Strikeouts -
154, Total Walks
- 44, Walks, Hits per Innings
Pitched - 1.07, near the best in each
category for all Padre pitchers. His
139.2 innings pitched were fourth
highest for all Padres hurlers.
This January, Corey is not
a prospect hoping to impress
people at Spring training and
attempting to find a spot on the
big league roster. Instead, he is
penciled in as a solid member
of the Padres starting rotation.
Success however, has not
changed the young man. He
still lives with the same school
friend in Columbus, uses the
same trainer he first employed
three years ago, and listens to
Mom and Dad.
Corey acknowledges that
Major leaguers stay in world
class hotels, and travel and eat
the same way. That life style
is great, but Corey mentioned
many fans do not appreciate
the constant pressure facing
most professional players.
Except for some veterans on
long term contracts, younger
major and minor league
players are under day-to-day
scrutiny to advance or hold
their spot in the program. A bad
performance or series of bad
days can curtail a career in the
Majors or Minors. At times even
good days do not seem to work.
Corey recounted the situation of
a friend who signed and entered
pro baseball at the same time as he
did. His friend advanced and did
an excellent job at other levels, but
for some reason never got The
Call. Corey said the truism, You
can only control what you can
control, has helped him maintain
a stable attitude and succeed in the
sometimes unpredictable life of
pro ball.
Corey helped explain why he
needs to be constantly on his game.
While rehabbing a muscle pull in
the Spring of 2010 following his
first major league spring training,
he was a spectator at a rookie
league game. Checking on the
gun, he saw five young upstarts all
throwing around 95 mph. Corey,
a major league fastball pitcher,
normally tops out with his fastball
at 93 mph, and these kids new
to the pro game were throwing
harder. He explained that raw
speed is important, but location
and movement are perhaps more
important. A pitcher may be
able to constantly hit the outside
corner, but the ability to locate
inside as well as outside and up in
the zone as well as down, is a key

Your 401(k) offers tax-deductible contributions, tax-deferred growth of
earnings potential and a variety of investment options so its a great tool
for building retirement savings. Yet like all tools, your 401(k) must be used
properly to get the best results. Thats why you should review your 401(k) at
least annually and make whatever adjustments are needed.
Depending on where you work, you may get some 401(k) review help
from your plan provider. But if that assistance isnt available, you might want to
consult with a financial professional to make sure youre getting the maximum
benefit from your plan.
As you begin to review your 401(k), your first question should probably
be this:
How much should I contribute? At the very least, try to put in enough to
receive your employers matching contribution, if one is offered. If you dont
earn this match, you are essentially walking away from free money. Beyond
this, though, the amount you put into your 401(k) might depend on what other
retirement savings vehicles you have available. For instance, if youre eligible,
you may also want to contribute to a Roth IRA, which offers tax-free growth
potential, provided youve had your account for five years and dont start
taking withdrawals until youre 59.
Of course, its not only how much you put into your 401(k) that determines
its success its also how you choose to allocate your investment dollars.
(Keep in mind that asset allocation does not guarantee a profit or protect
against loss.) Your 401(k) may have a dozen or more investment choices,
such as stock funds, bond funds and money market funds. To choose the right
investment mix, youll need to consider a variety of factors, including these:
Your age Generally speaking, the younger you are, the more
aggressive you can afford to be with your 401(k) investments, because
youll have decades in which to potentially overcome the inevitable down
periods of the market. As you get older, you may wish to invest somewhat
more conservatively, but youll still need some growth potential in your 401(k)
portfolio.
Your goals Everyone has different goals for retirement. You might
want to retire early and travel the world, while your co-worker desires to
work as long as possible and then, upon retirement, stay close to home and
pursue hobbies. Because you each have different goals, with different income
needs, you also may need to follow different investment strategies within your
401(k).
Your other retirement income sources If you have a variety of
retirement income sources a pension from another job, an IRA, a spouse
with generous retirement benefits you may need to invest differently,
perhaps less aggressively, than if you had fewer options for retirement
income.
Apart from putting away as much as you can into your 401(k) and
choosing the right investment mix, what else can you do to get the most out
of your plan? Heres a suggestion: If you have worked at various jobs and
acquired multiple 401(k)s, consider rolling them over into one account. You
might save money on fees and reduce paperwork, but more importantly,
youll be able to concentrate your resources and pursue a unified investment
approach, with your investment dollars working together toward your ultimate
retirement goals.
As you can see, a 401(k) review and rollover can reward you in many
ways so do whatever it takes to maximize your 401(k)s performance.

If youre of a certain age, the new year means youre that much closer to a day you may have anticipated with
a combination of humor and resignation specifically, the day youre eligible for Social Security. But just because
you can take Social Security, it doesnt mean you must take it. So, should you?
Before we get to that question, lets review the basic rules governing Social Security payments. You can typically
start collecting benefits at age 62, but youll get only about 75% of what youd receive if you waited until your full
retirement age, which varies according to your birth year but is most likely 66. Youll get even bigger monthly checks
if you delay collecting them until youre past 66, and youll max out on your payments once you reach 70.
So, the question boils down to this: Should you start collecting Social Security early thereby receiving smaller,
but more numerous, checks or later, when your checks will be bigger but fewer?
If you really need the money once you reach 62, youve already got your answer. But if you could potentially
afford to wait, we recommend you view your decision through a LENS:
* L: Your projected lifespan You cant see into the future, but given your family history and general health,
you can make an educated guess about your projected longevity. If youre fairly confident that, once you reach 66,
youve still got another two or more decades in front of you, you may want to consider delaying taking Social Security
past age 62.
* E: Your employment status If youre under full retirement age between 62 and 66 then for every two
dollars you earn over $14,640 (in 2012), youll lose one dollar in Social Security benefits. In the months before you
reach your full retirement age, for every three dollars you earn over $38,880 (again, for 2012), youll lose one dollar
in benefits. But starting in the month you reach your full retirement age, you can earn as much as you want without
losing any benefits.
* N: Your need, including your other sources of retirement income If you have a pension, or youve built
substantial resources in your IRA, your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan, and you can support
your income needs with modest withdrawals from these accounts, you might decide its worthwhile to delay taking
Social Security to maximize your benefits. Remember that regardless of your Social Security decision, you typically
would have to pay a 10% early withdrawal penalty if you started taking withdrawals from these accounts before you
reach age 59.
* S: Your spouse/marital status If youre single, you basically just need to think of yourself when making
this decision. But its a different story if youre married. If you die first, your spouse can keep receiving his or her
own Social Security benefit or receive yours whichever is larger. Consequently, you and your spouse will want
to coordinate when you take Social Security benefits so that you can maximize the benefit for the spouse likeliest
to live longer.

Every now and then I come
across some items I feel most of
the readers would enjoy. The one
I just came across is entitled Four
things Children have learned:
1. No matter how hard you try,
you cant baptize cats.
2. When your mom is mad at
your dad, dont let her brush your
hair.
3. You cant trust dogs to watch
your food.
4. You cant hide a piece of
broccoli in a glass of milk. I
enjoyed reading these so much I
thought all you good people out
there needed a good laugh today.
I dont know how most of
you feel about the prospective
presidential candidates, but I have
a great deal of trouble coming up
with one outstanding candidate
that could even come close to
wining in November. Just when
I get close to picking one that I
feel could maybe come close in
November he does something
dumb and I am right back to
square one. I realize it is a long
time between now and November
but that day will be here before
you think. Maybe those in a
position to make that decision had
better get busy.

Whats Happening Around the
Fort..
Everyone is talking and wondering
about the weather especially this time
of year. We are waiting for the big snow
fall of the season that we always seem
to get. I have heard of many ways of
predicting weather. Even with the high
tech equipment it is still not reliable
one hundred percent of the time. One
of the ways the old timers predicted
the weather was to use the first twelve
days of January. The first day would
represent the first month of the year.
This year if you remember New Years
Day was very mild. Meaning that
January would be mild. The second day
representing February was snowing and
cold which would mean that February
would be the month of the snow fall
and cold weather. The third day which
is representing March was mild and
sunny. So, my prediction for the winter
is to prepare for February, which if it
follows the rule of the old timers. this
will be the bad month for the winter.
Anyway it will be interesting to follow
this rule and see how it plays out.

the teacher would take the class to the
cafeteria to make this candy and then
they got to take some samples home.

Have you looked up, at the Mercer
County Courthouse lately? Have
you taken the time to admire the
workmanship of the stone masons who
created this masterpiece of stone work
in Mercer County?
Why was a new Courthouse needed
in 1923? Following World War I,
Mercer Countians were discussing
improvements throughout the County.
In response, the Mercer County
Commissioners created a Building
Committee by May 1920, with a goal of
a new Courthouse.
Architect and Contractor. Have
you considered how the architect
who designed and constructed this
Courthouse? June 29, 1820, Peter M.
Hulsken of the firm McLaughlin &
Hulsken, Lima, was appointed the
architect. Hulskens Associate was
Lyman Strong. The Commissioners
passed a resolution to issue bonds
to erect and equip this Courthouse.
February 26, 1921, the Commissioners
approved the specifications by Hulsken.
The Contract was awarded to O.M.
Green. Ground was broken in May
1921. Have you looked back into the
1920s at the tools to build this building?
Consider the railroad to move these
limestone columns to Celina, and then
the wagons taking them from the station
to the Courthouse?
Artists. Have you looked at the
stained glass window in the dome and
imagined the artist who created the idea
and then planned and implemented that
one of a kind, historical stained glass
window?
Greek and Roman Influence. The
limestone columns with the Ionic
Capitals with the scroll-like spirals,
called volutes, remind the guest of the
Greek Influence. Roman architecture
influenced domed buildings and this
Courthouse has a dome at the center
about the stairwell. The top floor of
the rotunda has a frieze of mythological
figures, whose themes date to Roman
and Greek history. Mythological
Griffins, the hounds of Zeus, who
never bark, were used in the designs
throughout the Courthouse.
The Dedication of the new Mercer
County Courthouse was held Monday,
September 3, 1923. Seventy five years
later, Mercer Countians celebrated the
75th Anniversary of this Courthouse.
In honor of this occasion, working with
the Mercer County Commissioners
and their Journals, I edited the book,
Mercer Countys Courthouses, Celina,
The Mercer County Courthouse
Architrave, which performs the
function of a beam, above the
limestone columns with Ionic
Capitals, has the stone wreaths,
recreating the Victors garland
of Laurel; photographed on the
Courthouse 75th Anniversary,
September 1998.

Celina Couple Receives Albert Heckler
Award from Cheryl Ann Programs
Louis and Dorothy Hoyng never imagined that theyd be-
come involved with Cheryl Ann Programs.
They were raising three happy, healthy boys in their Celina
home. Louie operated his custom upholstery shop next door,
and Dorothy worked in the high school cafeteria. They were a
typical family.
Then a very atypical thing happened. Their middle son,
Brian, was struck by lightning in 1981 when he was 16. With
that bolt out of the blue, the Hoyngs lives changed forever.
The odds of being struck by lightning are one in 280,000,
but the Hoyngs couldnt afford to spend much time thinking
about their terrible luck. They had a son who needed them
more than he ever had. The first years after Brians accident,
which left him with severe disabilities, were very difficult,
they said, as they searched for someone who could help them
help Brian.
Their school district helped as much as it could. Finally, then-
Superintendent Ralph Stelzer recommended a place the Hoyngs
knew about but had never visited as parents: Cheryl Ann.
Cheryl Ann was the best thing that ever happened to us,
Louie Hoyng said. It gave Brian his life back.
The people of Cheryl Ann helped Brian with his everyday
life. They gave him a place to go and jobs to do. He made new
friends, and enjoyed everything about his experiences there,
up to and including the bus ride out to Mud Pike.
When he would see Sam Morden (his bus aide) he would
just smile, and the people in Adult Day Services really knew
how to make him laugh, Dorothy Hoyng said.
It wasnt long before the Hoyngs were finding ways to re-
pay Cheryl Ann for its help. They were regular volunteers.
Louie Hoyng completed upholstery jobs for the unique
equipment used at Cheryl Ann, and often, said Superintendent
Mike Overman, Louie would forget to send us a bill. He
also served a term on the county MRDD board and was the
board president.
For all that, and for their tireless advocacy on behalf of
their son, the Hoyngs received the Albert Heckler Award at
the staff appreciation banquet in March. The award is given
each year to a Cheryl Ann family that exemplifies service and
advocacy.
The Hoyngs both served as good examples of first-rate
advocates for their son, Overman said. They rarely ever
missed a day spending time with him, and they always spoke
up to be sure his needs were being met. They were really spe-
cial parents for Brian, and really good supporters of our pro-
gram.
Brian Hoyng died in February 2008 at the age of 43. In the
years after the lightning strike he taught his family a lot about
patience, hope, endurance and acceptance. He introduced the
Hoyngs to a world they had only seen from the outsidebut it
was a world where they found welcome and acceptance.
We met some wonderful people during our years at Cheryl
Ann, Dorothy Hoyng said. They worked their hearts out
helping us with Brian.
Dorothy and Louis Hoyng
Stateline Writers Meet
At the April meeting of the Stateline Writers Club, members read
profiles they had written about someone, living or dead or make-
believe, and member Eileen Whitsetts special activity of having mem-
bers combine pictures of particular scenes with a person or people
assigned to them to put into that scene brought interesting results.
Sue Miller and Gretchen Bollenbachers proposal for a special
meeting designed to attract new members was described and approved.
Members will be hosted by the Coldwater Public Library in June for
a reading of their best work.
At the next meeting, which will be on Saturday, May 16, mem-
bers will rehearse for their special program in June.
Stateline club members meet the 3rd Saturday of each month at
10 a.m. at the Celina Mercer County Library. Anyone interested in
coming to a meeting or becoming a member is cordially invited to
attend.
Celina Rotary Dog Park Dedicated
BY: BETTY LOU DENNEY/HALL
Opening day at the Celina Rotary Dog Park received
rave revues from the dogs. As the gates opened for the first
time on Tuesday May 12, dogs of all sizes were seen mak-
ing their way to the park to get a chance to run in over 3
acres of wide open spaces of the chain-linked fenced in
area. Small dogs area is an acre and the large dogs have
over 2 acres. The new park, which is one of newest and
biggest things happening in the State Parks around the coun-
try, was made possible due to the efforts of Deborha Borns,
Rotary Club President. Her friend, Darlene Lynskey, is also
working on getting a State Dog Park in her home town of
St. Marys. The two dog lovers along with many volunteers
worked many hours with the help of the State and Craig
Morton, who is the regional manager of Grand Lake St.
Marys. Together they cleared away debris from the previ-
ously unused land. The Park is located at the end of West
Bank Road
Deb Borns saw her idea come to life with the help of the
Celina Rotary Clubs major donation and businesses as well
as individuals who helped with labor and monetary dona-
tions. The idea came to her after visiting another dog park.
At the dedication ceremony Deb thanked many of the
people who made the park possible. Jeff Larmore, Past
Rotary President and Celina City Council Member spoke
as his 150 pound Newfoundland, Bentley checked out the
park. Jeff is also a large contributor to the park in honor of
the recovery of Bentley after he had been lost for several
days. Craig Morton, Regional Manager of State Park Gand
Lake St. Marys and John Hunter, Assistant Chief of the
Division of Parks and Recreation also spoke at the dedica-
tion ceremony. Deb concluded her speech with some wise
lessons that she has learned from her own dogs. A few of
which were: Never leave home without your leach and
your ID. If you stare at someone long enough, you will get
what you want. Last, if it is not wet and sloppy it is not a
real kiss.
One of the many visitors enjoying running free on dedi-
cation day was a lab /poodle mix owned by Dave Hochstien,
professor at Wright State University. He has other dogs at
home but decided to only bring one at a time. He com-
mented that this was the first time his dog had this much
exercise since he got him a year ago.
There are a few small problems to work out with the
park, such as the water faucet would not shut off and there
was a small hole under the fence in the small dog side of
the park, which of course was found by one of the little
furry visitors on dedication day. These problems will be
easily fixed. Memberships ($10) to Fur Ever Friends are
being sold to help with the upkeep of the park. The use of
the park is free to the public. One of the additions they
would like to have is benches added to the park for the
comfort of the owners.
The green stations placed around the fence for the dog
wastes were given at a discount by Florida based company
named DogiPot. Gary Brown, Assistant Operations Man-
ger, heard about the plans for the park and wanted to help
by giving discounts on the pots. The company has all Oxi-
biodegradable bags inside the pots for your dog waste. Gary
flew in from Florida to be a part of the ribbon cutting and
opening of the park. More of their products can be found
by going to: www.propet.org.
If visiting the park remember to follow the rules that are
posted at the entrance. Common sense is your guide such
as:
Dogs should have their current shots
The park has little dog and big dog sections, keep
dogs in their own spaces.
Dont leave dog unattended
Do not bring a dog that shows aggressive behavior
Keep small children under close supervision
Clean up after your own dog
Never bring a dog to the park that has an illness.
These are just a few precautions to remember. Check
the rules before entering the park and you and your dog
will have a great time The Park is open daylight to dark
everyday.
Deb Borns prepares to cut the ribbon at the Dedication of the Celina Rotary Club Dog Park. Helping to hold the ribbon
is Darlene Lynskey and John Hunter, assistant chief of the Ohios Division of Parks and Recreation. On left is Craig
Morton, Regional Manager of Grand Lake St. Marys. Right: Jeff Larmore and Bentley. Photo by Roy Hall.

BY KIRK DOUGAL
Coldwater came out of the gate
slowly and fell behind Parkway in
their Midwest Athletic Conference
game on Friday night in Rock-
ford. But the Cavaliers halfcourt
trap defense gave the offense life
and helped propel the visitors to a
dominating 65-31 win.
Parkway started the game with
man-to-man pressure that ex-
tended into the passing lanes and
caused fve turnovers in the frst
three minutes of the contest. In
response, Coldwater coach Mike
Bruns dialed up his own pressure
by going to a trapping 1-3-1 zone
that attacked at the time line. The
result was plenty of Panther turn-
overs which led to easy transition
points. Once those shots started
falling, the jump shots found noth-
ing but net as well.
We knew they had some in-
experienced players because they
lost a lot of seniors, said Bruns.
Mixing up the defenses is def-
nitely one of our goals in this
game to keep them off track and
not let them get comfortable out
there. You dont want to get them
comfortable and confdent. You let
them get comfortable and conf-
dent and then theyll play with you
and youll be in a dog fght at the
end because they play hard and we
didnt want that to happen.
That defensive pressure and
runouts, plus three-pointers from
Austin Bruns, Mitch Heyne, and
two from Kyle Post, all fueled a
22-0 Coldwater run over a seven-
minute time frame. By the time
Parkway fnally stopped the bleed-
ing with 3:32 left in the second
quarter, the score was 25-8 and the
game was out of reach.
I think early on we came
out with good intensity, what we
wanted to have to start the game,
said Parkway coach Will Snyder.
We had a 6-3 lead and really had
about fve shots and I felt like if we
could have hit those, what a dif-
ferent game that could have been.
But, the more shots we missed, the
harder it was for us to shoot them.
That carried over defensively, too,
and then we put more pressure on
ourselves against that trap, even
though we beat it three or four
times early. Guys start to push and
then they worry.
The Cavaliers 1-3-1 halfcourt
trap caused 12 turnovers by Park-
way in the frst 16 minutes of play,
but when they did break the pres-
sure, the Panthers were usually
able to fnd Matt Heindel in the
middle. He used his quickness and
leaping ability to score 23 of his
teams 31 points, along with seven
rebounds.
Meanwhile the Cavalier offense
was a well-balanced machine with
fve different players scoring in
the frst period, four in the sec-
ond, fve in the third and six in the
fourth. They were especially hot
from downtown as they hit at least
one three-pointer in every quarter,
including four each in the second
and third periods when they put
the game away.
Coach Bruns was especially
happy to see his team not only get-
ting turnovers but converting them
into points.
Thats one thing we need to
continue to get better at, he said.
We got the late start (because of
football) and were trying to get
our offense in and trying to get
our defense in, and fnd chemistry.
Transition is something we are just
starting to work on in practice and
weve got to get better, especially
when you have a point guard like
Kyle Post who can lead that break.
That should be a strength of our
offense and enable us to score
more points.
Post led a balanced Coldwa-
ter attack that saw nine Cavaliers
break into the score book. He had
14 while Jeremy Scott added 12
points. Coldwater made 22 of 44
attempts from the feld for an even
50 percent, including a sizzling
10 of 22 (45%) from beyond the
arc. They also made 11 of 21 free
throw attempts, a 52 percent clip.
Heindel was the only Panther
in double fgures as he tallied 23
points. Parkway was 15 of 46
from the feld, 32 percent, and did
not make any of their nine three-
point tries. They made one of three
charity tosses (33%).
Coldwater won the battle of the
boards, 29-20, as Brandon Wolt-
ers led the way with ten rebounds.
Heindel led Parkway by snaring
seven. The Cavaliers also won the
turnover game, 17-18.
Coldwater is now 3-4 overall
and 1-1 in MAC play. Parkway
falls to 1-7, 0-2.
The Cavalier junior varsity also
took home a win, 63-41.

to success at the Majors. The ability
to effectively grip and control the
ball in different ways is vital for a
big league pitcher. Corey uses both
a two seam grip which results in a
sinking fastball, and a four seam grip
which produces more movement,
especially up in the strike zone.
It was his fastball, location, and
hard slider that has made Corey a
very successful strikeout pitcher at
all levels of his baseball career. The
baseball experts at the Bigs feel that
Corey would benefit if he could add
one more weapon to his arsenal, the
change-up. The change-up is not new
to Corey, but he added, At times
I can be a little stubborn. Corey
knows what got him from youth
league baseball at Maria Stein to
the Major League stadiums around
the country was his hard stuff. One
does not want to get beat with your
second best stuff, but Corey said
he made some excellent change-up
pitches especially later in the year,
but maybe most were in the bullpen
working with pitching coach, Darren
Balsley and Bull Pen coach Darrel
Akerfelds. Last year spring training
was an opportunity to excel and
perhaps make the squad. This year
Corey has already proven himself to
his superiors and can use springtime
to work and experiment on his off
speed stuff against Big League
hitting before it counts for real.
Despite how bright the future
shines for Corey, a Major League
pitchers arm is extremely stressed
and always subject to breakdown.
For those of us with pessimistic
tendencies, we are reminded of
stories of successful athletes unable
to deal with life after the attention
and money of the spotlight. Corey
appears to have things covered for
plan B after baseball. He was an
honor student at Ohio State before
he signed and has s few months
left to complete his degree. Big
time success appears not to have
caused him to forget two of the most
important rules he learned in Maria
Stein, Always work hard and dont
act like you are better than everybody
else.

The Celina Police Department
has begun reviewing statistic from
the 2011 calendar year. Overall,
traffic crashes were down, with an
8.1% decrease leading to a total of
351 reported crashes in 2011. The
2010 traffic crash count was 382.
Traffic crash counts appear to be
down at a state and national level
also, with the economy considered
to be a factor in that reduction.
However, within the City of
Celina, there were some specific
areas that showed increases in
traffic crashes.
Construction projects also had
an effect on traffic crashes. While
most of the downtown blocks of
Main Street have shown reductions
in traffic crashes during and after the
construction periods, the 400 block
of S. Main did show an increase to
4 crashes in 2011. In reviewing
these incidents it is apparent that
the construction project played a
direct role in this increase. This is
also the case in the 100 block of
West Market Street and the 100
and 200 blocks of East Market
Street, where construction detours
increased traffic congestion.
The most significant increase in
traffic crashes at the intersection
of SR 29 and Havemann Road,
where Havemann crosses the
4-lane section of SR 29 East. That
intersection was the site of three
times as many crashes in 2011 as in
2010. Of the twelve traffic crashes
reported in 2011, seven of them
resulted in injuries. This was a 700
percent increase from the single
injury crash that occurred at that
location in 2010. That means that
nearly 20% of the injury crashes in
the City of Celina in 2011 occurred
at the same intersection. The speed
of the vehicles involved in these
crashes has a significant effect on
the injuries that result.
In response to the dramatic
increase in that area the Celina
Police will immediately begin
a radar enforcement program
on State Route 29 east. While
it is obvious that a traffic signal
violation is involved in most
of the traffic crashes at this
intersection, the physical layout of
the intersection makes that type of
violation difficult to enforce. By
developing a speed enforcement
program on the four-lane section
of highway, officers will not only
have an effect on the number of
crashes, but also have a good
chance of reducing the number of
injuries from any crash that does
occur. Officers may not have
time to perform speed checks each
day, but radar enforcement will be
addressed on at least weekly basis.
The posted 50 mph speed limit will
be enforced for both eastbound and
west bound traffic on State Route
29.
Along with radar and laser speed
enforcement the department will be
working with the Celina Engineers
Office on steps that could be taken
to make the intersection safer. This
may include warning lights posted
before the intersection or changes
in the traffic light pattern. Grant
opportunities will be pursued to
help fund engineering changes
that area addressed. The Celina
Police Department will also use its
speed trailer as an educational tool
to insure that motorists realize the
reduced speed limits that apply to
highway once you enter the City of
Celina.

Check
the rules before entering the park and you and your dog
will have a great time The Park is open daylight to dark
everyday.

is Darlene Lynskey and John Hunter, assistant chief of the Ohios Division of Parks and Recreation. On left is Craig

NOVENA TO ST. BENEDICT
Glorious Saint Benedict, sublime
model of virtue, pure vessel of Gods
grace! Behold me humbly kneeling
at your feet. I implore you in your lov-
ing kindness to pray for me before the
throne of God. To you I have recourse
in the dangers that daily surround me.
Shield me against my selfishness
and my indifference to God and to my
neighbor. Inspire me to imitate you in all
things. May your blessing be with me al-
ways, so that I may see and serve Christ
in others and work for His kingdom.
Graciously obtain for me from God
those favors and graces which I need
so much in the trials, miseries and afflic-

and letters of family members. It
conveys how Jews were disliked in
parts of the world and how Hitler
was taking that dislike to a new
extreme. Their persecution was
dismissed as his way of restoring
Germany to its former position of
world prominence. The ruthless
ambition and true character of the
chancellor were not revealed early
on. Little by little, frightening
new laws were enacted and the
press censored. The ambassador
telegraphed his concerns to
Washington, where they fell to an
indifferent State Department. The
book partially explains why the
world did not recognize the danger
and threat of Hitlers regime and
how he was able to gain so much
power so quickly, with so little
opposition.
Erik Larson reveals the past
through the eyes and experiences
of William and his daughter
Martha. The Third Reich was
just coming into power and still
had other factions to deal with
before assuming complete control.
Within the German army there was
discord. Within the united States
government, there were differing
opinions. It seems the whole
world was distrustful of everyone
else. For four and a half years the
Dodds stayed in Germany until the
Ambassador was removed from
his assignment. During that time,
they were witness to unfolding
events that were a turning point
in history. They walked the lush
gardens, dined in the cafes, and
shopped in department stores
while making social acquaintances
with the Schutzstaffel (SS) officers
and officials of the SA (Storm
Troopers). The tense atmosphere at
the time was mixed with excitement
and romance before culminating
into ultimate horror. Hitlers rise
to power and emergence as an
absolute tyrant is told through this
nonfiction narrative.
As a fan of history, I never
understood how the world could
have allowed this dynasty to
begin. In the Garden of Beasts
shows how the warning signs, and
thus the true intent of Hitler were
ignored. Through the use of diaries
and memoirs the reader receives an
eyewitness account of the life of
the diplomat and his family during
their time in Germany. You can
find this book in the new nonfiction
section, 943.086 LAR.
The Celina Police Depart-
ment has received information
on a telephone solicitation
scam that offers area residents
a free cruise if you take a sur-
vey and give them a credit card
number for the port fees. This
number actually goes to a tele-
marketing firm that has been
involved in many different
telemarketing offers involving
telephone surveys about the
debt crises. The number in-
volved is (310) 362-7319, and
originates from California.
Calls such as this often in-
volve scams and you should
never respond by giving a
credit card number or other
personal identification infor-
mation to a subject that calls
you. Reputable businesses
understand the importance of
keeping personal information
secure and would not ask you
to provide such information to
them when they have called
you. Even when you initiate
the call, do not provide per-
sonal or credit card informa-
tion unless you are familiar
with the number or business
involved and can be assured
that you are talking the proper
company representative.

Recently seven childhood
friends, Jinnny (Braun)
Dobmeyer, Pat (Dues) Myers,
Karen (Forsthoefel) Carter,
Kathy (Hays) Gargis, Sue
(Myer) S ----, Janice (Niekamp)
Green and Connie (Rish) Haas,
who graduated together form
Coldwater High School in 1969
scheduled a trip to Washington,
D.C. The timing was all about
celebrating a milestone birthday
of 60 years somewhere special.
We had been getting together
for a long weekend for a number
of years.
We began our discussion a
year in advance of our actual
trip date and destination
needed to be set. Our selection
of destinations whittled down to
three, New York City, Charleston,
S.C., and Washington D.C.
Then, we deliberated down to
one Washington D.C., and our
planning began.
We converged in
Washingtons Reagan National
Airport from three points of
origination, Florida, Michigan
and Ohio, within an hour of
each other. From the airport,
our base of operation would be
two train stops and two blocks
away, a hotel in Old Town,
Alexandria, Virginia. The
town was adorable in that it
was old, cute and quaint, and
bustled with a lot of energy day
and night, not to mention all the
history that surrounds this small
port town.
Our first day was traveling,
getting settled and catching up.
The next four days were full,
getting up at 5:30 or 6:00 a.m.
each morning, to make the most
of each day. The next day was
prearranged with the office of
Congressman, Mike Turner,
friend of Karen Carter. We had
a scheduled tour of the White
House at 7:30 a.m., at which time,
we also got to see the Obamas
family dog, Bo, scurrying
through for his morning walk
outside. That was followed with
a tour of the Capitol, a brief
visit with Congressman Turner
in his office, a gallery seating
in the House of Representatives
during their chatter and a short
stint in the Library of Congress.
Whew! What a whirlwind first
day. We were exhausted.
Our second day was rainy,
so it was the perfect time to
spend inside some of the many
Smithsonian Museums. A
couple of us slipped over to the
Holocaust Museum. There was
so much to see, and not enough
time to see it all. A couple of
the highlights we saw were the
Inaugural Gowns and Dorothys
Ruby Slippers, which were a
light reminiscence of the past,
compared to the overwhelming
remnants of the victims shown
in the Holocaust Museum. All
in all it was a very powerful,
but, enlightening day.
The third day was beautiful
and we scheduled a tour with
a Tourmobile Company that
took us up, around and down
through the Mall area narrated
by an historian onboard. We
could get on and off at each
of the Memorials Lincoln,
Jefferson, the newest, Martin
Luther King, Jr. and all the
war memorials. While at the
Viet Nam Memorial Wall, we
had assistance from a veteran
to locate the name of Janice
(Niekamp) Greens cousin. The
veterans have special paper
and lead, and shadow over the
name on the Wall and give to
the requestor as a keepsake.
The War Memorials were all
beautiful and very moving, and
were being visited by many a
veteran while we were there.
The second part of our day was
spent at Arlington National
Cemetery, also narrated, and of
course, included the Changing
of the Guard at the Tomb of the
unknown Soldier and JFKs
Memorial.
Our final full day was another
beautiful one, and we spent it
perusing the Georgetown area,
shopping and admiring the
architecture. Our day concluded
with an early birthdays (7)
dinner celebration at a little
French Restaurant, La Ruche,
touted by the locals.
We initially planned to spend
an evening at one of the many
suggested restaurants in D.C.
and experience some of the D.C.
nightlife, but after getting back
to our hotel room at the end of a
hard run day, Old Town offered
enough cultural cuisine and
nightlife for we weary travelers.
Alexandria alone, is in itself, a
city worth a visit.
We, of course, saw the
Washington Monument, but it
was closed because of damage
sustained by the earthquake, as
was the Washington National
Cathedral. There was so much
more to see, such as the Ford
Theatre and Mt. Vernon to
mention a couple, but time could
not afford us to squeeze in one
more thing. We made one last
train trip from our hotel and said
all our goodbyes at the airport.
It was a wonderful time shared
with wonderful friends.
Washington D.C. is
an amazing city to visit.
Transportation via buses, cabs
and trains is easily accessible.
The architecture size and
detail is beyond words, and
the friendliness of unsolicited
strangers assisting in directions
was most welcomed. So, if you
have never been or havent been
there recently, you must put it
on your bucket list of places to
visit. It is a culmination of a
lot to be proud of in our great
nation.
Childhood Friends Share a Trip to D.C.
County Animal Clinic hosted a producers meeting recently to
introduce OxyBlast, a water treatment product. Ken Brown talked on the
benefits at a breakfast, assisted by Dr. Ron Anders, a local veterinarian
and local distributor. A food drive was also conducted for the area food
pantry. Many farmers were still harvesting and could not attend, so if
you would like information, contact County Animal Clinic at 419-678-
3610, and set up an appointment with Dr. Anders and Ken.

Holy Trinity Food Pantry in
Coldwater has been helping those
in need for over thirty years. It is
sponsored by the local church and
open Saturday mornings from 9-11.
Anyone in Mercer County is eligible
to receive help. Formerly located in
the old bus garage on the corner of
Market and Elizabeth streets, it has
recently moved to its new location
at 830 West Main Street. This was
previously Briarwood Manor and is
now owned by Mercer Health. With
much more storage space, this has
been a dream come true. Two large
rooms with shelving, four freezers
and two refrigerators enable those
in charge to accept items that at
times had to be declined due to lack
of space. Parking is conveniently
located to the east of the building and
customers can follow the sidewalk
through the gate, entering on the first
door to the right.
Although the parish officially
manages it, the volunteers are the
ones who keep it running smoothly.
A special envelope for the 5th
Sunday of a month is included in
the parishioners collection packets
and helps finance the pantry. But
it relies mostly on donations from
local residents. Those that are
especially useful are peanut butter,
jam, cereal and crackers, although
all contributions are accepted and
welcome. With the new facilities,
freezer meat is especially appreciated.
And like most of us, eating healthy is
on the minds of both the coordinators
and patrons.
A card is kept on each family
and they are welcome to come once
a month for one box and one bag of
staples, which include bread, eggs,
potatoes and onions, plus a coupon
for a gallon of milk. According to the
information collected, the package
will be enhanced to fit the needs of the
family. Less than half of those served
are from the Coldwater area, yet most
of the donations come from here. That
says a lot about the community.
Jesse Steinke and Rob Fisher were
the organizational leaders for many
years with Gary Klosterman now
joining them. There are twelve teams
of four to five volunteers staffing
the pantry on Saturday mornings.
These are on a rotating schedule,
with each team working about four
times per year. The clientele seem
to like the workers, who in turn
truly enjoy helping a worthy cause.
Approximately 100 people are served
each month. During the interview, I
learned that once a year, the organizers
go through and update the cards. They
find that most families used the service
only once or twice, helping them get
through some tough times. That made
Jesse smile, because its exactly what
he liked to see. He also told me that
the local people are VERY generous
with their gifts of money, food, time,
and supplies. Anyone wishing to
contribute can bring items to the food
pantry during operating hours or put
them in the collection boxes at the
entrances of Holy Trinity Church. For
frozen or refrigerated items, special
arrangements can be made by calling
the parish office. Non-perishables
can also be dropped off at the Mercer
County Chronicle office at 124 West
Main Street in Coldwater.

Question: My pet cries out and is sensitive when I rub behind his ears. Should I take him to the vet?
Answer: Yes! There are several reasons your pet may be tender around the ears. It could include any
of the following:
Ear infection including fungal, bacterial, and/or yeast infection.
Foreign object in the ear. i.e. grass, dirt, toys
Ruptured eardrum.
Wax accumulation in the ears.
Ceruminolith (firm wax ball) in ear canal causing pressure on the eardrum.
Middle ear infection that can be extremely painful.
Ear mites will crawl and irritate the ear canals.
Growth or tumors in the ear canal.
These are just a few of the things I have seen by doing an ear exam.
An ear examination includes an otoscope (a lighted scope that an look into the ear canal) exam. Now
scopes can be attached to a television screen so that the client can also observe what is going on at the
same time the veterinarian is looking in the ear canal. If an ear infection is noticed, then the ear should be
cleaned and flushed to remove excess wax and flush out the infection. Medication can then be instilled into
the ear to treat the infection. Systemic (oral) medication may also be used for the infection. Aswab can be
taken from the ear and examined under a microscope to determine the type of infection that is occurring.
If your veterinarian wants to keep giving you medication to treat the ear instead of flushing and clean-
ing the ear, then I would recommend a second opinion. Not all medications can treat all different kinds of
infection.
Foreign objects or chronic ear infections can lead to middle ear infections or a rupture tympanic mem-
brane (ear drum). This requires more specialized treatments since some medications can be toxic if the
ear drum is ruptured. Your veterinarian can determine the treatment of choice.
Do not place alcohol or peroxide in the ear canal as this can cause EXTREME PAIN.
Ceruminoliths (firm wax balls) can also be a source of pain for the ear. These can usually be extracted
by use of a surgical otoscope and a pair of miniature surgical tweezers or pliers. Sometimes these can be
attached to the ear drum or ear canal making them more difficult to extract. Sometimes the pet requires
sedation due to the difficulty to remove them.
Ear mites may be another source of problems especially if the pet as constant exposure to cats which
may be the source of the mites. The ear canals can be cleaned with mineral oil or baby oil then ear mite
medication can be instilled in the ears (these are prescription medications).
So you can see these are just a few of the problems that can cause ear problems. If you have any
further questions, you may contact your veterinarian to get further clarification.

Ohio, 1824-1998. The history of this
Mercer County Courthouse, as well as
the previous two Courthouses in Celina
and the first Mercer County Courthouse
on Court Street at Saint Marys, has been
preserved in this book. If you wish to
learn more about the history of Mercer
Countys four Courthouses, this book
serves the Mission Statement of the
Mercer County Historical Society: To
Preserve Mercer Countys History and To
Educate the Public about that History.
Do you know what County
Government Offices are in this County
Courthouse? Are you aware of all of
the County Government Offices as well
as all of the County Buildings? Mercer
County Commissioners now have their
Offices in another building, the Central
Services Building on Livingston Street.
We should all be proud of our heritage
of having one of the most beautiful
County Courthouses in the State of Ohio.
We should also be proud of the County
building, the Mercer County Historical
Museum, The Riley Home, and the
Mercer County Commissioners and the
Mercer County Historical Society for
preserving Mercer Countys history.
