Some Interesting Technical Details: Safe and Secure Storage Methods Only cord blood bank in Singapore that stores cord blood in multiple cryo units, giving the flexibility to use only what is needed Splits the storage of units at its two separately located laboratories as an added precaution

StemCord is the only cord blood bank in Singapore that stores cord blood in multiple cryo units for multiple usages

Advantages of Storing Cord Blood in Multiple Units Maximises the potential for multiple treatments Enables the storage of optimal concentration of cells per unit. No possibilities of cross-contamination as units are hermetically sealed. Each unit is specifically designed for long-term cryogenic storage at low temperature. Furthermore, with promising developments using stem cells in Regenerative Therapy, having stem cells in multiple storage units will provide the capacity for multiple treatments if needed.

The StemCord Advantage: Storage in Multiple Units

Multiple Units Allows for the release of part of the sample to be thawed, expanded, and used in treatment, while the remaining samples are left in storage for future use Optimal concentration of stem cells per unit Multiple usage especially with the onset of cell-expansion technology Some diseases, such as heart disease, stroke and spinal cord injury, require only one cryo unit of cord blood for therapeutic use Gives the option of splitting the storage into two separate locations Single Unit One-time use because once thawed, cord blood cannot be re-frozen No possibility of additional usage as the cell expansion bag is connected to the main bag and the whole unit has to be thawed together Cracks in bags have been documented and are detected only when the bags are thawed. If all stem cells are stored in 1 unit that has a crack, then there is no reserve for used in the future.

Stem Cells and Their Clinical Applications

What are stem cells?
Stem cells are the body's very early unspecialised master cells. They have two distinct characteristics: Can self-renew through cell division for the duration of our life Have the remarkable potential to develop into other types of cells and tissue, such as red or white blood cells, platelets, nerve cells, brain cells or even the cells of the heart. They serve as a repair system for the body, continuously replenishing other cells.

What are cord blood stem cells?

Cord blood stem cells are a perfect match for the baby and carry a significant probability of match in other family members. Studies consistently demonstrate that umbilical cord blood is an effective alternative source of haematopoietic stem cells (HSC) for adult transplantation with at least comparable results to other HSC sources for adult patients.

Who is suitable for cord blood banking?

Storing cord blood is suitable for every mother unless your obstetrician has cautioned you of a difficult or complicated pregnancy. It is also particularly useful and advisable for: Families with a history of blood disorder or other genetic diseases and cancers Small and single child families Pregnant mothers above 35 years old Sub-fertile couples Couples of different races The first born child.

What are the reasons for storing cord blood?

More and more families have chosen to collect, process and store their babys cord blood as it: Provides a safe, painless and non-controversial means of acquiring stem cells Has the potential to treat a range of diseases including a wide range of diseases including both common and cancers / blood disorders, such as the sickle cell anemia, thalassemia and leukemia Is generally preferred in stem cell transplantation because of a lower complication rate compared to bone marrow transplantation Can be readily made available should the need arise (if stored in a private cord blood bank), thus eliminating the time needed to search for a matching donors stem cells and allowing treatment to begin promptly Guarantees a 100% perfect match for the baby Can potentially increase the odds of having a match for their siblings and parents Is recognised as one of the most promising medical treatments for the future.
