PART II | ISSUES OF INTEREST

Please review the mission statement of the Stonewall Democratic Club of Greater Sacramento.

Mission Statement

Advance equal rights for all people regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity

Support public policies that advance lesbian, gay, bisexual, & transgender (LGBT) equality at all

levels of government

Elect qualified, openly LGBT people to public office as well as other Democratic Party candidates

who support LGBT equality

Work within the Democratic Party to advance LGBT equality and full recognition of LGBT families

Educate the public at large about LGBT issues and concerns

Promote the Democratic Party’s message of economic justice and social equality for all

  • 1. Do you support the goals and purposes of Sacramento Stonewall Democratic Club, as outlined

above?

( X) Yes

( ) No

  • 2. Identify one of the goals of the mission statement and elaborate how you have helped to achieve

one of the objectives. In the Spring of 2007, I organized a special panel celebrating the 40 th anniversary of the Loving Decision, the Supreme Court decision that made anit-mixed race laws unconstitutional. This event was sponsored by the Florin Japanese American Citizens League (JACL). The JACL spoke before the Supreme Court forty years ago in favor of mixed race marriages, and has consistently been in support of marriage equality for years. I was proud to have Boyce Hinman from Lambda Letters on the panel to connect the Loving Decision to marriage equality, both are basically about the government deciding who can marry whom.

My support goes deeper. In the mid 1990’s, Alexis Walker (an out Lesbian) was elected to President of the National Council on Family Relations (my professional organization at the time). There were some in this organization who felt that we had gone too far, and were against her leadership. Putting my career on the line, I led an effort to outwardly support her.

  • 3. Are you a member of the Sacramento Stonewall Democratic Club? If yes, how long have you

been a member? ( ) No

( X) Yes

  • 4. Are you registered as a member of the Democratic Party? ( ) No

My Doctorate in Human Development and Family Studies, with concentrations in Sociology, Anthropology, and Intercultural Communication is a multidisciplinary background that has an ethnic minority, childhood outcomes, and policy focus. From my very first “paid” experience assisting grade school teachers when I was in high school to most recently serving as a foster parent with the American Indian Child Resource Center, I have always gravitated to opportunities in child development. Experiences of note include the year I was a Computer Teacher and School Counselor for a private K-8 school in Hawaii and the semester I was an Assistant Head Teacher at the Oregon State University Child Development Center (Head Start). Also, I was a Homebased Family Therapist for Child and Family Services in Hawaii.
