Nominees for Council 2012 Executive Board

Two clergy and four lay persons are to be elected for three-year terms. One additional cleric to fill a oneyear unexpired term is also to be elected. Description of duties: The Executive Board is required to meet two times a year, but usually meets more often. The board functions in a way similar to a parish vestry, including preparing the diocesan budget and submitting it to Council for approval. The Executive Board appoints several departments and committees, including the Finance Department and the Nominating Committee. The Executive Board approves the designations regarding the World Mission funding opportunities (line 1b). Members of the Executive Board serve as liaisons to the various departments and commissions of the diocese. A knowledge of (and experience in) ministries representing the breadth of the diocese is an asset to persons who serve on the Executive Board. At the same time, a willingness to engage in diocesan ministry and learn of the breadth of the diocese is the most basic requirement for service on the Executive Board. CLERGY The Rev. The Rev. Philip May, Associate Rector, Church of the Good Shepherd, Corpus Christi Qualifications I am able to bring breadth and depth of experience to Executive Board. I was ordained in 1990, and have served as an assistant in a large suburban parish, searching for ways to engage prosperous but overscheduled families; as rector of a small parish, searching for creative ways to do ministry in cooperation with their neighbors, rather than in competition. I have served as rector of an established urban parish, trying new ways of engaging their changing neighborhood, while honoring their faithful past. Currently I am Associate Rector at Church of the Good Shepherd in Corpus Christi. These varied situations present the same challenges: how do we do more and more effective ministry with fewer resources? How do we creatively respond to our changing environments, while preserving our distinct, beautiful, and faithful Episcopal identity? These are the challenges of our diocese as well. I have lived in Texas for 12 years, and spent eight years assisting at St. Lukes on the Lake in Austin, so I have some insight into our church culture and our approach to ministry. I have also served and worshipped in other parts of our worldwide communion, and I can also bring a fresh perspective, when appropriate and helpful. It would be a great privilege to serve on Executive Board. Local Church Activities Associate Rector, Church of the Good Shepherd, Corpus Christi Length of time in Diocese 14 months Nominated by Nominating Committee The Rev.
