Week 3 Tissues and Skin

TODAY This week we are starting tissues - the level of organization between cells and organs. We are also looking at the integumentary system. The skin (integumentary system) is an unusual system and all four tissue types contribute to its structure - it has an outer layer of epithelial cells with connective tissues and muscle tissue underneath, as well as nervous tissue for sensing and responding to the environment. This is a lot of material, so study hard! DO NOT FALL BEHIND!!! OBJECTIVES THE FOLLOWING CAN BE FOUND IN EX 6A, AND 7 OF YOUR LAB MANUAL Identify the following specific tissues from the pictures and slides; know the location of each tissue: Epithelial simple squamous, simple cuboidal, simple columnar, stratified squamous, stratified cuboidal, stratified columnar, pseudostratified columnar, and transitional epithelium. Find the basement membrane. Identify cilia and goblet cells in appropriate tissues. Connective Tissues: adipose, areolar, reticular, regular dense, irregular dense, hyaline cartilage, elastic cartilage, fibrocartilage, bone, blood, mesenchyme from a slide. Identify cells and matrix (ground substance and fibers). Know the names of the specific cells for each tissue type (e.g. chondrocyte, mesenchymal cell, lymphocyte, etc.) and what the matrix contains (e.g. collagen fibers, elastic fibers, etc.) Muscle Tissues:skeletal, smooth, cardiac Be able to label fibers, striations, nuclei, and intercalated discs where appropriate on a slide or picture. Nervous Tissue: nervous Be able to label the cell bodies, the neuron processes.

List the functions of the integumentary system. Identify the following structures on the skin model, slide or picture: epidermis, dermis (papillary and reticular layers), hypodermis, hair follicles, hair shaft, sebaceous glands, sweat glands, arrector pili muscles. Name the cells found in the epidermis (keratinocytes, melanocytes, Langerhans cells, Merkel cells) and indicate the function of each. Identify nails as part of the integumentary system and identify the following features: root, mail matrix, nail fold, cuticle, body of nail, free edge, lunula, and nail bed. Identify the following features of a hair: Shaft, root, follicle, papilla On your fingerprint, identify whorls, loops, and arches. What structure makes these patterns?

REVIEW SHEETS Ex 6: Complete entire review sheet Ex 7: Complete entire review sheet Exam I is nearing. STUDY! These next few weeks will be intensive with learning all the structures. The more you can prepare, the better. Next week we start bones. It is recommended

that you go through the manual with the objective sheet and highlight all the structures that you will need to know. You may also want to bring a camera to take pictures. Videos of the teacher are not allowed, but you can make videos starring your labmate! They make great study tools. =)
