Selection guide

Orifice plates

Flow measurement requires skilful and experienced engineering during w Selection of measuring equipment w Installation and maintenance w Interpretation and application of results. Actual results from flow measurement are used for many significant reasons covering areas such as w Flow control requirements w Flow rates for process, fiscal or allocation purposes w Flow totals for accounting and material balances etc. For over thirty years Solartron ISA has designed and manufactured a wide range of single phase primary differential pressure flow devices to most of the major oil & gas companies around the world. As volume flow measurement continues to be utilised DP measurement remains the most widely used method of primary flow measurement. The addition of densitometry in the form of Solartrons tube or insertion type meters has contributed to the accurate measurement of mass flow. The very wide selection of primary DP devices, often termed head meters, has given industry the ability to measure flow very accurately within a closed pipeline. Whether measuring fluids in the form of liquids or gases there is a wide choice of primary DP flow devices available from Solartron ISA. All Solartron ISA flow devices are subject to and comply with the European Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) and carry the CE mark

Venturi tubes and venturi nozzles

Classical Venturi Tubes Classical Venturi Tubes are used on applications where a low permanent pressure loss is required, this being 5-20% of the measured differential. Venturi tubes can be used on clean and dirty fluids in line sizes from 25mm to 1,800mm. Supplied with or without flanges for butt welding into on site pipework. Venturi tubes are particularly effective on steam and wet gas applications. Exact length depends upon the ratio of throat to line diameter. Typically 5 pipe diameters. Standards Tappings Materials ISO 5167/BS 1042 12" NPT female (one set) others on request. Carbon Steel, Low Temperature Carbon Steel, Chrome Moly Steels, Stainless Steel, Duplex, Super Duplex, 6 Mo, Aluminium, Monel, Hastelloy, Incolloy 825.

Figure 1 For line sizes up to 200mm, machined from solid barstock or forgings.

Figure 2 For line sizes 250mm and above, fabricated with rolled cones and machined throat.

Modern machining techniques allow solid machined units up to 400mm to be cost effective. Venturi nozzles Venturi Nozzles combine the best features of venturi tubes and flow nozzles in a single unit, i.e. relatively low permanent pressure loss (10-20% of differential) and suitable for flow measurement of high velocity corrosive and abrasive fluids. Each type can be supplied with or without flanges for fitting between flanges or butt welding into on-site pipework. Standards Tappings Materials ISO 5167/BS 1042 12" NPT female (one set) others on request. Carbon Steel, Chrome Moly Steels, Stainless Steel, Duplex, Super Duplex, 6 Mo, Titanium, Bronze. Other materials may be available on request.

Flow nozzles and dall tubes

Flow nozzles Solartron ISA 1932 Flow Nozzles are reasonably accurate devices for measuring the flow of high velocity, non-viscous fluids, e.g. steam. They are particularly suitable for erosive fluids where the sharp edge of an orifice plate could quickly deteriorate.

Size Design Standard Tappings Materials

50mm to 1000mm ISO 5167/BS 1042 12" female NPT (one set) others on request. Carbon Steel, Chrome Moly Steels, Stainless Steel, Duplex, Super Duplex, 6 Mo, Aluminium. Other materials may be available on request. Figure 1 Insert type - for mounting inside the bolt circle of existing flanges. Tappings may be provided on pipework or with nozzle. Figure 2 Butt weld type - for butt welding into on-site pipework. Figure 3 In-line flanged type - for mounting between customer flanges.

Low loss Dall tubes Dall Tubes are less accurate than venturi tubes but give the lowest permanent pressure loss of all primary flow elements. Due to the configuration of the throat and tapping areas they are ideal for clean fluids and are not suited for fluids with suspended solids.

Size Standard Tappings Materials

100mm to 1200mm 12 NPT female (one set) others on request. Carbon Steel, Chrome Moly Steels, Stainless Steels, including Duplex, Super Duplex, 6 Mo. Other materials may be available on request. Figure 1 In line flanged type - overall length approximately 2 pipe diameters depending on the ratio of throat to line diameter. Permanent pressure loss 212 to 10% of differential. Figure 2 Short form insert - manufactured to fit inside the bolt circle of existing flanges. Overall length is only approximately 0.3 pipe diameters depending on the ratio of throat to line diameter. Permanent pressure loss is similar to a venturi (10 to 20% of the differential) but the Dall unit is more cost effective.

Meter runs and Proflo

Meter runs Meter Runs are supplied as a complete unit to ensure the necessary straight pipe lengths are available for the highest possible accuracy. They can be supplied with temperature pockets if required. The corner tapped meter run (Figure 1) gives the best accuracy and should be used on line sizes below 50mm. Flange taps (Figure 2) are best suited for Dirty Fluid applications where it may be necessary to Rod Out the tappings and keep clear of residue left by the metered fluid. For highest accuracy the orifice bore is calculated using the actual measured pipe bore after assembly. Standard Lengths Standard Tappings Materials 24 x Pipe Diameter (18D upstream; 6D downstream), other lengths on request. 12" NPT female (one per flange) others on request. Flanges Carbon Steel, Low Temperature Carbon Steel, Chrome Moly Steels, Stainless Steel, Duplex, Super Duplex, 6 Mo, Aluminium, Monel, Hastelloy, Incolloy 825. Tube Carbon Steel, Low Temperature Carbon Steel, Chrome Moly Steels, Stainless Steel, Duplex, Super Duplex, 6 Mo, Aluminium, Monel, Hastelloy, Incolloy 825. Other materials may be available on request. Bolts, nuts and gaskets to suit individual applications.

ISA Proflo The Proflo unit is used to ensure changing the orifice plate is quicker and more convenient during maintenance, after the line is depressurised, but without the inconvenience of forcing apart the flanges as on a standard orifice assembly. The unit can be supplied with flange or butt weld connections or a combination of both. For improved accuracy it is usual to supply the element mounted in a meter run as shown above. Orifice Plates can be independently calibrated for allocation or fiscal applications if required. Standards Size Standard Tappings Materials ISO 5167/BS 1042 50mm and above. Winding mechanism is supplied in sizes 200mm and over for easier removal of plate. 12" NPT female (one set) others on request. Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel, Duplex, Super Duplex, 6 Mo.

Restriction orifice plates

Restriction Orifice Plates can be used in either of the following applications:w To produce a specified reduction in line pressure w To use the restriction to create critical flow, which gives a controlled flow rate regardless of changes in down stream conditions Multi-hole plates or multistage designs (dump systems) are often required for high pressure drop applications and to control noise levels on site. Materials Calculations Manufacture All stainless steels including Duplex, Super Duplex and 6 Mo Monel, Hastelloy B & C, Incolloy 825, Titanium, Bronze. Other materials may be available on request. Calculations can be supplied for bore size, thickness, noise for single plate as well as multi hole or multi stage Plates are available to suit line sizes up to 1,200 mm, in a range of thicknesses to suit the pressure drop. Multistage/Dump systems can be supplied in most materials on request

Averaging pitot tube

General Principle Self averaging pitot tubes use multiple sensing ports to continually average the flow profile and generate a differential pressure that represents the mean flow rate. They are comparatively easy to install through typically a single 25mm (1") pipe tapping, or flanged nipple. The generated DP is low and the permanent pressure loss is very low.

Low Flow Models Accuracy 2%, repeatability 0.25% Recommended for use when the differential pressure is below: 40WG (1016mm WC) *for liquid flows 20WG (508mm WC) *for gas flows 40WG (1016mm WC) *for steam flows

High Flow Models Accuracy 2%, repeatability 0.05% Recommended for use when the differential pressure is above: 20WG (508mm WC) *for liquid flows 10WG (254mm WC) *for gas flows 20WG (508mm WC) *for steam flows

KB Series High accuracy models Accuracy 1% Repeatability 0.1%

Averaging pitot tubes can be supplied flanged, with compression fittings, with patented safelock mechanism or as retractable assemblies for removal of probe under line pressure.

Pipe size Standards

DN15 to DN2500 The principle of operation is based on the Square Root relationship and the position of the impact ports is based on one log-linear data described in BS 1042. There is no International standard covering averaging pitot tubes, therefore coefficients for the instruments have been obtained from flow calibration in independent flow laboratories and in research and development tests. Stainless Steel, Duplex, Monel, Hastelloy, Bronze. Other materials may be available on request. NOTE: KB Series is available in 316L stainless steel only

Materials

Benefits The averaging of the velocity profile allows the use of the probe in applications where the length of the upstream straight pipe is far from ideal. Typical requirements are 7 from single right-angled bend and 9 from 2 bends in plane. Lower permanent pressure loss The non-restrictive design of the probe produces a greatly reduced permanent pressure loss downstream. Typically only 10% of the generated differential pressure. Lower cost of installation Can be used for bi-directional flow applications.
