Volume 12, Number 3

Our Friend and Brother James R. (Bob) Lane I met Bob Lane in 1984. I had come to work with the 12th and Drexel congregation in Oklahoma City. Bobs wife, Omega, was a long time member of that congregation. Bob would bring her to Bible class, and then go home. He would return in time for worship to end, and be waiting for her at the front door. He loved Meg (Omega). I spoke to him at the door a time or two, but didnt get much out of him. He seemed a bit bristly and reserved. I have met many non-attending husbands through the years. Some have been pretty tough, but most have been nice men. My first impressions of Bob proved to be correct, but there was much more. I soon learned that he was a very tender-hearted man who had a real soft spot for the underprivileged. He and I became much better acquainted as he began to bring cases of food to the church building for us to give to people in need. Bob began to stop by the office just to visit and to see if there were any needs among the people. In 1991 the Drexel building was burned. It struck Bob that anyone could do such a thing, and a door was opened. In the winter of 1992 Bob was baptized into Christ. In 1994, his beloved Meg died. Bob continued to be a part of the Drexel congregation until 2010. The passing years took their toll on Bobs aging body, and he became more dependent on friends, including me. We became even closer. Bob decided that he would like to attend church services with us. He did for several weeks when he was able. He sat on the back row in the right section. As his health declined, Bob asked me to be the executor of his estate. I hesitated, but agreed. Other than some money to be given to his nephew and a couple of friends, the Southern Ridge Church of Christ became the recipient of his remaining estate. It was a kind gesture that was a little difficult for some to grasp at first. He told me that he knew we would do the right thing with it. The word, estate, may sound somewhat grand. The only thing grand (Continued on page 4)

The Sentinel January 15, 2012 (Continued from page 1) about it was the desire in his big heart. Bob was just a working guy who saved a little, but mostly lived on his Social Security. When he died, he had a few thousand dollars in the bank and his house. His house was in a very modest and culturally changing neighborhood. Even with the sale of the house his whole estate was only about $60,000 dollars. The church received about $50,000. It is a nice sum of money from a man who lived pretty simply in his life. As it is not a huge sum of money in the scheme of things, it is not a change of fortune for the church or our works. His family asked that we not just put the money in the bank to pay bills or the such, but to use it for something extra and beneficial. Our new song books are a portion of that desire being realized. I know the elders are, and I believe the rest of us are appreciative of this gift and want to see that it benefits the work here in a good way. I know that many of us did not get to know Bob to any degree. So, I have written this to help you know something about him. His time with us was short, but he was thankful for the blessing of your warmth and friendliness to him. RD
