English summer reading for seniors

Seniors have the opportunity of selecting a book of their choice for their English requirement. A list of recommended fiction and non-fiction options are listed below; however, seniors have the freedom to select any book they have not read before or that is not on the summer reading list for another 12th grade course. Regardless of their choice of book, students will need to be prepared to respond to the questions provided below when they return to school in the fall. Non-fiction suggestions: 1. The Knowledge of the Holy A. W. Tozer 2. The Real Face of Atheism Ravi Zacharias 3. The Problem of Pain C. S. Lewis 4. Desiring God John Piper 5. Creed or Chaos Dorothy L. Sayers For non-fiction books (including biographies), consider the following: How would you summarize the major arguments of the text? What is the author suggesting, and how does he/she develop those ideas? Does the text promote the reader's agreement or disagreement? What makes you think so? Is the book based upon or does it refer to other texts? Fiction suggestions: 1. Mansfield Park Jane Austen 2. The Count of Monte Cristo Alexander Dumas 3. Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant Anne Tyler 4. Dracula Bram Stoker 5. The Once and Future King T. H. White For fiction books, consider the following: Identify a moral choice that a character must make (this happens in every novel, for it reflects the nature of conflict) To which character did you most strongly relate, and why? Would you say the text is political, economic, or societal? In what ways and to what end? Comment on setting and the ways in which it contributes as a whole to the events of the novel. For additional suggestions, please see Mr. Davis or Mrs. Fields
