III SEM. B.E. (MECHATRONICS ENGG.) DEGREE END SEMESTER EXAMINATIONS DEC./JAN. 09-10 SUBJECT: FLUID MECHANICS AND MACHINES (MME-243) REVISED CREDIT SYSTEM (02 / 01 / 2010) Time: 3 Hours. MAX.MARKS: 50 Instructions to Candidates: Answer ANY FIVE FULL questions. Missing data, if any, may be suitably assumed. . 1A) Explain briefly the following : (1) Surface Tension (2) Bulk modulus. (3) capillarity. (03)

1B) A plate having an area of 0.6m2 is sliding down the inclined plane at 300 to the horizontal with a velocity of 0.36m/sec.There is a cushion of fluid 1.8mm thick between the plane and the plate. Find the viscosity of the fluid if the weight of the plate is 280N. (03) 1C) A U tube differential manometer is connected in two pipes M and N. If pipe M liquid of specific gravity 1.5 flows while in pipe N liquid of specific gravity 0.9 flows. The pressure in both M and N are 10 N/cm2 .and 18 N/cm2. respectively. The centre of the pipe M is 3m above the centre of the pipe N.The mercury level in the manometer limb connected to the pipe M is 5m below the centre line of the pipe M and mercury level in the other limb is (2+h) metre below the centre line of the pipe N. Find h the difference level in the manometer. (04) 2A) Derive an expression for the metacentric height of a floating body analytically. (05) 2B) A 1m wide and 1.5m deep rectangular plane surface lies in water in such a way that its plane makes an angle of 300 with the free water surface. Determine the total pressure force and position of centre of pressure when the upper edge is 0.75m below the free water surface. (03) 2C) Find the density of a metallic body which floats at the interface of mercury of specific gravity 13.6 and water such that 35 percent of its volume is submerged in mercury 65 percent in water. 3C) Water is flowing through a pipe having diameter 300mm and 200mm at the bottom and upper end respectively. The intensity of pressure at the bottom end is 24.525 N/cm2 and the pressure at the upper end is 9.81 N/cm2 .Determine the difference in datum head if the rate of flow through pipe is 40 lit/sec. (03) 4A) Derive Darcy-Weisbach equation for computing head loss due to friction in pipe. (04) 4B) The resisting force R of a supersonic plane during flight can be considered as dependent upon the length of the aircraft L ,velocity V, air viscosity , air density p, and bulkmodulus of air K. Express the functional relationship between these variables and the resisting force. 4C) Water flows at the rate of 0.015m /sec.through a 100mm diameter orifice used in a 200mm diameter pipe. What is the difference in pressure head between the upstream sections and the vena contracta section.Take Cc=0.60. and Cv=1.0 (02) 5A) A 7.5 cm diameter jet having a velocity of 30 m/sec.strikes a flat plate, the normal of which is inclined at 450 to the axis of the jet.Find the normal pressure on the plate.(1) When the plate is stationary, and (2) when the plate is moving with a velocity of 15 m/sec.and away from the jet. Also determine the power and the efficiency of the jet when the plate is moving. (05) 5B) With a neat sketch explain the governing mechanism of a Pelton wheel. (05) 6A) Define a centrifugal pump. Explain the working 0f a single stage centrifugal pump with sketches. (05) 6B) An oil of viscosity 0.1Ns/m2 and relative density 0.9 flowing through a circular pipe of diameter 50mm and of length 300m. The rate of flow of fluid through the pipe is 3.5 lit/sec. Find the pressure drop in a length of 300m and also the shear stress at the pipe wall. (05)
