what is wordwall?

The ultimate classroom tool. WordWall makes your lessons more participatory. Say goodbye to static information-giving slides and create dynamic exercises that encourage active learning. In seconds, you can create activities using the WordWall wizards - just type in the information and the formatting is taken care of. You can also draw on millions of online resources using our image and text banks. Sharing your own creations can be done with one-click, via the in-built activity bank. The WordWall sketch tools make it easy to scribble class notes and annotate over web pages or office documents. Powerful and simple-to-use, WordWall will work with any interactive whiteboard, wireless slate or even just a data projector. More than just a voting system. Used in conjunction with the WordPad response system, every student can get involved. They can interact with the board using gamepad controls; categorizing keywords, rearranging comprehension exercises, matching-up definitions or creating opinion scales. Or have them contribute ideas using phonestyle texting - so everyone gets their opinion across. The WordPads also make it easier to assess pupil progress. They include support for self-paced multiple choice tests - where students can independently progress through questions via their handset screen. WordWall helps you make interactive lessons. Where learning is fun and every students voice is heard.

Your guide. We hope this booklet will provide a useful introduction to the core features of WordWall. Where it refers to tools explained elsewhere in the guide, this will be indicated in brackets. For brevity, we havent referred to items labelled on page 8, which provides an overview of the WordWall interface. Help tab. If you need more assistance, the best place to look is within the program itself. The help tab, located in the bottom right of the interface, offers comprehensive support on all the WordWall tools and functions. Its contextual so if you select a tool and then go to the help tab, it will explain its functions. If you pin it out (top-right), it can provide a constant guide.

Resources at your fingertips. Fed up of flicking back and forth between your web browser to paste in pictures? Ever get half way through creating an activity and need a bit more information? The purpose of the text and image banks is to save you time. You can make them appear (and hide) by clicking on the info icon (01). They can also be pinned permanently out (02) for continual use. To search, simply type your term in the text box. Alternatively click on a tile and the text will automatically appear. Then click on the search button (03).

The image bank. This searches through nearly two billion online images - all you have to do is drag the ones you want onto your wall or a tile. You can also access images on the clipboard or load in images stored on your computer (04). The window drawer can quickly fill up, so you may also want to clear items (05). When picking a file to add to your wall, if you want to have it displayed quite large, as in the example opposite, you should check the file resolution (06). In addition, when you drag the file into a receiving tile, you can choose whether the image is stretched or cropped (07). The text bank. Providing access to millions of data items, this encyclopedic resource drags and drops just like the image bank. Although it has short 50-200 word abstracts (08) that are suitable for information slides, its real benefit is for finding related keywords. You can find these in the folders (09) or by loading up an associated article (10). For example, to create a metals wall, you could search for iron, open the metallic elements folder and drag it into the wall. There are also other data items related to each article, such as translations (11), dates and scientific properties.

Flexible and a time-saver. One of WordWalls unique features is the ability to easily move information between different activity types. So for example, you could start your lesson with a text grid (M) and then recreate it as a labelling activity in the match-up wizard using the same data (O). You could then finish the lesson by rating keywords in the opinion wizard (N). It means that during a lesson, if you find that an activity isnt working with a class, you can quickly try something else. It also gives you more options with resources found in the activity bank. Converting an existing wordwall is easy: 1 Click on the WordWall icon in the top left of the screen. Select modify and then convert. 2 Select the wizard type you wish to create (not all will be available). 3 Alter the text as required. Via the right-click menu you can remove blank entries or switch columns. Then generate the activity by clicking create.

Share and improve. WordWall includes thousands of resources to help you get more from your interactive whiteboard or data projector. Contributed by teachers, nearly a hundred are being added each week. Some of these are entirely new resources, but others are improvements on existing files - through a process of peer review, the resources dont just increase in quantity, they improve in quality. The resources can be accessed through the activity bank (02). Type your search term into the text box (03). This will keyword-match with words within the file, not just the file title - so, for example, it may be more useful to search for igneous rather than rock if you want a file explaining rock types. Press enter and then double-click on the thumbnails to open the files. Contribute. You can add your own activity bank with just one click. When you save your file, just select allow sharing from the popup window. Within seconds, the file will be added to the database and will be available for other teachers to use.

5 When completed, you can use class record and analysis to show the results. These are available in the handsets toolbar menu.

Dynamic and topical. Another source of online content are the webwizards. These are accessible through at the bottom of the wizards tab (01). They draw from online data repositories to create wordwalls, based on your specification. So for example, you can get the days news in a variety of different formats suitable for an interactive whiteboard. Theres a global photos database which produces image wordwalls, 24hr webcam snapshots and dictionary-generated word grids . You can also access encyclopedic wizards such as the CIA factbook, which allows you to compile resources based on country data, maps and flags. The webwizard list is updated online every time the program starts, so new wizards appear regularly.

Place a tick next to the correct answer(s). 3 Click on next question to add another page, or select ok to create the exercise (F). 4 To start the voting, click on the play icon and select private poll from the game choices. 5 Students enter a tile number (01) to vote. As they vote, their chip moves across the screen (02).

More than voting. With WordWall there are eleven games that can be used in combination with the different wizards. So its not just about multiple-choice quizzes. To get you started, were going to explore how students can make choices on a simple text wall. First, you need to create a simple text wall (B), register the WordPads and select the following games from the start game menu (p11).

D private poll

E joypad G vote on each question

6 The correct answer can be revealed using the mark tool (F). How students have voted can be shown via the change display icon. You can move through the pages by using the page controls. 7 Click the graph icon in the handsets menu, to view result charts by student, question or class. A personal chart is also displayed on the handset (H). You can copy the results to the clipboard or export as a spreadsheet, via the edit menu.

1 Students can vote by pressing the number of the tile on their handset followed by the send key (A). 2 By pressing the change display icon, the teacher can reveal how many students have voted for each tile. By pressing it again they can reveal who voted for each tile. 3 View results by clicking on the class record icon.

1 Students move their chip around the tiles by using the joypad keys (A). They enter from the left. 2 The teacher can reveal player names (p14) by hovering over the chips with their pointer. Chips appear in the order in which they entered the tile. 3 The teacher can stop the student chips moving around by pressing the pause button.

I self-paced testing H view the results

Select self-paced mode in start game (B) and students can answer independently via their handset screen. Use the up/ down keys to scroll through the question, press send to submit the answer. The right joypad key moves to the next question (A).

texting and opinion scales

Every student has a voice. Using the WordPads its easy for students to contribute ideas even if they dont have the confidence to speak-out in class. Teachers can select these ideas from the text bank and then drag them into an empty grid wordwall for discussion. The ideas remain anonymous unless the teacher decides to reveal the contributors name. In text bank mode, students can contribute multiple ideas. In tile mode, ideas are submitted into a tile, but students can edit their tile after submission. These options can be selected via the settings menu. By converting the empty grid into the opinion wizard (p6) students can rate selected ideas as a class.

13

14

tracking and analyzing results

Enter names. Names are optional, but if you want to track student performance, theyre pretty essential. Using the edit names tool (02), students can enter their forename, surname and student code. Or you can paste in these details via the edit menu. Because students are only identified to the class by their chip ID, they can remain anonymous. To match-up records between classes, open the class record and allow students to login using the pick names from list function (03).

K text bank

Assessing pupil progress. As you complete activities with the WordPads, the results are entered automatically into the class record as a new column (M). If you open a class record before each lesson, you can track results over the school year. You can also use the class record to track attendance and collect personal details, rather than using paper forms (N). To access a more detailed analysis of each activity (O), simply click on the records column header and select analysis (01) from the column drop-down menu. Via the edit menu, you can also export this data to a spreadsheet or to your schools student database.

N collect data
Add data directly into the record. Each data field adds a column into the class record and a new page on the handset screen.
