About VMware Infrastructure


VMwareInfrastructureisasuiteofapplicationsthatusesvirtualizationto: Runmultipleoperatingsystemsonasinglephysicalmachinesimultaneously. Reclaimidleresourcesandbalanceworkloadsacrossmultiplephysicalmachines. Workaroundhardwarefailuresandscheduledmaintenance.

VMware Infrastructure Components


FamiliaritywiththecomponentsthatmakeupaVMwareInfrastructureenvironment helpsyouunderstandthesetupprocessand,ultimately,theprocessofrunningvirtual machinesusingVMwareVirtualCenter.VMwareInfrastructureincludesthefollowing components: TheVMwareInfrastructureClientTheVIClientistheinterfacetothe VirtualCenterServerandhosts.Italsoprovidesconsoleaccesstovirtualmachines. TheVMwareVirtualCenterServerTheVirtualCenterServerunifiesresources fromindividualhostssothatthoseresourcescanbesharedamongvirtual machinesintheentiredatacenter.Itaccomplishesthisbymanagingthe assignmentofvirtualmachinestothehostsandtheassignmentofresourcestothe virtualmachineswithinagivenhostbasedonthepoliciessetbythesystem administrator. TheVirtualCenterServerallowstheuseofadvancedVMwareInfrastructure featuressuchasVMwareDistributedResourceScheduler(DRS),VMwareHigh Availability(HA),andVMwareVMotion. DatacenterAdatacenterisastructureunderwhichyouaddhostsandtheir associatedvirtualmachinestotheVirtualCenterinventory. HostAhostisacomputerthatusestheESX Server 3ivirtualizationsoftwarerun virtualmachines.HostsprovideCPUandmemoryresources,accesstostorage, andnetworkconnectivityforvirtualmachinesthatresideonthem.Youmusthave ahostbeforefollowingthestepsinthismanual. PressEntertocontinuewiththeInstallation. ThetextinstallerstepsyouthrougheachprocessoftheESXServerinstallation. Whentheinstallercompletestheoperation,theInstallationCompletescreen displays.

RemovetheCDandrebootthehost.

Setting Up ESX Server 3i


SettingupESX Server 3iinvolvesconfiguringtheAdministrative(root)passwordfor theESX Server 3ihostandconfiguringthedefaultnetworkingbehavior.Beforeyou begin,makesureyouhavethefollowing: AnESX Server 3isystemthatisconnectedtoamonitorandkeyboardandpowered on. AnetworkwithaDHCPserver(optional).

Atleastoneothercomputertoactasamanagementstation.Thiscomputermust berunningWindows,havenetworkaccesstotheESX Server 3i,andhaveInternet access. TheVMwareInfrastructureManagementInstallerCDROM. NOTEIntheeventthatasystemfailureoccurs,youcanrestoretheESX Server 3i software.RefertotheSetupGuideforyourESX Server 3iproductforinstructionson recoveringESX Server 3i.Ifyoudonothaveacopyofthismanual,youcanobtainone byvisitinghttp://www.vmware.com/support/pubs. AfterESX Server 3iisinstalledandrebootedforthefirsttime,thesystemnetworkand storagedevicesareconfiguredwithdefaults.Afterthehostcompletesthebootup phase,thedirectconsoleappearsontheattachedmonitor.

Usingakeyboardattachedtothehost,pressF2toexaminethedefaultconfiguration. Asthesystemadministrator,youmaywanttomakechangestothedefault configuration,suchascreatingtheadministratorpasswordorsettingthestaticIP address.VMwarerecommendsthatyouconfigureyouradministrativeaccesssettings andservernetworkforthepurposeoftheVMwareInfrastructureevaluation.

Configuring the Administrative Password


TheadministrativeusernamefortheESX Server 3ihostisroot.Bydefault,the administrativepasswordisnull,meaningthereisnoadministrativepassword. To create an administrative password 1 2 3 Fromthedirectconsole,pressF2. SelectConfigureRootPassword. Whenpromptedfortheoldpassword,pressEnter.

Therootpasswordiscreated.

Configuring the Management Network


ThedefaultbehaviorfornetworkingisforDHCP(DynamicHostConfiguration Protocol)toconfiguretheIPaddress.Youcanchoosefromthefollowingoptionsfor acceptingormakingchangestothedefaultnetworksettings: AccepttheDHCPconfiguredIPsettingsandproceedtousetheVIClientto connecttotheESX Server 3ihost. OverridetheDHCPconfiguredIPaddressbyconfiguringastaticIPaddressusing thedirectconsole.

WritedowntheIPaddressfortheESX Server 3ihost.YouwillneedtheIPaddress whenyouconnecttothehostusingtheVIClient. Afteryoucompleteinitialsetupofyourhostmachine,youcaninstallthesoftware neededtomanageESX Server 3i.Foryourfirstevaluationexperience,youwillinstall theVIClienttomanageasinglehost. UsetheVMwareInfrastructureManagementInstallerCDROMtoinstalltheVIClient onadesktoporlaptopcomputerthatistobeusedasamanagementstation.Ifyoudid notpurchasetheVMwareInfrastructureManagementsoftware,usetheVIClient packagedownloadedontoyourhostduringtheESX Server 3iinstallationoran evaluationcopydownloadedfromtheVMwareDownloadCenter. TheVIClientmustbeinstalledonaWindowsmachinethathasnetworkaccesstothe ESX Server 3ihost.ThemanagementstationmustalsohaveInternetaccess.

Before You Begin


Beforeyoubegin,besureyoursystemmeetstheseVIClientrequirements.

Hardware Requirements
TheVIClienthardwaremustmeetthefollowingrequirements: Processor266MHzorhigherIntelorAMDx86processor(500MHz recommended). Memory256MBRAMminimum,512MBrecommended. DiskStorage150MBfreediskspacerequiredforbasicinstallation.Youmust have55MBfreeonthedestinationdriveforinstallationoftheprogram,andyou musthave100MBfreeonthedrivecontainingyour%temp% directory. NetworkingGigabitEthernetrecommended.

Software Requirements
TheVI Clientisdesignedfor32bitversionsoftheWindowsoperatingsystems. TheVI ClientrequirestheMicrosoft.NET2.0Framework.Ifyoursystemdoesnthave itinstalled,theVI Clientinstallerautomaticallyinstallsit.

Installing the VI Client


ThissectiondescribeshowtoinstalltheVIClientbyusingtheVMwareInfrastructure ManagementInstallerCDROM. To install a VI Client on Windows 1 AsAdministratorontheWindowssystem,inserttheinstallationCDROM.When theVMwareInfrastructureManagementInstallerscreenisdisplayed,clickNext.

Adding Your First Virtual Machine


Afteryouconnecttoyourhostmachine,youcanaddavirtualmachinetothehost. Thereareseveralwaystoaddvirtualmachinestohosts.Youcanbuildanewvirtual machineorimportavirtualappliance(aprebuiltvirtualmachine)fromtheVMware Website.TheVIClientGettingStartedtab,showninFigure 2,containsaWhatisa Host?sectionthatprovidesstepstoguideyouthroughbothoptions.Ifthisisyourfirst virtualmachine,VMwarerecommendsyouimportavirtualmachinethathasan operatingsystemalreadyinstalledandisreadytouse.

Managing Multiple ESX Server 3i Hosts in Your Datacenter


NowthatyouveexploredavirtualmachineontheESX Server 3ihost,youcandeploy aVirtualCenterServertomanagemultiplehostsatthesametime.Managingmultiple hoststhroughaVirtualCenterServerallowsyoutoexperimentwithadvanced managementoptions,suchasresourcesharing,andalltheotheroptionsavailable withintheVMwareInfrastructureenvironment. TheVMwareInfrastructureManagementInstallerCDROMisincludedintheVMware packagingaccompanyingyourphysicalserver.UsetheCDROMtoinstalla VirtualCenterServeronthecomputerthatwillbeusedasamanagementstation. Forproductionuse,VMwarerecommendsthattheVirtualCenterServerbeinstalledon adedicatedserversystem.However,forthepurposeofthisexercise,itcanbeinstalled onadesktoporlaptopandmanagedremotelythroughtheVIClient.VirtualCenter ServermustbeinstalledonaWindowsmachinethathasnetworkaccesstothe ESX Server 3ihost.

Before You Begin


TheVirtualCenterServerrequiresadatabase.VirtualCenterServerusesMicrosoftSQL Server2005Expressasademonstrationdatabase.(SEEUPDATE)Beforeyoubegin,make sureyoursystemmeetsthehardwareandsoftwarerequirements.

Hardware Requirements
TheVirtualCenterServerhardwaremustmeetthefollowingrequirements: Processor2.0GHzorhigherIntelorAMDx86processor.Processorrequirements canbelargerifyourdatabaseisrunonthesamehardware. Memory2GBRAMminimum.RAMrequirementscanbelargerifyourdatabase isrunonthesamehardware. Diskstorage560MBminimum,2GBrecommended.Youmusthave245MBfree onthedestinationdriveforinstallationoftheprogram,andyoumusthave315MB freeonthedrivecontainingyour%temp%directory. MicrosoftSQLServer2005ExpressdiskrequirementsThedemonstration databaserequiresupto2GBfreediskspacetodecompresstheinstallationarchive. However,approximately1.5GBofthesefilesaredeletedaftertheinstallationis complete. NetworkingGigabitEthernetrecommended.

Installing the VirtualCenter Server

Configurethevirtualmachinesmemorysizebyselectingthenumberof megabytes. Theminimum,recommended,maximumforbestperformance,andmaximum sizesarebasedontheguestoperatingsystem.Regardlessoftheguestoperating system,theminimummemorysizeis4MB.

ClickNext. Choosethenetworkstoconnecttoandtheiroptionsbyselectinghowmany networkadapters(NICs)youwanttoconnectto,thenamesofthenetworks,and whetheryouwanttoconnecttothematpoweron. Thenetworkpulldownmenuliststheportgroupsthatareconfiguredforvirtual machineuseonthehost.Ifnovirtualmachineportgroupsareconfigured,a warningdialogboxappears,andyouarenotallowedtoconfigureanyvirtual networkcards.

ClickNext. Specifythesizeofthevirtualdisk. Enterthedisksizeinmegabytes(MB)orgigabytes(GB).Thedefaultis4GB.The virtualdiskmustbelargeenoughtoholdtheguestoperatingsystemandallthe softwarethatyouintendtoinstallwithroomfordataandgrowth.
