PRESIDENT'S REPORT
The 2011 year for Brisbane Hockey Association Inc. (BHA) saw a number of improvements continued. Notably, the replacement of the artificial surface at Burringbar through a grant from the Queensland Government and the on-going enhancement and operation of Burringbar Park through the Brisbane Hockey Management Group. The continued improvement and maintenance of Burringbar as a hockey facility was made possible principally through the appointment of a dedicated facility supervisor and support staff. Continuing cooperation with BWHA was a key factor in successful management of Burringbar. In addition the television coverage of BHL1 games continued through 31 Digital. While there was some growth in junior numbers in 2011 much more is required to continue to grow our junior numbers. Umpiring also saw progress with the umpiring sub-committee being active in umpire management and development. The work of Allen Schasser and committee members as a foundation for further development in 2012 is appreciated. I look forward to further development of umpires, both senior and junior, across the 2012 season. Looking back on 2011 there are many highlights to note including:
NEWSPAPERS
The 2011 season also saw the continuation of the excellent work by Lee Oliver in having Brisbane hockey coverage in the local press. Once again, our strong appreciation goes to Lee for his good work, vision and commitment in achieving media coverage of Brisbane hockey. The weekly match reports and photos from BHL 1 games on the BHA website were popular once again with a wide audience, as were the regular articles including colour photographs on hockey in Brisbane that Lee gets placed in local Quest Community Newspapers where clubs are based. The continuing coverage is highly valued. Lee, thank you once again for your continuing efforts and those of your reporters to deliver valuable media coverage for Brisbane hockey. Also, thank you to club coaches and officials for supporting Lee with information and comments on your games. It is pleasing to note that Lee Oliver was acknowledged for his media work for BHA and Hockey Queensland as the Volunteer of the Year for Hockey Queensland at the 2010 annual awards presentation well done Lee on an honourable recognition well and truly deserved.
REPRESENTATIVE HOCKEY
In 2011 we continued our strong support and participation in State championships achieving commendable results from Under 13 through to Masters as outlined below: U13 Second (3 teams) U15 Second (3 teams) U18 First (3 teams) Premier League Second and eighth (relegation to State Open 2012) State Open Fifth Over 40 Third Over 45 Fifth Over 50 Joint Winners Over 55 Second It was disappointing for the Premier League 2 team to finish eighth and be relegated at Premier League this year. Putting our disappointment aside this now requires us to rise to the challenge and opportunity to develop a strong team for the Open Championship to win back a place in Premier League for 2013. While the clash with the national Under 18 championships denied us a number of players who could have made a difference we need to take the opportunity to develop a squad that can be the basis of future Premier League teams and continue to provide the opportunity to showcase many of our younger talented players. At the time of writing, Hockey Queensland is reviewing the representative structure around Premier league and State Open including a proposal to have Premier League and State Open in May and for there to be a zone or region based cham pionship above Premier League in June. This proposal is currently with all Queensland associations for consultation and discussion at the Members Forum in late November. On behalf of BHA and our representative players, thank you to all coaches and managers for your efforts in the organisation and support of our representative teams. The Premier League and State Open Championships were in Brisbane in 2011 and required the support of clubs and volunteers to provide an enjoyable tournament that met the needs of the competition as well as the off-field needs of players, officials and spectators across the playing times. Thank you to all who supported the Association in hosting Premier league this year, in particular Bruce and Veronica Luck for organising the BBQ tent a big effort which was well done again this year.
BURRINGBAR PARK
The Burringbar Park Facility continues to be operated by the Brisbane Hockey Management Group Inc (BHMG) an association between BHA, BWHA and Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club which meets Brisbane City Council requirements and provides a partnership to manage and improve Burringbar. Negotiations with Brisbane City Council for a longer term lease for Burringbar were completed with a standard five year lease being issued. This includes a responsibility to maintain and improve the facility. At the time of last years report our priority was the replacement of the artificial surface even if it meant borrowing funds to do so. Fortunately, BHMG was successful in obtaining a grant from the Queensland Government to replace the artificial surface as well as a number of improvements, in particular, new player dugouts with a technical bench included. Consequently, the financial viability of Burringbar is much more assured. Particular note needs to be made of the initiative of Ian Harcla and John Davis who attended a Community Cabinet meeting to put the case for re-consideration of the BHMG grant application. Their representations were successful in convincing the Minsters present of the merits of the grant application with subsequent second round approval. I would like to express our appreciation to The Honourable Neil Roberts MP and The Honourable Phil Reeves for supporting the award of the grant. This has made a significant difference to both Burringbar and Brisbane Hockey. Both were present at the official opening of the new artificial surface on 26 March. The strategic and operational priorities are now to ensure the long term viability of Burringbar, in particular provision for the next replacement of the artificial surface. This requires continued commercial operation of Burringbar to also provide for further improvements to the centre. This is a major achievement following the demise of Shaw Sportz which left Burringbar with no funds, an artificial surface at the end of its life as well as many maintenance issues. The success of BHMG in addressing these issues is appreciated and would not have been possible without the continuing commitment and work of representatives on BHMG, in particular Paul Saunders and Kathleen Proctor who took on the roles of Treasurer and Secretary. From BHA a special thank you to Paul Saunders for the extensive work, including the valuable time away from his business to attend meetings and implement development and maintenance arrangements.
MEDIA COVERAGE
TV coverage of BHL1 and BWHA division 1 fixtures and finals by 31 Digital was continued in 2011. Conversion to digital by the former QCTV provided improved coverage and picture quality at 31 Digital. Thank you to all involved in organising and supporting the television coverage. Particular thanks to Col Morley, Tom Whetton and Alexander Swann, our volunteer commentators for their commitment to providing commentary across the season a big effort and we look forward to listening to your commentary and thoughts on the game in 2012.

growing relationship and look forward to working with you again in 2011.
Regional Coaching Director and for pushing junior recruitment initiatives. Sam Brooks for his support and enthusiasm in the role of Hockey Development Officer and for his work on the Annual Report. Importantly, to my fellow Board members thank you for you contributions across another busy season. The many hours of your time and your work to run the association for the benefit of Brisbane hockey players and supporters is appreciated. I look forward to continuing to work with you in 2011. Much has been achieved in 2011, however much more remains to be done to improve our Association and hockey in Brisbane especially junior recruitment. This puts a strong responsibility on us all to look up from our particular club or competition involvement and consider what can be done on a broader level to grow hockey in Brisbane especially junior recruitment. As we look to 2012 there are many ways that you can contribute to the success of your Association. There are opportunities for all to contribute, from roles on the Board, as a member of a sub-committee or supporting the junior recruitment initiative to help grow our Association. Looking forward to working with you again in 2012.

FIXTURES
This year's fixtures were hampered by interruptions from the weather right from the start as well as from the usual array of special events. In fact the very first round BHL1 and BHL2 fixtures on 19 th March saw several matches washed out and rescheduled to 16 th April. The MHL2 Preliminary Final was also washed out 30th August and was rescheduled to Friday 2nd September. While the Under 7 & 9 Carnival day at the State Hockey Centre on 27th August was rain affected, the Carnival still went ahead much to the delight of the players. The BHL and CHL Fixtures were drawn up by Russell Marsden, BHA Director of Competitions. June Grant, Hon Secretary BHA Junior Committee and Sam Brooks (BHA Hockey Development Officer) produced the Junior Draws with Alex Granlund (BHA Masters Committee) and Sam Brooks producing the Masters Draws. The table on the next page lists relevant dates for each of the BHA fixture competitions. Refer to the Director of Competition's report later in this publication for more details. Once again the BHL (Senior Men's) and BWHA (Senior Women's) Finals Series were held jointly. Not only is the staging of these matches together helpful to many players and their families, it also produces a more carnival like atmosphere whereby supporters have the opportunity to watch more finals matches at each venue. We hope to build on this for 2012 and to achieve further integration of regular fixtures throughout the coming Season. To this end, officials of both BHA and BWHA have already commenced exploratory meetings on this very important issue. I wish to thank those who were directly involved in producing this year's fixture draws, Russell, Sam, June and Alex. Once a list of teams is known, it is relatively easy to produce a round-robin draw of the type we normally use in Hockey. It is the allocation of dates, timeslots, and venues that requires the majority of effort. It is never an easy task, so thank you once again. Jobs well done! The continuation of Under 7 and Under 9 on Friday nights appears to be a hit with players and parents alike. The adoption of school terms as a basis for scheduling the Under 7 and Under 9 competitions appeared to be good in theory, however 2011 saw some exceptionally short terms. This has highlighted the need for flexibility in this area and the notion that school terms be used as a guide only.
COMPETITIONS
This year saw an increase in the number of turf teams to 52 teams competing in BHL1 to 5. While there has been some reduction in the numbers playing on grass, these additional turf teams and the continuing strong Masters competition has seen us maintain our player numbers. While the reduced numbers playing grass hockey is disappointing, the Association remains committed to offering a grass competition. A midweek open competition can be offered to provide a different competition time that may be attractive to players who cannot play on weekends. Given the success of other sports played during the week, this potential competition may attract more players by offering competition away from the traditional weekend programs. Congratulations to all premiership winning teams and players of the finals. The finals series produced some good skilful hockey and exciting matches. In particular, well done to Commercial on their sixth straight BHL1 premiership success, this is an outstanding achievement and a record that will stand for some time. (Details of premiership winners, runners up and players of the finals are presented later in the report.) Thank you to all players for your participation in the 2011BHA competitions.

A thank you must also go to David Cole for his management of the Training Roster for BHA Clubs training at the SHC. David's involvement is designed to ensure equity amongst those Clubs who train at the SHC. He devotes a significant amount of his time to this and is thanked for a job well done.
STANDING COMMITTEES
During 2010 I was required to form a Judiciary Panel on nine (9) occasions. Messrs Philip Hack (UNI), Darren Cook (SWU), Kieren Powyer (UNI), and David Reardon (LAB) were the official members of the BHA Judiciary Committee. However, I was required to call on several other members to serve on these Panels when one or more of the official members were unavailable. Others who served were: George Economous (BUL), Bruce Luck (BUL), Frank Coman (NTH), Ben Smith (KWS), Thomas Martin (QUT), Gary Day (PRStA), and Simon Reynolds (POL). I wish to thank them all for their time and commitment. The Appeals Committee was required twice this year. I wish to thank Todd Fuller (EAS), Mike Corlett (VAL), David Cole (SWU), Gary Day (PRStA) and Kieran Powyer (UNI) who were variously called upon to serve on this committee. Many of the Judiciary outcomes were once again posted on the BHA Website under Admin. Many outcomes from previous years and links to download the Judiciary and Appeals Rules are also accessible from there. The main benefit of this is that it provides an understanding of the processes involved to players and officials alike. It may also provide some level of deterrent to prospective offenders, though that remains unproven. The Representative Team Selection Committees did an excellent job during 2011. By providing their selections in a timely manner, it allows those responsible for arranging team training, accommodation and travel, and uniform distribution to do their jobs. A Grounds Committee was not considered necessary and was not formed for 2011.
REPRESENTATIVE
I wish to congratulate all players, Managers, Coaches and Selectors for their efforts. BHA Representative Teams had a very successful year across the board in 2011. Please refer to Peter Harten's (BHA Director of Sporting Outcomes) report later in this booklet. The results for individual teams are listed in the second half of this booklet, along with team photos where they were available.
COMMUNICATIONS
The Internet remains the primary means of communication with Clubs. Documentation and forms, fixture draws, representative team announcements, match reports, meeting notices, general news, updates and much more is provided through the BHA Website (www.bha.org.au) to the Clubs and their members. The design and maintenance of the BHA Website is carried out by yours truly. Clubs and their Delegates are generally contacted by means of emails with respect to important matters and information. Susan Johnston, the Association's Bookkeeper also makes use of the Internet to directly deposit payments to individuals for Umpiring and Technical Bench duties, and conversely to send invoices directly to, and to accept payments directly from, Members and Clubs. I thank Sam Brooks for assisting with the posting of results and Representative Teams information on the Website as well as for the huge amount of assistance he has provided in the production of this publication. Once again I wish to thank Lee Oliver for his reporting of all things Hockey both on the BHA Website and in the newspapers at large. In particular, Lee's match reports are eagerly awaited by a regular and growing number of visitors to the BHA Website. Currently our sport is enjoying quite a bit of exposure in the local newspapers. All Members are encouraged to contact their local newspapers to let them know that you appreciate Hockey related content and to encourage them to continue doing so. I wish to thank Garry Royle for providing content throughout the year for the BHA Masters section of the BHA Website (Competitions). Garry was provided with a login allowing him to directly add items such as fixture info, forms, team lists and news items. The BHA
MEETINGS
The BHA Board of Management will have met on eighteen (18) separate occasions by the time of the 2012 AGM. The first of these was held on 17th January 2011. The General Committee (BHA Board, Club Presidents and Delegates) met for General Committee Meetings (GCM's) on eight (8) occasions excluding the AGM. Meetings were generally well attended. As always a few Clubs remain noticeable by their continued absences. This year will see the Annual General Meeting held prior to the Corporate Planning sessions. This is in recognition that in the past the Corporate Planning sessions were held with the previous year's Board of Directors in place rather than with the Directors for the upcoming year. The 2012 Annual General Meeting (AGM) was therefore scheduled for Monday 21st November 2011 at the State Hockey Centre. The Corporate Planning meetings are scheduled for Sunday 27th November 2011 at the Hamilton Town Hall, and Wednesday 7 th December 2011 in the Players' Room at the State Hockey Centre. All Board of Management Meetings were held in the BHA Office at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie. The General Committee Meetings were held in the Hockey Queensland Players' Room next door to the BHA Office.

Umpiring Committee was also provided with a login and posted Umpire allocations directly into the Fixture lists each week. BHA also contributes to the management of the Burringbar Park Facility at Chermside. Two members of BHA's Board serve on the Board of BHMG (Greg Swann and Paul Saunders), BHA's Bookkeeper, Susan Johnston is responsible for keeping the BHMG books and yours truly is responsible for the BHMG Website (www.brishockey.org.au). It provides access to online roster spreadsheets and query forms and has been found by most to be simple and straight forward to use. Regular users are the Clubs of BHA and BWHA, Schools and the Associations themselves. Other Websites are also maintained by BHA and include the Brisbane Hockey gateway site www.hockeybrisbane.org.au which provides a simple pathway to both BHA and BWHA Website via an easy to remember address, the Qld Premier League & State Open (PL&SO) Championships Website www.bha.org.au/premier, and the Snippets of History Website at www.bha.org.au/history which amongst other items of interest also contains the records of the past winners, runners-up, etc.
TREASURER'S REPORT
The Brisbane Hockey Association Inc. Financial Statements 2010 2011, year ending 30 September 2011, are submitted to the member Clubs and appear in this Annual Report. Once again, it is pleasing to note that the majority of the budget was within very acceptable tolerances. Any budget is an extremely complex arrangement and it has to be remembered that a budget is always an educated estimation. On the income side, the only disappointing figure is Queensland Hockey Promotions, which did not achieve the expected income, but there seems to be some confusion with the changeover at the helm of Hockey Queensland. Savings were made against the budgeted expenses, most notably in Administration. Senior umpiring costs outstripped income due to an unbudgeted increase to BHL 1 umpires and the number who were deemed to be of that standard. Brisbane Hockey Association, in conjunction with Brisbane Womens Hockey Association, continued broadcasting Division 1 games for both associations on QCTV, which changed to Digital towards the end of the season. Brisbane Hockey Management Group Inc, a BHA joint venture, has now been in operation for 30 months and functioning well. BHMG Inc was fortunate to obtain an extraordinary grant from the Queensland State Government and STI resurfaced Burringbar with Olympia synthetic turf in time for the past season. Planned are rebuilding of the dugouts, commentary box, a new scoreboard and if budget permits terraced viewing area. Leonie Marsden continued the work that Sam Brooks had begun, entering and maintaining of Sporting Pulse and I thank them both for their efforts. Norm Ludwig, undertook the onerous task of checking and compiling of the direct payments for First Aid, Umpires and Technical bench. My thanks and admiration to Norm for managing this enormously time consuming task. Susan Johnston, our accounts genius who, in one short day per week, manages to keep our accounting system under control, paying wages, bills and accounts. Susan somehow also unravels the accounts for Brisbane Hockey Management Group. Her cheerful, helpful disposition belies her ultra professional abilities, making the BHA and BHMG accounts an easy task for the auditors. Greg Swan, President of BHA and chairman of Brisbane Hockey Management Group who managed, liaised, cajoled and booked all of the representative travel and accommodation requirements. Add to that the seven day a week interruptions from various clubs and individuals perusing an opinion or decision. Gregs thoughtful and considered opinions do this association a great service. June Grant, for her ongoing valued assistance with all things related to the junior divisions. To all clubs secretaries and treasurers, thank you for their voluntary time and effort in continuing to manage and maintain the running of their clubs. My appreciation and thanks to the General Secretary and backstop of BHA in Kim Rendell for assistance in dealing with account enquires, from individuals and clubs and overseeing the banking. To my fellow board members, for interesting, stimulating debates at board level and your camaraderie away from the meetings. This may well be my last report, in this role and I would challenge someone to take over this vitally important and necessary position.
BHA OFFICE
The BHA Office which is located at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie, is at the centre of much of BHA's administrative activity throughout the year. The BHA Office houses the Regional Coaching Director, Mick Evans, the BHA Hockey Development Officer, Sam Brooks (part-time) and myself, the BHA General Secretary, and is used for BHA Board meetings. Susan Johnston, also visits the Office one day a week to perform her duties as the Association's Bookkeeper. We enjoy a harmonious working environment and I would like to thank Mick, Sam and Susan for their dedication to the Association in their respective roles. A frequent visitor to the Office is Norm Ludwig. He volunteers his time, amongst other things, to process the claims for payment of Umpires and Technical Bench personnel. Thanks Norm! I wish to acknowledge and thank June Grant for her assistance with Junior related matters. I wish also to thank Sonja Taylor for her efforts involved in providing items of the BHA representative uniform for sale to players of all age groups.
CONCLUSION
In closing, I wish to thank all who assist and contribute to the operation of this Association. It is the involvement and commitment of volunteers and paid personnel alike that provides the means for this Association to function. Without dedication of this kind the Association would have struggled a long time ago. I wish to thank the BHA President, Greg Swann, for his dedication to the cause and his continuing support. BHA extends its condolences to the passing of loved ones and family friends during the year. Finally but not least, I thank my wife Mary and my family for their continued support and understanding.

support, I have enjoyed my time in trying to provide the best for hockey and the players in Brisbane. I wish the new BHA Board well for the upcoming 2012 season and offer a thank you to those that have supported the direction I have tried to take with the Brisbane representative program of the last 5 years. Yours in hockey always.
The 2011 Season saw myself back on the Board in the role of Director of Competitions. I was pleased to return to this responsibility after a one year sabbatical. 2011 was a successful season with much collaboration and support from all Directors, clubs and associations. Throughout the year a close cooperative working relationship between BHA and BWHA allowed the BHL draw to be inline with the BWHA draw. This was an endeavour to have club teams together at the same venue where possible throughout the season. At this point I would like to acknowledge the tremendous support and cooperation of Jenny Heron from BWHA. This season BHL fixtures were arranged in a home and away format. Due to the allocation of home venues, it worked out that three clubs had only seven games at home as they all had the same home venue. The home and away format will be considered further next season to try and even out the number of teams per home venue. CHL was a small competition this year allowing fixtures to again all be played at the one venue - Finsbury Park. This would have been only a five team competition had it not been for Kim Rendell who created another team (Barbarians) by combining player Clubs who didnt have sufficient numbers to enter a team on their own. What happened to Shaw Park for seniors you ask? The fields were filled every week with our enthusiastic Juniors. Thank you to all who are supporting the upcoming talents of tomorrow. Thanks must go to the Umpires Committee for arranging officials for the fixture games during the season and Vets Committee for organising the Vets competition. The Junior competition would not have been possible without the huge input of June Grant and Sam Brooks. In closing I would like to extend my thanks and best wishes to all who have assisted me this season, in particular, Kim Rendell whose job often extends well beyond his office hours. Also to my family for endless hours of listening and technical support.

The sport of Hockey is a genuine team activity and as stated in my 2010 report it is incumbent upon participants [Players, Officials, Umpires and Supporters alike] to share in the workload associated therewith if our Association is to grow. A vital component of team work is the necessity for all Clubs to assume ownership of our sport coupled with an unerring commitment to the relevant Codes of Conduct/Ethics pertaining to the Roles adopted by the various participants. The duly approved and published BHA Mission Statement and associated Core Values are:Our Mission is to:
Achieve growth in participation in the sport of hockey in Bris Strengthen and then extend the base of hockey Clubs within
our jurisdiction on a sustainable basis. Our Core Values are: Our Association is built on three core values:
Healthy competition on the field; and Active co-operation off the field; and Mutual respect at all times.
Effective Governance of an Amateur Organisations functions requires a significant contribution from its various stakeholders with an emphasis upon co-operation and commitment from all members. Instances throughout 2011 indicated a deficiency in the knowledge/understanding of our universally agreed Mission and Core Values and their application together with a defiantly delinquent attitude towards objectively designed Operational improvements to the Associations functionality and the performance of individuals roles. Having regard for the specifically designed Mission Statement and its accompanying Core Values it is patently evident that all participants should conduct a stringent review of their private motives with a view to applying their attributes towards a holistic approach to a uniquely satisfying family sport rather than promoting personal agendas cooperation in lieu of confrontation.

SPORTING OUTCOMES
Once again, 2011 can certainly be regarded as a successful representative teams program. All teams performed well and did themselves, their parents and siblings proud. Again there were 3 teams in each age group and this continues to offer opportunities to players to play in representative hockey and continue their hockey journey. There are many instances of players starting in the third team in an age group and as they get older and continue their development they work their way into the number one team. This type of involvement can only be good for hockey as it continues to keep the interest of all the players in hockey as they gain more friends and experience new things whilst away with a representative team. Once again I offer my congratulations to Mick Evans and Sam Brooks on the work they have done during the year, not only on the representative program but also from their continuing aim of developing players to allow them to achieve their highest level of hockey performance whatever level that may be. As Im stepping down from the BHA Board for the 2012 season Id like offer thanks to Greg Swann and Kim Rendell for the support they have shown me as a director on BHA and with the changes to the representative program that have been made over the last 5 years. To ensure that Brisbane representative hockey moving forward it is time for someone else to take carriage of the program and instigate whatever changes they deem necessary to refresh our approach. Being in a position for too long can result in same old, same old, so I wish the new incumbent the best as he or she puts their own stamp on the representative program. Whilst at times it has been difficult being on the BHA Board because there is always someone who wants to offer criticism rather than

This has been my first year in this portfolio and was a large learning experience. The main focus at the start of the season was to look at the sponsorship received from Just Hockey. This enabled us to change what was received that could be used by the RCD at recruiting sessions. Over recent years the relationship between QHP and BHA hasnt been as close as we would like. As part of my role I started dialogue with them to understand the contract we had and how it works for us. This has meant that we have closer ties with QHP. With the change of management at Hockey Queensland it has become apparent that the new working relationship is still a work in progress at this time.

The other major event for the season was organising the BHA Best & Fairest dinner. After a number of years of holding this dinner in conjunction with the BWHA, this year returned to just being a BHA dinner. I would like to thank all those that were involved and espe cially Kieran Powyer from University for doing the powerpoint presentation and Tom Whetton for stepping in a the last minute to MC the night when our booked MC was unable to attend. I feel the night was a success that BHA can build on in the coming years. I would also like to thank Daniel Bedford for his contacts to provide an MC and the work he did after our booked MC pulled out at the last minute. I would finally like to thank Greg Swann and Paul Saunders for their help during the season along with the rest of the Board members and hope to see you all next year as part of the new board.

Once again a successful year with umpires has come to a close, many umpires have achieved well this season. I would like to thank Allen Schasser for his help throughtout the season he is a very valuable member of the umpiring fraternity in Brisbane and without his help I would have never been able to get everything done. Congratulations to Angus Hay umpire of the year, his contribution this year has been outstanding and his personal development as an umpire has seen an improvement for umpiring the lower divisons to umpiring his first 1st Division game with Allen down the coast. With the seasons to come we have seen some umpires retire from umpiring, this means we need to get more young and older umpires intrested. If you are one that is interested but dont know if umpiring is really for you come see Allen or myself and ask some questions. Umpiring is not easy but is not hard either. This year saw some more support towards the junior umpires with Allen, Leon and myself going down and mentoring some of our junior umpires and also some coming out on a Sunday and umpiring the lower divisons with a senior umpire. This was very successful with good feedback from all involved. BHUA seems to be in a good position, but can be made better with more peoples involvement in wanting to umpire the game they love to play. Thank you to all who helped out this year, to all umpires that travelled down to Labrador and umpired. See you all next season

2011 was a year of growth for the technical area of BHA. We welcomed new officials to Bench Duties, Jeanette Chambers, Rowan Green and halfway through the season Karyn Argent. The season generally went well but on occasions was marred by the behaviour of the players and managerial personnel both on and off the field. The constant criticism of Umpires, both technical and on some occasions personal, left a lot to be desired; so much so that it was surprising that we had Umpires for our finals. Without Umpires we do not have a game. I take this opportunity to thank all of our Technical Officials for a job well done. Also thank you to Greg Swann for his help and advice when requested. Also To Kim Rendell for his assistance and the Umpiring Fraternity for their co-operation.
INTERCITY MATCHES
This year saw another busy intercity programme. The Under 15 Coulter Shield was played at Toowoomba and Ipswich Brisbane 1 came first, Brisbane 2 were equal fifth and Brisbane 3 first in Division 2. The Under 13 were played at Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast. Brisbane 1 were equal fifth, Brisbane 2 were fourth and Brisbane 3 were fourth in Division 2. The Under 11's were played at Downey Park as a combined competition with the Southern Cross Girl's competition on 7th August. Brisbane (1) were first in Division 1, Brisbane (2) were first in Division 2 and Brisbane 3 were first in Division 3. Congratulations to all 3 Under 11 teams for finishing first in the Coulter Shield.

The Committee meetings were held on the third Monday of each month in the Hockey Queensland Players room. The attendance by delegates was very pleasing where constructive discussions on many topics were held.
CONCLUSION
The Junior Committee extends its condolences to the passing of loved ones and family friends during this year. The Chairmans role was carried out by Mr. Mark Carter and I thank him for his assistance during the year. I would also like to thank the Brisbane Hockey Association General Secretary Mr. Kim Rendell, Mr Sam Brooks for their help throughout the year. Each year a special medal is awarded to the "Best and Fairest Player" of BHL1. In order to establish a winner points are awarded in secret by the BHL1 Umpires throughout the Season. These points are then tallied and the results announced at a function at the end of the playing season. The 2011 BHA Best & Fairest Medal was awarded at a Presentation Dinner at The Holiday Inn on Saturday 27th August. The Player of the Year and winner of the 2011 BHA Best & Fairest Medal was Labrador player Mark Harris.

Due to the unavailability of spare timeslots in which to schedule the President's Trophy and Memorial Cup finals, they were not contested as separate matches in 2011. Therefore the Memorial Cup was awarded to the leading team at the conclusion of the first full round of fixtures, and the President's Trophy to the leading team in each division at the conclusion of the second full round of fixtures, in each senior division.

The Merv Harris Memorial Shield is awarded to the club with the best overall performance in the Senior Divisions. The winning club for 2011 was Pine Rivers St Andrews. The Shield was presented to the President of Pine Rivers St Andrews at the BHA Best & Fairest Medal Presentation Dinner on Saturday 27th August 2011.
While the second table calculates the maximum points each team and then each club could accumulate (if they were to win every match) the first table calculates the percentage of points actually accumulated versus those maxima. The first table lists the eligible clubs in order of performance followed by the ineligible clubs.
