To remove a Head/Flow point In the Flow / Head list, select the set of points and click Remove. 6. If you have already selected pumps, click Curves to view your edits (be sure the System Resistance Curves box is checked). Or, click Search to start a new search2. 4 Apply NPSH Margin/Criteria for Life Cycle Cost 1. This option checks the suction energy level and the minimum NPSH margin ratio against Hydraulic Institute/ANSI standard no. 9.6.1-1998. The standard clarifies misconceptions with concepts of suction energy and NPSH margin and provides practical guidance for appropriate margin to avoid cavitation damage and other serious operations problems. For more information, please contact the Hydraulic Institute on the Web at http://www.pumps.org or by telephone at 973-267-9700. 4 To calculate Available NPSH (NPSHa) 1. In Select One, choose Tank if the pump suction is connected to a storage tank with a free liquid surface, or choose Suction Gage Pressure if there is a pressure gage connected in the suction line. This is used if the pump suction is connected to a complex system and the liquid surface cannot be identified. You may choose Suction Gage Pressure even if the pump is connected to a storage tank, provided you have an actual suction gage pressure reading to enter. Figure 1 illustrates some common pump and tank systems and the measurements required to perform the NPSHr calculation for each type of system:

Figure 1 Common Pump & Tank Systems 2. If Tank is chosen, the labels in the left-hand column will sharpen and those in the right-hand column will be dimmed. The next step is to select Tank Type. The two choices are Open and Closed. Select Open if the tank is open to the atmosphere and Closed if the tank is sealed with an internal pressure applied.

Version 4.0 Adding More Advanced Attributes for a Pump Search - 5 Next, select Tank Location. Choose Above if the normal liquid level in the tank is at a higher elevation than the pump impeller centerline. Choose Below if the normal liquid level in the tank is at a lower elevation than the pump impeller centerline. The first field will be labeled Barom Press if Tank Type is Open, and will be Tank Press if Tank Type is Closed. For Barom Press, enter the barometric (atmospheric) pressure at a location close to the liquid level in the tank. For Tank Press, enter the internal pressure in the tank. For both, the value is in units of absolute pressure. In the field Vapor Press, enter the vapor pressure of the fluid, in units of absolute pressure. The next field is labeled according to whether Above or Below was selected. The value to be entered is the difference in elevation between the fluid level in the tank and the pump impeller centerline. A positive or negative sign is not needed because that is taken care of by the selection Above or Below. This value is in units of distance, and is measured vertically only. The last field in the left column is Friction Loss. This is the total friction loss in the suction line from the liquid level in the tank to the pump impeller centerline. This should include the effect of the suction line size and length, as well as all fittings between the tank and the pump. Also include the loss as the fluid exits the tank, depending on the configuration of the piping connection to the tank. The value is in units of absolute pressure. Skip to Step 4

3. If Suction Gage Pressure is chosen, the labels in the right-hand column will sharpen and those in the left-hand column will be dimmed. In the field Vapor Press, enter the vapor pressure of the fluid, in units of absolute pressure. In the field Suction Press, enter the suction pressure gage reading. The gage reading must be corrected for elevation difference between the gage and the pump impeller centerline. The gage should be located in the suction line close to the pump suction flange. If the next field, Velocity Head, is used, the value is in absolute pressure units. This is the velocity head in the suction pipe. If you dont know what this value is, you can leave this field blank and use the next two fields to enter the Flow Rate and Suction Size, and PSS will calculate the velocity head for use in the NPSH calculation. The Suction Size is the suction pipe inside diameter at the location of the suction pressure gage, measured as accurately as possible.

4. Click Calculate to calculate the Available NPSH.
