HERITAGE FOR TOMORROW

HE CHINESE HAVE LONG MEMORIES . THAT S WHY

we love designer brands: They carry a sense of heritage and tradition; theyve passed the test of time, appealing to the strong Chinese reverence for history. In recent years, Cartier, Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Bulgari have held retrospectives in Chinese museums. And one of the most informative aspects of the Chineses travels abroad is seeing these famous products up-close and learning about their rich heritage. But love of legacy must not always look backward. Tradition dies without renewed understanding, reinterpretation and innovation. As the second issue of YUE ushers in the Year of the Dragon, we celebrate cultural heritage with a look at how luxury brands use their pedigrees as starting points for their designs. Well take you on a historic tour of the boutique-lined Madison Avenue for a quintessentially New York neighborhood experience. When I was a kid, on the eve of the lunar Chinese New Year our family always had a big dinner feast. After dinner I would receive a vibrant red envelope containing fresh dollar bills that my father withdrew from the bank especially for this occasion. The custom called for sleeping with these envelopes underneath my pillow (though the firecrackers often woke me up before dawn). YUEs Red Envelope Special has indulgences for Chinese New Year or a Spring Break getaway for yourself or your family and friends: heritage- and dragon-themed watches and jewelry, resort fashion and hand bags.

Theres a telling Chinese expression: Hope for the son to grow up into a dragon and for the daughter into a phoenix. It illustrates the auspicious symbol of the dragon and the anticipated Year of the Dragon baby boom (the last one was in 2000). As secondgeneration education drives many Chinese luxury travelers overseas visits and investments, weve included a soups-to-nuts guide to education in New York City. Youll find information on how to interview private and prep schools, select a pied--terre thats good for your children and that makes a good investment strategy and parse through the immigration process. Also in this issue, our cover story features Chinese-American fashion designer Jason Wu, who has found success in a noted departure from stereotypical career paths. As I look at the special commemorative dragon coin that my father gave me in 2000, I recall what he always reminded me: Education is the best inheritance he could give me, more than any red envelopes. When it comes to fashion, my father taught me to buy the best quality that I can afford, because quality is timeless. Invest in todays best designs, ideas and education, and they will become tomorrows heritage.

PERFECTION REQUIRES TIME.

One second of silence between two critical tones. One decade of triumph between passion and talent. Lang Lang controls time just like his Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec does. Crafted in the Montblanc Manufacture in Le Locle, Switzerland.

party for a new Limelight Garden Party Collection of high jewelry and cocktail rings at PIAGETs agship store on Fifth Avenue along with Larry Boland, President of PIAGET North America. Emeralds and diamonds glitter in the secret garden of precious plants and owers with sparkles of chalcedony and pink tourmalines. Then there was a bird trying to escape from the cage with a pearl in its mouth, but still trapped in a watch with full diamonds twining the ivy leaves. Each of the cocktail rings from the Limelight collection is named after a drink. The Cocktail Mojito ring is in 18k white gold with 182 diamonds (1.52 carats). The drink itself is a 24 carat cushion-cut green tourmaline, with a 3 carat citrine stone cut to look like a lime and emerald mint leaves. Intoxicating blue, pink and ruby colors of the other designs make them a perfect holiday gift from a man who loves to spoil his wife or girlfriend. >>

SAY BON VOYAGE TO BORING THIS VACATION!

Spring is on its way and whether youre on holiday in New York City, celebrating the New Year or jet-setting to the tropics, youll want your wardrobe to match the thrill of the blossoming season. With bright and bold colors from American designer Michael Kors to prepped out prints from Louis Vuitton, weve selected the resort wear that will have you unwinding, ne dining and looking chic.

FLASH BACK TO THE 60S

RALPH LAUREN

Fashion Fact: The 1960s were an era of new fashion that would forever change the face of our closets. Style icon and supermodel Twiggy helped popularize the British Mod look. The model named for her twig-like, skinny limbs made a trend of wearing designer Mary Quants miniskirt, Christian Diors above-the-knee A-line skirt, and boxy sleeveless shift dresses. Meanwhile, rst lady Jacqueline Kennedy (or Jackie O.) made the pillbox hat and three-piece pink Chanel suit a staple of American womens wear and a paragon in fashion history.

CHANEL

MICHAEL KORS

After founder Coco Chanels passing in 1971, Karl Lagerfeld stepped in to revive the French brands legacy in the 1980s. Lagerfeld was able to redeem Chanels reputation of modern luxury and elegance by adding a touch of glamour and edginess. Today these 60s inspired looks channel both the sophistication of a Chanel suit with the freedom and energy of the Mods. American Designer, New York native and CFDA award winner Michael Kors reboots the look in his collection with dramatic neon colors, bulky sunglasses, and kitschy fanny-packs. Chanel trades Bohemian for sophistication with this shift dress adorned in colorful geometric shapes and beaded trimming. Donatella Versace is a Mod and modern mix, referencing 1960s French cinema star Brigitte Bardot, the Bond Girls (of the James Bond movie franchise) and the bright, daring psychedelic swirls of the Hippie movement. Wear these looks with knee-length boots to edge them out or keep it simple with neat heels or f lats.

MAKE A SPLASH WITH COLOR

Fashion Fact: Eveningwear is the time for glamour. However, putting your best panache-foot forward will often mean being held back by black gowns and simplistic designs. While we are fond of the little black dress just as much as the next fashion aficionada, there is no sense (or fashion sense) in fading into the crowd. In the right color, even minimal designs can make dramatic entrances. Of course there is nothing boring about the designers weve chosen. Dior featured delicate white embroidery on a demure long sleeve navy blue chiffon f loor-grazing dress. Dior featured delicate white embroidery on a demure long sleeve navy blue chiffon f loor-grazing dress. Versaces collection this season included a stunning asymmetrical white mini-dress with a neckline cutout and bold magenta and yellow print. J. Mendels collection, inuenced by Utahs geographical landscape after designer Giles Mendels trip to the southwest state, showcased ready-to-wear colorblocking in ery corals, blacks and taupes. Of all the garments it was the silky green and chartreuse paneled evening gown that proved worthy of mentioning. The body-con t in the front opens up into a tail of stunning bewilderment in the back. We couldnt go on without a nod to Christian Diors chiffon, cobalt blue evening dress. The white beading detail is bohemian and enchanting, while the t is easy and lavish. Simple designs, bold colors: brilliant dresses.

Fashion Fact: Prep style rst began as Northeastern Ivy League culture in the 1950s, having a huge revival in the 80s with the publication of Lisa Birnbauchs book Ofcial Preppy Handbook. Although the tongue-in-cheek book was meant as a satire it created a prep resurgence, allowing designers like Ralph Lauren to reinvent the exclusively worn argyle, oxford and boat shoe style with the introduction of the Polo shirt. Prep was able to transcend the tradition of Connecticut clothiers J. Press and Brooks Brothers of Madison Avenue (the quintessential prep designers of the 1950s) into new form through popular 80s brands Lacoste, Tommy Hilger and, of course, Ralph Lauren. Today prep returns; when longtime friend of Louis Vuitton Design Director Julie De Libran, Sophia Coppola decided to collaborate on a complete line the result was a Parisian inspired recracker of red, white and blue. Rompers, A-line skirts, boat-necks and raincoats made for some real must-have pieces this season. What caught our eye was this pair of red trousers with black side seam, perfect for strolling down Madison Avenue or sipping a cocktail poolside. For the daintier scholar Pradas line is lush with creamy pastels, oral prints and cutesy sweaters, like this pleated coral, A-line dress and muted yellow cardigan. Fendi keeps it sporty and stylish with a silky, emerald green, three-quarter sleeve jacket, great for the girl on the go in the cooler spring months. Meanwhile, Creative Director Frida Giannini keeps true to the 1950s Ivy attire with this three-piece Gucci ensemble. A studious, but chic navy blazer and white turtleneck with gold neckline detail, coupled with modern, skinny-t, red pants will have you begging to be bookish.

FANCY YOURSELF A PRINT

Fashion Fact: The use of prints and textiles in clothing has been around as long as fashion. In fact, during the 15th century the textile business was the most protable trade in the world. It is no wonder prints have made the careers of some of fashions best-known designers. Florentine designer Emilio Pucci became known for his kaleidoscopic prints worn by Elizabeth Taylor and Jackie O. in the 60s, while Missonis geometric and zig-zag knitwear remain recognizable until this day. There are many prints and many ways to wear them. In 2011 there was scarce a designer who didnt mix punchy prints and patterns to turn a collections volume up. With spring just around the corner youll want to stand out amongst the blooming owers and greenery. Check out Chanels beaded collar maxi dress with swirling magentas, teals and blues and ruched waistline. MaxMara has a beautiful maxi-blouse cum dress with bold red ower prints that is perfect for breezy lunches. Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen was both militant and wistful as the McQueen line posthumously becomes more conservative. The subtlety of this silky chocolate leopard print cocktail dress with leather utilitarian belt is impudent and enthralling. Last, but certainly not least, while Ralph Lauren did not put out a resort wear collection this year we had to include this enchanting evening dress from the designers spring 2012 collection. The frosty glow and understated metallic print with beaded straps makes for the essential show stopping dress.

SPRING IS THE SEASON WHEN THE FINE LINE BETWEEN

work and play is blurred, and when the kinder weather permits men to exchange their winter wear for a sleeker and lighter wardrobe. Instead of the tried-and-true spring wardrobe of khakis and a polo, here are a few options that make a gentleman look stylish and appropriate in any setting: A gray Giorgio Armani two-buttoned jacket, paired with a silver t-shirt and dark trousers that end or breaks just at the ankle or above it, gives a gentleman a more relaxed and stylish grace. Or a DSquared2 denim shirt worn underneath a tailored suit jacket and a pocket square maintains a business-like feel, while the khaki pants and sandals provide a gentle and playful counterbalance. Springtime affords men the chance to experiment with colors and patterns. This season, we suggest a Z Zegna blue blazer vibrant print goes great with dark sneakers and a striped t-shirt. A light blue suitcase pulls everything together, adding maturity to the outts overall youthfulness and making summer travel a breeze. One can ditch the sport coat entirely, opting instead for a Dolce & Gabbana denim shirt and sunglasses, paired seamlessly with shorts and a snappy hat. But if youre too attached to your suits, wearing lighter materialslike cotton, glen plaid, and even linen helps keep you looking professional and dashing. Herms 2012 Mens collection featured a particularly refreshing look of navy and white striped button down in a attering t, with loose white trousers, the look is particularly relaxing if the last button is left unattended This season Ermenegildo Zegna offers some great options, including a versatile heather gray two-button suit. A light scarf underneath provides enough warmth should one be walking to work on a crisp spring morning. And if a tie is a must in ones outt, why not pair a closely tailored gray suit with a matching gray tie and and to offset the monochrome nature of the outt a pair of black shoes with white soles, all courtesy of DKNY. A dark-colored suit is always a fashionable option. To adapt the classic look for the spring season, we suggest pairing a one-buttoned Dolce & Gabbana suit with a skinny dark tie and nishing off the look with dress shoes sans socks- the perfect touch to show that spring has indeed arrived. One can also eschew the tailored look for a loose-tting Giorgio Armani suit, in which the light-grey dress shoes are accentuated by the absence of socks and the high break in the suit pants.

IN THE MID -EIGHTEENTH CENTURY A NEW ACCESSORY CHANGED, LITERALLY AND metaphorically, how European and American society ladies carried themselves: the handbag, in its previous and more recent incarnations, has since had a long and interesting history. When we consider the elegant designs from todays top designer brands such as Chanel, Gucci, Fendi, Prada, and Dior, it seems that weve come a long way from the modest leather satchels depicted in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. Moving closer to the sleek designs of todays Chanel or Prada collections, it was popular for luxurious Europeans in the 15th century to attach a small drawstring handbag to her girdle, where it would serve as a status symbol, much like the intricately designed Bottega Veneta bags from its Spring 2012 collection.

As train travels spread in the 19th century, Europeans were more mobile than ever before. Seizing a new opportunity, luggage makers began to design for style and not just travel functionality. Luggage-users coined the term handbag for the small hand-sized luggage that soon became ubiquitous. In fact, many of todays most reputable makers of handbags got their start as luggage makers. In the early 20th century, a young Guccio Gucci working in a hotel in Paris became enthralled by the ornate luggage of wealthy Parisians. Signore Gucci returned to his hometown of Florence, Italy and promptly established a shop in 1920 that sold artisan leather goods in the classic Florentine style still revered in todays Gucci collections. For spring 2012, Gucci presents the signature Soho style bag, a perfect souvenir from a trip to New York City. This stunning leather bag comes complete with light gold clasps and a comfortable shoulder strap, and is available in off-white, red, purple or a bold multi-color plum python. The dashing Diana bag with the signature GG beige and ebony fabric comes with a black leather trim and an intricate curved bamboo handle and is the perfect-sized bag for a stroll around Manhattan. Fendi, another pillar of Italian high-fashion, rst opened in 1925 as a fur and leather shop in Rome. A Fendi must-have handbag this New Year is the elegant Peek-a-boo bag in classic black. The stylish slouch purse is fashioned from goat leather and may be unhooked at the sides to display the nished interior of gold leather. Much like Gucci, Mario Prada along with his brother, Martino, opened a leather goods shop in Milan. The store specialized in handbags and other leather goods, setting the bar for the popular Prada bags of today such as the bejeweled Raso clutch. Rubies and Diamonds decorate the entire front ap of this regal satin clutch that will make its owner feel like the queen she is.

BULGARI

When thinking about the modern handbags that we know and love, its easy to understand how handbags in the early 20th century were more than just hand-held luggage. They became a means of expression for women who could choose from small clutches to tted leather bags. Bulgari also made a small shoulder bag in green leather with light gold plated and enamel Serpenti closure, with precious snake body shaped chain. Larger handbags, such as the large over-the-shoulder boulevard bag, popular today in designs by Herms and Dior were common among working women during that time. After World War II, as women began to travel more, the pochette a decorative clutch without handles encouraged women to show off their style. If only those women could have seen the new Dior line designed by German artist Anselm Reyle this season. First debuting in a pop-up display at Art Basel Miami Beach in December and now decorating the Saks 5th Avenue department store window, these colorful purses are a must-have for the artsy and the fashionable alike in the new year. The Dior brand has a long history of art association--in fact, the French designer himself used to own a gallery in France where he sold to the likes of Pablo Picasso. These ashy Camo bags, although drawing on the camouage motifs, are not meant to cover up. Debuted just in time for the Chinese New Year, they have been quilted creatively with Reyles neon thread and are bursting with New Year cheer. Chanel is another designer brand that revisits this season Coco Chanels rich legacy of handbag designs. Coco Chanel famously made history with her gold or metallic chain-strapped and quilted leather handbags in February 1955, giving them the nickname of 2/55. For the spring 2012 cruise season Chanel brings traditional sensibility to a modern day version of the 2/55. With new and exciting takes on time-tested designs, Chanel presents a modernized spring 2012 version of the Classic Flap Bag, a quilted double lamb-

skin mini bag that sits comfortably on the wearers waist. If youre looking for evening elegance, be sure to check out this seasons unique black and white flap bag, a luxurious glazed calfskin flap bag complete with a chain and shoulder strap for the woman around town. Another Chanel bag not to miss is the quilted flap bag in yellow. With its smooth diagonal quilting and charming mademoiselle clip, this bag is perfect for an evening in the city. The spring season bags employ bold colors while using natural fabrics and materials. MaxMara, an Italian brand established in the 20th century, brings chic sensibility this new year with contemporary Margaux East West Shopper bag. If you are after an American experience, Coach is one American brand founded in 1941 in a New York loft and has reinvented itself a few years ago by appealing to the young and the adventurous with freshly updated looks every season. If a classic New York style is what youre after, the classic Vachetta Willis is a smart and sophisticated design that will accompany nearly every outfit. Another excellent choice is the bold leather Colorblock Willis, available in an eye-catching baby blue perfect for the season. Handbags are not only rich in design history, they are also good ways to invest in a new look and practical gift choices. Cheers to the Chinese New Year red envelopes and your next handbag! n

who live on and around it, but it certainly opens its doors to all. With the gush of tourists flocking onto Fifth Avenue. You can walk down this fabled Madison avenue, and enjoy the museums, antiques, coffee shops, and boutiques that amuse New Yorks elite. This prime real estate hosts some of the worlds most notable fashion houses: Herms, Ralph Lauren, Gucci, and of course, CHANEL. John Maitino, Chanels high jewelry director, spoke of Madison as setting a stage for the collection, to create a unique atmosphere for Fine Jewelry with its own special environment. Madison at 64th is the heart of the Upper East Side and its most exclusive residential area. Additionally, it draws incredibly sophisticated International visitors.

Boutiques on Madison blend seamlessly into the neighborhood, with many designed like high-end homes. Philip K. Howard, a corporate lawyer and director of the Municipal Art Society, explained that this residential palate is perhaps more coincidence than design: by making it much more difcult to construct new buildings, the district has succeeded in stimulating investment in existing storefronts... a major reason behind the emergence of Madison as the worlds premier shopping street. This lovely coincidence has manifested on the entire street. Ralph Laurens agship is the reincarnation of the historic Rhinelander mansion, infusing the classic Ralph Lauren romance into each visit. Herms two townhouses split its men and womens collections, both decorated exquisitely with iconic bags, ties, and more. Chanel is no different, with design elements taken from Mademoiselle Chanels Paris apartment. Maitino spoke of the the space as having a a residential feel so a client is like a guest in our home. Clients can sit comfortably on one of the sofas to look at the jewelry and try it on. Each room has its own destination, like the watch library that displays the collection of watches. Chanel epitomizes what Madison Avenue has to offer discerning shoppers, with classic style motifs reinvented season after season. You will discover, among many other things, the various styles borrowed from Coco Chanels trips to Orient or inspired by the nest materials used in her design. This carries over as well to the jewelry and watches, constantly reimagining the famed CHANEL icons and codes, like pearls or camelias, in the most modern, beautiful way. CHANEL Watches are about craftsmanship, whether in the creation of the high tech ceramic with the famed J12, or in the research CHANEL does with its technical movements, such as the Retrograde, Tourbillon and the 3125 Calibre.

The luxury and worldliness of Madison Avenue is hardly limited to the clothing boutiques. Enrich your day with a visit to the Whitney Museum, a hub of contemporary American art and home to Danny Meyers newest restaurant, Untitled. Perhaps you might find yourself near Lady M, a bakery with cakes so refined it seems like a crime to eat them. Other treats nearby include La Maison du Chocolat and Ladure, chocolates and macaroons in the French tradition. To take it all in, you might choose to simply stay at the Mark, the Palace Hotel, or the Four Seasons, returning day after day to breathe in the luxury. The Upper East Side zip code of 10021 has as strong demographics as youll see anywhere, said Marshall Felenstein, a Manhattan consultant who assists European retailers. Its also a very strong hotel area, so theres a tremendous combination of rich residents and visitors. To have a brush with history, the legendary Carlyle Hotel might pique your interest. Now owned by Hong Kongs Cheng Yu-Tung, the decadence that served the Kennedys and Princess Diana can be at your disposal. Start your day with breakfast or brunch at these hotels or saunter over to the many roadside cafes that line the streets.

COVER STORY

ON AN UNUSUALLY FRIGID (EVEN FOR NYC) JANUARY EVENING IN 2009, 26 year old Chinese American designer Jason Wu sat down with his friends for what was supposed to be a quiet evening of pizza take-out and TV. The program they had gathered for was the celebratory Inaugural Gala for Barack Obama, undoubtedly to witness history as the rst black President of America made his debut. Little did they know that pizza-chomping amongst them, Jason would make history himself later that evening as the 44th First Lady of the United States waltzed into a dance with the President in his design. I was in complete shock for ten minutes, Wu tells YUE in between ttings at his Manhattan studio, The moment I saw it, I realized we were in a different era, and because I was a part of that, I was thinking about what it could implicate for Asian and Chinese Americans. The stunning white chiffon gown that cascaded down Michelle Obamas statuesque gure was handmade by Jason and submitted just the November prior. He admits to not having high hopes despite working on the dress for months, painstakingly hand sewing the thousands of crystal and organza ower blossoms adorning the chiffon gown. How was he willing to devote so much time to a dress he wasnt even sure would get any airtime? The refreshingly shy Jason pauses for thought before giving a reply that is consistent with his dichotomous persona of wide-eyed innocence and rened elegance. When I was working on the dress, I never really thought about how big it would be, I just wanted to make it pretty. Wu says, To me when Im working and when I have my heart set on something, thats all I concentrate on, nothing else. I dont think about what ifs and dream up scenarios. My concentration was just to make a dress for Michelle Obama that would suit her. That was my mission. That display of traditional Chinese values and work ethic is the work of his incredibly progressive mother, as Jason describes her. Growing up in Taipei, Jason knew from a young age that he wanted to be an artist; in particular, he had developed an afnity for dressing up dolls, I didnt grow up with trucks and robots like other boys. Even in modern-day America, that cant be an easy conversation, My sons interests lean toward Barbie dolls. Sufce to say Jasons parents didnt have the support of other family members and friends when they encouraged young Jasons hobby with visits to bridal shops and gifted sewing machines. Mrs. Wu could not have foreseen the groundbreaking success that his childhood hobby would one day manifest, yet she carefully fostered Jasons growth as an artist even as the majority of her fellow Chinese mothers sought to raise doctors and lawyers. The Chinese view of artists is always that they are starving and penniless and I am sure at some point she has believed that I may well end up living at home for the rest of my life. Undeterred by social currents and cultural custom, Jasons parents arranged for Mrs.Wu to move to Canada with their children as Mr.Wu stayed behind in Taipei, visiting only once every 2-3 months. My parents denitely made incredible sacrices for me. I suppose my mother saw my potential before anyone else, Jason recounts. Tiger Mother? Jason laughs at the suggestion, She was a strong mother for sure, Tiger Mother? No. She never forced me to do anything I didnt want to do.

LEf T: Michelle Obama wears a bright canary sheath dress from Jason Wu during her visit with the President to Romes Quirinale Palace for a meeting with the Italian President. A BOVE: Jason poses with his muse Michelle Obama as his design is archived for the National Museum of American Historys First Ladies at the Smithsonian exhibit.

It seems that it doesnt take a Tiger Mother to raise an Asian wonder, but Jason jumps in before any conclusions are made, I did have one thing to contest with her, I wanted to go to an arts high school because I was absolutely sure I wanted to be an artist. Jason divulges, But my mother insisted on boarding school in Connecticut, so we made a deal, she told me that if I went to the school of her choice, I could do whatever I wanted for college. In a reflective moment, Jason tells YUE, I was upset with my mother, but having been in the profession for a few years now, I know you cant just be educated in fashion if you want to be a designer. I am so glad I went to boarding school and received a good education and foundation, it was where I matured. And well educated he was, Loomis Chaffee, the prestigious Connecticut academy whose annual tuition outpaces even some Ivies, boasts an impressive notable alumni list that includes John D. Rockefeller III, two Olympic gold medalists and a US Secretary of State. Asked of his Chaffee years, he remembers one event in particular, a trip he made by himself one unassuming Sunday to New York. 16-year-old Wu had booked himself a business meeting with executives at Integrity Toys. To call his first business proposal fruitful is to call Yao Ming tall. Jason would begin a long-lived high-end doll collection for the company and be promoted to creative director in a years time. But the trip was significant for a second reason; it cemented his love affair with the city. It was the first time I had been here, and I knew instantly that I wanted to live here. Its such a melting pot and hosts so many cultures. Jason says of his home of 6+ years, Even after having been to so many cities around the world and studying abroad in Tokyo and Paris, I still feel the most comfortable in New York. Jason believes that it is precisely New Yorks cosmopolitan nature that has made the emergence of a group of ber successful Chinese American fashion designers such as Anna Sui, Alexander Wang, Derek Lam, Peter Som, Phillip Lim and Vera Wang possible. I think it says something about this generation, our cultural upbringing and about the industry, Jason offers, I am really proud to be a part of it, as a group we definitely speak louder.

I think it is more than the work ethic that we were brought up with, even for myself, I see how Chinese aesthetics has worked into my designs, Jason tries to explain the phenomenon, I havent incorporated any obvious Chinese visual elements, but so many of the subtleties in what I do is Chinese, including the love and respect for amazing history and attention to detail. Indeed, his designs are known for their high quality craftsmanship that seems to hark back to another time. In that way my Asian heritage has inuenced me a great deal, although it felt important for me to show versatility as an artist and not be so clich by doing blatantly Chinese designs, I may tackle Asian elements in the future. Its funny how right now in the industry, an Asian person tackling Chinese-inspired design almost seems atypical. Jason continues, There is such an emphasis on embellishment and embroidery in Chinese clothing, and I see that in my work too, its natural because after all it is the culture I grew up with. Looking ahead, Jason sees a lot of room for growth in his future, Besides handbags which is leading the way next year and my RTW collection, I would love to work in the beauty arena. Jason has already worked with cosmetics powerhouse Shiseido in an unprecedented collaboration in the Chinese market, but he hopes for more, I want people to be able to enjoy my aesthetic and not just my clothes. How will fashions Chinese golden boy be celebrating the Lunar New Year? The humorous Jason complains with a hint of regret that the annual holiday always seems to fall on the days before Fashion Week in February. Although Jason will be locked up in his studio nishing the years most important collection, Jasons parents will be having a big celebration in Taipei before ying to New York to join him at his show. Asked for a New Years wish in Chinese for our readers, a twinkle of playful mischief shines through Jasons Chinese sense of propriety. Hmm he muses, LONGNIAN KUAILE! This translates to Happy Year of the Dragon!

NEW YORK FINE DINING

JEAN-GEORGES
Jean Georges (Jean-GeorgesVongerichten) Jean Georges JojoVong Iron Chef
AS CROWDS OF PEDESTRIANS HURRY BY THE BASE OF THE TRUMP International Hotel and Tower at Columbus Circle, a few passers-by slow down to peer through the pane of glass that separates them from the kitchen of Jean Georges. This spot is the pinnacle of fine dining in New York, adored by critics and food lovers alike. On some evenings youll spot the maestro himself, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, working inside. Theres something almost inimitable about the Jean Georges experienceboth the man and the restaurant. Born in the Alsace region of France, Jean-Georges Vongerichten had achieved a solid foundation in French cuisine in his early years. But it was leaving his homeland, traveling to Thailand, Singapo re and Hong Kong in his twenties, that helped shape him into one of the worlds foremost culinary artists. Living in Asia completely changed my palate and introduced me to unique flavors I had never tried before, Vongerichten says. The flavors that I fell in love with became a huge part of my cooking style. Ever since, I cannot live without chilies. Blending classic French techniques with dramatic Asian spices, Vongerichten took New York by storm in the 1990s with his restaurants Jojo and Vong. In 1997 his eponymous Jean Georges opened at the Trump International Hotel and Tower and quickly became one of the hottest seats in town, elevating him to a household name among the citys foodies. Vongerichten was a celebrity chef before the Iron Chef craze, before there were celebrity chefs in the U.S. Fast forward to 2012: Vongerichten is now global, with restaurants in Washington, D.C., Las Vegas, the Bahamas and Shanghai, and distinctively, his NYC and Shanghai locations are the only ones to bear the Jean George name. Seventy percent of the menu in Shanghai is the same as the one in NYC. The differences come from the usage local ingredients, different herbs, vegetables and spices, Vongerichten says.

As for the chances of seeing his other culinary concepts in China? After all, it is the city where the chef finds some of his favorite foods. I believe there is a promising future for Shanghai and am always considering new opportunities, he says. My favorite dish [when traveling in China] is Sichuan Chicken and Shanghai street food, especially Xiaolongbao soup dumplings. Vongerichten has done what New Yorkers love best: to bring the old-world motif and redefine it in a way that shakes the industry. To walk the line between traditional and original is a hard act. When someone does it, we take notice. We sing praises. And when youre in New York, you owe it to yourself to make reservations. There is something truly magical about dining at the original Jean Georges. When you purchase the latest Chanel handbag, you dont expect it to have been made by Karl Lagerfield himself. But at Jean Georges New York, opportunities to sample the hands-on creations of a culinary icon are not uncommon. That aside, the experience here is extraordinary. From the moment you walk through the doors, the staff orchestrate dining perfection. The waiters are courteous and knowledgeable, each course arrives at the table at exactly the right moment, and each plate is presented with grace and precision. The sommeliersamong the best in the worldmake recommendations to suit your tastes and pair perfectly with your menu. Watching them decant your vintage is to watch artistry in motion. And if theres a special occasion, leave the creative decisions to the staff: When a perfectly decorated cake magically appears with your guests name on it, the moment is simply spectacular.

Even if youre not feeling quite up to a formal French dinner, theres a Jean Georges (to paraphrase the website) to suit every taste. My inspiration for different cuisines is inspired by my travel, Vongerichten says. For example, farm-to-table from the greenmarket in Union Square, and Thai and Southeast Asian from the five years spent in Asia. In the Upper East Side, The Mark features a more relaxed, simpler French/American dining experiencethink comfort food by Jean Georges. In the bustling shopping district of Soho, Mercer Kitchen is an exciting restaurant tucked in the basement of a boutique hotel. Near Union Square, the newest addition to the Jean Georges empire is ABC Kitchen. Located inside ABC Home, its fittingly all about farm-fresh, locally sourced produce. Planning a night out in the Meat Packing District? Start the evening sampling Asian flavors at Spice Market. Or enjoy relaxing views of the Hudson while dining at Perry Street, a great brunch place helmed by Vongerichtens son Cedric. With such a diversified portfolio of successful restaurants, we can only guess what the chef will do next, though he does drop a hint: I am looking to travel to South America in the future, so maybe that will spark my interest for something else. Finally, with Chinese New Year right around the corner, we had to ask: How will a chef with such global perspective celebrate the Year of the Dragon? I would cook dishes that I love from the places I have traveled. If I were to create a menu I would probably include dishes inspired by Cantonese and Sichuan cuisines, use XO sauces, and make soup dumplings. Can we expect to see such a menu from the chef, known for his ingenuous tasting menus, on January 23? Good Idea! Vongerichten says, chuckling. I do not have plans now, but since my daughter and wife are both Dragons, youve got my wheels turning. Fingers crossed.

originated in China, and they can be yoursa Shang Dynasty bronze vessel, a Qing dynasty porcelain vase bearing the mark of Emperor Qianlong (17111799), and a Ming dynasty scrollin the swoop of a gavel. The Chinese are proud inheritors of a tremendously long and varied tradition of art that spans ages, from 2500 B.C.E. to the current era. Not only has China created some of the worlds most important art, but it was also home to one of the greatest collectors the world has seen. During his reign from 1735 to 1796, the Qianlong Emperor became renowned as an art collector, historian, scholar and patron, and he amassed a national treasury of art that is now recognized as a symbol of Chinas imperial glory.

In that tradition, todays most potent force at such auctions are buyers from mainland China. A rare blue and white Ming-style moon flask with Qianlongs seal was hammered down at Christies last September for $2.6 millionfive times the pre-auction estimate. Not surprising, considering the countrys rapid economic growth. Chinas economic boom will likely continue to boost the prices of Chinese art while the demand remains strong. And as the attitude in favor of repatriation of Chinas scattered cultural treasures grows, artwork purchased abroad and sent back to

China is rarely seen again on the international market. The value of the diminishing pool of available Chinese masterpieces, therefore, means higher prices. The real drive in prices has very much been led by the mainland Chinese, says Sothebys vice chairman for Asian art, Henry Howard-Sneyd. And what are they buying? Anything Chinese, Howard-Sneyd says. Sales of Chinese art have grown remarkably in the past several years. At Christies, sales climbed 40 percent from 2010 to 2011. Much of these sales happen during New York Asia Week, held each March. At last years Asia Week, Sothebys and Christies broke their records, catapulting the category to the forefront of the global art market. Right now China has the ability to buy back into its culture, says Hugo Weihe, Christies international director of Asian art. To be able to buy back this heritage, you get back something. Only a city like New York, which has its own significant cultural history and artistic sensibilities, can do justice to Chinas illustrious aesthetic heritage. Here Chinese mainlanders have set their sights on jade, porcelain, bronze and scroll paintings, particularly those from the 18th century. White and bright green jade pieces are coveted for their beauty. Rhinoceros horns (purportedly aphrodisiacs) carved into libation cups, pieces unique to China, are expected to haul in hundreds of thousands per item. Chinese classical paintings, which in the past decade have seen a significant increase in value, are being auctioned at as much as 10 times their estimated value.

Sothebys Mr. Henry HowardSneyd and Christies Mr. Hugo Weihe, top auctioneers and specialists in their field, have tips for the avid buyer:
1. 2012316-24 Pick the right dates. Asia Week, March 16-24, 2012, is the next time NYC will showcase Chinese art. Find all events at www. asiaweekny.com. 2. Do your homework. Catalogs are published in advance at www.sothebys.cn http:// www.sothebys.cn and www.christies.com/chinese http://www.christies.com/chinese . All information is public, so ask for condition reports. 3. Come look at the piece. Chances are, you will respond differently to an artwork in person. Experience the piece firsthand at the pre-auction exhibition. 4. 3-5 Ask the experts. No question is ungainly. In the 3-5 days before the auction, specialists will be in the galleries, on-call, and easily approachable.

:
We stand for longevity and integrity and scholarship in the eld, Howard-Sneyd says
While collectors consider Chinese art an additional asset class, the auctioneers dont recommend buying art solely as an investment. You buy art because you love it too. That should be an important aspect. Weihe says. For high-end goods, Chinese buyers trust New Yorks venerable auction houses. Wellknown within China and the global art market as the worlds two preeminent fine art auctioneers, Sothebys, founded in 1744, and Christies, founded in 1766, have built their reputations around heritage and longevity. You can be assured that when you buy from Sothebys youre buying something with integrity. We stand for longevity and integrity and scholarship in the field, Howard-Sneyd says.

5. Register. You can only bid if youve registered online or in person. Pick up your bidding paddle before you walk into the auction room. 6. Open museum policy. An auction house is a bit like a museum; exhibitions are free and open to the public and all are welcome. 7. Dont feel pressured. You can enjoy sitting in an auction even if you dont plan to bid. There is absolutely no pressure to buy. 8. Set a target price. You should set your maximum bidding price beforehand. Be careful not to get too carried away in the moment. 9. There are many ways to bid. In addition to bidding in person, you can bid remotely via a written bid, telephone, or internet. 10. Bidding strong. Catch the eye of the auctioneer. You can wave your paddle, stand up, or shout out a much higher bid.

We guarantee authenticity and date, Christies Weihe says. The auctioneers stress that Asia Week is for not only buyers but for the curious as well. This years Asia Week, March 16 through 24, will be the citys most localized and diverse program of events focusing on Asian art. Thats when everything is on view; its a bit of a one-stop shop, says Howard-Sneyd. Everyone, whether a bidder or a tourist, is encouraged to attend the artist talks, panel discussions and exhibitions by major New York auction houses, museums and institutions. Most are free, illustrating Asia Weeks celebration not only of Asian art but of the city as a center of the art worlds finest people, expertise and work.

AUCTION HOUSES ARE NOT THE ONLY PURVEYORS OF ART, WELL regarded art dealers such as TK Asian Antiquities allows any buyer to obtain ancient Chinese art of the highest quality. Founded by Michael Teller and housed in the Fuller Building in New York City, TK Asian Antiquities sells ancient textiles, bronzes, ceramics, and precious metals, mostly covering the 4th century B.C. to the 11th century A.D. Having had 38 years of experience in Asian art, Mr. Teller agrees with the auctioneers that the Chinese economys boom has augmented the purchasing power of mainland Chinese buyers. According to Mr. Teller, the Chinese government offers precious land to collectors who want to build private museums, provided they also build a cultural facility. For these reasons, one third of TKs sales today go to mainland China instead of the meager 1 percent just a decade ago. Mr. Teller says the distinguishing characteristic between TK and larger auction houses is the special emphasis TK places on scientific authentication. Buyers are often unaware that the cleverness of forgeries makes multiple tests necessary to guarantee authenticity, since taking a sample from only one part of an artwork presumes that another part will not be falsified. To maintain a holistic method, TK employs 4 full-time researchers specializing in archaeometallurgy, x-ray fluorescence, and radiography to analyze samples in its own Williamsburg lab and simultaneously works with multiple outside scientists to produce as many as 400 pages of documentation on a single piece. Mr. Teller says this is their bread and butter, If you combine connoisseurship with proper science, you will probably end up with the right answer.

The result was an artisanal wine-cellarinspired space with vaulted ceilings and a circular tasting table. The cellar features more than 500 wines, with an emphasis on Bouluds favorite regions, Burgundy and the Rhne valley. The wine bar also serves Bouluds seasonal creations as well as bites from Gilles Verot, one of the nest charcutiers in Paris. On the hallway walls, you can read tasting notes on the wines of Chteauneufdu-Pape, Smiths favorite appellation. Last year Veritas was closed for an extensive renovation. THE MOST RECENT EDITION OF

RICH LIST, PUBLISHED ANNUALLY

by The Hurun Report, reported that the average age of all Chinese billionaires is 36, and the vast majority of them are choosing to educate their children abroad, especially in English-speaking countries. The Hurun Report also published its first Chinese Luxury Traveler White Paper in June 2011, in which it observed that second generation education is driving luxury travels, overseas property purchases and emigration. The richer the Chinese millionaires and billionaires are, the younger they send their kids abroad. This exploding trend is quickly inventing a new class of Chinese children of privilege that is completing its secondary education in countries other than China. In addition, more and more upper and middle class Chinese who, as the Chinese idiom goes, look to make their sons and daughters the dragons and the phoenixes of the future world, will inevitably begin to familiarize itself with the culture of premier private education in the United States, and most specifically with college preparatory schools based in New England and New York City. But while most of the Prep Schools in New England offer on-campus living accommodations to its students, almost none of New York City Preps do so, a fact that complicates the process for China-based parents seeking to educate their children in the elite schools of Americas most cosmopolitan city. But, for those that are confident in their choice of New York City and its offering of private schools, the course of action to enroll their child in one the citys finest is best approached in three distinct steps.

EDUCATING DRAGON KIDS

STEP 1 PICKING THE RIGHT SCHOOL

The Wall Street Journal released its most recent National rankings of all high schools in 2007 using a system by which the paper looked at freshmen classes at eight top colleges (Harvard, Princeton, MIT, Williams, Pomona, Swarthmore, the University of Chicago and Johns Hopkins), compiled the total number of students each high school sent to those schools that fall and then divided that number by total class size to find each high schools Success Rate. Of the Top 65 on that list, 13 of them, including the top three overall, were schools in New York City. After removing three public schools (Stuyvesant High School, Hunter College High School and Bard High School Early College), and the one, all-boys parochial school (Regis High School), one is left with an unofficial Top 9 list for New York City private schools that reads like an honor roll in city education; Collegiate, Brearley, Chapin, Trinity, Saint Anns School, Rye Country Day, Ramaz Upper School, Dalton, and Horace Mann. Nobody could disagree that list a very fine example of the top tier of New York City private secondary education, says Peter Feld, the Editor-in-Chief of Scooter, a parenting magazine for New Yorkers published by the Observer Media Group. College placement numbers at each of these schools is clearly impressive, but the manner in which they achieve those numbers varies starkly from one another. Some examples of these differences range from Collegiate being an all-boys institution to Brearley and Chapin being all-girls, Ramazs curriculum is deeply influenced by Jewish religious teachings while Saint Anns, despite its name, has neither religious ties nor grades and focuses most closely on arts and humanities. I would also add to this list, says Mr. Feld, further complicating things. And I would add great schools like Riverdale Country Day, UNIS (The United Nations International School) and the Fieldston School to that top tier. Factoring in two unisex institutions based in the Riverdale section of The Bronx (Fieldston and, eponymously, Riverdale Country School) and a school that was created to educate the children of foreigners posted at the United Nations creates and even broader mix of gender-specific, religious and progressive curriculum choices that could induce a very literal headache for a Chinese parent trying to make the best choice for their own Dragon Child.

American schools increasingly understand that what happens in Shanghai now affects us in ve minutes.

But that parent can take faith not only in the aforementioned strength that all of these schools have in placing students at Americas best colleges, but also in the fact that there is a growing culture of new schools being founded with the express intention to offer new formulas for foreign parents looking to educate their children in New York City but cannot find a perfect fit amongst the schools in the nominal top tier. We see our goal as preparing students for success in an increasingly international world, says Mr. Drew Alexander, the Head of School at Leman Manhattan Preparatory School, about educators at Leman which is part of the Meritas Family of Schools, a network of ten schools on three continents including schools in Geneva, Switzerland and Chengdu, China. American schools increasingly understand that what happens in Shanghai now affects us in five minutes. We believe our students need to be exposed to this reality and especially to many foreign languages. In addition to offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) option to its students, study of Mandarin is mandatory at Leman. Leman is in the process of creating a boarding component for international students, which would further separate it from almost every other private school within New York City limits which implicitly require a parent living abroad to provide housing for their own child while enrolled. Which means finding a place for ones child to live in The Big Apple.

STEP 2 BUYING A PIED-A-TERRE

Despite its reputation as, expensive, difficult to understand and generally overwhelming, the orchard that is Big Apple real estate can actually yield many ripe options for investment that can double as de facto international student housing. In fact, the market for Big Apple pied-a-terres is more perfectly aligned for Chinese students, and their investment-minded parents, than ever. According to Gordon Hoppe, a Senior Vice President and Director of Sales for Corcoran Sunshine Marketing Group, major firms like his own are acutely aware of this trend in real estate amongst Chinese buyers. Many Chinese buyers are looking to purchase for children attending school abroad, as well as an investment, says Mr. Hoppe. Chinese buyers are usually very aware of neighborhoods, says Amy Williamson, Vice President of Sales for the New York-based international real estate firm, Prodigy Network. It seems, and should be, more important to more and more buyers that I see looking for a place for their children.

Aside from Rye Country Day (in Rye, NY) our Top Tier list consists almost entirely of schools based in New York Citys toniest neighborhoods. Brearley, Chapin, Ramaz and Dalton are all on Manhattans Upper East Side, a high-wealth neighborhood that has always drawn interest from international buyers. UNIS is located south of that cluster, near a number of high-end luxury condos so far east of lower Midtown that the school itself is housed on an actual pier. Saint Anns is located in Brooklyns most historically wealthy neighborhood Brooklyn Heights, which boasts home values that rival some of Manhattans most expensive. However, a Chinese parent looking to purchase a piece of real estate that will act as both a strong investment and ideal home for their private school student may also consider Manhattans Upper West Side, which is home to both Collegiate and Trinity. In addition, Riverdale, Horace Mann and Fieldston, are all located in the Riverdale section of The Bronx. Melissa Ziweslin, a managing director of sales at The Rushmore, a luxury condominium from New Yorks Extell Development Company located on Manhattans Riverside Boulevard, says that [w] eve had many Chinese buyers looking to buy a place where they can put up a child of college age or even, in some cases, younger, says Ms. Ziweslin. Were also seeing that once these children go off to college, or graduate from college in some cases, these apartments are becoming an American home for Chinese families looking to start a new life in New York, says Ms. Ziswelin. As Chinese buyers flood into New York looking for new homes and investments, they are increasingly fanning out across the five boroughs in search of new possibilities, and above all, deals. Things are really opening up in Brooklyn, and certainly in Queens, said Andrew Barrocas, CEO of, the brokerage for the Edge. Chinese buyers are very interested in value, he added, and you cant find a better value than in the outer boroughs. Another MNS property that has seen interest from the Chinese community has been One Brooklyn Bridge Park, a huge converted industrial building next to the bridge that gives it its name. Everyone likes being close to the water and close to the park, and you cant beat these views, Elizabeth Stribling said. She is the founder of one of the citys top brokerages, and if One Brooklyn Bridge Park needed a stronger vote of confidence, Stribling sold her long-time Upper East Side home to move into one of the penthouses here. For the Chinese who prefer new developments, Corcorans top-selling broker Carrie Chang said: They (the new developments) are fresh, with the newest finishes, up-to-date appliances and technology built in, floor to ceiling windows which provide good light and views . . . .

L-haus

Like Brooklyn, Queens is home many such developments, and none has a higher concentration than Long Island City. It is close to the water and Manhattan, both appealing options for Chinese buyers. One particularly popular property has been the L-Haus, which is one stop to Midtown, an architecturally stunning building designed by Cetra Ruddy, with distinctive green facade panels and a large open lawn perfect for sunning or barbecuing in the summer. For those wanting to be in the heart of it all in Flushing, Sky View Parc seems a good place to be. Brimming with amenities and quality finishes, the development is where you dont even have to leave the complex to enjoy yourself, said Helen Lee, a director at Onex Real Estate, the developer of the project. A lot of people are looking to immigrate, which makes us great because it gives them a foot in both worlds, Lee said.

STEP 3 OBTAINING A VISA OR A GREEN CARD

The immigration politics is really complicated, says Edward J. Cuccia, a New York City-based attorney specializing in immigration law and an expert with a focus on Asian clientele. But getting visas for students is one of the less difficult things that we do. The U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (or I.C.E.) lists three major requirements for obtaining a basic student visa, referred to as an F-1: proof of residence abroad (and proven intent to not abandon that residence in favor of the U.S.), demonstrated intention to depart the U.S. upon completion of study, and possession of sufficient funds to pursue the degree for which one has been accepted. One can assume that any Chinese parent looking to educate a child in the U.S. has the means to maintain a home in China while simultaneously affording the tuition and living costs associated with a private American secondary education. Another aspect that aids the Chinese F-1 applicant is the fact that Chinas growing financial power makes American immigration officials much less likely to doubt the intention of a Chinese student to return home and seek employment in a stronger economy.

That factor definitely works in the Chinese applicants favor, says Mr. Cuccia. But the major factor with F-1s is getting into a school thats authorized to propose the visa. He is referring to the fact that in order to even apply for F-1 status, any foreign student must be pre-accepted to a school that has filed paperwork that allows it to sponsor students through use of an I-20 form, a piece of paperwork that is required to start up any F-1 application. From the Top 9 list of schools, only four (Collegiate, Horace Mann, Saint Anns, Ramaz) have F-1 sponsorship status, while the other five (Brearley, Chapin, Dalton, Rye Country Day, Trinity) do not have the ability to provide F-1 status to foreign students But for wealthy parents that have their hearts set on schools that cannot provide F-1 visas, there is another way to acquire legal immigration for their school-age child, the EB-5 visa. The EB-5 visa is a green card document that gives two years of conditional residency permission to foreigners and their families, provided that they make a substantial investment in American business. And according to Mr. Cuccia there are two ways to obtain one an EB-5 visa: the more traditional manner in which one can obtain an EB-5 visa is by using a legally mandated minimum of $1 million (U.S.) to either invest in an American business or start one of their own. That business must have at least 10 full-time employees on staff on a permanent basis and the company must demonstrate that the entirety of the foreign investment must be at risk and not just accruing interest in American banks. However, with this type of EB-5, the investor must show where the money they are investing came from, warns Mr. Cuccia. And that can be an issue for a lot of people, especially Chinese investors that are operating their own business here. Which is why he also explains the second process for obtaining an EB-5, in which only $500,000 (U.S.) invested in a regional center, which I.C.E. defines as any economic unit, public or private, which is involved with the promotion of economic growth within American communities. That money must remain in the investment for the duration of the EB-5 and paperwork must also be filed proving the origin of the money invested, but according to some observers of New Yorks economic landscape, finding a regional center should get increasingly easier. We will start seeing major Chinese development companies undertaking massive projects in the very near future, says Michael Chen, an Asian market specialist at BOND, a New York-based real estate firm. I wouldnt be surprised if we saw another Battery Park City within the city or New Jersey in the new future, and I would be amazed if major chunks of the money to do it didnt come from Chinese investors.

TK Asian Antiquities employs a cutting edge laboratory and a highly regarded archaeometallurgist on its premises and works closely with the worlds leading scientists in the field of archaeometrics to authenticate practically every piece it sells. TKs methods of artifact study and testing have even been referenced by scientists at Oxford University and other leading academic institutions. TK also has a highly experienced sta of restorers and conservators who know the true condition of any artifact they handle, whether bronze, precious metal, textile, lacquer, wood or pottery. Unlike most buyers of Asian antiquities, TKs customers know they are acquiring an artifact that has received the most rigorous and accurate authentication possible. Michael C. Teller IV founded TK Asian 38 years ago in Williamsburg, Virginia, after having lived in Japan, Turkey, Uruguay, Germany, Holland and Indonesia. Since that time, TK has established a reputation for protecting attention that Mr. Teller paid to his select number of sources, TK Asian has achieved a very elite clientele, including descendents of emperors, and major museum collections. Now TK Asian is advertising its collections globally for the first time. Ancient Asian antiquities that have been used by emperors, and works of art that serious collectors enjoyed in the past, today can be acquired (with confidence) by anyone with a passion for beautiful treasures that are as unique and individual as the collectors themselves.

ROCK SOLID INVESTMENTS IN ART

TK Asian Antiquities has been something of a well-kept secret among buyers of treasured artifacts for many years. This elite group of collectors from museum buyers to royalty recognizes TK as a familiar name, knowing that it manages an incredible collection of beautifully preserved Asian art and artifacts. TK is known for its inspiring selection of ancient treasures and unique, contemporary Asian art. The sheer magnitude and variety of TKs collection is a shock to even savvy collectors. Most of the inventory at any given time is of royal origin. A look inside their collections, a peek behind the curtains, inspires reactions of awe and wonder. Today, despite the companys traditionally low profile, TK has quietly become a premier authority on the most important aspects of the Asian art and antiques profession. Important Chinese and unique Central Asian art are TKs primary fields of interest. The company maintains collections that date from the 5th century BCE (Before Common Era) to 1000 CE (Common Era), although its full collection extends beyond these dates. Additionally, TK has one of the largest Asian antique furniture collections in the Western world. TK is the world leader in a recently rediscovered and rare Chinese art form called Dreamstones. The stones present unbelievable atmospheric eects and emotionally evocative renderings of many subjects all found naturally in the stone. Dreamstones have been documented as far back as the Tang Dynasty (618 906 CE). The Emperor of the classical Song Dynasty (906 1279 CE) demanded the stones as a tribute in lieu of gold and precious gems. Xu Xiake, one of Chinas most famous Ming Dynasty scholars, once wrote that after seeing Dali Dreamstones, he felt that Chinas other art galleries should all be closed. This lost art form, that is now being revealed by the contemporary Masters, is primarily preserved in the mountains by people of the Bai nationality, and by Michael C. Teller IV, owner of TK Asian Antiquities. Mr. Teller is also chairman of the International Dali Dreamstone Association (I.D.D.A.) which ocially grades the quality of each stone.
