Is Mark Zuckerberg Teaming Up with Politico to Give Obama an Edge?

by Jeffrey Scott Shapiro Facebook may give Barack Obama a slight edge this coming presidential election while creating a wide misperception about whos actually pulling ahead in the Republican Party. A new partnership between Facebook and Politico announced last week will reveal users private messages if and when they relate to their feelings about a political candidate. Liz Gannes of All Things D enlightens us about the new dual effort, reporting that: It will consist of sentiment analysis reports and voting-age user surveys, accompanied by stories by Politico reporters. Most notably, the Facebook-Politico data set will include Facebook users private status messages and comments. While that may alarm some people, Facebook and Politico say the entire process is automated and no Facebook employees read the posts. Rather, every post and comment both public and private by a U.S. user that mentions a presidential candidates name will be fed through a sentiment analysis tool that spits out anonymized measures of the general U.S. Facebook population. Apparently, the fact that no Facebook employees read the posts is supposed to assure us that the quotes are not being hand picked to prefer one candidate over another. After all, since the posts will be published worldwide it cant possibly be referring to privacy (plus, the quotes are anonymized so they cant be attributed to any particular Facebook user). But heres the thing. Whether or not the quotes are actually being hand picked or being fed through a sentiment analysis tool (whatever that means) isnt really that relevant because we all know that more young people than old use Facebook. That means that in all likelihood those candidates that appeal to younger voters (namely Barack Obamasurprise, surprise, Mark Zuckerbergs apparent favorite) will be getting lots of play on the pages of Politico as the national favorite.

And heres something else: Dont be surprised if the Republican Partys quirkiest candidate, Ron Paul, also comes out the GOP front runner. After all, its no secret that Pauls young followers have been passionate about vocalizing their support perhaps hoping to convince Americans that Paul really is the front runner. The end game here is that there may be a perception that Obama is ahead in the general election and Ron Paul is ahead in the Republican Party, which (lets face it) may send any number of undecided voters back over to Obama. The results passed along from Facebook to Politico may be accurate in terms of whats being posted on Facebook, but they are not indicative of what views are held by the majority of mainstream Americans.

Has not Mr Zuckenburg earned quiet a bit of money from his creation of Face Book, but since he is behind the pres he is not part of the 1%. Very revealing that they are targeting the young to help push their re election efforts. The very people who are fresh out of the indoctrination camps that we call the public school system.

Are you kidding? You think politico needs any encouragement to go "pro-bama?" They're in the tank already. And, they have become one of only a very select few websites I absolutely refuse to visit.

The media game being played by BO is a real threat because most people refuse to be informed. I support paul supporters, the people, because they are fighting for freedom, I do not support paul by law and by choice because he is a republican. I predict paul will not be given a chance by the republicans because they are socialist. Government picking winners and losers is my definition of real socialism not ideal socialism. Corruption and the thirst for power is the enemy of all forms of government and a killer of freedom. To BO or not to BO that is the question? That is up to republicans and if they pick a magical conservative then they re elect BO. Don't worry I will not be voting for BO or any magical conservative, to me they are one and the same.

I refuse to play a choice between evils and that is the choice both socialist parties offer.

Face book needs to show these "young" people their future, what their paycheck will look like after Comrade's enormous debt filters down to them in the years to come. They can at least take solace in the fact that they will be eligible for food stamps.

Missy8s 116p 1 day ago Of course Zuckerberg is doing this, he's tring to save his own neck from the guillotines the left have promised to bring back.

It's what venture socialists always do, they join the "political socialists" in "eliminating" the competition in hopes of becoming a part of the central conglomerate that socialist states alway create. Of course their number one motivation is to survive the bloodbath of the tyrannical left itself.

As opposed to the Big sites, National Review, the Weekly Standard, Frontpagemag.com, MSNBC, NBC, CBS, ABC, 75% of Fox and the New York Times that are pushing Romney as the only one that can beat Obama? Sites tend to represent the views of those who use the sites. The Facebook stuff probably does reflect the views of those using Facebook. Polls do show that among young people the two candidates with the most enthusiastic support are Ron Paul and Barack Obama with Paul's popularity rising. If this is the case then the answer is not to attack Facebook, but make a better case for Romney, Gingrich, Santorum or Perry.

I'm an old guy but, for profession related reasons I have to have a Facebook account (otherwise, I wouldn't bother). From now on, all my posts will begin with, "Barak Hussien Obama is a communist sympathizer who should be removed from office and tried for treason!" Perhaps we should all open accounts and do the same thing? Just suggestin'.

OK, so is this media fodder an attempt to push people away from Facebook (privacy concerns) or to draw them to it (add to the conservative ranks speaking up to be recorded and shared)? Both? This is marketing, plain and simple, I am just left to wonder which direction the goal of it is. Ahhh, playing both ends against the middle, eh? Imagine that. And folks wonder why I have steered clear of FaceBook altogether. The costs of the "free" service is just too much for me to stomach.
