The most essential quality a person can have while coming in contact with another person is respect, and dignity. In the novels To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Animal Farm by George Orwell characters such as Atticus, Boxer, Napoleon and Squealer have influenced other characters by how much respect and dignity they show towards them. The characters in these novels receive a much more meaningful message when they are treated with respect and dignity. The amount of respect and dignity shown towards others by a leader determines how influential they can be. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus is a major influence on his children: Jem and Scout, because he treats them with respect and dignity. When Atticus talks to his children he allows them to be comfortable and foresee the bad things in life. By doing this Atticus allows them to filter his information better and allows them to relate to real life, Dont worry about anything Lee 134. This quotation from Atticus shows that he respects his children in a difficult time by comforting them. In the novel Animal Farm, Squealer is a major influence on the animals because Squealer shows respect and dignity to the animals and is successful at delivering his message across. Squealer communicates to the Animals of Animal Farm with a cheery and merry voice and
expression. Squealer however is not sincere, he takes advantage of the animals by showing respect and dignity but does not actually mean it, he is just doing it to benefit himself and Napoleon. Napoleon seemed to oppose the windmill, simply as a manoeuvre to get rid of snowball.....Tactics, comrades, Tactics! Skipping round and whisking his tail with a merry laugh, Orwell 71 72. This quotation from Squealer reveals that he is showing respect and dignity to them by creating a cheerful mood. When he is doing this he is betraying that it was Napoleons idea to build the windmill and was not Snowballs. Most of the animals believe that what Squealer says is true because he talks to them in a cheerful mood. Squealer showing respect by creating a cheerful mood allows him to deliver a clear message to the animals. Atticus and Squealer are both successful at being influential over others by showing respect and dignity. Atticus shows respect by comforting his children; likewise Squealer shows respect by creating a cheery mood. However, Atticus shows respect and dignity to his children because he wants them to use his message in further situations. On the other hand Squealer shows respect and dignity to the animals because he wants to deliver a message in which allows him to gain control and power, this reveals that he is not sincere to the animals. In conclusion both Atticus and Squealer show respect and dignity and are influential on others. In the novel To kill a Mockingbird, Atticus is a major influence on Maycomb society, the reason for this is because he delivers his message with respect and dignity. When Atticus talks to the court room at Tom Robinsons case, he talks to them with a calm, cool and collective voice and expression, revealing that he is showing respect and dignity towards them and not being rude. When he talks to the court room he makes them question whether Tom Robinson is guilty or innocent. Atticus paused, then he did something he did not ordinary do. He unhitched his watch and chain and placed them on the table Lee 202. This quote from the novel reveals that
he is talking to the court room as if they were his children, showing that he respects the court room like he respects his kids. When Atticus does this it makes the jury think hard about what Atticus is saying, which is Tom Robinson is not guilty. When Atticus is in the court room he also shows respect by asking for the courts permission to speak, With the courts permission Lee 202. This quotation from Atticus reveals that he cares about the courts rules; this shows the jury that Atticus respects the court and what he is saying about Tom Robinson is more likely the truth rather than a lie. In conclusion Atticus showing respects and dignity by talking to them as if they were his children and asking for the courts permission to speak is influential on the jurys thoughts about Tom Robinson. In the novel Animal Farm Boxer shows respect and dignity to the animals by not what he says but what he does, by him doing this he is a major influence on all the animals. Boxer shows respect and dignity to the animals by being the hardest worker he can be. By him doing this it makes the other animal respect what Boxer does for animal farm. Boxers strength and his never-failing cry of I will work harder! Orwell 85. This quotation from the novel reveals that Boxer always works his hardest no matter what the situation. It also reveals that the animals respect him because they comment on his strength and his will to never back down. In conclusion Boxer is influential on the other characters thoughts about him because he shows respect and dignity towards them. Atticus and Boxer are both successful at being influential over others by showing respect. Atticus shows respect and dignity by talking to the court room in a relaxed voice and expression and he also shows respect and dignity by asking for the courts permission to speak. This makes him influential on the jurys thoughts about Tom Robinson. Atticus does this to benefit his client; Tom Robinson. Likewise Boxer shows respect and dignity by always working his hardest no
matter what the situation is. This makes the animals thoughts about him different than they would be if he did not always work his hardest. Boxer does this to benefit him and animal farm. In conclusion both characters show respect and dignity and are influential on other character in the novels. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus shows respect and dignity to the black community and is influential on them. Atticus shows respect and dignity to the black community by defending Tom Robinson, even though Maycomb society does not agree with his decision to defend Tom Robinson, to the best of his ability, Atticus, you nigger-lovin bastard Lee 217. This quotation from Bob Ewell shows how much they dont appreciate him defending Tom Robinson. On the other hand the black society of Maycomb appreciates the amount of respect and dignity Atticus has given to defending Tom, (As Atticus left), the Negroes sat and stood around us with biblical patience Lee 209. This quotation from the novel reveals that because Atticus has shown respect towards the black community they have given the same thing back towards him. Atticus message when defending Tom Robinson is that everybody should be treated fairly in court no matter what race. The black community appreciates Atticus message and show that they respect Atticus by treating him like he is their best friend and a person with high standards. It also shows that they respect him because they do not do this to anybody else that leaves the court room. In conclusion Atticus gives respect and dignity to the black community of Maycomb and receives it back, even though he is shunned upon for doing so. In the novel Animal Farm, Napoleon is a major influence on the animals thoughts about him as a leader. The reason why he is so influential on their thoughts about him is because he seems to treat them with respect and dignity in some situations. When the animals ask Napoleon what happened to Boxer his response is, (Boxer died), it had not been possible to bring back his
lamented comrades remains for interment on the farm, but Napoleon had ordered a large wreath to be made from the laurels in the farmhouse garden and sent down to be placed next to Boxers grave Orwell 126. This quotation from Napoleon makes the animals believe that he had nothing to do with Boxers death because he wants to commemorate Boxers life, even though he does not care at all about Boxer. In conclusion Napoleon showing respect and dignity to Boxers life is influential on the animals thoughts on whether Napoleon sold him to the horse slaughter or not. Napoleon and Atticus are both successful at being influential over others by showing respect and dignity towards them. Atticus shows respect by going against society and being a lawyer for a black man. However, Atticus does this to send a positive message across which is, every man should be treated equally no matter what their race is. On the other hand Napoleon shows respect and dignity by commemorating Boxers life. However, Napoleon does not care about Boxer at all; all he cares about is that he does not get caught for selling Boxer to the horse slaughter house, thus making Napoleon not sincere like Atticus. In conclusion both Atticus and Napoleon are successful at being influential over others because they treat them with respect and dignity. In the novel To kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell, characters such as Napoleon, Atticus, Boxer and Squealer are influential over others because they treat others with respect and dignity. Those who show respect and dignity towards others are more likely to be influential then others who do not show respect and dignity. So, remember the next time you want to make a difference respect and dignity are the keys to achieving that goal.
