Chapter 9
Static- showing little or no change (stationary) / social life bond by traditions Buffet- violent shock, concussion/ to strike with hand Corpulent- large or bulky of body (stout and fat) Sauntered- walk lessenly (stroll) Cascading- waterfall descending over steep (fall in a cascade)

Chapter 12
Vegetation- all the plants of a place Acrid- sharp or biting to the taste of smell Cordon- a line guarding an area/ ribbon worn across breast as a badge Elephantine- huge clumsy movements like elephant Epaulettes- ornamental shoulder piece worn on uniforms of military officers.

Chapter 10
Authority- power to determine/right Ambushed- attacking unexpectedly Compelled- to overpower/force

Characterization
Jack: Piggy: Ralph: Roger: Represents largest savage Destructive mentality Not easily understandable-unsure of reasoning Represented as a leader that acts according to rules Obsessed with enforcing rules Represents ego: compensate with Jack and Piggy Piggy s death: confuses him and causes him to be in a frenzy Short, fat, clumsy (his intellectual ideas were ignored) Represents law and order of Adult world Glasses: wisdom , foresight with glasses predict future, without it he can only see what is near him Superego: act according to law, not dare to disobey recognize to be the chief and leader of the savages Opposed to Ralph and Piggy Supports belief that one s desire is more important than reason and moral

Sam&Eric: Simon: Believed to be messenger of God (Relate to Gangs of L.A.) Natural powers able to think- communicate with Lord of the Flies Cannot express his ideas to group Thinker of group of boys Makes connections Twins become one person Oppressed by Roger Join dark side when cannot compensate with good side

Chapter 5 (Beast from Water) Littluns (beast)


Percival has nightmares Says the beast comes out from the sea All littluns feel the beast around them

Sam n Eric describe the beast


Furry, teeth, claws Nearly touched them- followed them Its head moved

Ralph
Losing control Talks of things that don t work Lays down rules Feels he has control

Ralph calls assembly(decided hunters search beast)


Jack wants to proceed with hunt for beast Ralph mention rescue fire more important Piggy stay behind to look after littlun Jack says that decision making should be for those that are capable(conch unnecessary)

Jack Gaining Power


Makes fun of the littluns Breaks the conch rule Disobeys Ralph Asys he can destroy the beast His language turns hateful

Search for the beast


Ralph and jack takes party of boys to new part of island Jack- cool place to build fort Ralph- rotten place Simon- thinks no beast with claws and teeth (imagine as heroic and sick (dead fighters)

Piggy sees the end of democracy


Talks of an orderly world of grownups Realizes that democracy is falling apart Fears for his life if Ralph is not leader

Mutinous Boys
Boys who want to stay in this place and build a fort Ralph feels there is no food or shelter here There is disagreement

Chapter 7 (shadows and tall trees) Chapter 6 (beast from air) Air battle in the night sky As the air battle rages on in sky, one plane seems to explodes and sends down a sign from the sky Parachute with its dead occupant is guided by the wind onto the island Body settles itself on the mountain top. The tangle of strings of the parachute makes the body move every now and then

Ralph and boys proceed on with the search for the beast on other side of island
Along the way, Ralph wonders about way he looks Dirty hair, teeth (clothes need washing) Looks around- sees same in others Finds out he was biting nail (is he worried?) Looks out into sea and imagine how helpless things are

Sam n Eric being their early morning fire duty


Duty to light fire, behave as twins- 1 person Catch sight of parachute, hear it make noise in wind

Simon whispers into Ralph s ear Simons tells Ralph that he will make it back home

Ralph wonders how Simon can see into the future Ralph seems to believe Simon

Ralph day dreams about his life back in England Remember happy with mum and dad Since Ralph doesn t live with mum (imagine eating cornflakes feeding ponies, reading books) Reminds that Ralph is young boy who misses childhood

Wants to remove Ralph from power Ralph worries not being able to light the fire on mountain and insults hunters Others refuse to vote him out (silent) Jack leaves and claims those who like can follow him im not going to play anymore with you (runs away crying)

Ralph doesn t know what to do Piggy is happy Jack is gone Simon suggest find the beast on the mountain ( face the beast, face the fear) Peggy says build new signal fire (bathing pool) Set to work but many go to jack ( Maurice, roger, bill, hunters gone)

The hunt for the beast turns into a pig hunt Boys find boar and Ralph throws his spear Able to injure the boar, which escapes Ralph is exhilarated and excited The excitement catches onto other boys and hunt turns into a game Roger used as pretend pig and the boys jab spears at him Even Ralph forgets his position as chief and plays the game

Jack declares himself chief with others (forget beast) Wants hung pig and have feast and offer sacrifice to beast ( uncivilized, barbaric, savage) Kill a pig and they leave head as tribute to the beast and run away Roger very cruel to sow ( stick up anus) Almost like a rape No fire to cook pig

Ralph, Jack, Roger, continues search beast at night Simon runs down to where the littluns and piggy are since it is getting dark Rest of group decide not to follow Ralph, jack roger The 3 boys continue searching in the area where the mountain had begun Both Ralph and jack continuously dare each other to go further ( jack goes ahead and sees something that looks like the beast and rushes back) Together they discover something that looks like a great ape they also notice the ruin of a face

When piggy and Ralph discuss, jack, roger, Maurice comes Steals their burning sticks and welcomes others to the pig feast

Simon in the jungle sees the head on a stake with lots of flies head sees to come to life and they talk he will never escape ( beast is in all of them) Simon faints

Chapter 8 (Gift for the Darkness)


Jack takes conch blows and calls assembly 3 boys come back and says there is beast and states Ralph is a coward

Hallucination Lord talks to Simon saying that it has finally taken control of island and intends to have fun Tell Simon that it may kill him

All boys want join Jack s tribe, but Ralph warn no shelter and already pouring rain Jack, in order to take everyone s mind of shelter, asks them to dance

A dance of Piggy and Simon s murder Boys form circles and begin to chant Roger pretends to be pig, then a hunter All boys in trance as they dance Simon arrives to tell them of dead parachutist, but they still think he is the beast Kill Simon, body falls over cliff As tide comes in, Simon s body swept into ocean

Chapter 9
Simon discovers dead parachutist Simon discovers Beast is none other than dead parachutist Notices body is decaying Feels sick and vomit, feels sorry for dead man Frees body from angles of parachute lines and decides to tell other boys of truths

Chapter 10
Ralph and Piggy talk about Simons death Ralph realizes what happened the night before (feels guilty) Tells Piggy Simon was murdered Both try to clear their guilty feelings by saying Simon should not come out like that Piggy calls it an accident (that they were not part of circle) Join sam and eric and talk of lighting the fire

Piggy and Ralph on beach By water, Ralph teases Piggy and squirts water at him Piggy reaction get mad at Ralph- change in Piggy Maybe Piggy more braver now that Jack gone, feel Ralph not a strong leader anymore Also notice littluns gone to Jack s group. Decide to follow to make sure nothing happens

Roger enters Castle Rock Roger comes to Castle Rock and Robert shows him how fort is defended Large log that could glide down is used as defence Roger thinks of the power he has to do harm Jack tied Wilfred down and will beat him to show power

Jack s Party Jack sitting like idol painted face Piles of meat and fruit around them First greeted silence, make fun of Piggy, become cheerful Jack command others who is going to join my tribe?

Ralph and Jack and who should be chief Jack says he is provider of meat Ralph says he has conch (but not with him) Jack says conch does not count on this part of island

Jack the Chief Jack is naked to waist and painted white and red

Worries about others entering the fort and spoiling things He controls others by putting the fear of the beast in them. Says beast was disguised and may come again Wants to hunt and have feast When told he has no fire, tells group he will set it Maurice and Roger agree to help him get it from Ralph s place (glasses)

Jack appears from forest and tells Ralph to go back to his end of the island

Ralph and Jack go at each other Ralph tells jack that he wanted Piggy s glasses back and that he was chief Jack is mad and they fight Piggy reminds Ralph they were to get the specs Jack orders his hunters to grab Sam and Eric Ralph gets angry and fights again

Jack, Roger, Maurice come at night Jack scares Piggy by pretending to be beast Fight breaks out between boys Eric actually fighting Ralph who thinks is fighting with Jack and group Piggy and boys thought they want conch but Jack able to steal glasses and fire in hands of jack and hunters

Piggy has something to say That they were all acting like kids which is better- to have rules and agree or to hunt and kill Roger releases lever and huge boulders fall Conch breaks and Piggy is struck (falls 40ft and lands on rock below dead) Body washed into sea Ralph shocked, Jack threatens further (says he is chief and throws spear at Ralph) Everyone follows and Ralph runs into forest Jack ask Sam and Eric why they hadn t joined Roger acts if he has greater authority than Jack. Jack tells Roger to go back to his post

Chapter 11
Ralph and Piggy Sam, Eric plan next move Piggy ask Ralph to blow conch and call assembly (says its his right to get glasses back) They would ve given Jack the fire if he asked Ralph says they should look neat when they go to Jacks because they are not savages Piggy says he won t spears but others could Piggy hopes to convince Jack using rational talk (says what more can Jack do more than this Sam and Eric want to paint their faces because Jack will be and he will be violent (Ralph refuses) -

Chapter 12
Ralph hides and ponders the next move Hides near Castle Rock and observes. Notices Robert guarding the place Realizes that piggy and Simon were dead, and the painted hunters and Jack would never let him alone Comes across the grinning skull of the pig. Ralph is filled with anger and fear. Lashes out and knocks it to the group (still grinning) Decides to go to Jack s place. Maybe in the day light they may behave differently

They approach Castle Rock Piggy without glasses feels unsafe Roger s voice greet them and Ralph blows conch Roger seems to be in charge of the place and Jack gone hunting

Ralph goes to Castle Rock AS he nears castle rock, he hears the familiar chanting kill the beast, cut his throat. Spill his blood. Notices sam and eric guarding the place and talks to them. They tell him that Jack had hurt them. They tell Ralph that Jack and Roger hate him and are going to hunt him down. Ralph says that he wanted to be friends

The officer says that a pack of British boys should have behaved better Compares the events to coral island Ralph realizes what he has gone through and begins to weep Ralph remembers Piggy as the true wise friend

Sam and Eric describe how Ralph would be hunted by Jack Ralph asks what they would do to him if they capture him The twins tell them to keep away as far as possible. Jack and Roger are terrors The hunters were going to spread out in a line across the island. They would signal by making an ululation sound. Then they him that Roger had sharpened a stick at both ends. This may mean that they intended to cut his head off and offer it to the beast

Jack and the Gang hunt Ralph They releases a huge boulder into the thicket where Ralph is hiding They throws spears into the thicket but Ralph fights back He manages to escape but realizes that they are onto him They decide to smoke him out and light a huge fire that spreads across the island Ralph runs but is too tired and falls onto the sand

Rescued by Naval Officer Meets a naval officer who asks Ralph and the surrounding hunters fun and games? He says that they stopped here because they saw smoke Ralph tells him that 2 boys were killed
