AFTERNOON PANELISTS KAREN SWINTON

Karen Stewart-Swinton, teacher, educator, motivational speaker and servant has been working in the arena of public service for 17 years. Her professional career began in 1994 when she was hired as a clerical assistant for an at-risk program in Pulaski County. However, within four years of being hired, she quickly moved up the ranks from being hired as a temporary employee to Program Development Manager, where she supervised a staff of ten and served as overseer of 16 after-school tutorial programs within Pulaski County. Looking back on that experience, the most important task at hand for her was making sure the youth in the program knew the importance of education and goal setting, and not giving up on their dreams. After leaving the county in 2000, she began her life-long career as she took a part-time position as health educator/facilitator at Planned Parenthood of Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma. In that position, she worked with women teaching them self-empowerment and educating them on the transmission and prevention of sexually transmitted infections and HIV. During her reign as educator, she explored the statistics, epidemiology, myths and the true facts associated with HIV and how people in this world are being infected and affected by the whole phenomenon. In January 2001, she took a full-time job working at an Independent Living Resource Center, which serves people with disabilities, teaching them the importance of focusing on their abilities and not their limitations. In 2003, because of her life-long desire to continue sexual health education, she left Mainstream to become a Sexual Health Educator for Planned Parenthood, working with youth, again, on making positive life choices as it relates to sexual health. The ideology is that our teens today, need us as a community to start having those uncomfortable conversations about sexual education and relationships, incorporated with family morals and values. Making the right decision is more than just saying no! It is a feeling of self-worth and self-value that makes our young people say YES to endless possibilities. We often say our children are the future, but we must realize we are our childrens future, because what we do or dont do can affect them for the rest of their lives. Being the project director for this program puts her in the drivers seat to make sure change can and is being instituted. Throughout her job experiences, she has worked hard to promote education, self-esteem, self empowerment and goal setting to individuals in vulnerable situations. Her care and compassion for working with young people have led her to pursue this ministry of education to make the lives better for our teens and for the future of our country. Karen Swinton has a degree in Biological Sciences from Arkansas State University. She and her husband Darryl have two children.

GENINE L. PEREZ
Genine L. Perez - Arkansas Youth Leadership Initiative Program Coordinator. Genine has served in the position since August 2003. She is a graduate of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock where she received her B.A. in Liberal Arts and a M.A. in Professional and Technical Writing. She has worked in tobacco control since 2002. She has conducted numerous workshops and spoken at many youth oriented events. Ms. Perez is the coordinator of the Tobacco Control Youth Board (TCYB), which is the statewide youth board. The goal of the youth board is to reduce tobacco consumption amongst the youth of Arkansas and to promote healthy choices.

Tiffany was inducted into the Iota Delta Chapter in April of 2009 and currently serves as chapter President. She actively participates in various volunteer activities and programs where she willing gives her time back to the community. Because of her efforts, she was recognized as Student of the Year in 2010 by the Arkadelphia Chamber of Commerce and was recognized as a member of Whos Who among Henderson Students in 2011. Tiffany enjoys public speaking and event planning. She is most proud of a HIV/AIDS Awareness banquet and testing event that she organized to take place during the month of February 2011 on the schools campus. Her future plans are to attend the University of Central Arkansas to obtain her Masters Degree in Business Administration and to pursue a career in Athletic Marketing and Sales with the Dallas Cowboys. Tiffany owes everything that she is to her wonderful mother and supportive family, but most importantly recognizes that without God, nothing is possible. She always remembers this special scripture Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Colossians 3:23-24.
