1.0 Introduction
The solar panels are associated with the Power subsystem because the solar cells
mounted on these panels will convert sunlight into electricity and help power HokieSat.
Each solar panel will contain an array of solar cells that is made up of several soldered
strings. At the end and in between of each string will be wires that lead either to another
string or the inside of the satellite. All eight solar panels (six sides, one top, one bottom)
were designed individually to accommodate the uniqueness of each surface. This
included maximizing the number of solar cells on each surface and at the same time
avoiding other physical features.

1.1 Solar Cell

The solar cells used on HokieSat are GaInP2/GaAs/Ge high efficiency (22.6%)
cascade solar cells by TECSTAR. The approximate mass of each cell is 3.07 grams.
Figure 1.1.2 shows specifications of each cell1. Figure 1.1.1 shows a dimensioned
drawing of the cell, and figure 1.1.3 shows a 3-D picture of an individual cell1.

Each solar cell is a combination of the cell, a cover glass over the cell, interconnects, and
end terminations.

1.2 Solar Cell String

Panels 16 have two strings of 12 solar cells, and the top panel has one string of 12
solar cells. A string is connected in series by either soldering the cells together or
soldering a wire (22 gauge) between two cells. More detail is discussed in the assembly
procedure.

1.3 Solar Cell Panel 1

Solar Panel 1 is shown in figure 1.3.1. Dimensions of the location of the different
strings are also shown. Primary concerns when designing this panel were working
around the irregular top side, placing around the patch antenna, placing around the
external connector, and spacing the cells for optimum distance between cells.

Solar Panel 2 is shown in figure 1.4.1. Dimensions of the location of the different
strings are also shown. The primary concerns when designing this panel were working
around the camera hole and spacing the cells for optimum distance between cells.

1.8 Solar Cell Zenith Panel

The zenith solar panel is shown in figure 1.9.1. Not many dimensions were needed
for this panel. It had been decided that three sections of four cells would be placed where
it was most convenient. The primary concern when designing this side was finding the
ideal distance between cells.
