Classification and Mechanism of Action


Antiasthmatic & COPD Preparations / Antihistamines & Antiallergics Montelukast is a selective leukotriene receptor antagonist that blocks the effects of cysteinyl leukotrienes in the airways.

Indication and Contraindication


Indication: Asthma, Allergic rhinitis Contraindication: Hypersensitivity to drug and its component.

Side Effects or Adverse Reaction


Dizziness, fatigue, fever; rash; abdominal pain, dyspepsia, dental pain, gastroenteritis; increased AST; weakness; cough, nasal congestion. Aggression, agitation, angioedema, arthralgia, bleeding tendency, bruising, cholestasis, diarrhoea, dream abnormalities, drowsiness, oedema, eosinophilia, hallucinations, hepatic eosinophilic infiltration (rare), hepatitis, hypersensitivity, hypoaesthesia, insomnia, irritability, muscle cramps, myalgia, nausea, palpitation, pancreatitis, paraesthesia, pruritus, restlessness, seizure, urticaria, vasculitis, vomiting.

Special Precaution

Nursing Responsibilities
1. Check physicians order. 2. Observe the rights in giving medication. 3. Report any untoward s/sx of allergic reaction.

Montelukast 10g/tab 1tab OD 8

Use cautiously with appropriate monitoring in patients whose dosage of systemic corticosteroids may be reduce gradually.
