Ladies First, a Vermont Department of Health program that provides access to breast, cervical and heart health screening for low income women, is expanding its eligibility beginning this year. Any Vermont woman age 21 or older earning 250 percent of the poverty level or less can now receive free screening services through Ladies First. For example, a woman in a two-person household earning less than $36,775 a year can qualify. The program has screened nearly 11,000 women for breast and cervical cancer since 1995, and 4,500 for heart health since 2002. Early detection can, and does, save lives, said Nicole Lukas, womens health director for the Vermont Department of Health. We want to be sure that all women receive timely treatment. Uninsured women with a breast or cervical cancer or pre-cancerous condition can be referred by Ladies First to a special Medicaid program, Vermonts Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Program, to receive full health insurance that covers the cost of their treatment. To qualify a woman needs to be uninsured, a U.S. citizen (or qualified alien), and under age 65. Benefits can be retroactive up to 90 days when the woman does not have any prior health insurance or coverage through VHAP (Vermont Health Access Program). To apply or for more information call 1-800-508-2222 or go to www.LadiesFirstVt.org. For Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals, please use Vermont Relay Service 711 and give our number: 1-800-508-2222. Foreign language interpreters, transportation, child care and elder care are also available.
Radon cannot be seen, tasted, or smelled, but more Vermonters than ever before can find out if it exists in their homes. The Vermont Department of Health distributed 1,700 free radon test kits to homeowners last year and has more than 3,000 free kits to give away this year. Radon is a naturally-occurring gas that results from the breakdown of uranium in the bedrock, and is the second leading cause of lung cancer (after smoking) in the United States. Radon causes lung cancer over a long period of time, and we know that about one in every eight Vermont homes has elevated levels of radon, said Lori Cragin, a Health Department epidemiologist. January is Radon Awareness Month. Because radon levels can change daily, weekly and seasonally, a long-term test of 3-12 months (ideally including a heating season) is the best way to accurately test for the gas. Radon can get into your home from the soil. A house can act like a large chimney, with warm air rising and escaping out upper floor windows and through cracks in the attic. This creates a vacuum at the lowest level of the house, which can pull the radon from the soil into the home. The likelihood of a radon problem cannot be predicted by the style, age, or location of a home. All homes are at risk. You cannot know the radon level in a house without testing for it. Testing is easy. Open the kit immediately and leave it in place throughout a heating season, and then mail it back to the Health Department to get your results. 61 Get a free kit by e-mailing radon@ahs.state.vt.us , or call 1-800- North Barre 4 439-8550. Mon-Thurs 9-6 Exposure to radon is preventable and fixable through proper Toll Fre venting techniques. If test results show high levels of radon in the 1-800-6 air, a mitigation system can be installed at a cost of approximately $800-$2,000. For more information about radon, radon testing and mitigation, CALL visit the Health Department website at healthvermont.gov. Vermonts Only

If you are 12 to 14 years old and want to learn about Vermonts wildlife and gain outdoor skills next summer, consider attending one of the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Departments Green Mountain Conservation Camps. The one-week camp program is held at two locations -- Lake Bomoseen in Castleton and Buck Lake in Woodbury. Campers participate in hands-on learning experiences about fish and wildlife conservation, ecology, forestry, orienteering, safe firearm and archery techniques, swimming canoeing, fishing and more in an attractive outdoor setting. Natural resource professionals come to the camp during the week to share information on their programs and take campers out for field activities. Conservation Camps open June 17 and continue until August 17. Tuition is $200 for the week, including food, lodging and equipment. Check the Vermont Fish and Wildlife website (www.vtfishandwildlife.com) for information about partial and full scholarship availability. Information about the program is under Education and Training on the left side of the home page. You can print the camp application from the website, fill it out, and send it in with a
check. For more information about Green Mountain Conservation Camps contact: fwgmcc@state.vt. us or call 802-241-3768. Vermonts conservation camp program is unique because it is sponsored and directed by Fish and Wildlife Department professionals -the same people who manage Vermonts fish and wildlife resources. Working biologists, foresters, game wardens and conservation educators teach young people about Vermonts forests, wetlands and wildlife. The programs greatest strength is connecting young people to the outdoors.

and physical skills. Through the program, children as young as five are exposed to the motor patterns associated with golf, along with the inherent values of the game. The collaborative partners and other grantors fund 75% of the one-time costs, with the schools responsible for 25%. Community support is integral to the program. The Vermont PGA teaching professionals will partner with the schools during physical education classes and offer information on a variety of instructional and real world golf opportunities for interested students and their families at their local golf clubs. Through this program, the physical education professionals, and the Vermont golf community, we have the terrific opportunity to positively affect the lives of more than 14,800 Vermont elementary children through the sport of golf. We strongly encourage every golf course in Vermont to welcome these future athletes, states Richard H. Mihlrad, Executive Director of the Vermont First Tee National School Program Initiative.

With winter here, officials with the Green Mountain and Finger Lakes National Forests are encouraging the public to be extremely mindful of their surroundings and to use good judgment prior to recreating on the 400,000 acre Green Mountain National Forest and 16,000 acre Finger Lakes National Forest. In order to minimize rescue efforts and injury to the public, Forest Service employees have recommended some safety tips for the public to consider as they plan their trips to the Forests.

Make sure that you are prepared before you leave: Clothes should be chosen for warmth, weight and wind-protection. Prepare to reach your destination by dark -- temperatures will often drop rapidly once the sun goes down. To adjust to the changing temperatures, dress in layers that are warm, lightweight and can be added or removed according to temperature. Tell a responsible person where you are going and when you plan to return. Travel with another person so that you have help in case of an emergency. Know the current weather forecast. If you are lost or your equipment has failed -- stay calm! If you are injured or know of another injured person, call 911. Decide on a plan of action. If you stay where you are with your equipment, it is easier for rescuers to find you. Try to build a fire and a shelter so that you can stay warm. Keep your group together, if possible. If it is necessary to go for help, it is best to send two people.
