Wreckers demolishing major Vila school

lease

in the Korman area on the Teouma Road has been purchased by a developer despite the school possessing a special lease and status of reserved for educational purposes. The school can accommodate approximately 350 students. Vila City College is being destroyed at a time when enrolments in 2010 increased by 8% over 2009 and a fur-

ther large increase is expected in last years figures when available. An additional increase is also expected again this year with the next intake. There has been great pressure on classroom space for several years. The school buildings were constructed to a high standard, and a number of people have been able to live in the buildings since the school was closed. Classes stopped because the former owner

could not complete financial obligations to his bank. Despite the reserved status, the premises have been sold and the lease goes to a commercial developer who appears to employ several Asian foreign investors in driving the bulldozers and removing the corrugated iron from the roofing of the 10 classrooms. They were unable to explain why the work is being undertaken.
