Universal Design

the Seven Principles of UNIVERSAL DESIGN

What IS U.D.?
The design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design.
-The Center for Universal Design

The intent of the U.D. is to simplity life for everyone by maing products, communications and the built environment more usable by as many people as posible at little or no extra cost. U.D. Should be so subtle that is supports the function requirement of a user, without the user being aware of any specific measure used to accommodate them.

THE 7 PRINCIPLES
Well conceived Universal Design is very stealthy and can be invisible. It is quite simply good and economical design in order to provide the freedom to live or Work at Home safely and independently. were collaboratively authored by a working group of architects, product designers, engineers and environmental design researchers as a guide for a wide range of design disciplines including environments, products and communications. These principles may be applied to evaluate existing designs, guide the design process and educate both designers and consumers about the characteristics of more usable products and environments.

Equitable Use
The design is useful and marketable to people with diverse abilities.

The Hug Chair

The Hug Chair is a modular, adjustable seating system that allows for children with physical challenges to sit comfortably in every day settings. Designers worked with a physically challenged student Garett, and with his help they created a a product that was convenient and provided adequate support. Once unable to sit with his friends due to the lack of appropriate seating, Garret now sits at the table and can be independent. It attaches to the picnic style benches found in most school cafeterias. Designed to facilitate inclusion in social settings, the chair is soft, playful and easy to keep clean. It is modular and adjustable enough to grow and meet the needs of any child user, and fit a variety of needs that were once unmet. Whether they are faced with living with physical challenges or not, this standing seat will provide with the support and comfort. The hugging arms are comforting and the arms and legs make it fun to use. It is is safe for children who need posture support, but its fun design make it useable for any child, but can be used as a booster seat. It has removable side panels and an adjustable seat, and can be taken anywhere. This product provides the same means for all users, and is appealing to all users, and provides security and safety.

Flexibility In Use
The design accommodates a wide rage of preferences and abilities

People with hand spasticity can enhance their computer access thanks to this new mouse. The self-customizing, ergonomic exterior comforts and supports the users hand and wrist depending on their spasticity condition. The operation of ReeMu does not require full or partial finger dexterity, and can work for either hand. This allow users with a variety of different physical limitations to comfortably use this product. Its intention is meant to improve the daily life that is closely connected to the use of computers, and can be used for those who dont face physical challenges.

Simple and Intuitive Use
Use of this design is easy to understand, regardless of the users experience, knowledge, language skils, or education level.

This design is aimed at persons with a physical disability. Due to dexterity limitations or mobile impairments, computer accessibility can become a serious issue. This system will replace the conventional keyboard and mouse interface, by using eyetracking data and a gaming glove instead. The glove and the eye tracking data are not complicated, and are as simple to use as just moving your hands! This is achieved by linking Eye-fixation coordinates directly to camera movements and character movements and interaction to hand gestures. As a result, the user's body will become the controller, but in a way that is much less strenuous than other bodycontrol type interfaces that can be found on modern gaming consoles like the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft's Kinect.

Perceptible Use
The design communicates necessary information effectively to the user, regardless of ambient conditions or the user's sensory abilities.

Current assistive technologies do not provide a means for a low-vision student to rapidly switch between seeing the front of the classroom (a farsight task) and writing their notes (a near-sight task). Using a human notetakers and classroom audio/video lecture recording systems, force the student to depend on others or classroom infrastructure, and do not provide students with the benefit of improved retention via the process of taking their own notes. The Note-Taker solves this problem with a studentdesign pan/tilt/zoom camera connected to a Tablet PC supporting pen and multi-touch input. This portable solution provides students with a splitscreen interface featuring live video and a digital notepad on which they can type or write their notes. Students can aim and zoom the camera with drag, tap, and pinch gestures on the Tablet display, and also record lectures for later review.

Tolerence For Error
Design minimizes hazards and the adverse consequences of accidental or unintended actions.
For those who suffer from things such as Parkinsons disease or any other physical impairment that causes one to shake, it is necessary to have a tool that will allow them not to cut themselves. This weighted razor is perfect for that. Pocket holds a disposable razor. A half inch wide strap fits comfortably over the hand. Thumb loop aids in adjusting strap. Weighted Cuff for Disposable Razor holder has hidden weights help to steady shaky hand. Hook and loop closure. This is an inclusive design that will help with the aging effects on motor functions, even those who do not have parkinsons can use this, making it something that is inclusive and desirable.

The design can be used efficiently and comfortably with a minimum of fatigue.
The tabs that are meant to be convenient on milk jugs or the pull tabs on aluminum pop cans, can cause major difficulties for those who suffer from degenerative circulation diseases that affect the fingers. For those who suffer from Raynards Phenomenon the onset of the disease begins with the hands losing circulation and loss of feeling into the fingers or toes, the skin turns pale or white the blood flow returns and the skin turns red. Raynards More often than not it will trigger the beginning of rheumatoid arthritis, and people with this disease have a hard time making a pinching movement. Though usually effective, this excludes the accessibility of those who suffer Raynards, and therefore it is not inclusive.

Low Physical Effort

Size and Approach for Use
Appropriate size and space is provided for approach, reach, manipulation, and use regardless of the users body size, posture, or mobility.

The standard type of shower or washing apparatus to be put in a home was often a shower with a tub bottom. While convenient in a way that you get two uses out of one, it is exclusive for those who are physically, mentally, or visually impaired. Even children or those without impairment are often found falling as they are unstable and climbing out of a slick surface. This is not a respectful to the principles of Universal Design, and can be replaced with newer versions that allow users to open and close a door to have a flush entranceThese new bathing ideas allow those who might not usually be able to, to regain a sense of privacy and to bathe themselves.
