St. Marys College Two for Two with ICSA Team National Championship Title
Annapolis, MD St. Marys College of Maryland has won their second Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) national championship in less than a week as competition for the ICSA/APS Team Race National Championship (May 7-9) wrapped up Tuesday at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. This is the fourth ICSA Team Race National Championship (1999, 000, and 004) won by St. Marys. Just four days ago, the Seahawks dominated racing to claim the ICSA Womens National Championship at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, before the action relocated to Annapolis where the US Naval Academy is hosting the final two events in college sailings spring tripleheader. The ICSA/Gill Coed National Championship will run May 0 June 1. Team Racing By The Numbers - Conference eliminations qualified 14 colleges, representing seven North American conferences, to compete for the ICSA/APS National Team Race Championship. The event pits each colleges three-boat team against anothers in a roundrobin series of matches. By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer For a high school athlete, making it to the state championship once in his or her respective sport is a tremendous accomplishment. Making it twice is a very rare accomplishment. And making it three times in three different

sports in one school year, well, thats almost unheard of. But Leonardtown High Schools Davi Clark, a three-sport athlete in soccer, swimming and track and field, achieved this amazing feat in just her second year as a Raider. What is even more impressive is that Clark won State Championships in two of those three appearances, in soccer and See Clark page B- swimming.

Four Runs in the Fourth Wins it for Indians

Unbeaten Streak Extends to 12 Games
By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer Mondays St. Marys County Babe Ruth League baseball matchup between the undefeated Indians and the second place Orioles was all decided in the fourth inning. In the top of the inning, the Orioles took a -0 lead on a leadoff homer by pitcher Alex Murphy. In the bottom of the inning, however, the Indians came from behind and took a 4- lead to win the game. The Os faced the top of the Indians lineup in the bottom of the fourth, and Indian center fielder Josh Carpenter led his team off with a single to right field. The next batter, shortstop Cody Jameson sent a two run shot over the center field fence to tie the game up at two. Josh got the single and then Cody got the home run, that got us going, said Indians Head Coach Tom Jameson. But the Indians werent done. Third baseman Cody Barnes kept the inning alive with an infield single and then stole second and third. Then, catcher Josh Burch bunted Barnes home to give the Indians a lead. Burch stole second and then rounded third on a bunt by Cullen Bonnel, putting the Indians up 4, a lead they would hang onto for the remainder of the game. I just figured, you know, steal a base here and there, get a couple bunts down, try to get one more run and we ended up getting two more, it worked out good, said Tom Jameson. When we got four runs in the fourth, that was big. With the win, the Indians improve to 1-0 on the season, while the Orioles go to 10-. The Indians knew they would have their hands full against the Orioles, according to Tom Jameson. I knew it was going to be close coming in, he said. Alex [Murphy] was on. Diamondbacks Squeeze Out a Win Over Mariners

By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer The Diamondbacks and Mariners battled back and forth for six long innings Tuesday night at Loral Grove with neither team able to take control until the very end. After taking a 15-11 lead in the top of the sixth, the Diamondbacks gave up three in the bottom of the inning, but made a throw from center field to home, tagging out a base runner and saving the game from going into extra innings. The Diamondbacks (7-5) escaped with a 15-14 win in a game that lasted almost two hours, 15 minutes. The Diamondbacks struck first, scoring four runs in the first inning. Sam Badea and Austin Gibbs each recorded singles, while Zack Sweitzer and Ray Snoots drove in RBIs. Both teams were scoreless in the second inning, and the Diamondbacks held on to their four run lead. In the top of the third, the DBacks added two runs on a double by Snoots down the left field line. The Mariners got on board for the first time in the bottom of the third inning, when Mike Mills was walked with the bases loaded. Patrick Capps later hit an infield single to drive in another run. Justin Aeschlimann then tied the game up with his single to the gap in center. Robert Bailey run-ruled (5 runs per inning limit) the Diamondbacks in the inning with his two-RBI triple that gave the Mariners a two run lead. See Diamondbacks page B-4

Indians reliever Cody Jameson came in during the fifth inning and didnt allow any hits. He also hit a two run shot in the fourth that tied the game up at two.

be ragging on LeBron. Game Two was almost a replay of Game One. The Cavs were down one and LeBron James controlled the ball at the top of the key. James must have been listening to the critics after Game One because this time, instead of dishing the ball off to a teammate, he attacked the basket and went for the game winner himself. LeBron was met in midair by defender Richard Hamilton as he heaved the ball at the hoop. The shot was off and landed into the hands of Larry Hughes, who tried one last desperation shot, which was off as well. Like in Game One, the Cavs ended up losing 79-76 and were now down 2-0 in the series. It looked like it was going to be a sweep. Despite what many considered a foul on Richard Hamilton in James attempt at the basket, the critics were on LeBrons case again. He needs to be able to create better opportunities for himself under that kind of pressure, they said, and they argued that the no-foul call was appropriate because games cant be decided by the refs in the last seconds. If it were LeBronsWorld, the ending would have been a bit different LeBron is a the top of the key dribbling the ball The Cavs are down one He drives Hamilton challenges LeBrons shot is no good but a foul call is made on the play James toes the free throw line the first shot is good!... and the second shot Swish The Cavs win Game Two and tie the series at one Again, LeBron did the right thing. His team was down one. If the shot goes in, theyre up one. If hes fouled, hes got a chance to tie it or win it. Had a foul been called and free throws made, Im pretty sure the critics wouldnt be ragging on LeBron. While Games Two was almost a carbon copy of Game One, the rest of the series was totally different. I guess LeBron was tired of hearing about his flaws. formance, beat Detroit 88-82. Cleveland tied the series up in Game Four with a 91-87 home win, backed by James 25 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. Game Five was when critics realized James meant business. He was fearless, scoring the last 25 points and 29 of the last 30 Cavalier points on his way to 49 total as they beat the Pistons 109-107 in double-overtime. Up 3-2 and with a chance to win the Eastern Conference Finals, LeBron shut the critics up for good. He had 20 points and 14 rebounds as the Cavs crushed the Pistons 9882, bringing Cleveland its first Eastern Conference Championship ever. Now the Cavs are closer than theyve ever been to an NBA Championship and the closest the city has been to a world championship since 1964. The critics dont think they have a chance against the San Antonio Spurs, but then again, they said the same thing about the Pistons series.

In the Knowl
LeBrons World
By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer LeBron James is a monster. There, I said it. Im not the biggest LeBron fan in the world, but where credit is due, credit must be given. After Game One of the Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Detroit Pistons Eastern Conference Finals, the critics were on his case. The Cavs were down 7976 and James was dribbling the ball at the top of the key. He drove into the key and just when everyone thought he was going to shoot it, he through a bullet pass to Donyell Marshall, who was wide open behind the three point line on the wing. Marshall took the wide-open shot but missed it, and the Pistons took game one. James took heat from the media for being afraid to take the big shots at the end of the game. He cant be a great player if he cant take and make the game winning shot in the big game, they said. Clark
Continued from page B-1 Clark, who has played varsity soccer since her freshman year, started her remarkable string of State Championship performances in the fall of 2006, when the Lady Raiders soccer team cruised to a 17-11 record. After a disappointing end to the 2005 season, in which Leonardtown was expected to contend for the State Title, the Raiders entered the 2006 playoffs with more confidence. They allowed only one goal in their entire post season run, defeating Thomas Stone, Chesapeake, Perry Hall and Meade on their way to the Finals at UMBC. In the State Championship, the Raiders went up against Quince Orchard High School of Montgomery County and it was Leonardtowns defensive efforts that made the win possible. Clark, who is an outside midfielder, is modest about her role on the team, but Quince Orchard struggled all night to even get the ball past midfield, while the Raiders created one opportunity after another. I wouldnt say we were the playmakers because thats what the center-mids did, but we would come back and help on defense and then

wed go up and play the whole outside lane, said Clark, 16 years old. Davi controlled the left flank for us this year, said Leonardtowns Head Coach Jennifer Henderson. She has a strong left foot and could deliver beautiful crosses for us into the box. She has great endurance and was extremely strong helping on defense and getting involved in the attack... She is a very unselfish player that takes pride in assisting her teammates to score goals. The Raiders finally scored after 77 minutes of play to win their first State Championship since 1998. Its kind of indescribable, said Clark. I cant really put it into words. It was the best feeling. The feeling wouldnt end there. After a long soccer season, Clark hung the cleats up (Well, not really. She also plays club soccer year-round for the CSA Alliance) and joined the swim team, whose season was already in progress. The transition was not too difficult for Clark, who has been an avid swimmer since age five. I was really focused on swimming when I was little, she said. Swimming was probably my main thing. I did it six days a week. The Leonardtown girls swim team had a spectacular

year, winning both SMAC and Regional Championships, and going the entire regular season without losing a meet. The Raiders qualified in several events at the first ever Maryland State Swim Meet, but it was in the 200-meldey relay, the first race of the day, that the Raiders were most successful. Leonardtown was led off by Caitlin Branaman and anchored by Brittany Culpepper. Clark swam the second leg of the relay and helped her team to gold as they edged second place Severna Park by .79 seconds. It was a lot of fun because Id been swimming with those girls since I was in second grade and it was really fun to come that far with them and have that experience, Clark said. After collecting her second gold medal in months, peoples started asking Clark how one experience compared to the other. I dont really know how to because its so different, she says. But both just give you a speechless feeling. Another transition was awaiting Clark after the swimming season -- this time to the track, where she specializes in the 800m run. Making the switch from one endurance sport to another was once again not all too hard for Clark. Running is in her genes.

Her mother, Merri Clark, runs on a regular basis and can be seen participating in local 5ks and even the Lower Potomac River Marathon, which she ran in March. Davis father, Bill Clark, is 65 and a great basketball player. Davi has always enjoyed being able to go out for a run with her mother or play a game of two-on-two with her parents and younger brother, Billy. The Leonardtown girls track team had a spectacular season, winning the SMAC Championship. Clark and her 4x800m relay team, which was also comprised of Katlyn Dillow, Lara Lewellyn (also on the soccer team), and Lindsay McCleaf qualified for the State Meet. Although the Lady Raiders didnt win the gold in that event, they had a great year, going 12-0 and nearly breaking the school record in the 3200m relay. Aside from winning State

Titles in one school year, Clark has also earned accolades such as Second Team All-County in soccer, First Team All-SMAC for swimming, and First Team AllSMAC in track. Between soccer, swimming and running, its hard to believe that Clark has any free time and it is hard to imagine how she balances her schoolwork and her sports. My dad is always saying schoolwork comes first and I always have to have everything done before I do something sports related, Clark said. This often means doing her homework in the car en route from school to a game, she added. When she has a chance, Clark just likes to relax and hang out with her friends, but if she had too much free time and no sports in her life, Clark says she would probably go crazy.

In order to keep from going crazy this summer, Clark will participate in soccer camps, conditioning camp, and do some running on the side in order to prepare for another Leonardtown soccer season. After high school, Clark wants to play sports at a small Division I College, but the questions remains, what sport will she chose? At this point, she says she is leaning towards playing soccer, but before having to make that decision, she has two more promising years of sports to play at Leonardtown. I dont know if I can top the two state champions thing, she said with a smile. I just have to try to become a better athlete.

Female professional athletes earn significantly less than do their male counterparts. In their 2003 collective bargaining agreement (CBA), the WNBA Players Association established parameters on minimum and maximum earnings for WNBA players. Under the guidelines of the agreement, a teams salary cap for 2005 was $673,000. Under the same agreement, players with 0 to 3 years of experience were guaranteed a minimum salary of $30,600 in 2004, while those with 4 or more years of experience earned no less than $43,700 and no more than $87,000 per season. In contrast, the highest paid player in the NBA, Miami Heat center Shaquille ONeal, earned $20,000,000 in 2005 and is one of 17 players across the league who earned more than $15,000,000 for the 2005 season. ONeal alone earns more in salary than the entire WNBA combined. Diamondbacks
Continued from page B- But the Diamondbacks returned the favor in the top of the fourth. PJ Boyle sparked a big inning with his two RBI double to left, which tied things up. The DBacks added three more before the inning was over to take the lead. In the bottom of the inning, the Mariners couldnt get things started at the plate, and the Diamondbacks lead was temporarily intact. But the Mariners stepped up defensively in the top of the fifth, allowing just one hit and zero runs. The Mariners crept their

way back into the game in the bottom of the fifth. Four batters were walked in a row, scoring one run. Later, Aeschlimann singled to short center, scoring another. With the bases loaded, Bailey knocked in two runs with a double to left field. After scoring five runs in the fifth, it was anybodys game. But after a strong sixth inning, the Diamondbacks built up enough of a lead to win the game. Jessie Garcia sparked the DBacks with a single to right center and then stole both second and third. The next batter, Alex Sanders, was walked, and then stole second. Later in the top of the sixth, with two outs, Boyle hit an RBI single, put-

ting runners at the corners. Badea and Gibbs each contributed RBI base hits before the inning was over to boost the Diamondbacks. With one last chance to come back in the bottom of the sixth, the Mariners made a valiant effort. Outfielder Thomas Gray created a scoring opportunity for the team when he was walked and then stole second. Joshua Hubert joined Gray on the base paths after being walked as well. Mark Hardy was walked, too, and the Mariners had the bases loaded with one out. Right fielder Jacob Peddicord took four balls and the Mariners scored a run to cut the lead to three. The next batter up, Jus-

tin Byrd, hit a shot to center field, driving in two runs, but the Diamondbacks made a perfect throw into the infield and tagged out the Mariners third base runner at home, saving the game from going into extra innings. During this nail-biting finish, the Mariners felt confident that they would be able to pull off a win, according to Mariners Head Coach Scott Superior. I really thought we were going to have it, he said. My two aces were on the mound tonight. With Sweitzer on the mound, the Diamondbacks needed just one last out, and they got it by forcing a grounder to first. They came back at the end, said Diamondbacks

Head Coach Chris Pavlik said. Zack pitched a good game. I was just hoping we could pull it out. Despite the loss, the Mariners were proud of their performance, according to Superior. I thought it was an excellent game, he said. It was the closest game we played all year. My kids hit the ball and fielded well tonight. Theyre a very young team and all of them are first year players Thats the best they played all year long and hopefully its just finally coming together.

Sudoku

Heres How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
