elcome to 2012! We at Sportsmans Gear magazine hope that you and your family had a wonderful new years celebration and we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for reading our publication. For hunters, we have a great new product to introduce you to: the New Kestrel 4500 Pocket Weather Tracker and Kestrel Portable Vane Mount. The Kestrel 4500 features a digital compass, adding heading, wind direction, headwind, tailwind and crosswind readings to its list of features. The 3.6 ounce instrument measures: wind speed, wind direction, crosswind, headwind/tailwind, temperature, wind chill, relative humidity, dewpoint, heat stress index, barometric pressure, altitude, density altitude and wet bulb temperature. Though the Kestrel 4500 is more than just a weather meter for checking the current conditions, its a tracking device that allows the user to log the environmental data for extended periods of time. The 2000-data point log is customizable, allowing users to determine automatic storage intervals as well as store information manually with a single button press. Once programmed, the unit wakes up at the programmed interval to measure and store all the readings. The data can then be reviewed in graphical form with a scrolling cursor that tells the date, time and value for each reading. It can also be uploaded to a computer using the optional Kestrel Interface. To read more about this tool, check out the article on page 40. The unique Silverado XFE incorporates unique aerodynamic enhancements, a 5.3L/six-speed automatic powertrain and other details to deliver its EPA-rated 22 mpg on the highway. The segmentexclusive Silverado Hybrid returns for 2012, delivering a 23.5-percent improvement in overall fuel economy while offering the Silverados traditional capabilities including a 6,200- pound (2,812 kg) towing capacity. New and revised exterior features for 2012 include a chrome mesh grille matched with either a chrome surround on LS and LT models or a body-color surround on LTZ. LTZ models feature a luxury-inspired interior with a unique instrument panel, door panels, largercapacity center console that offers 20.1 liters of undivided storage and other distinct trim. A stadium-style rear seat with a 60/40split design and folding center armrest is standard on crew cab models and available on extended cab models. It can be easily folded up with one hand, 14
without using a release handle, to provide an uninterrupted load floor. Alternatively, either section of the split seat can be stowed independently, allowing room for both cargo and a rear- seat passenger. Rear access doors open 170 degrees for easy entry to the rear seat/storage area of extended cab models. Power-operated rear side windows lower completely into the 170-degree access doors, providing 100-percent openness on LT and LTZ models. Powertrain Silverado models are powered by an efficient lineup of engines, led by Vortec small-block V-8s. Advanced technologies such as Active Fuel Management (AFM) and variable valve timing (VVT) optimize
performance and efficiency. Three FlexFuel engines are available and partnered with fuel-saving AFM giving customers the choice of powering their truck with E85 ethanol, gasoline or a combination of both fuels. Chassis and Suspension Built on GMs full-size truck platform, the Silverado incorporates features such as a fully boxed frame with a hydroformed front section coil-overshock front suspension and rack-andpinion steering. NK Announces Release of the New Kestrel 4500 Pocket Weather Tracker and Kestrel Portable Vane Mount NK announces the addition of the latest Kestrel Pocket Weather Meter to its line of precision weather instruments. The Kestrel 4500 features a digital compass, adding heading, wind direction, headwind, tailwind and crosswind readings to its list of features. The 3.6 ounce instrument measures: wind speed, wind direction, crosswind, headwind/tailwind, temperature, wind chill, relative humidity, dewpoint, heat stress index, barometric pressure, altitude, density altitude and wet bulb temperature. The Kestrel 4500s new wind direction functions are of particular interests for two market segments pilots and shooters. Especially with small planes, crosswind is a crucial piece of information while landing and taking off. Pilots can manually enter their known runway heading and then measure the wind, and the Kestrel calculates the crosswind component. Crosswind also greatly affects a bullets trajectory. Sophisticated ballistics software takes this information into account, along with relative humidity, altitude, dewpoint and temperature. Now shooters can simply line up the Kestrel with the target to automatically set the heading, and this vital environmental condition is provided. Though the Kestrel 4500 is more than just a weather meter for checking the current conditions, its a tracking device that allows the user to log the environmental data for extended periods of time. The 2000-data point log is customizable, allowing users to determine automatic storage intervals as well as store information manually with a single button press. Once programmed, the unit wakes up at the programmed interval to measure and store all the readings. The data can then be reviewed in graphical form with a scrolling cursor that tells the date, time and value for each reading. our commute has its own dangers, but winter weather can present additional challenges that make daily travels even more difficult. What is Blizzak? The Bridgestone Blizzak brand was introduced in North America in 1992, designed specifically to provide drivers with improved handling in treacherous winter driving conditions. The tread compound of Bridgestone Blizzak winter tires is more pliable than traditional tires, and remains flexible in cold temperatures. When water freezes to ice, tiny irregularities form on the surface. If the tread compound is rigid, the tire will tend to slide across these irregularities. If you live in a climate where winter conditions are common for three or more months of the year, winter tires are a smart investment. Depending upon your driving habits, one set can see you through several winter seasons. The winter tire is designed to provide maximum performance in low winter temperatures and on ice, snow and slush. This tire performs better due to its combination of more flexible sidewalls, winter tread patterns, deeper tread depth, and perhaps most importantly, tread compounds which remain soft in the lowest winter temperatures. With the development of Bridgestones latest Blizzak the WS70 a great emphasis was also put on improving tire performance regardless of climate, including during normal road conditions (i.e., cold conditions, but without snow, ice or slush).

How do I tell the difference between a dedicated winter tire and others? Retailers offer a wide range of tires sold as winter tires with an M+S (mud and snow) rating, but they are not at all equal in performance. The best performing winter tires have a snowflake-on-the-mountain symbol branded on the tires sidewall. The RMA (Rubber Manufacturers Association) designates winter tires that meet the newest severe snow standard with this special symbol. Tires that have earned this symbol can be expected to provide 25 to 50 percent more traction in winters worst conditions, which may be the difference between driving safely and losing control.
