CESVI

cooperazione e sviluppo
Cesvi is a non-governmental, international humanitarian organisation which is working in 30 countries throughout the world. Cesvi is dedicated to the reduction of suffering and working towards the ultimate elimination of poverty in the worlds poorest countries through the mobilisation and active participation of the recipients of aid. In 2008, the food security objective was added to the priorities set by Cesvi as a consequence of the dramatic increase in the number of the starving and malnourished across the world. In order to manage various campaigns, Cesvi had set the goal to bring fund raising capacity to exceed 20 million Euro per year. This objective has been achieved and exceeded, also thanks to the generosity of individual donors across Italy, whose donations for 2008 grew by 30%. However, we must look to the future with some caution, whilst continuing our investment in innovation and our own improvement. The Cesvi Approach: From Food Aid to Development The food security sector is one of Cesvis main work areas. Cesvi does not believe that one sole approach can solve the hunger problem: the link between food scarcity and economic development, inadequate health systems and poor social development needs to be analysed before all else. In addition, the connection between political instability, the absence of democracy, gender problems, conflict and hunger should not be overlooked: the States that rank highest for having the worst fed populations are frequently afflicted by long and serious conflicts, or countries with no policies able to solve gender inequality, whether in educational, social or health contexts.Food security is consequently a multidimensional question.

The Social Business Challenge

The project is happening simultaneously all over Italy until February, 20th. It consists in the development of a campaign of fundraising to a Cesvis Food Security Project at Zimbabwe, named Partnership models for sustaining viable land use initiatives and livelihoods in semi-arid TFCAs", financed by the European Commission. Cesvis project aims rehabilitate the Shashe irrigation scheme, located in the Maramani Communal which is part of Beitbridge District, that was build on 1960. The scheme also falls into the Greater Mapungubwe Transfontier Conservation Area, a land use initiative between Zimbabwe, botswana and South Africa. Along with the rehabilitation of the scheme, it is being developed a model introducing a high value crop (Citrus) to generate commercial viability. The Citrus was chosen due the ideal agronomic conditions, land and water availability, juicing facility and expertise in citrus, the production available in the area and the potencial for expansion. 120 (one hundred twenty) hectares of oranges will be irrigated by centre pivots in block C and D with a potential to increase up to 500 (five hundred) hectares. The trees take five years to bear commercially viable fruit, for juice only. There are two business partnership: The Beitbridge Juicing Limited, a citrus juicing factory is approximately 70 kilometers from Shashe; and the Nottingham Estate, citrus producers since 1950, that provides support in terms of expertise and maintenance of infrastructure. Therefore, granting them to continue the project when CESVI leaves the local. Each group must achieve or overcome the goal of 2000.

This way the Social Business Challenge is affecting thousands of people and will develop an agricultural system to help them fighting poverty.

The Campaign
The name of the campaign, SPERANCIA, is a neologism created by combining the words "Speranza" and "Arancia". The purpose of the campaign is to raise funds for the development of an orange plantation in Zimbabwe, which will improve the lives of thousands of citizens, give them something that every human being has the right to have, but in some cases that the reality does not allow: THAT IS HOPE! The idea that motivates the project is to provide not only raising funds, but also generating reflection on society. Thus, the focus will be divided in pursuing a relationship with companies who already have records of corporate social responsibility and at the same time, trying to reach also those closer in order to show that we can all do a little to make the world better. Combining the concept structured to the campaign with the Cesvi's Food Security project and the personal goals of members of this team, there is a slogan: "Plant the change. Plant an orange in Zimbabwe". Through all of this longs to show people that a small donation can represent a major
