1) To what extent do authors use the portrayal of trapped characters to criticize society - Jane Eyre - red room entrapment

- critcize society because of their class struggle or social platforms and how the poor are treated more horribly than the rich (enslavement) - being trapped in society - governess - no respect trapped on marriage due to class barriers..only after gaining wealth she can marry rochester trapped as governess-a position with knowledge of upper class but paid as a servent, sometimes society is criticizes owners because they treat people who have more knowledge than them Hamlet - Hamlet is trapped in inability to make decision, shows the political unrest of Denmark to a certain extent - Hamlets entrapment between antic disposition and real life, he has to put an act to figure out what exactly is happening in Denmark - Love vs Fathers revenge - Hamlet is trapped between Ophelia and hatred for women, shows the women in Denmarks unmoral act, marrying someone without being afraid of incest after their husband have died, shows unloyal wives in Demarks society Solitude -Colonel is trapped between the wars, shows the corruption of the government, no difference between communists and liberals -Jose arcadio buendia is trapped between technology annd family..cricticizes technology for the downfall of the town (railroad lead to the banana massacre)...ya but this guy if the one first so flying carpets, ice, alchemy so less time spent with ursula and spends all money of his family - same guy as above is tied to that tree, limits his personal character development -meme whose lover is killed by fernanda is imprisoned in convent by fernanda...critizes fernandas policies/society because in order to keep her respect/dignity she sacrifices she childs freedom 2) Literature often concerns itself with the concept of change. Explore the varying ways change in impacted Lear - change occurs when Lear divides up kingdom (civil war and fight inbetween families), change of power - change as the youth betray and overtake the old...shows the hunger for power, impacts the whole kingdom as it is drawn into a state of war, confusion, chaos and turmoil...shows that change can lead to the downfall of not only the family but also the kingdom. - change in Lear (he becocmes more humble as the play progresses after he endures the storm rather than when he was at the beggining when he was arrogant) - change in the realization of truth (blindness to the truth) - main character Lear and Gloucester realize who their really loyal and loving children are towards the end of the novel rather than at the beggining when they were believing their unloyal ones and got fooled and betrayed) Hamlet - change of the king (stable to more corrupt) nation as a deceased body -

Jane - change occurs when Jane moves from Gateshead and Lowwood (her worst moments in her life) to Thornfield and Moore HOuse - she is acutally loved and finally has a HOME - from the beginning of her life to the end of the novel, jane life is moving in a linear fashion and she is experiencing change throughout (she is married and now has family where as opposed to beggining where she was a orphan) Solitude -change when gypsies arrive - improvement in technologies -change with banana plantation/railroad-loss of innocence of macondo before: people used to be surprised with technology(ice/flying carpet) Now: people have no emotions or reactions towards it, are are more normal with it, it has become norm to society -change the war brings to the city of macondo and buedia family

3) Compare the ways in which writers have explored the impact of religion on human behavior Solitude -Whole of macondo just believes in God but after the introduction of the church..this view changes now ppl have to worship only in church -Fernanda has different religious beliefs and she tries to enforce them on the buendias - people lost faith..remeber spiritual decline..sex with donkeys..too much parties and drinking so shows religion is important for the sustainability of society -the five year rain symbol to cleanse the evil similar to the floods of noah bible -history of macondo similar to the bible itself .. Jane eyre -Brocklehurst..Evangelical, hypocritical (uses money that is supposed to fund Lowood to feed and luxurize him family), very harsh and strict towards the children at the gateshead, very hateful and oppressive -Helen burns...passive nature, her principle: to love enemies and to not defy/revolt -St.john... beliefs that god is his life, and devoting himself to god is a proper use of his life, therefore he is missionary and very structured and principaled character (god is everything to him) -jane eyre...moral, complete faith in god, (prays when she is in need) but does not accept any one of the other 3 characters belief in religion...this keeps her moving in whenever she encounters any problem such as marriage which rochester (she rejecys because she is morally bound against religion and also society)...believes in supernatural call from rochester Hamlet - characters want to go to heaven not hell - therefore they admit their mistakes before they die (Leartes apoligies with hamlet)

- Hamlet doesnt kill when Claudius is praying shows how he wants his soul to go to hell from hamlets point of view and from Claudiuss point of view, shows his remores and his afraid of death, so he seeks religion -Laertes does not care abt his soul...ready to kill hamlet with deciet and even in a church 4) Defiance becomes our duty in the face of injustice. How have writers persuaded readers to accept or challenge this view Lear - Edgar and cordelia challenge the enemies who are doing injustce Edgar - fighting for Gloucester and he is cruelly got his eyes plucked out Cordelia - fights for the injustice done to her father, fights against her other two sisters Hamlet - injustice done to his father (killed secretly), mother (to some extent lured by claudius), the kingdom and most importantly himself because he was next to take the throne and become king -he defies claudius explanation of the death being (was does he say abt how king hamlet dies snake bit in garden)...he does not trust/rely anyone -he denies committing suicide resists his temptation to die and leave his problems...to be or not to be...because he has to take revenge for his fathers injustice Eyre - Helen Burns accepts injustice done to her - love her enemy policy -Jane eyre ready to revolt whenever she sees injustice -in thornfield against her cruel aunt...she defies her aunt and argues so much that at one point even her aunt thinks she is defeated...shows how even a small child can revolt when there is injustice.i Solitude - colonel defies communists for their ideologies, corruption, power and therefore joins forces with liberals to bring the uprising....injustice to people of macondo -similarly jose arcadio segundo leads an uprising with the workers in the banana plantation because u know why 5)How and to what extent have seasons and weather been used King Lear - storm - shows unrest in country and shows lear mood Jane Eyre - shows her mood (bright weather when she is happy and Storm when she is in desperate and horrible condition - for example the red room) -chestnut tree split ...love splits

6) Symbols and motifs are important elements of literature. Examine how they have been used and how successful they are. Jane Eyre - Seasons, weather, storms - Splintered Chestnut Tree - Bertha Mason - Fire and Ice - Gross Porridge King Lear - Storm - Feather - Lear's Crown - Blindness and Madness Hamlet - Yorick's skull - ghost - unweeded garden - hamlet's costume change - flowers - Hearing and ears - Madness One hundred years of solitude - golden fish - encyclopedia - term "yellow" - railroad 7) Relationship between character and setting - Refer to #6 8)how do perspectives of women and men differ, how does it make the narrative more interesting Lear Hamlet Solitude Jane

9) In literature the concept of home is often used to locate the thoughts, memories and dreams of humankind. In the light of this quotation, explore the ways in which home is used Lear - home refers to his kingdom and where he has shelter Jane - home refers to a place where Jane is loved and is protected and has shelter - multiples places where she lived but all not considered as home cause she was not loved in all the places Solitude - a place where characters take refuge. -Buendia home captures all the memories - Macondo - Colonel Aureliano Segundo wanting to find home and way too much solitude there - the Buendia house how it has all these memories and ghosts King Lear and 100 Years: - Madness (wisdom in madness). Jose Arcadio Buendia goes insane, King Lear does, the Fool shows wisdom in his madness, Edgar pretends to be mad - Storms representing pathetic fallacy (what the characters are feeling is represented by a storm). So the Deluge in 100 years that lasts 4 years, and the storm expereinced by Lear as hes going mad with pain of losing his kingdom. - Tragic Ending of Goodness. So in King Lear, Cordelia dies at the end when she was a good person thrhoguht and also right near the end Edmund when killed by Edgar repents and says "But they loved Edmund!" indicating hes sad for what he did. In 100 years, Remedios dies while being a good person and innocent. Hamlet and 100 Years: - Ghost of Conscience (Hamlet's Father, Prudencio Aluigar who was killed by Jose Arcadio comes to him and torments him as a ghost) - Meloncholy, philosophical characters. (All the Aurelianos throughout the book are liek this with the exception of Jose Arcadio Segundo who is also like that, except thats cuz he was switched at birth with Aureliano Segundo so that should've been his real name. Hamlet himself is like this, having studied at the University of Wittenburg and being really speculative and philosophical, and sad.)

Incest (Aureliano Jose, son of Colonel Aureliano, wants to fuck his aunt, Amaranta. Arcadio wants to fuck his mom, Pilar Ternera. Ursula is really scared about incest and is herself married to her first cousin so all the problems in her descendents she blames on that. Aureliano (II), illegitimate son of Meme (Renata Remedios) who is daughter of Aureliano Segundo, fucks his aunt Amaranta Ursula and they have a baby with a pig's tail just like Ursula didn't want.

In Hamlet incest is between:

Gertrude and Claudius (they were brother,sister-in-law) Hamlet and Gertrude (in that scene where he says frailty thy name is woman and is angry at his moms sexual affairs with Claudius) Laertes and Ophelia (sometimes Laertes makes sexual innuendo to Ophelia, and when she dies he puts his hands in her hands in the coffin indicating he loved her or something)
