Sports: Oval Trust has advised that in conjunction with the Canowindra Garden Club, the back up watering system is up and running allowing easier irrigation for the top oval and Morris Park. ANOTHER CHAPTER FOR LOCAL FARMING General Manager Matt Goodwin and Branch Manager Richard Oliver (above) are excited at the prospect of continuing to provide Canowindra and district farmers quality service and supplies under the Lucerne Foods banner, built up over the last few years by David and Christina Rice. The name will only change slightly to honour the 50 years of continual business, and Lucerne Foods Farm Machinery Centres new owners, McClintock & Co Group, bring with them 65 years of knowledge and resources to add to the business. The McClintock Group have three other farm machinery locations in Forbes, Grenfell, and their head office in West Wyalong. The hay production expertise currently offered at Lucerne Foods, combined with that of the dry land farming practices of West Wyalong and irrigated production from Forbes, increases the range of support the business can offer. Matt and Richard are currently implementing new office systems to network with the other McClintock locations, so that parts and machinery can be sourced closer and delivered quicker when needed, reducing costs and down time for farmers. Lucerne Foods Farm Machinery Centre will retain the current team of local staff, and the Kubota and Krone stable of machinery. They are looking to increase resources such as staff, parts, workshop area and brands. Richard McLeish will be joining the team on Thursday as Sales Representative, bringing with him years of experience in all aspects of farm machinery from his previous role with Case IH. Matt emphasises that they are here for the long term and look forward to partnering with all generations of farmers to help reduce overheads and increase efficiency of all farm machinery practices.

SENIOR CRICKET NEWS Canowindra Cricket Club came agonisingly close to winning the Doug Wright Shield after falling to Grenfell by only 3 runs last Saturday. In the first year of the new twenty20 competition Canowindra had played very well in the previous rounds with strong wins over Carcoar and Valleys so confidence was high heading into the final. Bowling first Canowindras Nick Guthrie removed danger man Alec McSpadden for 0. Terry Knight and Henry Hunt then started a partnership that frustrated the Canowindra team with many balls falling just out of reach. Canowindra were bowling and fielding well and after 10 overs Grenfell were restricted to only 1/26. The runs started being scored a little more freely after this before Nick Traves removed Knight for 24. Dallas Hazell was then run out for 12 before Peter Guthrie took two wickets in the last couple of overs. Grenfell finished their 20 overs making 5/109 with Hunt remaining 63 not out. Peter Guthrie took 2/11 while Nick Guthrie (1/15) and Nick traves (1/36) were the other wicket takers. Canowindras innings started well with Jake Devlin hitting some big shots before falling for 17. Brendan Traves fell fourth ball without scoring. Ian Morrow then joined Peter Guthrie with the score only on 23. These two moved the score to 52 before Morrow fell for 11. Nick Guthrie joined brother Pete and moved the score along quickly with their run rate well ahead of Grenfells and things were looking good before Nick fell to an amazing outfield catch for 11. With the score on 76 work was still needed and Shaun Craven kept things ticking over with two boundaries before falling for 13. With two overs remaining Canowindra needed 19 runs and with Pete Guthrie still at the crease looking in good form it still looked possible. Nine runs were scored off the second last over leaving 10 needed off the last over. Unfortunately however Guthrie was run out with and the task was then just a little too far with a six being needed on the last ball. Canowindra ended up with 6/106 and this was a tough loss after what was a great effort with ball and bat from the boys. Peter Guthrie was the stand out with the bat making 41 and almost guiding the boys to victory. This was a great effort in Canowindras first attempt at a twenty20 competition and with a young team containing only three players over 22 the boys had a great run to make it this close to the shield. Next week the boys return to the regular 40 over competition at home against Bowling Club at home in Canowindra. A big thank you to the Canowindra Bowling Club for their continued support. Due to space restraints this week, the results of the Canowindra Cricket Club versus Tigers Australia Day Twenty20 cricket match fundraiser for the Jane McGrath Foundation will be published in next weeks Phoenix. Trust me, it will be worth the wait!

NEW OFFERINGS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL CANTEEN Ever wondered why some students are like Dennis the Menace early in the school day??? Often its because they dont have breakfast before they come to school. Canowindra High is trialling something that may help concentration spans and behaviour early in the school day. A special breakfast menu will start at the Canteen from Monday 30 January, 8.30 to 8.45 am. Students are able to purchase toasted sandwiches, muffins, cereal, untoasted cheese and bacon buns, fruit, flavoured milk and juice at a cost of $1.50 per item. A combo is available where students can purchase both a food item and a drink for $2.50. The P&C has worked out the trial menu with canteen manager, Sue Townsend, who is looking forward to the new challenge which she hopes will benefit both the students and the teachers. So if your "student" sleeps in and has to rush out of the house, remember that they are now able to buy their breakfast at the school canteen and have a great start to the day!

125g butter 1 cup brown sugar 1 tsp ground cinnamon 3 eggs cup plain flour cup self-raising cup almond meal cup sour cream 6 firm ripe Amber Jewel plums, wedged cup plain flour, extra 2 tbs brown sugar, extra 40g butter, chopped, extra cup flaked almonds

Plum & Almond Crumble Cake

Preheat oven to 180C. Grease & fully line a 20cm round cake tin. Beat butter, sugar & cinnamon until pale & creamy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Combine flours & almond meal, stir in alternate batches with sour cream. Spoon into prepared tin & smooth the surface. Arrange plums over the surface in a single layer. Combine extra flour & sugar in a bowl, rub the butter in with your fingertips until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs, stir in the flaked almonds. Sprinkle evenly over the plums. Bake for 1 hours until a skewer inserted in centre comes out clean. Remove from oven & set aside for 30 minutes to cool slightly before turning onto a wire rack to cool completely. Cut into wedges and serve with fresh whipped cream.

AUSTRALIA DAY 2012 - MIM LOOMES The 18 year old, cookin and sewin teacher who arrived in Canowindra in May 1960 would never have dreamed of such a possibility. However here we are many years later and the impossibility has become a reality. I think that I can NOW call myself a local! I have always appreciated that Canowindra is a strong country community and it is the people and their efforts that make this town such a great place. Over time I have marvelled at the intelligence, talents, strengths, hard work and sheer determination of the people that live in this great and productive part of Australia. It has been the people of our town who have supported our family through good and bad times and we know that this support is extended to many other people. We need to be thankful for and continue to support our local commercial economy, our caring medical teams, the strong educational institutions, the dedicated church and fantastic sporting and cultural groups that operate within the area. So much of what makes Australia great is the time, effort and skills that people put in as volunteers. Use it or lose it was a wonderful catch cry of a fairly famous Cabonne resident a few years ago and I believe that this still applies today. Recently the local papers highlighted the need for more volunteers in our local area. Can I suggest that Use it or lose it applies here. There are so many benefits to people of all ages in becoming a volunteer. You will gain much more than you ever give, simply by volunteering. I know that many of you here today understand this as I can see many representatives of volunteer groups in the audience. For the young person so many job skills and work ethic can be learnt by helping community organisations. It looks great on your CV as well. For parents with children it enriches your life and sets a great example to the young ones while involving them in the community also. For the older person it is a chance to share your life long skills, it helps to keep you in touch with the wider world and keep the grey cells active and firing. People say that they dont have the skills to be a secretary or write something for the newspaper We all had to start to learn these skills at some time. It is just important that you start and keep on supporting the community that gives you so much. Whether you volunteer for Meals on Wheels, help run the Swimming or Pony Club, help with Balloon festivals or work at the Age of Fishes Museum or the Historical Society or any of the many other organisations that the community offers, you have something to give and great deal more to gain. Being bored should never be an option in our community. I once made a list of all the organisations in Canowindra and there were more than 100 different groups Im not going to mention them all now but I will say you will find a niche in one or more if you just offer your assistance. Or maybe you can encourage others to be a volunteer. Volunteering and working with the community helps you to express your Australian spirit and it is good fun too. So - Use it or lose it. Finally, I would like to thank those people who nominated me for this award. You should be up here with me as well. Your personal contribution to the community is not overlooked and will be remembered. I would thank my many friends in education that I have worked with over lots of years, in all the community groups and of course the Age of Fishes Museum staff and volunteers. My thanks would not be complete without mentioning the love and support that I enjoy from Max, Deanna, Craig and Roy. Thank you. I am very grateful and humbled by this award and consider it to be a wonderful way to start the new year. Thank you to everyone concerned for the award and this celebration of Australia Day. Thank you.

BOWLS REPORT On Sunday the Ron Worboys Pairs Tournament was held at Canowindra Bowling club which attracted 26 teams from around the region. It was great to see Rons two sons Graham and Bruce Worboys turn up for this special event to hand out the winners and runners up trophies, and also tee up together for a game of bowls. Winners on the day were Clive Andersons team from Grenfell with +36 (pictured ARISH OF T DWARDS above with Graham & Bruce Worboys), and ATHOLIC HURCH ANOWINDRA runners up Barney Robson and Rob Lynch with +29. SWIMMING CLUB Canowindras carnival went well on Sunday with Bob Hilton there to present the Hilton Family trophy to the winners of the business house relay. It went to Earsmans Concrete junior team who swam to within a second of their nominated time. The winning team was Molly Grant, Tori McKay, Finbar Smyth, Sienna ODea, Mitchell Stanley and Joe Coady (above with Bob Hilton, thanks to Ash Wright for the photo). As Canowindra had the most swimmers there they took out the pointscore with 176 points; Cowra was second on 114 points and thanks largely to Luke Touzell Polar Bears from Orange came third with 70 points. Thanks to all members of Canowindra Swimming Club who put their hands up for a job and stuck with it through a very sunny morning, it made the day run smoothly. At Swimming Club on Friday night the Spoon Final was almost a race between the McNamaras and the Stanleys as Ella Andrews swam her self away from the spoon with a seven second improvement in her time over the heats, semis and final. Literally left fighting in her wake it came down to a fingernail as Olivia McNamara again swam a personal best time to win her second spoon in 2 weeks. The relay was won by Lane 2 who actually swam exactly to their handicap time a feat rarely seen at Swimming Club.
