OUTDOOR CLASSROOM
The Cats Pajamas, a national touring all-male vocal group, will perform Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Northland Pines High School (NPHS) in Eagle River. This performance is part of the groups multistate Music in Schools Tour, to help support local music programs. The Cats Pajamas pride themselves on their singing talents and their ability to engage each audience member during their interactive performances. Their blend of classic songs with a modern a cappella twist showcases their unique style. The group is based out of Branson, Mo., and performs 200 shows per year. It has been a Top 15 finisher on NBCs The Sing-Off, Top 30 finisher on Next Great American Band, and has also been seen on Americas Got Talent and Oprah. Two of the five mem-
LUMBER FROM THE LAND Northland Pines Middle School students recently participated in Lumber from the Land, a program created by a team of Northland Pines School District eighth-grade teachers and funded by a grant from the Land O Lakes Fish and Game Club. The students were provided with a multifaceted outdoor classroom experience in the Northland Pines School Forest along Chain of Lakes Road. The information and products will be used in several classes, including science, art and history. Some of the scenes included: Above: Bennie Gingerich guided two horses as they skid a log. Right: Guidance counselor and former logger Craig Rismon explained the cutting process to the students. Bottom right: Darwin Larson lined up a log to be milled on the portable sawmill. HOW HAVE YOUR EATING HABITS OR YOUR GROCERY SHOPPING ROUTINES BEEN AFFECTED?
John Schuh Phelps
Weeks loss: No weigh-in
John is on vacation until next week. We will be showcasing how he did while away from the group.
I have cut out sweets, eaten more salads and steamed vegetables. I am taking healthy snacks with me so that I do not grab fast food on the go. Ive always been one who reads food labels when I shop. This program just reinforces that and makes you more aware of portion sizes. I am disappointed in my lack of weight loss this week, even though I ate less, so I will be even more conscious of what I am eating and when.
I have been watching what I eat and how much I eat. I am more aware of better choices, and more aware of good snack foods. My grocery shopping hasnt changed much, as I have been watching what I put in my shopping cart for the past three months.
The way I prepare food and shop has changed. The majority of what I eat is unprocessed foods. I prepare my own meals so I know what is going in my meal. Adding spices improves the way the foods taste. Using healthy recipes is adding new meals to my recipe box!
Wen we first started not so long ago, the mindset of a lot of participants was of fear, uncertainty and doubt. That alone can prevent someone from making a change. These guys willingly chose to take the plunge and am I glad they did. This week I saw the start of the change of thinking necessary to permanently change your lifestyle from sedentary to active. Thats the confidence gained once youve passed that initial training to train period. Now theyre in the second phase of increasing the workload. We did workouts that anyone would find challenging and that regular exercisers have complained or made excuses while doing. Not these people! I heard encouragement, positivity, and an I can attitude instead of an I dont think so attitude. I think they fully understand the phrase: What doesnt kill you will make you stronger.
I feel like I have always gotten fruits and vegetables at the store, but also I guess I would buy a few bad things. So with this challenge and my personal goal, I have been really watching calories and what I am taking in on my daily diet. Trying to get down to less than 2,000 calories a day to help me lose weight, with the increase in daily exercise.

Friedel-Hunt:
you wish. Then get the pieces out of the box, spread them out on a table and sort, keeping the ones that still tell you something about who you are. For example, I often choose words like integrity or nature because they tell me what I value. I choose pictures of trees, friendship, lovers, dogs and even angels. They all say something about me. You can also include old (or new) photographs. Now glue these to the poster board in an order that makes sense to you, and you have a collage about you your values, beliefs, loves, goals and more. You can also do the reverse by collecting pictures and words that are not you. It is important to know what does not represent you. On a collage like that I might have a

picture of war or poverty. These pictures can be glued to the back of your poster, showing who you are on one side and who you are not on another. Exercises like this assist us in self-awareness as we grow and change over time. Doing one of these or one similar to it can help us discover ourselves, as it helps to be specific about who you are and who you are not. It is also fun. Enjoy the journey. It is all we have.
