Becoming all we can be

I am writing this column on what would have been my husband Bills 81st birthday. It is a special day for me as I remember all he did to actualize the potential God gave him. He became a kind, sensitive human being who spent his adult years as a husband, father and friend; minister and caring clinical psychologist; woodworker and poet; nature and pet lover. Oh, there is so much more, but this list makes me aware of the talents we all have, many of which never become actualized because we are running through life way too quickly, missing the opportunities that are right beneath our noses, across the breakfast table, in our offices and at the grocery store. One does not need a doctorate in psychology to reach out to people. Nor does one have to be a poet or fantastic woodworker to express care and concern. What one does have to do is just what Bill did be true to himself. So the question remains, Who is this self? I have an exercise that I use in my office to assist people who are in doubt about who they are. It consists of gathering magazines of all kinds. Your local library might have some or your neighbors. Then get a shoebox, a pair of scissors, glue and a poster board or two. One starts by quieting ones self. Then choose a magazine and start roaming through it, cutting out words, phrases and pictures that appeal to you. Dont analyze, just cut. Just look and cut if it appeals to you. Put them in the box. Do that over several days on and off for as long as To FRIEDEL-HUNT, Pg. 4B

Watch the groups weight loss here weekly.

The group lost a total of 11 pounds.

W SPOTLIGHT W
Bobbie Hall Eagle River Weeks loss: 3 lbs.
My eating habits and grocery shopping changed dramatically last year when I started dieting. You cant lose weight and still eat what youve been eating and not exercise. Something has to change. It should be noted that Bobbie You need to check ingredients and look has already lost 57 lbs. previous at serving sizes on everything you buy. I to this competition, so it is more only buy healthy foods now. No white common to plateau at this point. bread or rice. Lots of vegetables and She has already taken meafruit. People say they cant afford to eat sures to bust the plateau by healthy, but my groceries cost less now mixing up her training. without all the processed junk.

HOW HAVE YOUR EATING HABITS OR YOUR GROCERY SHOPPING ROUTINES BEEN AFFECTED?

Weeks loss: 0 lbs.

I have cut out sweets, eaten more salads and steamed vegetables. I am taking healthy snacks with me so that I do not grab fast food on the go. Ive always been one who reads food labels when I shop. This program just reinforces that and makes you more aware of portion sizes. I am disappointed in my lack of weight loss this week, even though I ate less, so I will be even more conscious of what I am eating and when.

Tabitha Avery Eagle River

Weeks loss: 1 lb.

I have been watching what I eat and how much I eat. I am more aware of better choices, and more aware of good snack foods. My grocery shopping hasnt changed much, as I have been watching what I put in my shopping cart for the past three months.
The way I prepare food and shop has changed. The majority of what I eat is unprocessed foods. I prepare my own meals so I know what is going in my meal. Adding spices improves the way the foods taste. Using healthy recipes is adding new meals to my recipe box!

Wen we first started not so long ago, the mindset of a lot of participants was of fear, uncertainty and doubt. That alone can prevent someone from making a change. These guys willingly chose to take the plunge and am I glad they did. This week I saw the start of the change of thinking necessary to permanently change your lifestyle from sedentary to active. Thats the confidence gained once youve passed that initial training to train period. Now theyre in the second phase of increasing the workload. We did workouts that anyone would find challenging and that regular exercisers have complained or made excuses while doing. Not these people! I heard encouragement, positivity, and an I can attitude instead of an I dont think so attitude. I think they fully understand the phrase: What doesnt kill you will make you stronger.

Rochelle Frank Eagle River

Weeks loss: 3 lbs.

I feel like I have always gotten fruits and vegetables at the store, but also I guess I would buy a few bad things. So with this challenge and my personal goal, I have been really watching calories and what I am taking in on my daily diet. Trying to get down to less than 2,000 calories a day to help me lose weight, with the increase in daily exercise.

Julias Comment of the Week

You have to first learn how to train. Go through the motions and let your body learn how to move in the manner youre asking it to. Once that is achieved, its time to start real training. Bump up the intensity. Increase your weights. The body adapts to stress rather quickly in the beginning. Thats when you see mind-boggling results. Those adaptations result in fat loss and strength gain pretty rapidly when done correctly. People at this point gain confidence in the gym as their coordination and stability are no longer such a hindrance. Julia John

The world-renowned Pro Arte Quartet will perform Sunday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. at Nicolet College Theatre in Rhinelander. Celebrating its centennial this year, the string quartet from UW-Madison was the first ensemble-in-residence to be established at a major American university. These are outstanding musicians, said Nicolet College Theatre director Jim Nuttall. Ive always wanted to get them here for our Nicolet Live! series, and the UW Arts Outreach Program made it possible. The quartet serves UWMadison with a full schedule of performances, education and recordings, and produces a series of live radio broadcasts each season as the resident ensemble of the Chazen Museum of Art. Pro Arte Quartet has performed throughout the United States, Europe and Asia, and has been featured at the White House. The performance will include a mix of classical standards and some new commissioned works. Musicians of the Pro Arte Quartet are David Perry, violin; Suzanne Beia, violin; Sally Chisholm, viola; and Parry Karp, cello. All are artists-inresidence and professors at UW-Madison. Heart-care team expands services

The Marshfield Clinic and Ministry Health Care heartcare team has announced changes in heart-care services in the North Woods effective in February. Its no surprise that the need for heart-care services has steadily increased over the past years as our population ages, said Jack Kruit, cardiology services manager for Marshfield Clinic. The cardiology specialists from Marshfield Clinic are now available at the following sites in the North: Dr. Michael McGill, Ministry Medical Group-Eagle River and Marshfield Clinic Minocqua Center; Dr. Richard Reinhart, Ministry Medical Group/Ministry Saint Marys Hospital in Rhinelander and Ministry Medical Group-Crandon; and Dr. Thomas Roy, Marshfield Clinic Minocqua Center and Marshfield Clinic Park Falls Center. According to the American Heart Association, heart failure affects about 5 million Americans. Life-threatening heart problems happen to people in the North Woods every day and we want to be sure that we have the right cardiologists and technology in the right places for the people in our North Woods communities, Kruit said. For more information or to schedule an appointment with a cardiologist, call the Marshfield Clinic and Ministry Health Care heart-care team at 1-(800) 853-0553.

you wish. Then get the pieces out of the box, spread them out on a table and sort, keeping the ones that still tell you something about who you are. For example, I often choose words like integrity or nature because they tell me what I value. I choose pictures of trees, friendship, lovers, dogs and even angels. They all say something about me. You can also include old (or new) photographs. Now glue these to the poster board in an order that makes sense to you, and you have a collage about you your values, beliefs, loves, goals and more. You can also do the reverse by collecting pictures and words that are not you. It is important to know what does not represent you. On a collage like that I might have a

jehintz@hotmail.com Supervisors of the Town of Three Lakes, Wisconsin, do hereby recognize 2012 to be the ceremonial and celebratory 60th anniversary year for the Three Lakes Lions Club and further encourage all citizens and visitors to participate in Lions special activities which will occur during each month of 2012, all intended to celebrate the unique status of our town, the spirit of volunteerism, and the pride which is reflected in those who give back to their community with no expectation of gain other than the satisfaction that comes with helping others. The proclamation makes reference to the clubs motto, We Serve, and names a few of the past and present distinguished members, including the late John Kotarski, past District Gov. Ted Bonkowski, Don Burnside and active member past District Gov. Harry Eccles as examples of the spirit of service and volunteerism over the past six decades that has been embodied by the Three Lakes Lions to the present day. The proclamation goes on to say, Thanks to annual Lions events, such as the Fishing Derby, Easter party, Sight Fund charities providing eye examinations and glasses to those without means, Halloween parade and party, auction, Christmas party, pancake breakfast and the largest Fourth of July parade in the North Woods, word has spread far and wide about Three Lakes, helping to shape a pos-
