Spotlight on . . .

MAKING EVERY CHRISTIAN A MISSIONARY

Sylvester Furse
so grateful for all the prayers and give God all the glory for keeping me sane during this trying period. This summer, I obtained my Professional Land Surveyors License, which is another blessing from God. Work takes up a lot of my time, but when I do get some free time, I enjoy working out (its great stress relief), hiking, reading and finding new musical artist to listen to. As I mentioned before, I help the various worship teams here at church by playing drums. Helping with the worship at this church has been such a blessing on so many levels....I have gotten to know and be friends with the many wonderful and talented people on the worship teams; I have become better acquainted with the ministerial staff (who, as you already know, are all amazing people!); and most of all, I get to play a small part in helping lead the congregation

Hello! Let me start by introducing myself. My name is Sylvester Furse. For those that do not already know me, you may recognize me as the guy playing the drums on Sunday mornings. I have lived in the Rolla area my whole life. I currently reside in Rolla, but I grew up in Doolittle. I graduated from high school in Newburg (1995), obtained a drafting/design degree from Rolla Technical Institute (1996) and attended classes at MS&T (back when it was UMR). It was during my time at RTI that I became employed at Elgin Surveying. I have been employed there since 1996. As some of you may know, our company went through a very trying and uncertain period over the past few years, but thankfully, we recently merged with another local company, CM Archer in St. James, and our company now has a much more stable foundation. Amazing Moms is a new Sunday morning Christian Education class which will provide support and encouragement for single moms to enable them to face their challenges with integrity and grow into the Amazing Moms they want to be. Amazing Moms is scripture-based, and will give single mothers a chance to share their experiences with others who have similar unique parenting issues. It is not a pity party, gossip session, or a chance to daddy-bash! Amazing Moms leader Rose Skyles was a single mom of four, and comes to you with firsthand knowledge, experience, and a whole lot of

empathy. If you are a single mother of any age, please join this class in Room 103. This class meets every other week (February 5 and 19). Please contact Rose Skyles for more information. -Rose Skyles

Calendar updates at www.rolla-firstassembly.org/aboutus/calendar

Chinese carryout for a good cause!! Coming in February is your chance for a Chinese lunch, either carry-out or dine-in. We will have a menu in the bulletin, so you can mark which items you might want to order. You will turn in the menu or-

der the next week or two and pick up the order the following week. You also have the option of eating in on that day. There is no set price; those who order give whatever amount they would like for their order. Proceeds will go for trip expenses and donations to the foster homes. Watch the bulletin for more information! -Elaine Harrison

Mount Grace Teen Challenge Center, Winnfield, Louisiana

We will leave from the church parking lot at 6:00 am on Saturday, March 24, and return sometime in the afternoon of Saturday, March 31. We will go to Mount Grace Teen Challenge Center for Women in Winfield, Louisiana. While there, we will most likely be reinforcing the floor joists in the kitchen building, fabricating a retaining wall, repairing siding, doing interior kitchen repair, and fabricating walkways. There are also possible plumbing and electrical repairs. Please keep in mind that we must be flexible regarding job assignments; the director may reprioritize the job list at any time. A typical day begins with required morning worship and devotions. Jobs are assigned after devotions. Breakfast may precede devotions, or may follow by up to an hour as the kitchen staff prepares. After this, each team member will report to their work assignment, which may involve carpentry, painting, electrical work, plumbing, cleaning, or any of a number of other things. Skilled work will be performed by people who have training, but you may be asked to assist in an area where you have no prior knowledge. When the kitchen staff has made lunch, the trip leader will call everyone in. Work assignments may be changed at lunchtime if the need arises. After lunch the work continues until dinnertime, in general a bit later than you hoped. You will be very tired. In the evening, we may repeat devotions, go to church, have a group activity, or have time for fellowship. The next days breakfast time will be announced, and you will report to your room to fall into an exhausted sleep. We plan to take a day trip to Natchitoches, Louisiana, a historic French colony dating back to 1714. The new assemblies of God policy requires that all construction team members be over 14 years of age, and a parent must accompany anyone under 18. The trip cost is $100, with the first deposit to be paid by February 12. For more information, please pick up a pamphlet in the church foyer, or contact Kathi Garner at missions@rolla-firstassembly.org.

Gentlemen, start your engines! Come join us on Saturday, February 18th in the Roberts Family Life Center for our annual Pinewood Derby. We will start the races at 2pm. Popcorn and other snacks will be available for purchase if you would like. And if you would like to participate in our Open To Everyone category, please contact Bill Gentry or Pastor Brian if you need to purchase a kit to build your car! See you at the races!!! -Brian Feller

Tuesday February 14th, 6-7:30

Tickets are $30 per couple, or $50 for two couples, so bring a new couple with you. More information will be in the bulletin soon! Rehearsals have begun for our Easter musical. If you love to sing and would like to participate, there is still time to join the choir and we welcome you. At Christmas we celebrate the birth of our Savior. At Easter we remember His death on the cross and then celebrate His glorious resurrection. Now we look forward to the day that we will see Him coming in the clouds to take us home to be with Him forever. Hallelujah, Jesus is Alive! This We Believe! Practices are Sundays at 4:00 in room 107. Performances are Friday, April 6th at 7:00 pm and Saturday, April 7th at 6:00 pm. -Betty May

Thank you, Lord, for drawing us here with such gentle words: Return to the LORD, your God, for he is gracious and merciful and abounding in steadfast love (Joel 2:13).

"I looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found none. Ezekiel 22:30
The voices of so many who are being persecuted cries out to God. Their heart cries move across the world straight from the heart of God and into the hearts of those who are willing to stand in the gap for them. Voice of Martyrs reports the following: Behnam Irani, a 41-year-old pastor from Kraj, Iran has been imprisoned since May of 2011. He was originally in solitary confinement; he was then placed in a small room with so many prisoners they were not able to lie down to sleep. He is regularly taken from his cell and beaten. Pastor Yang Rongli and four other LinfenFushan church leaders from Shanxi Province, were sentenced to criminal detention for two to seven years for holding a prayer rally. At least 80 people were killed Christmas weekend in attacks across Nigeria, including assaults against two churches. In Maiduguri, the pastor of Victory Baptist Church was dragged out of his home by armed men and shot to death. For more than 40 years, Colombia has been terrorized by kidnappings and murders resulting from power struggles between drug lords, revolutionaries and paramilitary groups. But in the midst of the chaos, brave Christians in Colombia are risk-

ing their lives to spread the gospel. Christians in more than forty nations around the world today are being persecuted for their faith.

Closer to home
Missionaries in Dillingham Alaska often press in to areas so closed that restrictions are placed who can enter into the community. They sacrifice being with their families to help families are being destroyed by the work of the enemy through alcohol. Camp David reaches out to children of prisoners, who struggle with a different kind of persecution. On the 11th of Feb. a team will leave with Health Care Ministries to go to Haiti to reach out to an area still recovering from an earthquake and to bring light to those living in the darkness. What will we do? Some will go. Some will stand in the gap. When the Lord passes by Rolla Missouri on the 10th of February will He find those who are willing to stand in the gap? Join Monthly Prayer Watch. Feb 10, 2012. Prayer is from 8 pm -3 am. Prayer meeting is held in the sanctuary. Guest speaker is a representative of Voice of Martyrs. Come when you can and stay as long as you are able. For more information contact Carol Hudler at jhudler@centurytel.net or call 53-465-2733. -Carol Hudler

as we worship God. As I am sure any member of the various worship teams will tell you, it is amazing and humbling when the Spirit takes over our worship...to see you, as a part of the congregation, raising your hands and lifting your voices in praise as you worship...it makes getting up early on Sunday morning for practice more than worth it! I am very excited about The Accord, a new home fellowship group for unmarried adults ages 25 to 50. The group started with an idea that Mary Ann Rasmussen had, and after getting Debbie Matlock, Steffanie Rogers and myself involved, we are ready to start this new ministry. We all have a desire to create a safe environment where unmarried Christians can gather to fellowship, start healthy friendships and encourage one another as brothers and sisters in Christ. This group is not about finding the one...its about coming together, as one, and growing closer to Christ. We have a lot of exciting ideas for events and ministry opportunities for the group. We look forward to being able to expand this ministry beyond our church and into the community. Thanks for taking a little time to get to know me. Ill see you next Sunday...God Bless! -Sylvester Furse
