Sizzling celebrations

As the days cool down entertainment will be red hot in Moreton Bay region.
April and May will be action packed with family friendly events, top Australian musicians like James Reyne, The McClymonts and The Potbelleez, festivals, markets, exhibitions and fireworks. If youre looking for something to make Easter a standout, head to Redcliffes Festival of Sails this Good Friday. From 9am to 4pm on 22 April, Suttons Beach will transform into a colourful seaside carnival that runs in conjunction with the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht race. There will be over 100 specialty and gourmet food stalls, live music, roving entertainment, a visit by a parachuting Easter Bunny (weather permitting), sandsculpting, art, craft and music workshops for the kids, beach games and an Easter egg hunt. The following weekend the Urban Country Music Festival packs in the entertainment at the Caboolture Historical Village and surrounding venues. From Friday night, 29 April, until the Labour Day holiday on Monday, 2 May, there are plenty of free or low-cost activities planned including bush poets, bluegrass music, country rock and traditional country concerts, kids activities, markets, line dancers, whip cracking, and buskers.

American country music sensation Joe Nichols headlines the festivals ticketed Saturday night country concert that also includes James Reyne, The McClymonts, Jonahs Road and 2011 Toyota Star Maker Luke Dickens. On Sunday night, the festivals more urban fans will be able to take in Evermore, Thirsty Merc, The Potbelleez, Amy Meredith and Sinead Burgess. From 21 to 29 May, the region celebrates a range of arts and cultural activities at The Pine Rivers Festival.

Returning favourites include international cultural experiences at the Hills Carnivale, classic cars and music tributes at Rodz Rock n Roll, and markets and antiques at Dayboro Day. New this year is a chance to take a step back in time and experience a drive-in movie. For one night only, on Friday, 27 May, Pine Rivers Park will transform into the Revivin Drive In, a 60s diner and drivein event with a screening of the PG-rated film Hairspray. See the back page for festival highlights.

Equestrian Centre progress

The fit-out of the covered arena at the Caboolture state equestrian centre is continuing with construction expected to be completed by the end of August.
The covered stadium will include the indoor arena, seating areas, office space, and sites for the operation of food and beverage outlets. Behind the covered arena will be warm up arenas and work is also progressing on stabling facilities. The new Caboolture venue is exciting news for the states equestrian community because it will provide facilities that will attract internationalstandard events to Queensland for the first time. The project has received funding from the state and federal governments.

Day care vacancies

If youre looking for rewarding work at home, then Pine Rivers Family Day Care service might be looking for you. The council-operated service coordinates the placement of children with carers in their own home. There are more than 60 educators working through Pine Rivers Family Day Care, but more are needed in areas like Ferny Hills and North Lakes. The work can be rewarding and has the benefit of adding to the household income by caring for children at home. To find out more about either becoming an educator, or putting your children into family day care, contact Pine Rivers Family Day Care on 3285 5188, or visit www. moretonbay.qld.gov.au

New sea wall to protect Redcliffe

A 120-metre sea wall is to be constructed at Anzac Place at Redcliffe.
Design work is well advanced and council is expecting to appoint a contractor in April to build the stepped, buried sea wall by the end of 2011. The sea wall will complement the Captain Cook Park sea wall, built in 2009/10, and is supported by the Redcliffe Shoreline Erosion Management Plan that provides for an integrated approach to the management of shoreline erosion along the Redcliffe Peninsula. The project coincides with the $20million Redcliffe Seaside Village Rejuvenation Project. The project, which is expected to be complete before the end of the year, will transform the Redcliffe CBD and nearby foreshore areas into a modern, people friendly precinct.

Strathpine storm water

Three metres below a busy Strathpine intersection, a new drain is helping to handle excess storm water.
Earlier this year, council used a tunnel bore to carry out a $1.4 million upgrade on an 83-metre section of stormwater network directly below the intersection of Gympie Road and Bells Pocket Road at Strathpine. It meant traffic could continue to travel overhead while a 1.5-metre wide drain was constructed to handle storm water created by significant downpours.

part-time work can get an insight into Census 2011 jobs at workshops this April.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) will employ more than 400 collectors locally for up to 10 weeks between July and September. Council, in partnership with the ABS, is hosting the workshops to explain the positions and how to apply for them.

Greenlink flourishes
Playground equipment and landscaping is helping transform a drainage reserve into valuable parkland at Burpengary.
The installation of playground equipment near Symphony Court at Burpengary is expected to be finished by May, weather permitting. It is part of the Greenlink project - a master planned upgrade of 10 sites including drainage reserves and the Burpengary sports fields which will link them to create valuable recreational areas. Last years first stage of the ongoing project involved substantial tree plantings. Plans for the Greenlink project include a network of well lit, accessible pathways, fitness equipment, improved childrens play equipment, seating and shelters, and extensive landscaping working with existing stormwater structures.

Share music from many world faiths at Moreton Bay If youre planning camping or evening barbecues this Easter, dont forget the mosquito repellent. Extremely wet weather earlier this year has provided ideal insect breeding conditions. While council carries out an extensive mosquito control program, residents can also do their bit to keep numbers down. It takes only days for mosquitoes to breed in stagnant water, so it is important to regularly empty rainwater from pot plants, tyres, tarpaulin covers and other areas where it collects around the garden. Long-sleeved clothing and repellent will help guard against being bitten. Region Libraries Sacred Music 2011 Concert at 2pm on Sunday, 22 May. Bring a blanket or set up a chair for the concert, at Caboolture QUT campus on the corner of Manley and Tallon Streets, Caboolture and be captivated by the sounds of the didgeridoo, tabla, saz, guitar, and mesmerising vocals. The concert includes

artists who have travelled Australia, Turkey, Japan and India, and most recently the Woodford Folk Festival, with their unique musical style. Aboriginal, Sufi Islam, Buddhist, and Hindi faiths will be among those celebrating the cultural diversity in our local communities.
