There are plenty of ways to take a fresh air approach to maintaining an active lifestyle, by using the regions walking and cycling paths as well as outdoor gym equipment in parks. Les Hughes Sports Complex, Francis Road, Bray Park was the first park in Queensland to feature the user-friendly red and yellow outdoor gym equipment. The outdoor gym project, co-funded by council and Department of Sport and Recreation, has extended training options for residents, who regularly use the 2.5km exercise walking trail near the PCYC. Outdoor fitness equipment can also be found at Humpybong Park, Oxley Avenue, Redcliffe. A partnership between
MORLIV-1455-08

council and Redcliffe Youth Space has provided the federally funded equipment, which is suitable for teenagers and adults of all ages. This innovative equipment, which includes full written instructions, is suitable for all fitness levels and uses the participants own weight to offer the resistance needed to provide a total body workout. All parts pivot smoothly on bearings and use rubber stoppers to reduce sudden impacts. Regardless of your location, enjoy your daily physical activity by taking in the beauty of nature in Moreton Bay region. Enjoy a walk, jog or cycle by the foreshore, around the many lakes or hike through our natural landscapes.

Mapping out our sporting future

The future of sports facilities across Moreton Bay region is set to be all mapped out by early next year, thanks to a comprehensive planning project launched by council. Council has commenced a sports mapping plan which will identify the types of sporting facilities needed throughout the region. The project will research the current standard of facility provision for each sport, the capacity for each facility and will also map local sporting trends. Information will be collated about the growth of sporting organisations, existing facility use and capacity as well as predicted community and sports participation growth. This information will be analysed to determine the capacity of sports organisations and facilities to assist with meeting their future competition needs over the next 5 to 10 years. The project will add to the information already collected in the Pine Rivers district and provide a comprehensive regional plan for the future of sport in the Moreton Bay region. Once the sports mapping process is complete, council will develop a Regional Sport and Recreation Strategy. Council will consult with the relevant groups and organisations as part of the development of the sport and recreation strategy. The sports mapping project is expected to be completed by mid next year.

As the warmer weather approaches, many residents will be looking forward to a dip in their backyard pool or spa. However, since high level water restrictions are still in place, there are some points to remember before rolling back the covers, topping up the pool and taking a dip. Pool and spa owners will only be able to top up with town water as a last resort, and only when they have used all available water from a rainwater tank or from a downpipe rainwater diverter. If the premises does not have a rainwater tank or a downpipe

rainwater diverter, then town water is not permitted for topping up pools or spas. Downpipe rainwater diverters are available from hardware stores. Pool and spa owners are also required to have three of the following four water saving devices on the premises:

a swimming pool and/or spa cover three-star water efficient showerheads and taps dual flush toilets four-star water efficient washing machines.
New pools and spas must not be filled with town water owners should use rainwater or water sourced from outside South-East Queenslands drought-affected areas.

Council will play a key role in starting up a $10 billion business that will oversee the distribution of water to three million people in South-East Queensland. Ten South-East Queensland councils, including our own, will work together to ensure the new entity is running by mid 2010.

The water distribution business will employ more than 2,500 people and is part of reforms instituted by the state government to drought proof the region in the future. A board of directors and business management team for the business is expected to be in place by the latter half of next year. The $47 million Advanced Water Treatment Plant, in Bickle Rd, Murrumba Downs can now produce four million litres per day of recycled water for the Amcor paper mill. By using the recycled water, Amcor will be able to dramatically reduce its reliance on drinking water supplies. The Murrumba Downs plant was constructed in response to the state governments drought emergency directive and incorporates the latest water purification technologies.

Free bushfire information sessions

While most residents do the right thing with their rubbish, new laws mean council now has increased powers to help make sure the others clean up their act.
Hundreds of tonnes of rubbish are already picked up by councils litter crews each year, at a significant cost to ratepayers. It is hoped the state governments new litter laws will help reduce the amount of debris and rubbish ending up in our regions parks, waterways, highways and roadsides. Under the new laws, councils authorised officers can issue Clean Up direction notices to people dumping waste illegally. Council infringement notices can also be issued for dangerous littering, which includes throwing a lit cigarette into dry grass or smashing a glass bottle in a childrens playground. Council is sponsoring free information sessions on precautions residents can take to avoid bushfire damage. Queensland Fire and Rescue Service will conduct these sessions throughout November. They will be attended by local fire crews and in some cases Queensland Parks and Wildlife officers. Even homes some distance from vegetation can be vulnerable to the effects of fire embers, but by taking a few precautions people can greatly reduce the chance of damage. Details of information sessions can be obtained by phoning the Rural Fire Service Caboolture area office on 5420 1333.

Have your say in councils future by providing comments and feedback on the draft corporate plan for 2009 to 2013. When adopted, the corporate plan will provide a strategic direction for the next four years and will guide each budget, People with disabilities will find it easier to drop a line in and enjoy the bayside lifestyle, at some new fishing platforms at Scarborough. The platforms have been installed along two groynes at Osbourne Point and Shield St, Scarborough, to provide wheelchair access for those fishing enthusiasts keen to reel in the catch of the day. The $122,000 project has been co-funded by Moreton Bay Regional Council and the federal governments Recreational Fishing Community Grants Program. Signage has been installed at each location providing information such as legal catch sizes, bag limits, protected fish species and the value of the regions waterways and wildlife. policy and decision council makes. The draft Corporate Plan 2009 2013 will be on public display at councils 14 branch libraries, four community libraries and customer service centres from Monday, 10 November until Friday, 12 December 2008.

Council is keen to hear from all community members and businesses with ideas about where their local government should be headed. A dedicated page has been set up on councils website at www.moretonbay.qld. gov.au/corporateplan where members of the community can complete an online form to pass on their ideas. Alternatively you can lodge your submission directly to council.

Members of the community, sporting, environmental, church and charity groups have until 26 November, 2008, to nominate a person or an organisation in Moreton Bay region for an award. The categories are: Citizen of the Year (individuals) Young Citizen of the Year (individuals) Sports Person of the Year (individuals)

Young Sports Person of the Year (individuals) Environmental Achievement of the Year (individuals or groups) Special Achievement of the Year (individuals or groups) Community Event of the Year (individuals or groups) Cultural Award of the Year (individuals or groups) The award celebrations will be held on Wednesday, 21 January 2009, at the Redcliffe Cultural Centre, in Downs St, Redcliffe. Caboolture East residents will soon see their ideas become reality as council begins beautification and improvement works in their neighbourhood.
Projects include upgrading of footpaths, improvements to Rafting Ground and Collins Street parks, an amenities block for the well-used Wallace St North Park and community art initiatives. The first stage of a Lagoon Creek trail and the development of a community space across from the McKean Street shops are also planned.

Late last year, council surveyed residents on what they felt was needed to improve their neighbourhood and then drew up a schedule of works based on the feedback received. Funding from the Department of Housings Community Renewal program is helping make the initiatives a reality. There will be more consultation for specific projects in the near future. For more information Caboolture East residents should contact councils Caboolture District Office on 5433 3000.

Help reduce waterway pollution

Soil erosion from building sites can be a major source of sediment pollution in our waterways.

A single building block can lose up to four truckloads of soil in one storm. Washed from the sites into stormwater drains, this sediment can cause flooding by blocking drainage pipes. It can also affect the water quality and fish stocks in our creeks and Moreton Bay.

However there are things you can do to reduce erosion and sediment. These are: Minimise disturbance when excavating Install a sediment barrier Connect home stormwater pipes as soon as possible

Provide a gravel entry and exit point for your site Store sand and soil stockpiles behind sediment barriers and away from drains and gutters. For further information contact council on 3283 0233.
