Want to know a bit more about your natural surrounds and treat the family to an outing? Moreton Bay regions environment centres have heaps to offer.
Osprey House Environmental Centre, on the banks of the Pine River at Dohles Rocks Road, is only a few minutes from the Bruce Highway. Boardwalks through mangroves and coastal forest lead visitors to a birdhide, amphitheatre, observation deck and educational display centre. A purpose built nesting platform is currently being used by a pair of ospreys and a camera installed above the nest relays their movements to a monitor inside the display centre. Popular with schools and tertiary institutions, Osprey House also welcomes day visitors who will learn about mangroves, mosquitoes, dugongs, raptors and wader birds and even worm farming. There are picnic and barbecue facilities accessible any time and the educational display centre is open daily from 10am to 4pm, except Mondays. On Sunday, 31 August, Osprey House will host the Lowlands Festival that involves entertainment, workshops and guided tours from 11am to 3pm. Kumbartcho Sanctuary, at Bunya Pine Court, Eatons Hill, is set on six hectares of eucalypt and rainforest habitat along the South Pine Riverbank. The sanctuary includes a lagoon with a birdhide for nature watching and paths that meander through revegetated areas. Theres a playground and barbecue area as well as a community plant nursery, environment centre and community hall. The sanctuary is open daily from 7am to 7pm and the nursery within the sanctuary operates Thursdays and Fridays from 9am to 3pm and Saturdays from 8am to noon. Further north, at 150 Rowley Road on the outskirts of Burpengary, is the Caboolture Region Environmental Education Centre, known as CREEC. Surrounded by 18 hectares of lowland rainforest next to Burpengary Creek, the centre highlights how to care for the environment. CREEC focuses on promoting environmental best practice and showcases the technology used to effectively harness solar and renewable energy. Bookings are essential for groups or individuals wanting specific tours, workshops, talks or information. Self-guided walks can be taken at any time. If youre a dog owner, you may have noticed some changes to registration renewal notices.
Council has realigned its registration fees so that theyre the same for all dogs no matter where they live in the Moreton Bay region. It now costs $74 a year to re-register male and female dogs and $24 to re-register desexed dogs. Theres a concession rate of $60 for entire male and female dogs and $20 for desexed dogs. To encourage dog owners to register their pets, all new dog registrations for 2008/09 will be charged at the desexed rate. However, renewals will be at the full rate unless council is provided proof that the dog has been desexed. There are also changes to fees for declared dangerous and restricted dogs. Details of registrations, permits, concession availability and a full schedule of charges are available on councils website at www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au Registrations were due by 30 June in Caboolture and Redcliffe districts, but Pine Rivers district dog owners will continue to renew their registrations on an anniversary basis. A late fee of $20 will apply for overdue fees. Dogs must be registered once they are three months old. Registered dogs are provided with lifetime tags, which are used by council to help reunite you with your pet if it is lost or impounded. Nobody likes the idea of a pet separated from its owner, and council will waive the release fee on dogs reclaimed from its animal shelters the first time they are impounded. However, repeat offenders will be charged to reclaim their animals.
y Planning. Council continues to work closely with existing businesses and local business groups to achieve a united approach towards future development and planning across our region. The business and industry prospectus is available on request from Moreton Bay Regional Council.
