Welcome to the Coach Development Programme Information Pack

Thank you for your enquiry regarding the Coach Development Programme (CDP), which is the new UCI education programme for coaches. This information pack includes all of the details you may need to understand the structure, length and content of the training, the programmes syllabus, as well as the application form you will need to complete to enrol on the programme. This pack includes:

To enrol on a course: choose the course you want to attend from the Course Programme remove the relevant forms from Section 2 of this pack you must complete a Course Application Form and Coach Profile complete the relevant forms and return them to the address on the Course Application Form and Coach Profile. About the Coach Development Programme

The Coach Development Programme


he Coach Development Programme (CDP) Is designed to provide coaches with the opportunity
to study and practice all aspects of Road and Track coaching under the expert guidance of the World Cycling Centre team, in Aigle, Switzerland. The programme is designed to challenge current thinking and practices, as well as increasing levels of knowledge and expertise in all areas of coaching.

The CDP is aimed at people who are currently coaching, either with their National Team or with National level riders. The knowledge gained from this qualification will allow them to develop as a coach in multiple rolesfrom working with talented young riders through to elite level cyclist looking to compete at a world level. The CDP is split into three qualifications: UCI Level 1 Coaching Certificate The Level 1 Coaching Certificate focuses on the foundations of coaching. The knowledge that is gained on this course is fundamental to ensuring coaching is appropriate for the riders. The programme covers the fundamentals of coaching Track and Road. UCI Level 2 Coaching Certificate The Level 2 Coaching Certificate moves on from the fundamentals learned at Level 1 and focuses on the components required to assist a rider when training for performance. You will be equipped with the skills and knowledge required to develop competitive riders in Track and Road. UCI Coaching Diploma The UCI Coaching Diploma is the highest coaching qualification and will require the coach to display excellent coaching skills across the spectrum of Track and Road.

Course Dates The CDP is delivered over a consecutive period of eight weeks at the World Cycling Centre in Aigle, Switzerland. It is not possible to split attendance over several courses. The full 2012 programme is:

Programme Delivery
The delivery format of the UCI CDP qualification includes a mixture of tutor led learning based in a classroom environment and practical experience gained alongside the professional coaching staff at the WCC. It is anticipated that the tutor led learning and the practical coaching experience will comprise of approximately: Tutor Led Learning: 170hrs* Outside of these hours it is expected that coaches will need to complete independent, self directed learning to successfully meet the requirements of the course. All coaches will be provided with a complete set of supporting resources, which should be used as a central source of information throughout the course. It is estimated that students may need to complete the following number of self directed learning hours: Self Directed Learning: 70hrs* Throughout the programme, coaches will receive feedback on their progression and completed assessments. All feedback will be designed to maximise their development and progression within the programme and assist with the successful attainment of the UCI Coaching Diploma. * Number of hours are estimates and intended to be indicative only

Programme Content
The CDP is composed of theoretical and practical components. The theoretical sessions are comprised of the following sessions:

Session 1: Coaching Principles and Safety- An introduction to the principles of coaching, the role of the cycling coach and establishing safe, effective coaching sessions. Session 2: Delivering Coaching Sessions This session will look to develop essential coaching skills for when delivering coaching sessions, whether it may be with individuals or groups. Session 3: Coaching Specific Groups (1)- An introduction to coaching children and para-cycling, this session explores the varying approaches to coaching specific groups and the implications of the different groups upon your coaching. Session 4: Developing athletes Coaches will explore the elements of long term rider development. Session 5: Good Coaching Practice This session explores acceptable behaviours for coaches, identifying a code of behaviour for coaches to follow and responding to suspicions of abuse. Session 6: Track Coaching (1) An introduction to Track Cycling and the implications for coaching. Session 7: Road and Time Trial Coaching (1) An introduction to Road and Time Trial and the implications for coaching. Session 8: Equipment (1) - Coaches will explore the use and selection of equipment for Track and Road and Time Trial. Session 9: Training Theory: Principles of Conditioning--- An introduction to the principles of conditioning and the implications for their use within cycling coaching. Session 10: Training Theory: Planning Training This session explores the importance of planning training and how to plan training, including the use of macro, meso and micro cycles.

Session 11: Training Theory: Prescribing Training- Following on from the principles of conditioning and the process of planning, this session focuses on the how to prescribing training that is specific to each individual. Session 12: Training Theory: Event Demands and Analysing Performance Coaches will focus on the analysis of event demands and performance benchmarks through application of knowledge Session 13: Nutrition Coaches will investigate the role of nutrition in riders training and how nutrition can maximise performance. Session 14: Coach & Rider Partnership- Development of an effective and appropriate coach / rider partnership, including identification of the roles of both the coach and rider; the process for rider profiling and ethical issues when planning and prescribing training for a rider. Session 15: Training Theory: Cross Training- An analysis of the types of cross-training riders can incorporate into training and how they can benefit riders. Session 16: Coaching Specific Groups (2)- This module focuses on the considerations of prescribing specific, individual training to specific groups, including children, women, para-cycling and masters riders. Session 17: Training Theory: Coaching with PowerHow to effectively incorporate the use of power meters into your coaching. Session 18: Techniques for Coaching- This session will take a close look at the development of skill and technique for riders, as well as looking at advanced coaching skills. Session 19: Equipment and Position on the Bike (2)- A close examination of modern equipment and the considerations surrounding selection of equipment for coaches and riders, and the implications of technical regulations. This module also examines how coaches can work with riders to find the most effective position on the bike. Session 20: Delivering Advanced Coaching Sessions-- This module explores how coaches can develop specific sessions that teach advanced technical skills and tactical knowledge. Session 21: Coaching in Specific Environments Coaches will explore the implications of coaching and racing in different environments and how they can maximise performance in training and racing. Session 22 & 23: Track Coaching (2)- These sessions look for coaches to apply all of the theoretical knowledge that has been gained over the programme so far and apply it specifically to Track racing. This session will focus on both endurance and sprint. Session 24 & 25 : Road and Time Trial Coaching (2)-These sessions look for coaches to apply all of the theoretical knowledge that has been gained over the programme so far and apply it specifically to road racing. This session will focus on both road race and time trial. Session 26: Fatigue & Recovery - This session focuses on the dynamics of fatigue in relation to performance and a review of recovery techniques that maximise recovery and the effects of fatigue. Session 27: The Travelling Athlete: Coaches will consider the implications of travelling on athletic performance and the strategies to minimise disruption to performance. Session 28: Tapering for Performance: This session considers the strategies to optimise performance leading up to a major performance goal with the use of tapering strategies. Session 29: Coach Led Racing: An advanced coaching technique that creates specific coaching sessions that focus on the development of race specific tactical / technical skills. Session 30: Reflective Practice: Coaches will be introduced to the process of reflecting on their own coaching performance and using this reflection to develop their practices to even higher levels.

Please note that the exact programme delivery is subject to modification and is provided to coaches on the first day of each course.

Assessment
The UCI CDP requires that you have an understanding of the principles, practices and ethics of coaching cycling. You will be assessed via a number of different assessment methods. These include knowledge tests, assignments, observations of practical coaching and an assigned coaching project. The Coach Education Manager will assist students understand the assessment requirements, the assessment criteria for each assessment and the programme of assessment will be. The following methods will be used to assess candidates for the UCI CDP: Practical coaching performance in two cycling disciplines Written questioning of knowledge and understanding Production of assignments / project work Presentation of an assigned coaching project Candidates who are successful in all aspects of assessment will be awarded the UCI Coaching Diploma.

Course Price
The total price of the course is CHF 8,000 and is inclusive of all expenses during the stay at the WCC. This includes accommodation and full board, participation in the course, teaching material, health and accident insurance, pocket money and travel to any races you may attend with the WCC teams. Travel from your country to the WCC and return is not included in the cost. For course payment, we do hope that your Federation will be able to invest or we encourage you to request a scholarship, either to Olympic Solidarity or to your national or even regional government who might be interested in the development of future champions in your country. Below is an explanation of the route you must follow to obtain Olympic Solidarity funding.
