1.5.4 Stream NMEA 0183 sentences

Overview

Zeno Connect supports a number of protocols for communicating with GPS receivers. One of them is the NMEA 0183 version 2.0 standard protocol defined by the National Marine Electronics Association. The NMEA 0183 standard definition is available from http://www.nmea.org.

NMEA 0183 standard

The NMEA 0183 standard defines sentences that are used to transmit data. These sentences consist of printable ASCII text (plus carriage return and line feed). Each sentence consists of the following data sequence: A $ always starts an NMEA 0183 sentence. A two-letter talker IDfor example, GP for global positioning system receiver.

Leica Zeno Connect and Zeno Tools Quick Start Tutorial

Page 17/41

A three-letter sentence IDfor example, GGA. Several data fields separated by commas. An optional checksum to terminate the sentence and a carriage return or line feed. The NMEA 0183 standard allows individual manufacturers to define proprietary sentence formats. These sentences start with $P, then a 3-letter manufacturer ID, followed by data from the manufacturer that follows the general format of the standard sentences. A sample NMEA 0183 sentence for the GPS fix data might be as follows: $GPGGA,121505,4807.038,N,01131.324,E,1,08,0.9,133.4,M,46.9,M, , *42 Entry $GPGGA 121505 4807.038,N 01131.324,E Description Is the NMEA 0183 sentence ID for the GPS fix data. Is the fix taken at 12:15:05 UTC. Is latitude 48 07.038' N. Is longitude 11 31.324' E. The fix quality can have a value between 0 and 3, defined as follows: 0 = no fix 1 = GPS or standard positioning service (SPS) fix 2 = DGPS fix 3 = Precise positioning service (PPS) fix Is the number of satellites being tracked. Is the horizontal dilution of position (HDOP). Is the altitude, in meters, above mean sea level. Is the height of the geoid (mean sea level) above the WGS84 ellipsoid. Is the time in seconds since the last DGPS update. Is the DGPS station ID number. Is the checksum field.

08 0.9 133.4,M 46.9,M (empty field) (empty field) *42

Leica Zeno Connect and Zeno Tools Quick Start Tutorial

Page 18/41

NMEA 0183 version 3.0

The NMEA 0183 version 3.0 standard adds the following additional values for the $GPGGA fix quality, which Zeno Field recognizes: 4 = Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) fixed solution 5 = Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) float solution 6 = Estimated dead reckoning 7 = Manual input mode 8 = Simulation mode

Zeno Connect streams

Zeno Connect streams the following NMEA 0183 version 2.0 or higher sentences: Sentence $GPGGA $GPGLL $GPGSA $GPGSV $GPRMC Description GPS fix data Geographic position, latitude and longitude GPS Dilution of Precision (DOP) and active satellites GPS satellites in view Recommend minimum specific GPS/TRANSIT data

On a CS10/CS15 device: In Zeno Connect you can also define the output interval (1 sec, 2 sec, 5 sec and 10 sec) as well as the Output Port (COM9, COM1, rd or any Bluetooth port). When defining COM9, a 3 party application installed on the Zeno 10/15 can use NMEA messages. When using COM1, NMEA is streamed out via Serial or Lemo port to another PC, such as a TabletPC. Then another application, like Leica MobileMatriX, can use these messages to get positions from the Zeno 10/15. This NMEA output can also be done via a Bluetooth port. In Data View, you can see the streamed NMEA messages. On a CS 25: For streaming NMEA data via Zeno Connect to a 3rd party application or MobileMatriX on the same device, you have to select port 66 (or the next free port if port 66 is already used on the device). For streaming NMEA data via Zeno Connect to a 3rd party
