College announces new department chairs

THE COLLEGE of Commerce and Business Administration has recently completed its new set of academic officials with Mr. Celso Noel D. Aban, Mr. Ronald B. Paguta, and Asst. Prof. Riaz Benjamin appointed as the new department chairs for the Entrepreneurship, Business Economics, and Business Administration (B.A.) Departments, respectively. As the new department heads, their primary goal is to develop and hone the students to become competent business professionals in the corporate field. Mr. Aban said he plans on directly helping the students become entrepreneurs through a step-by-step process. Basically there are three courses of action that will help the students to become entrepreneurs. First, teach them the basics, and then build the business with them. Lastly, help them grow the enterprise. He also mentioned that faculty development of the Entrepreneurship Department is one of his objectives and that it could be attained through having programs like Entrepreneurship Training, Exponential Learning Workshops, use of educational technology, and business for the faculty. Likewise, Mr. Paguta said that his main objective is to provide meaningful and practical Business Economics education which would enable graduates to meet the demands of the workplace. We plan on facilitating new trainings and retooling of the members

Honor Graduates down by four, no Summa Cum Laude for Quadricentennial Batch
by Charldon L. Tan with reports from Audric Bryant T. Co and Philip D.C. Rutaquio
Varying trends in number of honor students per major For the past two years, the Universitys data shows varying trends in the number of students with Latin honors in their respective majors. The College experienced a decline of four honor students as compared to the last years batch. In Financial Management, there was a sharp increase of 18 honor students (29 Cum Laudes and two Magna Cum Laudes) from last batchs 13. As for Business Economics, the number of honor students (three Cum Laudes and one Magna Cum Laude) was cut by half from the previous batchs eight. Meanwhile, the Marketing Department produced only one honor student (Cum Laude) against last years 18. The Entrepreneurship Department was left with no honor graduate from previous years two. Lastly, one honor student (Cum Laude) graced the Human Resource Management Departments pioneer batch.

of the department. We would also promote research for both the faculty and the students to be able to build a linkage with other schools and economic institutions, he said. Mr. Paguta added that the faculty should not forget their purpose as educators and should work handin-hand in the formation of great business leaders. Moreover, Asst. Prof. Benjamin stated that his plans for B.A. include filling the gap between the academe and the industry which can be accomplished by hiring more practitioners and motivating the students to participate in various competitions and workshops. Also, with the cooperation of the Marketing, Finance, and Human Resource coordinators, he aims to uplift the spirits of the students and equip them well for the business industry. We want to encourage each faculty member to get involved in educating the students wholeheartedly, he said. Mr. Aban graduated from UST Faculty of Engineering with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree and attained his Masters degree in Entrepreneurship in the Asian Institute of Management (AIM). Meanwhile, Mr. Benjamin graduated from The University of the Punjab in Pakistan with Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science degree and Masters degree in Business Management. Mr. Paguta, on the other hand, graduated from De La Salle University (DLSU) with a Bachelor of Secondary Education in

Altarejos, Blanco passes CSS licensure exam

by Jose Angelo S. Gonda Blanco Altarejos
MR. ANTHONY Altarejos, D.B.A. and Mr. Dante Blanco, M.B.A., C.P.A. shall now be adding a CSS title to their full names after successfully completing the special course and passing the final licensure examinations for Certified Securities Specialists (CSS). Earning a CSS title requires finishing a five-month annual program offered by the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) which aims to provide aspiring investors with sufficient knowledge in the Philippine capital market industry. Every year, PSE ties up with a partner university in order to hold the special program. Last year, UST was chosen to host. The entire program comprises of 13 modules encompassing advanced courses in Finance, Economics, Statistics, and Accounting. According to Mr. Blanco, taking up the program is like taking up a college degree. Youll also get quizzes or exams every after eight hours of each module and you will be graded for every output. Kaya lang, it will be completed for only five months, he said. Aside from the course requirements, participants are also to take the Final Licensure Examination which serves as the primary determinant if the CSS title shall be granted. The passing rate for module exams is 75% while the passing rate for the Final

In order to avoid a decrease in Latin honors, Asst. Dean Mary Hildence T. Baluyot advised that students should have a philosophy of excellence so that they could qualify for honors. Students should not settle for anything less, they should only settle for the best, she said. She also suggested that students should be internally motivated. Learning is an internal motivation. If the student has this as primary factor, I am sure that not only one but many students will excel in class, she added. In a separate interview, Dean Ma. Socorro P. Calara explained that the students who graduated with honors have an advantage if they plan to work for the government. They [the honor students] can do government service without taking a professional licensure examination. Honor Graduates | page 2

COMMERCE STUDENTS are bound to have a new Commerce Audio-Visual Room (AVR) experience as the Facilities Management Office (FMO), in coordination with the Deans Office, renovated the AVR last summer vacation. We replaced the chairs, rehabilitated the platform and inayos namin yung tiles. Also, with the Deans approval, we repainted the walls to a color thats subtle. Masyado kasing dark yung dati, said Archt. Enrique Sta. Maria, officer-in-charge of the renovation. He further explained that the AVRs new theater seats came from the recently overhauled Rizal Auditorium. Due to the continuous increase of the students, we had to comply with the request from the AB Department to transform the Rizal Conference Hall into four additional classrooms. Then, we just decided to transfer the existing theater seats from Rizal [Auditorium] to your Commerce AVR, he said. Meanwhile, Asst. Dean Mary Hildence Baluyot found the AVR renovation uplifting to the College. I am very positive about the AVR renovation and I hope that the students would be able to appreciate the new look, especially yung theater seats na nilagay sa AVR, she said. Also, Asst. Dean Baluyot mentioned the installment of ClosedCircuit Television (CCTV) camera units throughout the St. Raymunds Building as part of the universitys efforts in strengthening the security all throughout the campus. She clarified that the CCTV

COMPLAINTS FROM students taking the On-the-Job Training (OJT) program last summer prompted Commerce and Business Administration Student Council (CBASC) President Jordan A. Tapales to send a letter of complaint last April 11 to Dean Ma. Socorro P. Calara spelling out the difficulties they experienced with the application process and requirements. The issues included changes made in the practicum documents such as the Temporary Transcript of Records (TOR) and the Practicum Confirmation and Acceptance form; problems with the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) forms of both the school and the company; failure to disseminate information about these changes; and the inability of the Commerce Website (commerce.ust.edu.ph) to provide up-to-date information and later versions of the practicum documents. Before the end of the second semester last academic year, the students applying for practicum were asked to submit their registration forms together with their Temporary TOR which only included their first semester grades for A.Y. 2010-2011. However, after the final exams, the students were again asked to pass a new Temporary TOR, which should contain both their first and second semester gradesthus costing them another Php 65. Practicum Coordinator Prof. Helena Ma. F. Cabrera stressed that the grades for the first semester were not

enough to prove that the students did finish their third year; thus it gave rise to the need for the second semester grades. Also, a few days before the start of their OJT, the students were required to pass a revised Practicum Confirmation and Acceptance form, which is a combination of the two old documents: the Application for Practicum and the original Practicum Confirmation and Acceptance letter. Both had already been required to be submitted at the start of the practicum application. According to an officer of the Thomasian Junior Association for People Management (TJAPM) who chose to remain anonymous, several students from the same major complained about the sudden change in the document because it happened right in the middle of the practicum application period. Pinagsama yong dalawang document noong peak at kalagitnaan ng pag-aapply [ng mga students], he said. But according to Prof. Cabrera, several students were excused from passing the revised document since they were able to submit the two original documents beforehand. These mishaps caused confusion among the students and the College administration. Moreover, according to Tapales letter of complaint, the students were not immediately informed as to how many MOAs should be submitted in cases where a group of students applied for the same company for their internship. Likewise, there were instances when the MOAs of the school and the company were inconsistent with each other and had to be revised. According to Prof. Cabrera, the school had to put the welfare and interests of its students first; hence, the changes were implemented. Also, according to an officer of the Economics Society (EcoSoc) who also opted to keep her identity hidden, students from their major had the most difficulty with the dissemination of information regarding the changes in the documents. Halos lahat nagkaproblema Mayroong ibang hindi makapagstart agad ng OJT kasi paiba-iba ng format [yung documents], tapos kung kanikanino lang namin naririnig yung tungkol sa mga changes, she stated. As a result, Prof. Cabrera called for a meeting with all the third year class presidents of Economics, Financial Management, and Human Resource Development Management last March 26 to clarify the 17-step practicum guidelines and the procedures for the new document. Amid the criticisms against the OJT program, Prof. Cabrera said it was Tapales who requested for the drafting of the new document two weeks before the start of the practicum. Biglang nag-request si Jordan Tapales na yong document namin ay baguhin only a few days before start ng OJT, para maiwasan ang redundancy, she said. However, Tapales denied the allegations and said that it was the College administration that asked for the change through the Practicum Coordinator. The Admin initiated it. Ang alam ko si Dr. Cabrera

ang nagpalit ng iyon... Never kong ginawa iyon, he said. As to the Commerce Website being outdated, Prof. Cabrera said it was the fault of the Sto. Tomas E-Service Providers (STePs) that led to the failure of the immediate uploading of the new document on the Colleges website. Bago ma-upload [ang mga kailangang documents] dumadaan muna ito sa STePs... May inaayos ang STePs noong time na yon kaya umabot hanggang Holy Week, she clarified. Because of all these difficulties, some students were able to start their OJT a few days later than the others. Therefore, in order to complete the 300hour requirement, which is in accordance with the Commission on Higher Educations (CHED) Memorandum Order no. 39 of 2006, they had to continue their OJT after school hours. As to the confusion and problems that the students faced, Tapales said that both the administration and the students are responsible for it. Ang mali ng Admin, pa-iba-iba ng requirements, or inconsistencyYong mali naman ng students, hindi sila nagbabasa ng guidelines, or hindi nila gaano [iniintindi] he said. Meanwhile, Dean Calara explained that the College tried to simplify the requirements and that there are no definite rules as to the implementation of the practicum guidelines. She clarified that the College administration can only facilitate and help the students with their requirements and improve the application process for the semesters to come.

Also, as retrieved from the PSE website, students can enroll, although they would not credit the title until they graduate from their Bachelors Degree. Furthermore, Mr. Blanco emphasized the benefits of becoming a CSS. According to him, finishing the program will give you a good background of the stock market and other investments. Like for example you can already recommend investors on what firms are good for investing by analyzing what companies are profitable, and what are not, he stated. Also, Mr. Altarejos further said that the program will provide various techniques for the work field. It makes us more competent for the corporate field. Although for me, I cannot practice it in investing stocks since I am in the academe, it will be a very good foundation especially for aspiring investors, he said. For this year, PSE will be conducting another batch starting this coming August. Interested participants may inquire from the UST Center for Continuing Professional Education (CCPED) of the Graduate School.

CCSC changes to CBASC

by Patricia May A. Casin
NEW OFFICERS, new name. The official student governing body of the College, formerly known as the College of Commerce Student Council (CCSC), shall now be officially known as the College of Commerce and Business Administration Student Council (CBASC) starting this academic year. According to CBASC President Jordan Tapales, their name was changed to align it with the name of the College and to avoid confusion with the UST Central Student Council (CSC). Madalas kasing napagpapalit yung CCSC sa CSC kaya sa pagpalit na ito, mas magiging madali yung identification ngayon sa mga freshmen, he explained. Along with the change, CBASC also introduced its new logo featuring the official colors of the College yellow and black, the Commerce wheel symbolizing business and trading, and the 16 feathers representing the 16 College-based organizations. With CBASCs new distinction comes its new set of plans for this academic year. CBASC Public Relations Officer Ryan Christian Paez introduced a new way of disseminating information to the student body by creating CBASCs official group in Facebook. Nung naging officer ako ng Pre-Com, nakita ko yung need niya [FB group] especially noong first year ako. Kailangan siya lalo ng mga first and second years kasi baguhan pa sila sa College, he said. Paez stressed that the CBASC Facebook group promotes an online interaction between the students and the council. Noong Miting de Avance namin, I also emphasized that Im not here just to help you [students] but also to build relationships, he stated. In addition, CBASC gave a gist of their events for this year, namely the Commerce Fiesta patterned from the Quadri Fiesta and the Business Plan Competition wherein teams will have to present their

idea of marketing a product or service. The plan shall be critiqued by panelists from the College. Paez explained that the latter is the most course-related project for all the degree programs in the College. In here [College of Commerce and Business Administration], we are training ourselves for our future jobs. Dito [Business Plan Competition], walang competition among sa mga majors dahil sa bawat team, well represented ang lahat ng majors kahit mga Pre-com, he assured. Furthermore, Tapales claimed that despite the change of the councils name, they are still the same student body. Same SC pa rin kami pero we can say na yung approach namin is gawin natin to - hindi gawin mo. Hindi kami nag-de-demand, because we see our work as

The Dean also mentioned of the honor students competitive advantage in the industry. When you join the private sector, they also recognize your Latin Honors as reflected in your transcript [of records]. Initially, it counts in your personal relationship [and] it also gives a better chance of having a faster promotion, she added. The 2010-2011 Solemn Investiture which paved way for 1,057 student graduates was held last March 29 at the Philippine International Convention Center. Financial Management major Regina Coeli Tan (Batch 2009-2010) was the last Summa Cum Laude graduate with a GWA of 1.117. Thor

Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment Rating: 3.5/5

GODS ARE known for having perfect wisdom, power, might, and physique. But what happens if they turn into powerless human beings? This is what Marvel Entertainments latest addition to its fine roster of superhero movies is all about: Thor, the enthralling tale of how the God of Thunder came to be the mighty Marvel superhero. Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the eldest son of Odin (Anthony Hopkins), is to be hailed new King of Asgard but the ceremony is interrupted when the Frost Giants abruptly infiltrate the kingdom. Thor, being the arrogant and impulsive God of Thunder, decides to travel to the Frost Giants realm, Jotunheim, to confront their leader despite his fathers disapproval. His unwanted visit eventually ignites a clashdestroying the truce between the two kingdoms. As punishment for endangering the peace on their kingdom, Odin takes away all of Thors powers and banishes him to Earth, along with his hammer, the Mjolnir, which is now protected by a spell that only permits a worthy being to wield it. With his new found life on earth, Thor must again prove himself to be the rightful wielder of the Mjolnir in order to be hailed worthy as new King of Asgard. A movie adaptation of the Marvel comic book, Thor is a visual delight with an unusual and interesting storyline that will keep you glued all throughout the film. It is not your average superhero flick where a mere human would gain powers and eventually save mankind. Rather, the film presented the vice-versa. It showed how a god would handle living on Earth as a powerless being. However, its plot doesnt offer anything newmaking it a typical mainstream film thats showcasing the life of another new superhero. The story was too simple that it seemed like it was just crafted for profit rather than to create a piece of art. As compared to Iron Man (2008) and The Incredible Hulk (2008), the third instalment of the Avengers series is not well-known to non-Marvel fans. But the filmmakers were able to infuse it with a modern touch. It has this compelling storyline and striking cinematography, rivalling that of the past well-made superhero movies. Undeniably, Thor is equally entertaining and actionpacked as compared to the two previous Marvel movies. Despite being renowned for directing adaptations of Shakespearean plays such as Henry V (1989), Much Ado about Nothing (1993), and Hamlet (1996), Kevin Branagh went against the odds and took a chance to direct Marvels latest superhero offering. This strange move from an acclaimed director of drama has raised eyebrows all over the movie industry but Branagh still delivered. He was able to make the film into a great blend of drama, humor, and action that will keep the viewers hooked from start to finish. Playing the title role, newbie actor Chris Hemsworth (Star Trek, A Perfect Getaway) did a terrific job in acting as the arrogant God of Thunder. With his great physique and god-like presence, Hemsworth looked like a true Asgardian that it was as if he was born to play the role. Starring as Hemsworths leading lady is Academy award winner Natalie Portman (Star Wars, Black Swan) who unsurprisingly delivered a great performance in portraying Thors love interest, Jane Foster. Portman and Hemsworths tandem had an appealing chemistry that they were certainly a cute couple to watch. Furthermore, the film was also backed up by an impressive set of supporting actors including 1991 Academy Award Best Actor Anthony Hopkins who greatly embodied the role of Odin. Also, Tom Hiddleston, having his cunning and devious look, was fit for his role of being Loki, the God of Mischief. Another notable character is Janes co-worker Darcy Lewis, played by Kat Dennings, who frequently gave one-liner jokes that will make you laugh throughout the film. However, being a mainstream Marvel superhero movie, its noticeable how

Bizarre sci-fi film garnished with an extraordinary slice of life

feel the excitement and the suspense whenever the alien jumps and attacks the people of the town. Nevertheless, the film has a spectacular script though it has a tendency to drown you with its long dialogues. And it isnt what everybody would expect from a mystery-themed movie since many abstract factors like friendship and love issues were tackled. Thus, due to simultaneous shifts in the movies angles, the plot was hard to follow. Also, the film diverted too much on the social aspect of the film that it lost its intellectual appeal. Moreover, the alien, which should be the one who could turn the movie into a really extreme mystery sci-fi movie, became just an accessory and only a minor part of the story. Even though theres nothing wrong with the portrayal of the main characters, its inappropriate and very unlikely to see children solve such a mysterious case. A normal 15-year old boy would usually run if he saw a monster attacking people. However, the viewer could feel the awkwardness whenever Joe expresses his love towards Alice. I cant remember the minors of 1979 being that aggressive. It could be more realistic and believable if adults played the roles. Newbie actor Courtney was able to embody the role of a courageous teenager who dares to risk his life by talking to the extraterrestrial creature. Meanwhile, the 2-year-old Lucy from I am Sam was a good match for Courtney. Dainard befits her role as a matured girl and she looks good in every angle of the camera. One of the best things in the movie is its camera effects. The scene where the train crashes and metal fragments ricochet all over the place gives you a thrilling vibe that could make you feel like youre the one avoiding them. Also, the aliens use of its magnetic power is a wow factor for the viewers. Although the movie is dull because of its long dialogues and some irrelevant scenes, Super 8 teaches a very important lesson to everybody: how to prioritize solving problems between family and friends instead of boggling your mind on solving the vagueness of the situation. You may not comprehend mysteries of life but you will learn how to value friends, and your family. All sci-fi fanatics may appreciate this film but common viewers are unlikely to be pleased about it. Super 8 became just a sugar-coated movie topped with family, friendship, and love issues with a wandering monster on the side. Paolo Kris T. Adriano

it was entirely made for pure entertainment. As expected, the graphics were astounding but there were a handful of scenes which were exaggerated. One is a scene where Jane was running towards Thor in slow motion. The scene became too cheesy that instead of being dramatic, it looked lifeless and funny at the same time. Moreover, the number of Thors action scenes fell shortmaking it very disappointing for a film about the mighty God of Thunder. Also, a major loophole on the story is the farfetched romance between Thor and Jane. The story of how the God of Thunder would fall in love with a human being in a matter of days was not established well. Instead of love, it seemed that what they felt for each other was more of infatuation. Nevertheless, Thor is one film that is definitely a cut above the rest and up a notch against other superhero films. Jampacked by intense fighting scenes and comedic punch lines, Thor is a film children and the child-like would truly find exciting to watch. Following the footsteps of successful Marvel superhero films, it has managed to establish a name for itself and it surely wont disappoint the avid fans. It may have fallen short in terms of action and uniqueness but with its massive dose of entertainment, Thor proves to be another Marvel masterpiece. Philip D.C. Rutaquio

Literally, Super 8 is a video camera used to create amateur videos and low quality movies. But what happens if you happened to bring it in the middle of a disaster? It could be a strong evidence to unravel the truth behind a supernatural phenomenon. Set in 1979, the movie starts at a local steel mill on Ohio where a factory worker records the number of days from the last accident that happened. 784 days was changed to 1 day since the calamity just happened yesterday. The young protagonist, Joe Lamb (Joel Courtney), have lost his mother on the said event. Four months later, Joe, together with Alice Dainard (Ella Fanning) and his friends, decides to shoot a low-budget zombie movie using the Super 8 film. While shooting a scene in an old train depot, the camera was able to capture a truck crashing towards the train. At first, they think it was just an accident but as they start watching the recording on the Super 8, they conclude that it wasnt. As they try to uncover the truth, different bonds and relationships are about to be tested. Director J.J. Abrams spiced up the movie by adding an extraterrestrial creature on the plot. Unlike Armageddon (1998), and Mission: Impossible III (2006), Abrams didnt bring something new and unique. He only improved in the aspect wherein viewers could relate more on their social relationship. Also, the story is like a zigzag road having the intensity of excitement going up and down, up and down, up and down. You could only

Glee Cast

Glee: The Music, Volume 5 (Columbia Records) Rating 3/5

The fifth volume doesnt necessarily get five stars

CALLING ALL Gleeks! The new Glee album is here filled with fun-loving, catchy melodious tracks. And if you just cant get enough of the music of this overly popular, musical comedy-drama, then this album is perfect for you. However, there are some tracks that will make you wonder if the whole album was done correctly. Recalling the classics and dancing to the modern beats, the cast of Glee covers different genres, styles, and compositionmixing songs like Michael Jacksons hit Thriller with Heads will Roll by Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Aside from remakes, the album introduces their first ever original composition Get It Right, a ballad made exclusively for the role of Lea Michele as Rachel Berry and Loser Like Me, performed by the entire glee cast. Glee: The Music, Volume 5 is the sixth soundtrack album released by the cast from its second season. It was created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan along with executive producer Brad Falchuk. One of the featured songs on the album is the mash-up Thriller/Heads Will Roll. Viewers were blown away in the Halloween episode of the series because of its genuinely good, cringe-worthy rhythm, and performance. This track is reminiscent of the shows conventional tunes, two classics from utterly different genres mashed up and made into an amusing dance tune. Of course, a Glee album wouldnt be complete without a couple of hits from Justin Bieber like Baby and Somebody to Love. I wasnt that excited to hear another Bieber song, but the cast made Somebody to Love sound more

interesting by making it more upbeat. Mark Salling (Noah Puck Puckerman), Chord Overstreet (Sam Evans), and Kevin McHales (Artie Abrams) voices were to die for. Sadly, Lea Micheles rendition of Katy Perrys Firework wasnt as good as the original. It was one of her most disappointing versions considering that she has her own set of titanium-plated pipes. The original composition Get It Right wasnt a good track either, particularly because the melody sounds like a rip-off of some Kelly Clarksons songs. What a shame, considering the Glee casts potential and amazing talents. Meanwhile, Academy award winner Gwyneth Paltrow returns as a guest star for three additional songs covering songs like Princes Kiss, the Dixie Chicks Landslide and Joan Jetts iconic song Do You Want to Touch Me (Oh Yeah). It was also a delight to hear Darren Criss (Blaine Anderson) and Micheles version of Human Leagues Dont You Want Me. Although the mix of the track was terrible and Micheles voice was poorly auto tuned, their voices still make a great match. Moreover, Glee showed another diva-off by two powerful voices from the cast, Michele and Amber Riley (Mercedes Jones), who made a duet of Take Me or Leave Me from the popular Broadway musical Rent. Their voices were phenomenal as they blend especially towards the climax of the song. Clearly, their cover was one of the best in the album, but like Micheles version of Firework, it lacks the soul that was exhibited by the cast of Rent.

The last track of the album Loser Like Me, is another original that relates well to the shows theme. It wasnt one of the best songs in the album either. Needless to say, Glee should definitely stick to covering more popular songs and mash-ups. Other tracks include renditions of The Zombies 1960s hit Shes Not There, Queens song Fat Bottomed Girls, Sing from American rock band My Chemical Romance, Need You Now, a country song by Lady Antebellum, and P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) by Michael Jackson. Compared to previous Glee albums, there arent as many show tunes even though they were more recognized from singing broadway tunes and golden oldies. It could be that producers wanted to pull in younger listeners and viewers by covering some of modern pop hits. Glee: The Music, Volume 5 album was quite innovative and it was able to offer another clever mix of different songs and upbeat tunes- although it lacks the creativity from the previous albums. However, this album contains mediocre renditions and I really hope that there will be a great deal of improvement in the next album. With this, I guess losers will always get slushies on their faces. Atop the Building with Hues of Orange and Blue
THE BUILDING seems like a 43-floor spaceship which would launch people to safety just in case the Mayan Prophecy comes to fulfillment. As I enter, I see hues of blue which reminds me of the sea, and orange the tangy summer except that I cannot feel it in the middle of May, thanks to the climate change and to my 300-hour internship. I ride a high speed elevator to get to the floor where I was stationed. It had a capacity of 20 people but passengers will not utilize it to the full. I can only count one to ten riders inside sometimes to fifteen when its almost 8:30 a.m. time for work. Maybe people are afraid to get close to each other especially with strangers. And yet, ironically, most elevator passengers have something in common: they work under the same roof (or should I say ship deck) and they are about to be late. Of course, life in the ship deck has only a few bum moments because the crew is always busy in preparation for the day and during those bum moments, I always ponder on my experiences during bus rides. *** Why do most commuters hate sitting with others? Is the world overpopulated with claustrophobics? Is there a new pandemic disease contagious to the five senses? Or is my appearance so sickening that it can induce nausea? And recently, I had just taken into account that women had won their fight for equal rights with men. They now stand tall on their stilettos whenever there are no seats left on the bus. I guess liberty has its issues. I suddenly remembered that I was able to attend Mr. Chivalrys funeral last decade ago back when I was a young boy. Upon sitting on the window side of the bus seat, I noticed a downpour a rare sight during this time of the year. I saw raindrops chasing each other and it is so sad that their lifespan lasts only an erstwhile. After all, who goes first is pointless since every drop will suffer the same fate: their lives end when they succumb to the polluted grounds of Manila and on the skin of the poor souls who forgot their umbrellas, including me. As their remains lie on the ground awaiting the sun to bring them to their final destination, they will only leave a residue. *** Afternoon of May 21, 2011: time for the preparation for takeoff to flee from the expected apocalypse. It was supposed to be the rapture day followed by a great tribulation, so they say. Two receptionists stationed in the front desk: one will be taken, one will remain. Oh, the other one just went to the restroom. Two employees encoding documents: one will be taken but one will remain. Oh, he just took his regular yosi break. Two mobile phones lying on the table the smart phone will be taken, while the cheaper one will be left behind. Reality check. I just remembered that this is the Philippines what do I expect? Four interns in a department three will leave, the other one will remain, finishing the heavier and longer learning challenge laid down on him. Unfortunately, his friends who had the same longer hours to render as him were stuck in the limbo of routinary tasks.

AS FAR as the 3% tuition fee is concerned, UST now ranks sixth among the Philippine universities with the most expensive tuition. This brings up the question of whether or not the University is really giving the students of their moneys worth. And now that everyones talking about that all-seeing eye at the corner of every classroom, is UST really spending on relevant matters? With the apparent move of the University to convert its buildings into Big Brother houses, students now have to keep in mind that every action they do inside the classroom is kept on record. However, because the real purpose behind the ubiquitous installation of CCTV cameras was not disclosed properly, the student body and the faculty have expressed mixed reactions. According to the University administration, these cameras are used for security purposes only. Sadly, the fact that the videos will not be monitored live and will just record the actual occurrences already raises the question of its efficiency. The videos will only be reviewed when someone complains of a loss of valuable/s. What if someone stole something left in the classroom and the owner only realized the loss after a day? With the current system, the victim, so to speak, can only backtrack the videos recorded which might have caught the culprit during the act on tape. Yes, there is solid evidence but if the culprit is not someone from school, then he or she obviously might have already escaped by that time. Furthermore, it is better if the cameras were only installed on the corridors assuming that they were really installed for security. For instance, a stranger walk passed the guards (if the guards were doing their jobs well, then this might not have happened) and was able to enter the building. But could he go do his deed inside the classroom? Not a chance if there are people currently using the room since they would immediately notice the stranger. Stressing the point further, even the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, the bank with the highest security in the country, doesnt have CCTV cameras installed in their facilities but only within their hallways. So how can the security cameras serve their purpose if there is no one to monitor them at all times? Also, if the real reason of the University for installing these cameras is security, why cant they just hire security personnel who are really stern in guarding every building? It is also obvious that the University spent a huge amount just for the installation of these cameras and it would be a waste if they would only be use for security purposes. In fact, the CCTV can help address other anomalies which are left unmonitored such as those professors who do not live up to their duties in teaching the students well. Professors who are lazy in executing their job literally waste the hardearned money of students parents. Why cant the administration see the need for monitoring the inefficiency of some professors? On the other hand, these camera units, being angled directly toward the students, are a direct intrusion of personal privacy. Not that most students have anything to hide to begin with, but the bothering thought that someone (or something) is watching your every action would make the students feel awkward. This may also be considered as an expression of distrust to students. Of course, to fund this questionable project, UST possibly took the needed funds by burdening the students financially with an increase in their tuition and other fees. Hence, the students end up paying for the very thing that violates their privacy. The money could be used for other things which the students could actually enjoy, such as the maintenance of the classroom facilities. The discussion whether or not the CCTV cameras are assets or unnecessary expense is a long one but one thing is for sure: the University owes the students and faculty an explanation as to why they made the installation without proper consultation. This is an issue that cannot simply be swept under the rug known as Management Prerogative.

Brand News
GOOD NEWS and bad news weve all read, heard, and watched them. We eat them thrice a day. Theyre our favorite snack for in-between breaks and sometimes they could kill the cat inside us due to heavily fed-up curiosity. But what makes news thick and thin to the eyes of its readers and writers? What does the word newsworthy mean? And how does news make the world a better place to live in despite the fact that most newspapers and news programs report the art of graft and corruption, sweet-tasting controversies, and the lavishly deterred colors of the world? Among the three fields of writing in the Commerce Journal (CJ), news is the simplest to make. It follows the topsy-turvy format of the inverted pyramid built with blatant facts. It doesnt need highly-decorated and celebrated words found in featureswriting nor the lovey-dovey, bitter memories, and other shape-shifting emotions in poems and stories. But ironically, the simplicity of writing a news article hides its intricacies like getting accurate information from interviews, painting an impartial portrait of an issue, and detaching the writers subjectivity to preserve the objectivity of the news. I speak of this not as a former News Editor but as a writer of all fields. Heres another caveat: a news writer cant control the truth he/she just set free. The shallowness and deepness of news is measured by its newsworthiness. Back when I was assigning news articles to the staff, I would first ask myself, Is this event/ issue newsworthy? Would it be capable of stirring the College in one way or another? Its hard to maintain a balanced distribution of news in the Propaganda. Some might allege that this major organization has more news because most of CJs editors at that time come from this major. Or this news is well-written because the writer is enrolled in this program. These contentions are just possibilities but we cant stop someone from giving his/her opinion. Its his/her prerogative but campus journalism wont cease to exist. Thus, to further acquaint myself with the various ways of news-writing, I regularly read the news articles flashed on the Yahoo! website. One time, Ive read articles about the Kapuso star Jackie Rice fracturing her toe while taping her show and Lady Gaga garnering 10 million followers on Twitter. Both received a readers comment that sounded like this: Kailangan ba talaga itong i-balita? Sometimes, the news is so desperately trying to get attention that it attacks readers with ridiculous, dramatic, and romanticized angles. I dont even get it why whenever news programs present an accident or a tragic case, they would also show a different report highlighting the sentiments of the victims family. The newscaster shouldnt reiterate the obvious feelings of the relatives (labis na nalungkot ang mga kamag-anak ng nasawing biktima). Another example is the media frenzy on the birthday celebration of Aling Dionisia (Is this even newsworthy?) Some news are just fillers to retain their ratings. Maybe the timeslot for news programs should be cut short if they dont have anything sensible to report. News keeps on coming and shooting like bullets from a machine gun targeting corrupt officials and lawbreakers alike. Journalists may not earn much but they are compensated by their many exploits far beyond words can describe and the ability to influence people, expose the truth, and affect change. But sadly, the bad guys pull their triggers faster than the journalist could type his saving grace. Life goes on as it should be, molded by the news of everyday happenings. You read the newspaper and get used to the same, black and white daily news. You prefer not to listen to your professor just to listen on the latest rumors. A single news can make a difference and hype the market. And without the news, therell be no Propaganda. But by keeping ourselves updated with the news, we make ourselves brand new like were baptized with new knowledge everyday. Its a commitment to be on track on whats happening to the world. News also reminds its readers not just to have a tongue for spiteful comments but a heart for hope that good news will still win over the (not-so) bad news headlining the media. For the present and future CJ staff, I hope this column would inspire you to become better and more committed news writers. Its not a question of who, what, when, where, and why but how. No Sir, No Maam
WHETHER AT home or in school, we are always told to use honorifics such as Sir, Maam, Ate, Kuya, Manong, and Ale, and it should be backed up with a po or opo when were talking to an adult. And Ive been doing these since time in memorial. During lunch on my first day as an intern in a business process outsourcing firm, I addressed my boss and colleagues with Maam and po. I was really surprised when they told me that I should not address them like that, or else I would have to pay 10 pesos. They said that I should call them by their first name. Take note: should, not could. Luckily for me, they didnt collect any 10 pesos from me even though I still said po that day. My supervisor explained to me that such custom is being practiced in the company because it helps one to be more aggressive and to establish professionalism among the organization. I was happy that they allowed me to call them by their first name because that meant that they have accepted me as their colleague despite the fact that Im only an intern. Indeed, the practice was effective in making me more self-assured when it comes to asking questions and voicing out my opinions, to which they happily answer and listen to. Also, the norm of first-name basis and exclusion of po pro-po-sed to me a great challenge: to become respectful and courteous without relying on honorifics, and to become assertive as intended without sounding too offensive. To be honest, it was hard for me, and it took me a long time before I got the hang of it. From there, I realized that the Filipino culture relies heavily on honorifics, that once we forget to mention them, we are perceived to be rude. Personally, I believe that we can be magalang without honorifics. Its just a matter of sentence construction, and the tone of ones voice, balancing euphemism while conveying the truth. Besides, the true measure of respect is not in what we say to people per se, but in how we treat them. In other countries, they regard each other with respect even though they dont have honorifics. In fact, in the West, they call their uncles and aunts by their first names! Id really like that to be practiced more in our country, but I guess you cant change a culture overnight. This part is dedicated to my fellow DKS peeps: ka-interns from 3FM1, 3FM2, 3FM3, Ateneo, UP, and San Beda and to my teammates from Group Reporting and Group Risk Control. Thank you for giving me a memorable and meaningful summer! Till we meet again. J

The Taste of Excellence

ITS A jungle out there, my mom always tells me this since I was in grade school. True enough, life doesnt fall short for that description. Suddenly, all the dreams that I have dreamt and the successes that I have pictured blurred into a mirage after experiencing the bitter realities that life has to offer. But never have I lost my drive to pursue them. I simply swallowed all the bitterness in belief that theres always a sweet aftertaste. I was never the best of anything. Well at least thats what I thought. In grade school and in high school, Ive always been a bullied kid who always had insults thrown at me. I became a nobody with them constantly stepping on me. Perhaps to them, these are no more but for friendly laughs. Yet unknowingly, they tore me apart. But now, I dont wish to change this cruel part of my life because it has developed me into a stronger person: one who fights for his dignity. For the first time in my life, I felt I was a somebody when I stepped into college. Every time I recite, theres silence and respect. People fear me in debates, professors admire my curiosity, peers look up to me as an inspiration, and most of all, Ive learned to defend my reputation. This trait perhaps made me inspired to become a lawyer someday; a trait that has been conceived from a bullied loser. But it hadnt always been downfall for me in high school. Having been a Second Honor student and being competent in public speaking, debating, campus journalism, and class leadership, I have survived Lourdes School. My peers cannot measure the countless efforts Ive poured in every group activity that Ive led and every project that Ive spent sleepless nights on. There was this big break that I was proud of before graduating high school. I was given a chance to represent Lourdes for a national competition in oration. Though I didnt get the top notch, it didnt stop me; rather it was an improving point. After that, I won an on-campus oratorical speech contest in Lourdes and I was deemed as Orator of the Year. My name was a word of mouth for the student body. On the day I received my medal on stage, Ive realized that I can do great things. This experience has yet again proven another thing mom has told me. She said that when you play with destiny, You fight a good fight, you finish the race, and you keep the fate. No matter how bitter or how sweet it turns out. Then college added a new chapter to my life. The moment that I stepped foot in UST, I was back to square one. Fair enough, I can start anew: change my ways, build a new name, and persevere more than I did before. At all the unwinding challenges professors laid before us, my blockmates whined and complained. But from me, not even a word. I simply did my best. First semester was glorious as I saw my name published in the College under the header written Deans List, and being one of the best journalist trainees in the Commerce Journal (CJ). But all that suddenly reclined in the Second Semester. I was perched on the edges of my priorities. I was chosen to represent the College in a University-wide documentary making competition. Distinction, honor, and glory shone themselves before me. Dazzled with what I can gain, I joined. All my efforts were poured on video editing, scriptwriting, acting, shooting, and producing the entire filmwith least priority I gave to my studies. With most of the burdens carried in the group, I did a good film. Yet, I lost. My grades were draining down and all the pressures have been digging out everything consumable within my body. This woke up the sleeping soul in me that had once enjoyed the spotlight. I have focused more on the things that shone as if they were gold. Now, Ive realized: I should foresee circumstances, think for the best of my own, and prioritize the reason why Im in school. And thats to graduate with flying colors of hard-to-reach grades. I was prayerful enough that still, I was able to make it through in the The Prosecutor | page 7

Prelude
I WOKE up at 6:30 am not knowing what was lying ahead of me; after all, it was my first day of work. It was my first day to test my adaptability to a new working environment. I really wanted to know how fast I can react once the tasks are delegated to me. After indulging on some cereal, I quickly dressed up and led my feet to the MRT station. As usual, the train was jam packed with people who were in distorted queues; pushing my way inside made me feel like I was going to be a canned sardine. After enduring the hardship, I took a bus ride to Taguig City to reach my destination The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. This is one of the international banks that I have heard about. All I wish is to take part in the preservation of its prestige even though I am an intern. However, I was still nervous about what was going to happen. Upon arrival, I was guided by the Resource Specialist to my designated department. The office was just as I expected. It was dominated by silence. The employees were focused on their monitors. I can hear their fingers pressing their keyboards really fast. Hearing them makes the word stress pop out of my head. For this day, I underwent a detailed orientation regarding the process of filing security documents for a few minutes. After which, I was immediately sent to work. Due to this, my head was filled with a lot of information and I suddenly had migraine. Thankfully, I was able to sustain my composure. I didnt hesitate to present inquiries to my supervisor. After all, the documents that Im handling values up to millions of peso. Even though the work got my hands full, I still think that there was something missing. Weeks have passed and I am getting used to my work. However, my daily routine has been pegged to clerical tasks; I believe that my duties have a limited room for learning. Also, it did not make full use of my capabilities. Though I gained knowledge about the necessary documents for various types of loans, my work was still restricted to typing, sorting, and photocopying files. As a proud Finance student, I plan to take up the CFA exam soon and I dont know how these tasks could help me achieve my goal. This thought circled through my mind; not until I met some of the alumni along the line to the MRT. They asked me, Where do you have your internship I simply replied HSBC. Then, the three-lettered word came out of their mouth: WOW! At that moment, their expression stung me like a bee. It made realize that I have been selfish to choose my duties. Moreover, that simple yet stunning word enabled me to draw the line between reality and fantasy. I got to understand what my supervisor meant when she said that I have just tasted a dose of reality on my first day of work. Who am I to ask for complex duties? Should they ask me to decide on what interest rate to offer their clients? Then I would complain all day how hard they are pushing this student intern. When I come to think of it, I noticed that I am almost doing the same work as the other employees in HSBC yet I was still choosy. At that point I was ashamed of myself, because by being unsatisfied, I am somehow telling the employees at my department that their work is very unfulfilling. Its a slap to their face. I realized that in order for me to be given those tasks, I must master whats happening at the bottom of the pyramid. By doing so, I will be able to determine errors once I reach the pyramids peak. Given this realization, I have embodied my sentiments on a quote by Phillips Brooks. Do not pray for tasks to equal your power. Pray for power to equal your tasks. This says that we should be contented of what we have now. Sometimes its better to have simple tasks that are beyond ones control rather than having complex duties. Sooner or later those tasks will just come right through our doors. Basically, I got over doing clerical tasks; I learned to accept and appreciate them. Thats why I would like to thank HSBC for giving me the opportunity to work with them especially to my Thomasian mentor, who has been guiding me throughout the internship program. For those who were also assigned to do clerical tasks yet did their best, congratulations; at least you were not doing half-baked work. This summer began like a storm but thankfully it ended in good tides.

The Borderline of Social Network Statuses

IN CANADA, people tend to flirt faster, break promises easier and keep dirty secrets better. If you were one of my friends on this social networking site, you may have seen this status on my profile. You might even say, Whoa, this guy got (excuse the term) the BALLS. Leaving a straightforward status like this can catch attention. I was having second thoughts before posting it but I told myself, Heck! Why not? This was really how I felt. Unfortunately, many people got offended. Afterwards, rumors spread quickly like those saying I was a bitter old friend, the battered ex-lover, and the inconsiderate other half which were all entirely untrue. Some people who posted such comments dont even know me personally; they got my eyebrows raised to their limit. I then asked myself, what is the difference between posting rants online and sharing your feelings with your friends online? MMMMMMMM People rarely reprimand you for spreading rumors. Most of the times, they would even be happier to let the whole world know about it. For example, one of your closest friend confines to you her deepest darkest secrets. Apparently she, at one point, has gotten into your nerves and at the back of your mind, you still want to get revenge. The next thing youd do is to create a rumor out of the things she has told you. By making it known via word-of-mouth, it becomes an urban legend. But try posting it on any social networking site, there we have a different story. MMMMMMMM A social networking site as defined by www.pcmag.com is a website that provides a virtual community for people to share their daily activities with family and friends, or to share their interest in a particular topic, or to increase their circle of acquaintances. They communicate with each other by making their latest thoughts public in a blog-like format or via e-mail, instant messaging, voice or video-conferencing to selected members. In simple terms, its like your own free space in the virtual world. You can share and express what you feel at the spur of that moment. Unfortunately, it is criticized badly just because you post a straightforward or daring statement. This form of cyber-bullying is plainly unfair; I, for one, have been a victim of it. People overreact upon seeing internet posts as compared to hearing messages. Shouldnt it be the other way around? Shouldnt people condemn you for spreading it than believing your post? MMMMMMMM It is your free space. YOUR space. Social networking sites are portals where you can express what you feel about certain matters and care less what others might say. People who get mad at you and your posts should be fair and be equally mad at their friends who personally spread rumors among their circle. Take it as if we are killing the wrong devil here. Posting straightforward statuses and spreading rumors via word-of-mouth are two evils of different degree. As for me, spreading it is the greater evil which must be punished more severely because theres an assurance that it was you who went out and told everybody that malicious fact, as compared with a rumor-worthy online post which can be likely done by a hacker. To sum it all up, people should care more what you do in real life rather than what you do online. MMMMMMMM I salute and honor the courage and honesty of those people who freely express their thoughts on social networking sites. Society needs more outspoken people this day. If ever you, the one who posted such status, are being criticized, bullied, and treated as the worst person on the planet by people, just remember it is not you who is the real hypocrite.

DO YOU have something bothering your mind? Or perhaps you have been feeling loveless, clueless, or simply hopeless. As Commerce students, these random feelings, coupled with our daily dose of school-caused stress, hinder our way towards the corporate ladder. In fact, most of us get drowned not only in the intersecting graphs and colliding numbers but also in our various duties and responsibilities as students. Do not let these feelings hinder you from attaining your goals because the College of Commerce and Business Administration has three resident life-guards who provide expert advice. They do not rely on mere instinct to save one from the depths of confusion; they provide clear-cut solutions using a clinical tool called Psychology. Let us listen to these three familiar faces as they take on mind-boggling cases.

Maam Christine C. Quita

Dear Maam Tin, In my few years of stay in the College, I noticed that the College is being stereotyped by some students as a dumpsite. Due to this, I am losing my self-esteem. Also, the College seems to be experiencing a lower number of enrollees every year. Can you please give me advice on this matter? Sincerely Yours, Student Advocate Dear Student Advocate, As I have always been saying, your College is not a dumpsite. I believe its more of a quarry site where gold is mined. Each Commerce graduate could be a potential business tycoon. I understand how youre being affected by those stereotyping but they have to remember that College of Commerce and Business Administration is still in UST. Students got in to the University because they are good. I can personally attest to the employability of our graduates and they make good in the workplace. For now, the only action that you and the rest of the Commerce students can do is perform well in your studies and refrain from settling for mediocrity. This can help in eliminating the branding of your College as a dumpsite.

Dear Maam Jheng, My girlfriend and I are seniors. We have been a couple for almost five years. However, Im in love with another girl and plan to break up with Jane. Theres no doubt that my love for Jane was genuine for the past years. Yet, things are different now and I just want to be really honest with what I feel, but her heart disease keeps me from telling her the bad news. What can you advise me given that my actions will affect her health? Sincerely Yours, Mr. Yellow

CJ: What was your most unforgettable moment in the College? Maam Tin: I will never forget the times when I hosted programs such as Commerce Night and the InQuest: Are You Smarter Than Your Professors? By being involved with these activities, I was able to show the other side of me because Guidance Counselling focuses more on the melancholic aspect. CJ: In the College, you are known to be a very jolly and cheerful person. How do you keep yourself in high spirits? Maam Tin: I believe that everything happens for a reason. Also, being a counsellor, I know that all things (including problems) have a solution. So why should I be sad?

You see her pacing to and fro the rooms to give counselling services. She also hosts a variety of the Colleges events dancing and singing on stage. Also, shes always ready to serve you with a cup-full of advice despite her busy schedule which includes facilitating the PEERS activities. Or you may just see her walking around the busy corridors, exchanging smiles with different faces. Today, this energetic woman is saying goodbye; not to worry, she is not moving away to a distant land, she is just transferring to the College of Fine Arts and Design (CFAD). Let us hear what Maam Christine TinTin Quita has to say about her memories in the College.

Maam Christine C. Quita: Blissful Memoirs from Yellow Palettes

Dear Mr. Yellow, It is clear with me that you do care for Jane. It is hard to stay in a relationship that long if you are not in love with the person. Perhaps something changed, you fell out of love with her and now you deeply care for another girl. It is never easy breaking somebodys heart whatever the situation or circumstances may be. But if you are decided in entering a new commitment with someone else, having an excess baggage is not a great idea. Every relationship needs a right start as well as a proper closure and you have to be fair to all concerned. If you no longer love Jane, talk to her gently and tell her. Explain to her why you are breaking up with her. You have been together for five years and it is probable that Jane has already sensed that there is already something wrong with your relationship. Spare her the guessing game and the pain of not knowing; you owe her that. Because whichever way you do it, you are going to hurt her. If you delay telling her what you plan to do, you will only hurt her even more, and it also becomes harder for you. Do both of yourselves a favor and tell her. Just talk. And be consistent with your decision. Good luck! Quita, Bruno, de Leon

Dear Maam Monica, I am a star basketball player. For this reason, I became popular among the students. However, I broke my leg in an accident. My friends who I thought were true are now gone. Since then, my teachers and my classmates were constantly blaming me for the downfall of our basketball team. I cant stand them nagging every day. Sometimes, I even think of committing suicide. What should I do? Sincerely Yours, Suicidal Jack

The Brain Spark

Dear Suicidal Jack, I understand that basketball has been a very important part of your life. You invested a lot of your time and energy perfecting your skills; you have thrived in it. So, seeing yourself as an ordinary student and not the star player is difficult to accept. But you are more than just a star basketball player. It may have been a large and significant part of your life but it does not define who you are as a person. Even if you feel that your friends, classmates, and teachers blame you for the loss of your team, you have no control over their opinions about you. There will still be people who think otherwise and will be understanding and supportive of you. You only have control over yourself, your thoughts and actions. Remember, no one can make you feel down unless you allow him or her. If you think that all of your friends have abandoned you, then maybe its time to meet new ones who will be able to show you what true friendship is about. Moreover, your condition now is just temporary. You might still be able to play basketball again after your complete recovery if you want to. You may try coaching, or better yet, discover new skills that you were not able to practice because of the time invested in basketball. The point is, your current situation is not hopeless. It does not mean that just because you are unable to play basketball now, or that your career as a star player has ended, your life has to end too.

According to Maam Monica and Maam Jheng, Maam Tin is a funny person; she can liven up the mood but when you discuss important matters with her, she does it seriously. Well miss her especially when she discusses sensible things under the sun, said Maam Monica. After five years of stay in the College, Maam Tin ends her term with blissful thoughts to ponder on. For me the College is a haven of good and rich people. When I speak of rich, it is not only composed of the monetary aspect, rather, it also refers to richness in experience and stories. I would compare it (the College) with a fountain thats overflowing with joyful memories, she exclaimed.

CJ: How would you like the College to remember you? Maam Tin: I would like to be remembered as a person who, at one point in someones life I made him/her smile. CJ: Can you please share some of the Guidances activities/ accomplishments? Maam Tin: Basically, we offer everything except money laundering (she jokes). Our activities are composed of inquiry, counselling, testing, information giving, and career guidance. CJ: Are there any quotes you would like to share? Maam Tin: Rather than a quote, I would like to share my insights. We shoudnt believe that Commerce is a dumpsite because we are a quarrying site. Nagmimina tayo ng ginto. In the future, Commerce students will provide jobs for people.

Commerce Mens Football Team Captain Billy Antonio (4E3) blames their loss to the teams lack of discipline, practice, and underestimation of opponents. Bilog ang bola, as they phrase it after their team had beaten strong colleges like the College of Tourism and Hotel Management and had lost to the College of Science whom they expected to be a weak rival. However, the Commerce Men Kickers are eyeing the Graduate Schools position of being the consistent champion of the Goodwill Games. Antonio admits that it would be a hard target considering that most of the players of the Graduate School are the former ace players of the different Colleges. This season, trainings would no longer be a problem for the team because most of the players have the same schedule (mid session). Another bullet that other Colleges should watch out for are the new kickers of the team. The Commerce Men Kickers will use the force of passion and the name of the College to seize the gold. Its the passion of the players that keeps us going. Di namin nakakalimutan na dala namin ang name ng College, kaya we are going to play better this year and beat the other teams for the College, explained Antonio.

Meanwhile, her fellow Finance senior Hero Tiu (4FM3) was elected Treasurer. He aims for JCFAP to become a place for development of Finance students and to gain tie-ups with wellknown companies which would benefit the members. JCFAP is the umbrella-organization of all Finance organizations in the country. It is committed to foster educational advancement among its members through conventions, seminars, and interschool activities that would promote camaraderie, social awareness and civic consciousness to its members.

Commerce student elected new SOCC President

by Janina Ana F. Mercado
After nine years, a student from the College of Commerce and Business Administration is to lead the official umbrella organization of Universitywide and College-based student organizations in UST. Rolando Vittorio B. Gatmaitan, Jr. (4M4) was elected Student Organization Coordinating Council (SOCC) President for this academic year. According to Gatmaitan, the SOCC projects will revolve around the theme Tria Heac: Faith, Hope, and Love which aims to ignite the Thomasian leadership spirit. The SOCC President also stated that his term will be devoted to community service. We really want to fully participate on the centerpiece project of the UST Quadricentennial anniversary, the Simbahayan 400: Tomasino Para Sa Simbahayan, Tahanan, at Bayan. he said. The Simbahayan 400 is a holistic community development project that showcases the 400 activities of the University for building the Church, the home, and the nation. Also, Gatmaitan will be forefronting annual University-wide events such as the organization fair, USTv Kick Off, and the big 4 events namely, Makibata: Emmanuel, Cheermania XVII: Saga, A Longing For Conquest, Himig Tomasino: Serenate d Amore, and The Search for the Ideal Thomasian Personalities (TSITP) 2012. The selection of the SOCC Executive Board undergoes a different process, unlike the usual University-wide election where all students get to vote a running candidate. The SOCC election was only participated by representatives of different University-wide and Collegebased organizations under the scope of SOCC in a three-day Leadership Training Seminar (LTS) from May 25-27 at the Caleruega Retreat Center, Batualo, Nasugbu, Batangas. We dont run for a particular position here in SOCC. As much as possible, we nominate qualified members on-the-spot to prevent politics during the election, the newly elected SOCC president explained. Gatmaitan was formerly the Vice President of the Pre-Commerce Society last A.Y. 2009-2010. It was the same organization that sent him to attend that years SOCC LTS where he was nominated to be part of the Batch 2009-2010 SOCC Executive Board. He was immediately elected as Assistant Treasurer. A year after, he was elected as the SOCC Vice President and spearheaded projects such as Recruitment 101: Your Subject to Student Involvement, Hype! the SOCC Street Dance Competition, the 7th USTv Students Choice Awards Kick Off, Starbucks Coffee Day, and the TSITP 2011. He also tied-up with the Office for the Quadricentennial Activies and Highlights for the projects during the Q-CelebrationQ Welcome Party, Q Parade, and Q Countdown to 400. Gatmaitan is also a Baby Jaycee of the Junior Chamber International Manila Chapter (JCI-Manila), Networking Officer of the Simbahayan Students Coordinating Council, and member of the Lions Club International Manila Chapter. Business Administration major Arnel Cruz was the last Commerce student that headed SOCC in A.Y. 2002-2003.

Paragon set to sail on first semester

by Alissandra Loisa O. Reyes
THE COLLEGE of Commerce and Business Administration takes schooling a step higher as the Commerce and Business Administration Student Council (CBASC) launches Paragon, a series of alternative classes, for this semester. Named after a term which depicts a model of excellence or perfection of a kind, Paragon seeks to carry out extra classes that would teach the students things they would not usually learn inside the classroom thus giving them an edge when it comes to employment. According to the event proponent, CBASC Vice President Mary Anne Takako Aoki, the holistic development of the students is what the employers of this generation are looking for. The demand for competent and competitive people is increasing, she said. The schedule of the alternative classes will temporarily be as follows: August 17-20 for make-up, modelling, photography, and hosting classes; and language classes (in collaboration with the Commerce

The Prosecutor page 5

52 children page 8

Parliament) held every Saturday. A specific month will be allotted for each language. Japanese is scheduled for July, Chinese for November, and Korean for February. Aoki adds that when it comes to certain situations, the students should be able to present themselves well because a single mistake can send wrong impressions to the person involved. [Paragon] classes are more of a social interactive type as they would focus on the students and their skills. No grades, no judgements, because I want students to be comfortable whenever they are in that class, she added. Registration will start a week or two before the implementation of Paragon. Participating students have to pay Php 200 fee for the alternative classes while the language classes would be for free. With the hope of having numerous students participate in the event, further advanced language classes would depend on the turn out and the number of students who would request for more. With this, another proposal is yet to be made.

decided to team up with CBASC who has more connections with the medical crew. Since 1992, the project was originally initiated by the Junior Chamber of Business Administration (JCBA), formerly the home organization of the Finance and Marketing majors. On the other hand, the title 400 smiles was adopted from College of Commerce Student Councils (CCSC) outreach program last year which was in line with the Quadricentennial festivities.

Id like to take this opportunity to acknowledge CJs ates and kuya who signed off last April. To Kuya Art who trained me to become a better news writer and editor; Ate Verma for being the sweetest and most thoughtful ate of all; Ate Cath (Nay) for simply being a mother for the staff and to our siblings-to-be; and to Ate Mel whose radiance never fades despite her once-in-ablue-moon stay in our yellow abode. Thank you very much and Ill miss you allJ.

Deans List and that I still have a good foundation to run for graduating honors. And now that Im in my third year, I took the risk and I am in Finance. Honestly, Im not that guy who deals with numbers as if theyre just a card game. My grades in Math and Accounting can never be compared to an Einstein-kid. But as what my favorite professor keeps on telling the class, Life is always a Tradeoff between Risk and Return. You cant just get your lunch without paying a price. This also shows in how I took the risk as the CJ News Editor, as a scholar of Security Bank with a maintaining grade of 1.75, as a Publication Assistant of the UST Social Research Center, and as an Auditor of our Parish organization. Risk is always inevitable. You should learn how to play with it and take it farther for a better return. And whether it be about wealth, or simply about competencies, I always keep this in mind when dealing with risks: Life is not about what you have. Its what you do with what you have; the very majesty of excellence. Like an average guy, my experiences speak of who I am now. I was loved by a family, equipped with an excellent education, climbed the ladders and aimed for excellence. Like an average kid, I tasted the bitterness of life. I fought with friends, I felt family conflicts and misunderstandings, I was dragged down by failures, and I went away from God. All of these are ingredients of who I am now: ingredients for something good to be cooked in time. All these bitter, sour and salty, or sweet, tender and scrumptious they comprise the top campus journalist, competent Deans Lister, fluent public speaker, inspiring debater, creative video editor, aspiring lawyer, prayerful child, and loving son, that I am now. Soon in time, people will be talking about my name, and be proud to say I know him.

Last Season: None Prediction: 1st Runner-Up Other competitors should watch their back for a more disciplined and more honed Commerce Lady Kickers in this years Thomasian Goodwill Games. The Commerce Womens Football Team has the same problem as their counterpartlack of discipline and practice. Commerce Womens Football Team Captain Claire Pacay (4E2) confesses that their greatest obstacle is themselves. We actually consider ourselves as our greatest obstacle, kasi kung walang kang discipline at love sa sport na to, malaking kalaban talaga ang sarili mo and improvement is really difficult kaya talagang kailangan ng willpower, she explained. Seven team members who graduated includes the Top Commerce Lady Goalkeeper Ayrton Dino who is a great loss to the team because she saves the team from the good shots that the opponent thrusts. However, Pacay does not lose hope despite the inevitable. [Pero] as long as we enjoy this sport and each other plus determination, naniniwala akong kayang-kaya ng Commerce Team na talunin ang kahit na sino, she exclaimed. This year, the team plans to choose only 20 new kickers in order to have stricter trainings and to be more focus in improving their skills. Also the big loss of graduates will not dishearten them from playing better. The Commerce Lady Kickers will push and kick other teams farther to reach the goal.

Commerce Mens Basketball

Last season: 2nd runner-up Prediction: 1st runner-up The Commerce Mens Basketball Team didnt have a Cinderella ending last season. They were almost unbeatable until the clock ticked twelve and they lost on the last game. Unfortunately, they dont have a fairy godmother to save them. Thus, in order to have a happy ending this year, they are eyeing for taller players who arent just tall but can wear the glass shoes. Malakas ang Commerce, former Commerce Mens Basketball Team Captain Marc de Joya stated. They have been always one of the strongest competitors that other colleges should watch out for. However, with the loss of four strong seniors who just graduated, the team needs to exert extra effort to maximize the players skills and abilities. De Joya also told CJ that the graduates who are popularly known as the Power Four really had their specializations as each of them contributed in both offense and defense. But de Joya still sees the light even if the team lost the Power Four, Wala naman kasi kaming matatawag na faults last season, mas malakas lang talaga yung Engineering. He also explained that the team needs to train harder and to keep their focus in every game, Kung mas binigay namin lahat last season, dapat more than that pa yung ibigay ng bagong team dahil alam ko kaya ng Commerce. This year, the team needs more tall players who can contribute in defense and offense, one way or another. Specialties in rebounding, assists, scoring, and a deep bench can help the team box-out for the gold. The exit of the seniors doesnt make the team less of a strong team. They are still a team not just to watch out for but to be afraid of.

Student leaders revisit Caliraya for Congress

like collecting coins underwater, passing an earth ball, wall-climbing, getting through an obstacle course, eating strange food, going down a mudslide, and making poker-faced student coordinators laugh. Later that night, a Solemnity Night was conducted wherein the participants reflected on their responsibilities and commitments as student leaders. The last day was allotted for leisure time. The leaders congress was joined by selected officers from 12 of the 16 mandated organizations of the College, namely, the CBASC, the Commerce Journal (CJ), the Commission on Election (COMELEC), the Economics Society (EcoSoc), the Junior Financial and Investment Executives (JFINEX), the PreCommerce Society (PreCom), the Society of Thomasian Entrepreneurs (STE), the Thomasian Junior Association for People Management (TJAPM), the Thomasian Junior Marketing Association (TJMA), the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), the Community Achievers Association (ComAch), the Pax Romana, the Red Cross Youth Council-Commerce Unit (RCYC), the Rotaract-Commerce Unit, and the Scarlet. The 2011 Congress is a new version of the annual Leadership Training Seminar (LTS). According to CBASC Asst. Treasurer Guammer L. Partosa, the project head of the said event, they changed the name of the LTS into the Annual Thomasian Business Leaders Congress because the latter suggests that it is a yearly meeting of the Thomasian business student leaders where they discuss the planned activities or projects of each organization for the academic year. Changing the title of the event is also necessary to add a status to the usual LTS title since we are Commerce and Business Administration students [who are] trained to be future professional business leaders, Partosa said.

Hyperball pushes through despite conflicts last A.Y.

by Karen S. Mizusaki
PRE-COMMERCE SOCIETY (PreCom) President Christine Adrielle L. Cruz confirmed that Hyperball, the sports competition for the Basic Business Education Department (BBED) students, will take place this academic year despite its cancellation last year. In an interview with the Commerce Journal (CJ), Cruz said that Hyperball will commence with the approval of Asst. Prof. Erika V. Puno, the current BBED Chair and Pre-Com Adviser. We decided to go through with this project because we aim to develop our members holistically. One way is through sports, the Pre-Com President explained. Hyperball, which officially started in September, was temporarily stopped last November. The first reason behind was a fund shortage which opted Pre-Com to collect not only the Php500 registration fee for those who participated in both basketball and volleyball games and Php300 for those who participated in one sport only, but another Php 150/game from the winning sections who wanted to continue playing in the event. After the collection, the games have been resumed during the start of March. But one week before the finals, Asst. Prof. Puno halted the games to give way for the examinations. Thus, the previous PreCom Executive Board opted to discontinue the games without any recognized winners. Aside from the aforementioned reason, Cruz added that the unfinished Hyperball games were due to the total number of participants and the use of round robin as the method of elimination. As she stated, With these, the duration of

games became longer and thus, some were unfinished. To resolve the problem, Cruz announced that they are planning to implement single elimination for this years Hyperball games. Also, they decided to only accomodate 14 participating classes for both basketball and volleyball games on a first come, first serve basis. Since the event is an inter-class competition, it does allow collaboration of different classes to form one team. With regards to the budget, Cruz said that they will not undervalue the funds so that the organization will have everything settled in the allotted duration for the Hyperball games. The tentative opening date of the Hyperball is on September 11.

Last year: Champion Prediction: 1st Runner-Up Holding the championship title and losing five of the first six of the team caused pressure to present Commerce Mens Volleyball Team Captain Enrico Angeles Jr. (3TE1) for the upcoming 2011-2012 Thomasian Goodwill Games. But instead of getting intimidated with the big responsibility, the team captain bravely said that all they have to do is to just adjust with the changes. Without the presence of their former members who graduated, they have to compensate with their skills through training harder, focusing more intensively, and driving beyond their limits in order to achieve the goal of reigning as the victors in the University for another year. On the other hand, to fill up the vacant positions, the team had their try-outs last June 12 at the Bomber Gym. According to Angeles, they have recruited two players with high potential who would be of big help to the team in the games. Furthermore, Angeles strongly showed his faith for his team to grab the title again, I believe in my teammates. We just have to continue being strong not just individually but as one team, he exclaimed.

52 children, 25 adults helped by Commerce orgs medical outreach

by Audric Bryant T. Co
52 BOYS passed the most important stage of manhood while 25 adults were given free blood pressure check-up and medicine last May 20 as the Thomasian Junior Marketing Association (TJMA), in coordination with the Commerce and Business Administration Student Council (CBASC) and the Community Achievers Association (ComAch), organized a circumcision and medical outreach entitled 400 Smiles for 400 Children: Boys to MEN at Barangay 56, Tondo, Manila. Children ranging from 7-14 years old were circumcised. In the process, though, some patient suffered from minor cases of bleeding and inflammation. But junior Faculty of Medicine student Jeff Maniquis, head of the medical team for the outreach, explained that these incidents are normal and it depends on the anatomy of the patients body. Merong mga different variations sa anatomy ng bawat bata, so may mga batang bleeder talaga at may mga batang walang dugo[pag tinutuli], he explained. Last year: None Prediction: 2nd Runner-Up Despite not making it to the semifinals last year, present Commerce Womens Volleyball Team Captain Erika Maria Lukban (4FM3) sturdily says that they have the guts to snatch the title in this years Thomasian Goodwill Games. Service errors caused by lack of training have caused this failure for the Commerces Lady Spikers. But it would not happen again this year because the team is already preparing for the playoffs. Perfecting basic skills, concentrating on defense, and executing killer attacks are just few of the many tactics that the other colleges should be cautious for. As the lady captain stated, We must first receive the ball well to have a good set. With regards to their team, Lukban told the Commerce Journal (CJ) that they lost three skillful members composed of one blocker, one utility, and one service specialist since they graduated. Their loss will affect the teams performance but among the original 12 members of the team, nine are left to work hard as Commerces pride in the volleyball court. This year Commerce is looking forward to seize another trophy that would mark history in the College. And this was sealed by Lukbans words, Every players goal is to bring home that championship trophy. Weve been preparing for this season even before the school year started; hence, I can truly say we have the guts to win all the way. Our teams closer than ever and I can see their eagerness to win and represent our college. This years gonna be our year.
