1. What is semantics? Semantics is the study of meaning. It is a wide subject within the general study of language. An understanding of semantics is essential to the study of language acquisition and language change. It is important for understanding language social contexts, as there are likely to affect meaning, and for understanding varieties of English and effects of style. It is thus one of the most fundamental concepts in linguistics. The study of semantics includes the study of how meaning is constructed, interpreted, clarified, obscured, illustrated, simplified negotiated, contradicted and paraphrased. 2. What does semantics concern about? Semantics concern with the meanings of words, and the meaning relationships among words, and phrasal or sentential semantics, which is concerned with the meaning of syntactic units larger than the word. 3. 5. What do you know about metaphor and simile and give examples of each? Metaphor is when you compare 2 unlike things without using words like or as Example : the boy told his mother a white lie Simile is when you compare 2 unlike thing using the words like or as Example : my love is like a red rose 6. What do you know about? a. Lexical semantics? is a subfield of linguistics. Its the study of how and what the words of language denote. b. Sentential semantics? is determined by not only meaning of each component of sentence. 7. What is the relationship between symbol and referent and give example of symbol and referent? Relationship between symbol and referent is a symbol is something which we us to represent another things, the thing that the symbol identifies in the referent.
