WellTestToolbox 'Lite' edition

Release note by Ed Stephens, Dec 2001. Abstract: The Well Test Toolbox (lite) version is a cut down version of the Well Test Toolbox designed for the simplest "forward run" mode use and with much simpler input.

Background
The Well Test Toolbox originated from a 1998-99 project "Constraining of geological models with well test and production logging data"; i.e. it supports a Geocap(v5)Reduce++-MoReS update loop as research functionality. WTToolbox software was NOT in fact a deliverable as the BAA had explicitly excluded funding for user software. Nevertheless we did manage to produce something capable of being ufesul for group reservoir engineers assuming only moderate competence in FrontEnd input language. The project was cut in 1999 and remains discontinued, however the WTToolbox is a valuable tool and has functionality unique to Shell. Via feedback we have found that using the Well Test Toolbox can be awkward. It requires the special WTToolbox command line, even though this is really just FrontEnd with preloading of some scripts. It also requires iMath to use external processes so the tool cannot run on PC / Windows platform (the Unix emulator used does not support multiple processes as of v10.x). From an input point of view the examples illustrate the full functionality, including regression and fitting, which is much more complex than the minimum necessary. In this respect the tool suffers from its primary purpose, i.e. regression for constraining of models with dynamic data, whereas for a simple forward run of a well test 90+% of the input is unnecessary.

Functionality
WTToolboxLite is a cut down version of the Well Test Toolbox, and as such most of the documentation and all of the technical reference guide stand. The major elements cut out are: 1. parameter regression and fitting functionality, and 2. automatic grid refinement. In the latter case one should still use grid refinement, but the choice and method for this is placed entirely in the users domain. In the full Well Test Toolbox the motivation for including an automatic refinement was to facilitate regression on the geometry of the reservoir (see WtExample1_prep.INP). However the drawback of automatic grid refinement is that there is no authoritative best choice refinement to make and the method, such as used by Well Test Toolbox, can have serious drawbacks. There are also many problematic issues when in a mature field in which the region of the well is non-equilibrium. The documented Well Test Toolbox examples are all ported to WTToolboxLite. See WtLiteEx1.INP. Summary: * Runs under normal FE

FE < WtLiteEx1.INP

* Works the same as WTToolbox "_prep" deck * Single command after simulation to trigger post processing plots + viewsets
WTToolboxUpdateOutput()

* Grid refinement is put in the user's model domain. This makes the interface much easier and controllable. * No regression or fitting functionality; only forward runs for a given model and rate sequence is possible. * Uses a (small) fraction of the input because there is no fitting or regression, just forward runs. In the examples, the toolbox specific input lies between "==========" lines. * WTToolboxLite is compatible with ScenarioManager v7.x. These can be set up for example to give a set of type curves. See WtEx1_SkinType.INP.
