Fixed Capacitor Units

KVAR Enclosure Design
Steelman KVAR Power Factor Correction Capacitors are supplied in a NEMA Type 3 Dustproof and Rainproof enclosure, and are suitable for wall, rack, pole, or base mounting. If no knockouts are provided in the enclosure, a conduit hole must be made at the installation. Room is provided in most enclosures for either a side or bottom entry. Care must be taken to avoid holes into any wiring or components inside of the unit.

Life Expectancy
The Steelman KVAR units are designed on a 20 year life expectancy. The capacitors are suitable for operation between -40oF to +115oF (-40oC to +46oC). Each individual capacitor cell has an external discharge resistor which reduce the residual voltage to less than 50 volts within one minute after the capacitor is dissconnected from power.

Flammable Liquid
National Electrical Code Article 460-2 permits a maximum of 3 gallons of flammable liquid without the need of enclosing in vaults. All Steelman KVAR units contain less than 3 gallons of flammable liquid. Good installation practice dictates locating the capacitor away from combustible materials and sources of excess heat. These capacitors contain no PCB's.

KVAR Fuse Rating

Steelman KVAR units have, as an option, internal line fusing, using current limiting fuses that have an interrupting capacity of 100,000 amps. Do not replace with fuses of a lower rating. These fuses minimize hazard to personnel, property and adjacent capacitor cell. The internal fusing is not a substitute for a switching device or external protection of the KVAR unit.

KVAR Unit Pilot Lights

Steelman KVAR units have, as an option, pilot lights, which, when lit, indicate that a fuse has been blown. This option allows visual maintenance inspection of the KVAR unit.

Inspection & Maintenance

At time of receipt and installation, make sure that the equipment has not been damaged during shipment. Check compliance with local code and manufacturers specifications. Insure suitablility of switching, protective devices and connections. Prior to installation check the capacitor nameplate to make certain that the capacitor voltage rating is suitable for operation at the supply (line) voltage. Capacitors are capable of operation at a maximum of 110% of nameplate rated voltage. After installation an additional inspection should be made within 8 to 24 hours after energizing, and at the first periods of light loads to insure that voltages and currents are balanced and are within the limits of the capacitor rating. Check to make sure operating KVAR will not exceed 135% of the rated current under the most severe operating conditions.

Limited Warranty Policy

Steelman KVAR units are warranted to be free from defects in material and workmanship when leaving our factory; provided, however, that our liability under the warranty is limited to repairing or replacing without charge, any defective unit or component within one year from the date of shipment from our factory; provided further that in no event shall Steelman be liable for consequential or other damage. No labor charges for removal or replacement of the defective unit or part will be allowed except when the unit is returned to the factory for repair under warranty, and then only to the extent of repairing the KVAR unit at the factory. Failure to follow factory installation instructions or failure to provide proper protection for the complete installation may void the limited warranty. No other representation or warranty, either expressed or implied is made.

KVAR Connection At The Motor

Steelman KVAR units may be connected such that they are switched with the motor. By utilizing this type of connection, as shown in Figure 1, (bottom of page), maximum benefit of power factor correction is obtained by minimizing system losses. No individual disconnect switch is required to meet National Electrical Code requirements. Special care must be exercised when the KVAR unit is connected as in Figure 1a. The overload relay heater coils must be resized due to the reduction in current through the overloads. The best procedures in resizing the heater coils when connected as in Figure 1a, would be to take an ammeter reading of the line current after correction under normal operating conditions. It is important to remember that this current reading must not be taken at the load side of the overload relay.

KVAR Connection On The Distribution System

Steelman KVAR capacitors may be connected at any point within the electrical distribution system provided proper precautions are taken to comply with National Electrical and local code requirements. Refer to Arfticle 460 of the National Electrical Code for capacitor installations.

KVAR Unit Disconnect Switch

A fused disconnect switch or circuit breaker is recommended between the unit and connection into the electrical distribution system. Disconnect switches and fuses should be sized for a minimum of 1.65 times the expected capacitor current for dual element fuses or 2.5 times the capacitor current if single element fuses are used. If circuit breakers or contactors are used, they should be sized for 1.5 times the expected capacitor current. refer to Table 1.

KVAR Unit Wire Sizing

The minimum wire sizing amperage of the unit should be found by multiplying 1.35 times the amperage of the capacitor. The amperages for the units are shown in Table 1. In addition, the wire size used should be a minimum of 1/3 the conductor size to the individual motor.

CAUTION
DO NOT oversize the Steelman KVAR capacitor. The National Electrical Code requires that the total capacitor
rating connected to the load side of a motor controller is not to exceed the rating required to raise the no-load power factor of the motor to unity.

DO NOT connect Steelman KVAR units to the load side of a starter or contactor for motors subject to
reversing, plugging, frequent starts, crane or elevator applications where the load may drive the motor, multispeed motors, or motors involving open transition reduced voltage starting. On such applications, the KVAR capacitors must be installed in the distribution system ahead of the motor controller, and must not be switched with the load motor.
