Chapter I INTRODUCTION Since before, education is the most precious gift that we receive from our parents because they left no stone unturned, unmindful of their own personal inconveniences just to ensure that we attain our hopes and dreams for a brighter future. Although education is not the only road to success in the working world, much effort is made to identify, evaluate, track and encourage the progress of students in schools. Parents care about their child's academic performance because they believe good academic results will provide more career choices and job security. Schools, though invested in fostering good academic habits for the same reason, are also often influenced by concerns about the school's reputation and the possibility of monetary aid from government institutions, which can hinge on the overall academic performance of the school. State and federal departments of education are charged with improving schools, and so devise methods of measuring success in order to create plans for improvement. This study entitled, The Effect of Study Habits in the Academic Performances in Social Study subject of 3rd Year Students in Ernesto Rondon High School. Background of the Study The researchers come up with this study because they want to know the effect/s of study habits in the academic performances in Social Study subject of 3rd year students in Ernesto Rondon High School. The researchers also want to help our country to progress, especially in the field of education. This study will be useful to the students, teachers, and also other researchers as a guide or reference if they have a study that is connected to it . Successful students have a good study habits. The students study should have at

least three hours for every hour spent in class. Students must have a special place to study. Study time will go better if a learner take a few minutes at the start to straighten things up. (PBBC, 2008). 1

Statement of the Problem This study intended to find out the factors affecting the study habits of 3rd year students to their academic performances in Social Study subject in ERHS. It also aimed to answer the following questions: Problem: 1.) Is there a significant effect of study habits in the academic performances in Social Study subject of 3rd year level students in ERHS? 2.) Is there a significant relationship between the study habits and the grades in Social Study of 3rd year students in ERHS? Alternative Hypothesis: 1.) There is significant effect of study habits in the academic performances in Social Study subject of 3rd year level students in ERHS. 2.) There is a significant relationship between the study habits and the grades in Social Study of 3rd year students in ERHS. Null Hypothesis: 1.) There is a significant effect of study habits in the academic performances in Social Study subject of 3rd year level students in ERHS. 2.) There is no significant relationship between the study habits and the grades in Social Study of 3rd year students in ERHS. Significance of the Study This study entitled, The Effect of Study Habits in the Academic Performances in Social Study subject of 3rd year students in ERHS. The researchers know that students, particularly in ERHS will be benefited of this study since it provides basis for awareness and better understanding of how their current study habits affected their academic performance in Social Study. Teachers will also be benefited in this study in understanding better the diversity of learning of their students. Such as, they could

develop more effective methodologies in teaching their subject matter. Also future researchers may be able to use the result of this study if they have a research that is similar to it.

Scope and Limitations This research was conducted at Ernesto Rondon High School. This was conducted on January 2011. The researchers come up with this research because the researchers want to know if there is a significant effect of study habits to the academic performances in Social Study subject of 3rd year students in ERHS. And the researchers also want to know how the study habits affect the academic performances in Social Study subject of 3rd year students in ERHS. The independent variable of this research is the study habits because it cannot be affected by the other variable. The dependent variable is the academic performance of 3rd year students in Social Study subject. They make this as dependent variable because the results of academic performances of 3rd year students in Social Study subject are depending on the study habits that they do. The constant variables are the 3rd year students, School of Ernesto Rondon High School, and the teacher in Social study. These are constant variable because they will remain the same from the start up to the end of the study. They have to remain constant because if they not remain constant, there may be an imbalance that will occur in the study of the researchers. The limitation of this topic is that, the researchers will only focus on the effect of study habits in the academic performances in Social Study subject of 3rd year students in ERHS. There will be no other reason aside from the reason given above by the researchers.

Conceptual Framework

Dependent Variable: Grades of the 3rd year students in their Social Study subject

This diagram shows how the Study Habits affect the academic performances in Social Study subject of 3rd year students in ERHS. Definition of Terms 1.) Education= the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life 2.) Academic Performance= the ability to study and remember facts, being able to study effectively and see how facts fit together and form larger patterns of knowledge and being able to think for yourself in relation to facts and thirdly being able to communicate your knowledge verbally or down on paper 3.) Students= a person formally engaged in learning, the 3rd year students are the responded in the study 4.) Ernesto Rondon High School= a place where the study conducted 5.) Social Study= a subject area deal with history which is the study of the past, with special attention to the written record of the activities of human beings over time. 6.) Study Habits- refers to the ways of studying on a particular subject.

Chapter II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDY In this regard, this literature review concerning the effect/s of study habits in the academic performance in Social Study of 3rd year students in Ernesto Rondon High School, will address the following areas relevant to this study: study habits, academic performance, and students. Related Studies Successful students have good study habits. They apply these habits to all of their classes. According to Palm Beach Community College (PBBC, 2008) they recommend that students study should have at least three hours out of class for every hour spent in class. They also said that a student must have a special place to study with plenty of room to work. And students should not be cramped. They presupposes that study time will go better if a learner take a few minutes at the start to straighten things up. The PBCC suggests also that distracting noise should be minimized however they said that there are some people need sound and some like silence. In this case, a learner must find what works for him or her. Culprits are family and friends. Consider a "do not disturb" sign and turning on your answering machine is the way also to have better study habits according to the PBBC. Frank Pogue (2000) did a research project to determine why students fail. What he founds to be true in that study habits survey was that more than 30 years ago still rings true today--students fail because they do not know how to study. The best advice he can give is to develop sound study skills.

He said that a student should make sure that he/she has a good study environment, a good desk, a sturdy chair, good light, comfortable room temperature and a quiet atmosphere. That means he/she should eliminate all external and internal distractions. Second, get a good overview of the assignment before starting the work. Know what skills, facts and

ideas that are expected to master and the ground that are expected to cover. Start with most difficult subject first, while the mind is freshest and most receptive.

Related Literature Any students must have a good study habits that start at home, however many students earn the most of them by practicing them and through trial and error. According to Branden Carmondie, an expert author on EzineArticles.com, as orderliness is a dilemma for the majority of high school students, making a day by day itinerary will help to stay current with many assignments and other projects. He also said that the good place to study is one that gives you plenty of room for your papers and books, is comfortable, has good lighting, and little distractions. Karim and Hassan (2006) also note the exponential growth digital information, which changes the way students perceive studying and with printed materials that are to be use in facilitating study. Reading is an attempt to absorb the thought of the author and know what the author is conveying (Leedy 1956). According to (Crilly, 2008), the most successful students balance social activities with good study habits. A diversion from studies will alleviate stress and help prevent you from becoming fatigued. According to the how-to-study.com (2009), students who are very successful in their desired career have good study habits. It is stated in the website that students apply these habits to all of their classes. The website also recommends some tips in improving study habits. The website also suggests that the student should try not to study all the subjects in just a period. The website also added that if you try to do too much studying at one time, you will tire and your studying will not be very effective. Space the work you have to do over shorter periods of time. Taking short breaks will restore your mental energy.

Chapter III METHODS OF RESEARCH AND ITS PROCEDURES This chapter presents the methodology that will be use in the conduct of this study and will include the discussion of method of research, method of collecting data, development of research instrument, preparation of the survey, and the sampling design. Method of Research The descriptive method of research used in this study. Descriptive method of research is a fact-finding study with adequate and accurate interpretation of findings. This study or investigation was concerned with the effect/s of study habits in the academic performances in the Social Study subject of 3rd year students in ERHS, so the descriptive method of research was the most appropriate method to use. Method of Collecting Data The method of collecting data used was the school survey method. This is used to gather data for and about schools and to asses educational achievement and education itself. In this method also, some or all aspects of the school may be surveyed; methods and techniques of teaching, achievements of pupils in different subjects, curriculum, and the like. Since, the present research are about the study habits and the academic performance in Social Study of the 3rd year students in ERHS, the school survey was the most appropriate method to used in gathering data. Development of the Research Instrument The instrument used to collect data was the questionnaire. This was used because it gathers data faster than any other method and it is convenience for the researchers to analyze the results and the title they have. The researchers used survey sheets contains questions that related to their topic. This survey sheets spread out in three sections which are the Platinum, Gold, and Silver. In each section, the researchers get only 20 samples. The results of the survey form will give an accurate result and the problems of the researcher will be solved.

Preparation of the Survey The most important materials in this research is the Survey Form that contains of all questions that will solve the problem of the researchers. For the procedures, the researchers will gave the survey form to 3 sections that they need which are the Platinum, Gold, and Silver in ERHS. In each section, the researchers only need 20 students for as their respondents. The survey form is understandable and easy to the respondents to answer. The data that will be gathered in the survey will keep confidential in order to have convenience for the respondents. The Sampling Design Purposive sampling is determining the target population, those to be involved in the study. The researchers will use purposive sampling because their target population is only the 3rd year students in Ernesto Rondon High School. The researchers will also use another type of sampling which is the pure random sampling. The researchers will use this type of sampling because this sampling is one in which everyone in the population of the inquiry has an equal chance of being selected to be included in the sample. Another reason is, it will be convenient for the researchers to use this type of sampling. Respondents of the Study The main respondents of this study were the 3rd year students. The researchers used the purposive sampling in choosing their respondents which is the 3rd year students. The researchers used random sampling in choosing the three sections in the 3rd year level. Each section has 20 students as the participants or the subject in the study.

Chapter IV ANALYSIS OF DATA AND RESULTS In this chapter, the researchers are going to record the data that have gathered in conducting a survey in three sections of 3rd year students in ERHS. The researchers have worn the 3rd year students as their respondents. The researchers used tabulated data to conclude the results of the data. Observations: Table 1.1

The data that have been recorded are the results of the survey. In all tables, the horizontal columns represent the grades of 3rd year students in their Social Study who answer the survey. The vertical rows represent the study habits of the 3rd year students in ERHS.

Statistical test The researchers will use statistical test to conclude whether there are significant effect of study habits in the academic performance in social study of 3rd year students in ERHS. The statement of the problem, Is there a significant relationship between the study habits and the grades in Social Study of 3rd year students in ERHS? The researchers used Goodman and Kruskals Gamma Formula because it is more convenient and appropriate among all of the statistical tests. Another reason why the researchers used this formula is because of their samples is more than 30. Analysis of Data The researchers will use the Goodman and Kruskals because this formula determines inter-rater reliability for a series of items across many subjects. The statistic that results is easily interpreted and in many ways is analogous to the conventional reliability for quantitative data.

Chapter V SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS This is the final chapter and the most main part of the thesis. It includes the outline of the whole thesis; generalizations; and the recommendations for the solution of problems discovered in the study are addressed to those concerned. Summary of Findings The researchers was started by making its title, the title that was made is, The Effect of Study habits in the Academic Performance in Social Study of 3rd year students in ERHS. The researchers have made this title to know if the academic performance in Social Study of 3rd year students in ERHS will be affected by study habits. In chapter I, the researchers have made an introduction about the research topic, statement of the problem that will answer what the researchers want to know and the hypothesis (null and alternative), that will be the basis of the results. The researchers also included the objective of the research and the significant of the study. In chapter II, the researchers have researched about the review of the related literature and studies that includes the study habits and academic performances of the students. And other related studies that about in the researchers topic. In chapter III, the researchers include the discussion of method of research, method of collecting data, development of research instrument, preparation of the survey, and the sampling design. In chapter IV, the researchers have discussed the recorded results of the survey. The researchers also included the positive and negative results of the effect of study habits in the academic performance of 3rd year students in ERHS to avoid being bias. Also the researchers discussed the statistical test to be used in every problem to get the results from the hypothesis, whether null or alternative hypothesis.

Conclusion The researchers have conclude in statement of the problem number 2 that there is only a very small negative correlation between the study habits and academic performances in Social Study of the three sections of 3rd year students in ERHS. This result also answered the statement of the problem number 1,it means the study habits has no significant effect in the academic performance in Social Study of 3rd year students in ERHS. Recommendations The researchers recommend/suggest to use other study habits aside from the given by the researchers as long as the study habits can affect the academic performances of students and not only in Social Study but also in other subjects. The researchers also recommend/suggest to use other factors except study habits in affecting the academic performances of students. The researchers recommend to have other statistical test or statistical treatment to get the results of the survey.
