Introduction
Yuti (conjunction) and samasaptaka (opposition) of planets is an important phenomenon. When two planets are at the same longitude or 180 apart, they are akin to two people who are together or who are interacting closely. If two people who have a common agenda get together and they are in position to pursue that agenda, they may try to pursue the common agenda. That close interaction can trigger developments that result in the fulfillment or advancement of that agenda. I studied conjunctions and samasaptakas of planets in transit and their impact on key points in the natal chart. When key planets in conjunction in transit closely aspect or conjoin important natal points, it seems to trigger key events in life. In this research, I used divisional longitudes freely.
Principle
The principle I found is very simple: If two planets having an important role relating to some matter in the natal chart have a perfect conjunction or samasaptaka in transit and they closely conjoin or aspect the divisional longitude, in a relevant divisional chart, of a relevant point (planet or arudha pada), that may trigger an event in a few months. Perfect conjunctions and samasaptakas do happen in transit frequently, but very few of them affect sensitive natal points like planets and arudha padas closely. If we add the constraint that the planets in conjunction/samasaptaka in transit should also have an important role in the natal chart with respect to the matter shown by the sensitive natal point they are impacting in transit, it becomes even less frequent. It is more useful to take the conjunctions/samasaptakas between two slow moving planets or between one slow moving planet and one fast moving planet. This principle by itself may not help one time events. But, it may help increase our confidence in a possibility or narrow down when one has several large windows based on other techniques. This principle is expected to be applied in conjunction with other principles of Jyotish and is not meant to replace all standard principles of Jyotish. Moreover, principles involving quantitative correlations can someday be used to convince skeptics of the worth of astrology. In this research, I used partial aspects (e.g. 3/4th aspect on 4th and 8th houses) described by Parasara and also used the divisional longitudes of planets freely. I used true nodes. I used Jagannatha ayanamsa, which is a variation of Lahiri ayanamsa. It fixes the Chitra star at 180, instead of letting it wobble around 180 as happens with the regular Lahiri ayanamsa. It also fixes the two-dimensional plane onto which planets are projected, to the mean Sun-earth plane (which is also known as the Vishnu-nabhi plane), instead of projecting the planets to different two-dimensional planes at different times as happens with the regular Lahiri ayanamsa. All the calculations used are available in the free software Jagannatha Hora that can be downloaded at http://www.VedicAstrologer.org/jh.
Example 1: Marriage
Birthdata: 1971 April 27, 6:31 am (IST), Andheri, India (72e50, 19n07) Event: He got married on 2007 June 10. Ketu and Mars had a perfect samasaptaka at 21Le03 and 21Aq03 on 2007 April 26. In natal navamsa, UL is at 21Le35. Transit Ketu had a close conjunction and transit Mars had a close aspect on it. In natal D-9, Ketu is in the 7th house from lagna and Mars is the exalted 7th lord from Venus. In natal rasi chart, Ketu is in the first house from UL and Mars has 97.7% aspect on UL.
Thus, Ketu and Mars have a role to play in marriage. As they had an exact samasaptaka in transit very close to the natal D-9 divisional longitude of UL, it triggered events that led to the marriage.
Example 2: Marriage
Birthdata: 1970 April 4, 5:47:08 pm (IST), Machilipatnam, India (81e08, 16n10) Event: He got married on 1993 August 1. Jupiter and Venus had a perfect samasaptaka at 12Vi11 and 12Pi11 on 1993 May 3. In natal navamsa, 7th lord Ketu is at 13Vi13. Transit Jupiter had a close conjunction and transit Venus had a close aspect on it. In natal D-9, the 7th co-lord Mars is in Sagittarius with Jupiter. Jupiter is also the 7th lord in 7th in moolatrikona, from Moon and Venus. Venus is lagna lord. Moreover, Venus and Jupiter are on the 1st-7th house axis from UL in D-9. In natal rasi chart, Jupiter has 85.11% aspect on the 7th house from UL (UL and the 7th house from it are important for marriage according to Parasara) and Venus has 83.57% aspect on UL. Thus, Jupiter and Venus have a role to play in marriage. As they had an exact samasaptaka in transit very close to the natal D-9 divisional longitude of 7th lord, it triggered events that led to the marriage.
Example 3: Marriage
Birthdata: 1973 July 26, 9:48:10 pm (IST), Guntur, India (80e28, 16n18) Event: She got married on 1999 January 24 early morning. Saturn and Mars had a perfect samasaptaka at 3Ar30 and 3Li20 on 1999 May 3. In natal navamsa, lagna lord Sun is at 0Li17. Transit Saturn had a close aspect and transit Mars had a close conjunction with it. In natal D-9, Saturn owns the 7th house and Mars occupies it. Moreover, Mars is the lord of UL. In natal rasi chart, Mars has 93.47% aspect on UL and Saturn has 49.55% aspect on UL. Thus, Saturn and Mars have a role to play in marriage. As they had an exact samasaptaka in transit very close to the natal D-9 divisional longitude of D-9 lagna lord, it triggered events that led to the marriage.
Example 4: Marriage
Birthdata: 1970 October 5, 12:32 pm (IST), 80e21, 15n49 Event: He got married on 1999 January 24 early morning. Jupiter and Mars had a perfect samasaptaka at 24Aq25 and 24Le25 on 1998 November 7. In natal navamsa, UL is at 22Le35. Transit Jupiter had a close aspect and transit Mars had a close conjunction with it. In natal D-9, Jupiter owns the 7th house from lagna and from Venus. Venus lagna is stronger than lagna and Mars occupies the 7th house from it. Mars is also the 7th lord from Moon. In natal rasi chart, Mars has 92.59% aspect on UL and Jupiter has 66.09% aspect on UL. Thus, Jupiter and Mars have a role to play in marriage. As they had an exact samasaptaka in transit very close to the natal D-9 divisional longitude of UL, it triggered events that led to the marriage.
Example 5: Marriage
Birthdata: 1971 September 12, 8:25 am (IST), Guntur, India (80e28, 16n18) Event: She got married on 1993 August 1. Saturn and Mars had a perfect samasaptaka at 6Aq26 and 6Le26 on 1993 June 23. In natal navamsa, UL is at 9Sc44. Transit Mars had a close 4th house aspect and transit Saturn had a close 10th house aspect on it. In natal D-9, Saturn is in the 7th house and Mars is the 7th lord. In natal rasi chart, Saturn has 100% aspect on UL and Mars has 86.03% aspect on UL. Thus, Mars and Saturn have a role to play in marriage. As they had an exact samasaptaka in transit and closely aspected the natal D-9 divisional longitude of UL, it triggered events that led to the marriage.
Example 6: Marriage
Birthdata: 1976 April 25, 2:32 am (IST), Vijayawada, India (80e37, 16n31) Event: He got married on 2001 February 28. Saturn and Mars had a perfect samasaptaka at 0Ta16 and 0Sc16 on 2001 February 3. In natal navamsa, lagna lord Saturn in the 7th house is at 29Cn02. Transit Saturn had a 100% aspect on it using Parasaras rules. In natal D-9, Saturn is the lagna lord in the 7th house. Mars is the lord of UL in navamsa. In natal rasi chart, Mars has 99.23% aspect on UL and Saturn has 74.93% aspect on UL. Thus, Saturn and Mars have a role to play in marriage. As they had an exact samasaptaka in transit and one of them had an aspect on the D-9 divisional longitude of a key natal point of navamsa (lagna lord in 7th), it triggered events that led to the marriage.
Example 7: Childbirth
Birthdata: 1973 July 26, 9:48:10 pm (IST), Guntur, India (80e28, 16n18) Event: She had a child on 2003 June 21. Rahu and Venus had a perfect conjunction at 5Ta29 on 2003 June 9. In natal D-7, A5 (arudha of the 5th house) is at 6Le19. Transit Venus had a close 3/4th aspect on it. In natal D-7, Rahu is the 5th lord of children. Venus is the lagna lord. Thus, Rahu and Venus have a role to play in childbirth. As they had an exact conjunction in transit and Venus had an aspect on A5 of D-7, it caused childbirth.
Example 8: Childbirth
Birthdata: 1976 April 25, 2:32 am (IST), Vijayawada, India (80e37, 16n31) Event: He had a child on 2004 May 5. Rahu and Sun had a perfect conjunction at 17Ar21 on 2004 May 1. In natal D-7, lagna is at 15Ar14. Transit Rahu and Sun had a close conjunction with it.
In natal D-7, Sun is the 5th lord of children. Rahu is the 11th lord of gains, aspecting the 5th house of children. Thus, Rahu and Sun have a role to play in childbirth. As they had an exact conjunction in transit near D-7 lagna, it caused childbirth.
Example 9: Childbirth
Birthdata: 1970 April 4, 5:47:08 pm (IST), Machilipatnam, India (81e08, 16n10) Event: He had a child on 1996 February 18. Saturn and Venus had a perfect conjunction at 28Aq29 on 1996 February 2. In natal D-7, Venus is at 25Ta28. Transit Saturn and Venus had a close 3/4th aspect it. In natal D-7, Venus is the 5th lord of children. Saturn is the 9th lord of fortune in natal D-7 and 5th lord from lagna and Jupiter in natal rasi chart. Thus, Venus and Saturn have a role to play in childbirth. As they had an exact conjunction in transit and had a close 3/4th aspect on the 5th lord of natal D-7, it caused childbirth.
Event: He had an accident on 1995 May 27. Mercury at 11Ar49 and Mercury at 11Li49 had a perfect samasaptaka on 1995 April 19. In natal D-30 (chart of misfortune), Jupiter (6th lord of natal rasi chart) is at 11Li31. Transit Mercury had a close aspect and transit Rahu had a close conjunction with him. In natal D-30, Rahu (8th lord of natal rasi chart) afflicts lagna lord in lagna. Mercury is the 8th lord of mishaps. Thus, Rahu and Mercury have a role to play in accidents and other misfortune. As they had an exact samasaptaka in transit and had a close aspect/conjunction with the 6th lord of natal rasi chart, in D-30, it caused an accident that changed his life.
In natal D-4 (chart of residence and fortune), Mars is the 12th lord and Saturn is the 9th lord. Thus, Mars and Saturn have a role to play in going abroad. As they had an exact conjunction/aspect in transit on a sensitive point in natal rasi chart relating to going abroad, it gave a move to the foreign lands.
Jupiter at 1Sg11 and Mars at 1Ge11 had a perfect samasaptaka on 1960 September 10. In natal D-5 (chart of political power), lagna lord Ketu and GL lord Rahu are at 2Ge44. Transit Jupiter had a close aspect and transit Jupiter had a close conjunction with them. In natal D-5, Mars is the lagna lord of name and Jupiter is the 5th lord of power and Mars has a very close aspect on Jupiter. Thus, Mars and Jupiter have a role to play in giving name and power. As they had an exact samasaptaka in transit and had a close conjunction/aspect on the lagna lord and GL lord of natal D-5, it gave power.
Mars at 12Pi26 and Jupiter at 12Cn26 were transiting in perfect trines on 1896 May 28. In natal D-20 (chart of spiritual evolution), Saturn (12th lord aspecting 12th, from AK atma karaka Moon, showing overcoming a limited self-identification) is at 11Cn28. Transit Jupiter had a close conjunction with him. In natal D-20, the cusp of the 12th house from AK Moon is at 25Cp25. Mars has 95.6% aspect (based on Parasaras formulas for quantifying longitude-based aspects). Jupiter has 90.5% aspect on the lord of the 12th house from AK (Saturn). Thus, Mars and Jupiter have a role to play in giving a realization of true Self1. As they had a perfect trinal transit and one of them had a close conjunction with the 12th lord from AK in natal D-20, it gave a glimpse of Self.
AK or chara aatma karaka restricts self-awareness and self-identification with a limited and restricted sense of self. Once this cover is removed, one becomes aware of unlimited true Self. The 12th house from AK shows giving up a limited self-identification. That is why Parasara links the 12th house from AK with moksha or nirvana (liberation). 2 Nirvikalpa Samadhi is a state where I-ness (individualized Self) merges back into Brahman/Aatman (undifferentiated Self or the Supreme Cosmic Essence) and all objectification and duality ceases. Observer, observed and observation merge into one, without any differentiation whatsoever. Recent yogis such as Trailinga Swami, Shirdi Sai Baba, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Ramana Maharshi and Swami Sivananda are known to have reached that state and also beyond it (i.e. simultaneously being absorbed in duality and nonduality and realizing their oneness completely).
Thus, Mars and Saturn have a role to play in giving spiritual realization. As they had a perfect conjunction close to a sensitive natal point in D-20 relating to the 12th house from AK and lagna, it brought a samadhi.
Observations
The correlations I found in this research are too good to merely be random coincidences. I am convinced that there is something really worthwhile here. In fact, principles such as this, which show nice quantitative correlations, may prove useful someday to convince critics of astrology that astrology is not humbug. Divisional Longitudes This research article, along with the previously published research articles titled Stationary Planets in Transit, Transit of Nakshatra Dasa Lord: A Specific Principle, Padamsas and Transits: A Research Finding and Transits and Vimsottari Dasa Progression: A Specific Correlation, establishes that divisional longitudes are a valid concept and that there are some valid transit principles based on them. Researchers will do well to consider longitudes of planets in divisional charts and not ignore them. Special Divisional Charts Research into divisional charts not mentioned in the available manuscripts of Parasaras teachings, such as D-5, D-6, D-8, D-11 etc, perhaps hold value. The principle described in this article can perhaps aid in the researches into special divisional charts. Objective principles help one draw more confident conclusions. Impact of Birthtime Divisional longitudes of progressed positions of planets are not that sensitive to birthtime errors. However, we are also using the significations of planets in natal divisional chart and we need an accurate lagna in the divisional chart used. For example, suppose Mercury is the 10th lord in natal rasi chart and a planet closely conjoins, in transit, the D-10 divisional longitude of progressed Mercury based on Vimsottari dasa progression.

Some information about the yogi of examples 24 and 25 can be read at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/vedic-wisdom/message/3481 (On Manish and Sadhana by Narasimha) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/vedic-wisdom/message/3440 (Rama Naam Satya Hai 1 by Rajarshi) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/vedic-wisdom/message/3472 (Rama Naam Satya Hai 2 & 3 by Rajarshi)
Suppose that transit planet is either the 9th lord or the 8th lord in the natal D-10. In one case, it may bring fortune in career and a fall in the other. We need to be confident of the natal D-10 lagna. By the way, this principle can perhaps be used in birthtime rectification in addition to standard techniques. Recommendation I strongly recommend researchers to stick to Jagannatha ayanamsa, true nodes and the house system I deduced earlier based on BPHS (0-30 deg from lagna being the 1st house, 30-60 deg being the 2nd house and so on) for fruitful research into simple and replicable principles like this.
Conclusion
A simple principle related to a correlation of the transit longitudes of planets at the time of perfect conjunction or samasaptaka and divisional longitudes of natal points is explained and illustrated using many examples. If you like this knowledge, please feel free to refine it, use it and spread it. If not, please leave it. It is hoped that intelligent and sincere students and researchers of this divine subject will take this knowledge further and contribute to a renaissance in Jyotish and other knowledge related to rishis.
