Some Beautiful Jihad Stories

Salim Mawla Abu Hudayfah

He read the story of Salim ibn Abi Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) on the day of Yamamah, the day in which the armies clashed and the ranks weakened. When Salim took the banner, some of the others said to him, We fear that we will be attacked from your direction, O Salim. He replied with his famous statement which rings in the ears of those whose hearts are alive: What a terrible carrier of the Quran I would be were you to be attacked from my direction. This is how the people of knowledge and people of the Quran and Hadeeth used to be. {Sheikh Usama bin Laden-19 martyrs video}. A more detailed biography of Salim Mawla Abi Hudayfah can be found from the book 'Companions of the Prophet'

Alb Arsalaan
The history books speak to us of another land that carried upon it believers in Allah, the army of Alb Arsalaan. Coming home from one of their battles, As they made their way home to Khuraasan, a messenger rode up to Alb Arsalaan and whispered to him: The emperor of Constantiniyya heard of your army and is bringing an army of 600 thousand to crush you - led by the war generalRomanis! By Allah they did not gather than many fighters for no other reason that to quell the fear they had of Islam, the cowardice they tasted in their hearts. As Arsalaan swallowed the news he glanced into the eyes of every one of his 15 thousand Mujahids, knowing that there was little hope of victory. This faction nursing their wounds, another weeping over the brothers that fell, a third weeping for losing the chance of Jannah. His head drooped at the sentence the messenger had brought and then he picked his heart up like a lion. Look brothers and sisters at the numbers. 600 thousand prepared to fight 15 thousand! Is this any physical strength that people speak of? No, by Allah, it is the strength of Iman, the strength of Aqeedah, the strength of hearts filled with certainty in Allah and His Messenger and the Final Day. Isn't that enough? What was Arsalaan to do? Should he continue back to his home and let the forces of evil destroy his nation with their vice, Shahaawaat? Or should he stand like a rock in their face even if it meant his and his armies death? A few moments, and the rays of Iman shone from his heart.

Arsalaan slipped into his tent and dressed himself in the towels he would be buried in, fragrancing himself with hanoot. He then addressed the entire army, saying: "Today Islam is in danger! Today Muslims are in danger! And I fear that Laa ilaaha illaa Allaah will be wiped away from our land!" He then shouted, "Waa Islaamaah! (O Islaam!!) Waa Islaamaah!! (O Islaam!!). Look at me, I have worn the towels of my coffin and have fragranced myself with hanoot. Whoever wants Jannah, let them dress as I have dressed! We are going to fight under the shade of Laa ilaaha illa Allah until we are destroyed or the flag of Laa ilaaha illaa Allah is raised!" In moments the entire army stepped into the quarters and all 15 thousand Mujahids came out in the garments of their coffin. The fragrance of Hanoot was on all their bodies, the wind of Jannat Al firdows blew in their faces. The sky erupted with the armies shouts of `Allahu Akbar!! Allaahu Akbar!! Yaa Khayl Allah uthbuti!! Yaa Khayl Allah irkabee!!' Allahu Akbar! Have you ever seen an army stepping onto a plain that they know - with little doubt they will be resurrected from on the Day of Judgement? Have you ever seen an army wrapped in the thobes of their coffin before beginning the battle? Have you ever smelt the fragrance of death Hanoot - hovering 15 thousand believers in Allah? That day, the Kuffar did. The armies clashed - one believing in Allah and desiring the appointment with Allah, the other disbelieving in Allah and hating to meet him. The fighting was severe, Allahu Akbar cut through the sky. Every Mujahid stepped forward, on their tongues were the words, "I am coming to you, O Allah, in haste so that you may be pleased with me." Heads flew and skulls fell to the ground and blood flowed. As the dust clouds softened, the flag of Islam rose high, the crusaders fled in all directions. Someone shouted, "The Romans are defeated and their general - Romanis - has been captured." {From 'The Worlds Bravest People' by By Muhammad Alshareef}

Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl and His Thirsty Companions

At the battle of Yarmuk he plunged into the attack as a thirsty person after cold water on a blistering hot day. In one encounter in which the Muslims were under heavy attack, Ikrimah penetrated deep into the ranks of the Byzantines. Khalid ibn al-Walid rushed up to him and said, "Don't, Ikrimah. Your death will be a severe blow to the Muslims." "Let us carry on, Khalid," said Ikrimah, now at the peak of motivation. "You had the privilege of being with the Messenger of God before this. As for myself and my father, we were among his bitterest enemies. Leave me now to atone for what I have done in the past. I fought the Prophet on

many occasions. Shall I now flee from the Byzantines? This shall never be." Then calling out to the Muslims, he shouted, "Who shall pledge to fight until death?" Four hundred Muslims including al-Harith ibn Hisham and Ayyash ibn Abi Rabiah responded to his call. They plunged into the battle and fought heroically without the leadership of Khalid ibn al-Walid. Their daring attack paved the way for a decisive Muslim victory. When the battle was over, the bodies of three wounded mujahideen lay sprawled on the battleground, among them Al-Harith ibn Hisham, Ayyash ibn Abi Rabi'ah and Ikrimah ibn abi Jahl. Al-Harith called for water to drink. As it was brought to him, Ayyash looked at him and Harith said: "Give it to Ayyash." By the time they got to Ayyash, he had just breathed his last. When they returned to al-Harith and Ikrimah, they found that they too had passed away. The companions prayed that God may be pleased with them all and grant them refreshment from the spring of Kawthar in Paradise, a refreshment after which there is thirst no more. {From "Companions of the Prophet}

Abdullah ibn Jahsh and his friend Sa'd (radhi Allahu anhu )
There is an unforgettable story involving Abdullah ibn Jahsh and his friend Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas concerning an incident that took place during the Battle of Uhud. Let us leave Sa'd to tell the story: During the battle, Abdullah came to me and said, "Aren't you making a dua to God?" "Yes," said I. So we moved aside and I prayed, "O Lord, when I meet the enemy, let me meet a man of enormous strength and fury. Then grant me victory over him that I might kill him and acquire spoils from him." To this my prayer, Abdullah said Ameen and then he prayed: "LET ME MEET A MAN OF GREAT STANDING AND ENORMOUS FURY. I SHALL FIGHT HIM FOR YOUR SAKE, O LORD, AND HE SHALL FIGHT ME. HE SHALL TAKE ME AND CUT OFF MY NOSE AND EARS AND WHEN I MEET YOU ON THE MORROW YOU WILL SAY, "FOR WHAT WERE YOUR NOSE AND EAR CUT OFF?" AND I WOULD REPLY, "FOR YOUR SAKE AND FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR PROPHET." AND THEN YOU WOULD SAY, "YOU HAVE SPOKEN THE TRUTH . . ." Sa'd continues the story: The prayer of Abdullah ibn Jahsh was better than mine. I saw him at the end of the day. He was killed and mutilated and in fact his nose and his ear were hung on a tree with a thread.

'Uqbah bin Nafi'

And here is the story of 'Uqbah bin Nafi': He ('Uqbah) intended to take a place (town) in Africa, so as to be a place for the Muslim army and to protect their families and properties from revolt against them by the natives ofthe country. So he betook himself to the place of Al-Qirwan, and it was a muddy place, full of every kind of beasts of prey (lions, tigers, leopards, etc.) and snakes and others, etc. So he ('Uqbah) invoked Allaah (swt) and Allaah answered to his invocation, he then said: "O snakes and wild beasts of prey! We are the companions of Allaah's Messenger (Muhammad) go away from us as we are landing here, and afterwards if we found any (of you wild beasts and snakes) we will kill you." So the people saw that day, the (wild) animals and snakes carrying their offspring, shifting from that place... And a great number of natives (Al-Bar-Bar) saw (all) that and embraced Islaam. (Taken from 'Jihad in the Qur'aan and Sunnah By SHEIKH ABDULLAH BIN MUHAMMAD BIN HUMAID'-

Battle of Yarmook
Both the armies confronted each other at Yarmook. The Roman General, Mahan, scornfully addressed his counterpart, Khalid bin Waleed (ra), and said: It looks as if poverty, nakedness and starvation has compelled you to come here. If you wish I am willing to give each of you ten dinars, expensive clothes and good food. You can take these things and leave. Next year too I can send you these things; you do not have to take the trouble to come here. Khalid bin Waleed (ra) was enraged at hearing these scornful and arrogant words, and answered: MAHAN LISTEN TO ME VERY CAREFULLY! YOU ARE MISTAKEN ABOUT THE REASON WHY WE ARE HERE. WE ARE PEOPLE WHO DRINK THE BLOOD OF OUR OPPONENTS. WE HAVE HEARD THAT ROMAN BLOOD IS VERY DELICIOUS, AND WE HAVE COME HERE TO ENJOY IT.

Bedouin
A bedouin came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) and after accepting Islam expressed his wish to accompany him in the expedition. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) asked some of his companions to take care of him and settle his needs. When the Muslims captured one of the forts and won a large booty, the man had taken out a herd of cattle for grazing. The spoils were distributed among the combatants apportioning the Bedouin also of his share. When he was given his part, he took it to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) and asked, "What is this?" The Prophet (Peace be upon him) explained that it was his share of the booty of war, but he said, "I didn't come to you for it." Then pointing to his throat he continued, "I followed you hoping that I would be hit by an arrow, entitling me of Paradise." The Prophet (Peace be upon him) replied, "If you desire it so, God will do likewise."

Then, in a subsequent battle at Khaybar the Bedouin was among those killed in the encounter. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) asked, "Is it the same man?" When the companions replied in the affirmative, the Prophet (Peace be upon him) remarked, "He was true to God and God made his wish come true." The Prophet (Peace be upon him) shrouded his corpse with his own mantle and recited the funeral service for him. Thereafter, he said, "O Allah, thy servant had come to migrate in Thy way and was killed for Thy sake. I bear witness to it." {Zad al-Ma'ad, Ibn Qayyim Al Jawziyyah (rh), Vol. I, p. 394}

Umm Amarah: The Prophet's Shield at Uhud

Umm 'Umara was blessed with many honours, amongst these her presence at Uhud, al-Hudaybiyya, Khaybar, the Fulfilled Umra, Hunayn, and the Battle of Yamama. But her most noble role came about during the battle of Uhud. Umm 'Umara set out to the battle with her husband, Ghaziya, and her two sons. Her inhad been to give water to the wounded, but Allah had planned for her a more rewarding role. So she set out with her family with a waterskin, and arrived at the battle field during the beginning of

the day. The Muslims had the upper hand, and she went to see how the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) was. But then the Muslims committed a fatal error - seeing the Quraysh on the retreat, they ran towards the booty, ignoring the Prophet's command to remain on the hill. Khalid bin Walid, (who hadn't embraced Islam yet), seeing the open flank, made a charge against the Muslims and suddenly the tide had swung towards the Quraysh. The Muslims panicked and began to flee, leaving behind only the Prophet (s.a.w) and a handful of his Companions. Among these was Umm Umara. Seeing the Muslims flee, Umm Umara ran to the defense of the Prophet and took up arms, along with her husband and two sons. The Prophet noticed that she had no shield, and so said to one of the retreating men: "Give your shield to the one who is fighting." So he handed her the shield, and she defended the Prophet of Allah with it, using also the bow and arrow along with a sword. She was attacked by horsemen, but never wavered nor felt fear. She later boldly claimed, "If they had been on foot as we were, we would have trounced them, Allah willing." Abdullah ibn Zayed, her son, was wounded during the battle. His wound bled profusely. His mother ran to him and bandaged his wounds, and then commanded him, "Go and fight the people, my son!" The Prophet (s.a.w) admired her sense of sacrifice, and commended her, "Who can endure what you can endure, Umm 'Umara!" Suddenly, the man who had struck her son advanced, and the Prophet called out to her, "This is the one who struck your son." She bravely confronted the man, who her very son described as being like a great tree trunk, and struck at his leg, sending him to his knees. The Messenger of Allah smiled so much his teeth became visible, and remarked, "You have retaliated, Umm 'Umara!". Having finished him off, the Prophet then said "Praise be to Allah who has given you victory and delighted you over your enemy and let you enjoy your revenge directly." At one stage, the Prophet (s.a.w) was left alone, so taking the opportunity, the enemy Ibn Qumay'a charged at the Prophet, shouting "Show me Muhammad! I will not be saved if he is saved!" So Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr, along with some other of the Companions, dashed to the protection of the Prophet. Umm 'Umara was among them, and began fiercely striking at the enemy of Allah, even though he was wearing double armour. Ibn Qumay'a managed to strike a blow at her neck, leaving a serious wound. The Prophet quickly called on her son "Your mother! Your mother! Bind her wound! May Allah bless you, the people of a house! The stand of your mother is better than the stand of so-and-so. May Allah have mercy on you, people of a house! The stand of your foster father is better than the stand of so-and-so. May Allah have mercy on you, people of a house!" Umm Umara, seeing ' the Prophet's pleasure on her determination and valour, earnestly requested "Ask Allah to make us your companions in the Garden!" So he said "O Allah, make them my companions in the Garden." And this was the desire of Umm 'Umara, to which she replied "I do not care what afflicts me in this world!" That day, she received thirteen wounds, and was treated for her neck wound for a complete year. She also participated in the Battle of Yamama, where she received eleven wounds and lost her hand. Her courageous character earned her the respect of all the Companions, especially the Khalifa's who would visit her and pay special attention to her. 'Umar bin Khattab (r.a.a) was brought some silk garments which contained excellent quality material.

One of the people remarked "This garment is worth such-and-such (meaning how expensive it was). You should send it to the wife of 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar, Safiyya bint Abi 'Ubayd." 'Umar (r.a.a) however did not desire such a garment for his daughter in law. "That is something which I will not give to Ibn 'Umar. I will send it to someone who is more entitled to it than her - Umm 'Umara Nusayba bint Ka'b. On the day of Uhud, I heard the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) say, 'Whenever I looked to the right or left I saw her fighting in front of me'." This was the life of Umm ' Umara, the warrior who stood when many fled, who sent her wounded son back into the thick of the battle, and was prepared to lose her life to save the Prophet's. In return, she received the du'a for the Prophet's companionship in Paradise.
