2012 ANNUAL TARGETS - WRITING


TARGET FOR RAISING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT IN WRITING Koputaroa School Charter Strategic Goals: Goal 1: To focus on high quality learning and teaching and to encourage and support the growth of Tikanga Maori. Goal 3: To sustain, grow and further encourage whanau and community partnerships within our rural environment (whanaungatanga). Goal 5: To engage in regular self review to monitor and evaluate areas.

Strategic Objectives: - Support, promote and improve teacher effectiveness and pedagogy. - To use the Teaching as Inquiry model to develop teacher effectiveness and improve student outcomes. - Identify and support those students below or well below the National Standard. - Sustain our focus on increasing the achievement in writing for all our children. - Use the Koputaroa Writing Matrix to monitor, evaluate and identify the strengths and next learning steps of our children. Curriculum Area: English - Writing Key Competencies: - Using Language, Symbols and Texts - Thinking - Managing Self - Participating and Contributing - Relating to Others Tenets from our Charter that we aim for our children: - be confident, independent learners - be self-motivated and self-managing - be inquisitive, creative learners who take risks and can problem solve Annual Aims: - Monitor the achievement and progress of all children through the use of the Koputaroa School Writing Matrix. - To implement Teaching as Inquiry in Writing to improve teacher effectiveness and pedagogy with the desired outcome of improving student achievement. - Focus on skill teaching and development as opposed to teaching and learning genre. - Increase the number of children achieving At or Above the National Standard in Writing.

Koputaroa School Annual Targets 2012

2012 Annual Achievement Target: To increase and raise the number of Year 7 and Year 8 students achieving At or Above the National Standard by the end of 2012. When compared to the number of Year 6 and Year 7 students who had achieved At or Above the National Standard in 2011 and reducing the number who had achieved Below or Well Below the National Standard in 2011. All children to make progress towards being At or Above the National Standard by the end of the year. Baseline Data: Analysis of our 2011 data showed that we had 4/11 (36%) of Year 6 children and 8/25 (32%) of Year 7 children Below or Well Below the National Standard. Analysis of our 2011 data showed that we had 7/11 (64%) of Year 6 children and 16/25 (64%) of Year 7 children At the National Standard, with only 4% Above the Standard. We aim to have an increase in the number of children Above the Standard in Year 7 by the end of 2012. Planned Actions
- Implement the Teaching as Inquiry process through our Cluster Initiative with a focus on developing and improving Writing. - Writing Moderation to occur within school across staff. - Writing Moderation to occur between our Cluster Schools to moderate a common understanding. - Staff Meetings focused on staff professional development. - Team Meetings focused on student progress and achievement. Regular monitoring of children. - Formative Assessment to form the basis of writing teaching and learning. - Employ a Support Teacher to support those children who require additional assistance. - Learning Walks focused on teacher effectiveness, student engagement and development of writing. - Walkabouts focused on effective practice and increasing teacher pedagogy. - To introduce Transactional Writing earlier in the Kowhai Team.
