Unit 3 Discussion Board due Saturday 21 January 2012 The purpose of this discussion board is to encourage reading, writing, and interaction with your fellow EH 1020 students. So much of what you do in this course is solitary work: you are either researching by yourself or drafting some portion of your final Research Paper by yourself. The classroom, however, can be a place where students come together to read texts and discuss themdiscuss what the texts mean and what the texts mean to them personally. Therefore, you should think of these discussion boards as a place for that interaction. There will be a brief reading assignment that will give the class a core theme to discuss for the week, but it is up to you how you will discuss and react to the reading. Below are some questions to get you started. They are meant as a starting place; you do not need to feel as though you should answer all of them. The idea is that you will find new ways to respond and react to texts that you read, apart from the more rigorous academic work you are doing with your research paper. Reading assignment from Strategies for Writing Successful Research Papers: Ezekiel J. Emanuel, The Problem with Single-Payer Plans, pp. 259-265 Holly Dressel, Has Canada Got the Cure? pp. 265-270 What are your thoughts about this health care debate? You may keep in mind that the essays above were written before the health care changes that have recently been made, but even so, the debate over health care is still a raging one in this country. What does health care mean to you? What would you like to see out of a health care system? What rules and regulations should be in place? What would the ideal system look like for you, or what would it accomplish? If you are not very invested in the health care debate, then just reflect upon your own personal circumstances. How does the debate make you feel? How do the ideas presented by Emanuel and Dressel affect your daily circumstances? For you, is health care a political question or a personal one? If you quote from the readings above, use quotation marks, and supply in-text citations with the authors last name, date of publication, and page number. Citation information for these readings may be found in the credits, Strategies for Writing Successful Research Papers, pages 299-302 (Lester et al, 2011). Note that the information provided there is not in APA format. If you use outside sources (for example, if you quote a news article), you need to use in-text citations and include reference list citations.

Unit 2 Discussion Board due Saturday 14 January 2012

Address the following prompt for this week. You are not responsible for answering each of the questions below. These questions are meant as a starting place, so feel free to elaborate on them or to allow your writing to go away from these questions entirely. What is your writing experience? Have you ever had to write a research paper or another project that required a great deal of research and process? How did you feel about the process? Did you enjoy it? Was it challenging? What are some of your concerns or excitements about the research project that you are currently doing for this course? What do you hope to learn or accomplish through this specific project? What tips, suggestions, or advice do you have for anyone who might be struggling with the process of writing the research paper (or with anxiety about the process)? Student Response due Monday 16 January 2012 Roger Haynes In my job I have to write on a daily basis. This includes writing policies and regulations, mishap investigation reports, inspection reports, an complaints. I have never written a research paper as such, but I have conducted research in order to write regulations and conducted an investigation that includes research. I thought I was pretty good at writing, but have found this is a lot different and more challenging. The APA style is a HUGE challenge for me. I hope it gets easier down the road. I am pretty excited about my current project. In talking with some of my friends and family about the topic they have all laughed and said they would help (interviews). I am sure I will be required to write many research papers in the future, so I hope this is a lesson I can learn well and become confident in. Adams Reaves

My writing experience was somewhat limited until recently. I was thrust into a position of more responsibility at work and quickly found myself writing on a daily basis. This included writing proposals, business case analysis, daily and weekly reports and tons of emails. I can remember writing a research paper for work that was investigative in nature. I traveled all over Afghanistan interviewing people and obtaining facts on certain instances that had occurred during part failures. I compiled all this information and submitted a report on my findings. I believe this was my first and only research paper. I can remember a bit of anxiety due to the audience that I had to present this paper to. I hope to excel my writing ability in this course and I know that writing well is a very important success criteria within my current occupation.
