Seam

Seam allowance: A predetermined amount of material between the edge of component parts of the garment and the seam line. Too small a seam allowance greatly reduces seam strength, especially in woven fabrics. A seam allowance is measured from the cut edge of fabric to the main line of stitches. Width of a seam allowance is often a factor in judging garment quality, reducing yarn slippage and providing fabric for attraction.
Seam allowance

Seam binding: A narrow fabric attached to seams or cut edges of fabric to prevent fraying or raveling. Seam damage: Change in physical condition of fabric or thread that reduces seam acceptability; needle cutting, fabric rupture, yarn slippage, thread breakage. Seam failure: The effective breakdown of a seam due to rupture of the sewing thread, rupture of yarns in yarn.

Seam fraying: Descriptive of fabric yarns running parallel to the seam in the turning becoming loose and falling out from a raw edge.
