RESEARCH PROPOSAL Quality of Service in Directional Mobile Ad Hoc Network

RESEARCH BACKGROUND Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs) are becoming popular since it can be set up anywhere
without the need for an external infrastructure. Quality of service in MANETs is challenged due to its mobility and limited resources. Using directional antennas can enhance the performance of MANETs by increasing traffic and decreasing probability of interception [1]. A new MAC and routing protocols suitable for directional MANETs need to be designed to best utilize directional antennas.

OBJECTIVES

Development of a routing algorithm and a MAC layer protocol for efficient channel access in directional mobile ad hoc network. Using simulator to evaluate the effect of the combination of routing and MAC layer protocol to achieve the full benefits of directional MANETs. Analyze the algorithm and the protocol in a real environment under various conditions.

LITERATURE REVIEW
Of the several experiments using directional antennas, changing physical and access layer is considered to be the major research. In [02] by using shortest path algorithms with the integration of directional and non-directional links into the same network, a better result can be achieved than separating sub-nets were used for the directional and non-directional links. In [3] the DDSR routing protocol could significantly improve the system throughput performance for simultaneous transmission of multimedia information over multiple routes by the capability of minimizing inter-path and intra-path interference.

METHODOLOGY

Some of the MANETs scenarios using both non-directional and directional antennas will be simulated and evaluated performance. This work is carried out by using a simulation tool such as NS2 with the existing routing algorithms and MAC layer protocols. The proposed algorithm will be implemented and applied to the existing MANETs scenarios to improve the efficiency. Link delays, loss rates, error rates and bandwidth estimation will be measured to analyze the quality of service of directional MANETs. A real network is selected to carry out some tests to get experiment in real environment.

RESEARCH OUTCOMES

An optimized routing algorithm and an efficient MAC protocol for directional MANETs will be developed. The enhanced performance and capabilities of MANETs when using directional antennas will be discovered.
