PhenoFab plant research facility of German-Dutch consortium receives an investment of Food Future
The companies LemnaTec (Germany) and KeyGene (the Netherlands) have received a major investment for their joint PhenoFab R&D facility of Food Future. Food Future is an INTERREG project of the European Union, stimulating and supporting international and innovative cooperation between companies in North Rhine Westphalia (Germany) and East Netherlands. The investment is meant for the development of new methods in the field of digital 3D imaging of crops growing on a robotized conveyor belt. The research performed in the PhenoFab greenhouse facility, aims at the development of improved crops like tomato and pepper, but also maize and rice. Major targets of improvements are higher yield, better nutritional quality, contributions to health and enhanced sustainability of crop production. The PhenoFab R&D facility is one of the first commercial facilities in this field and has become operational in 2011, at KeyGenes facilities in Wageningen based on LemnaTec technology. Roger van Hoesel of Food Valley about the collaboration: We are very proud that KeyGene and LemnaTec have esthablished this PhenoFab facility and we have strongly supported this initiative. This kind of interregional Dutch-German innovation initiatives fits perfectly within the mission of Food Valley, to stimulate knowledge-intensive activities in our region. It also contributes to solutions for the development of new crops and helps to reduce or prevent problems in agro food production.
