Canyon Ridge Debate Team

Courtney Bertoni Staff Writer
Canyon Ridge High Schools very own debate team definitely went for the gold at the Treasure Valley Invitational Speech/Senate tournament on January 13 and 14. The debate team came home with numerous wins after a long weekend at the Frank Church Memorial Debate Competition. Cliff Hall, the best coach in Twin Falls according to his students, could not stop talking about his pride for the CRHS Debate Team. The debaters not only made their school proud, they also put Twin Falls City on the map in the academic battle. In the entirety of Twin Falls, for the first time in eight years, a Twin Falls debate team brought home a Sweepstakes Trophy. This signifies awards based on the number of people entered. Out of 580 students from all around the state of Idaho, fourteen students from Canyon Ridge won awards. Many of the fourteen students brought home more than one achievement in varied events. This feat, overwhelming for many schools, was grasped when CRHS aced the tournament and added many new trophies, as well as the large overall trophy, to Canyon Ridges trophy case. Friday, the 13th of January, many students placed in their respective speech events. Numerous competitors entered in every event and listed are the CRHS students who overpowered the competition. Placing 3rd in Rookie Panel Discussion, Efrain Venegas and Justice Straub both did a marvelous job competing. Ivan Garcia also did very well in Rookie Panel Discussion and deserves recognition for an excellent job. In Varsity Panel Discussion, Hannah Kern pulled out a 3rd place win. Novice Serious Interpretation brought around a 3rd place win for Alyxis Cederstrom. Michelle Keyes did a great job and scored a 3rd place win in Varsity Serious Interpretation. Novice Impromptu brought around a 2nd place win for Heaven Marsh and a 3rd place win for Elizabeth Hill. Elizabeth also won a 3rd place medal for Original Oratory. Michelle and Todd Keyes took 2nd with their emotional Varsity Duo Interpretation. The following Saturday the 14th brought around more trophies and awards for the CRHS debate team. Justice Straub placed 1st in Congress and also had Best P.O. Tyler Schmechel also won 3rd place in Congress. Placing 1st in Varsity Public Forum, the brother/sister team of Michelle and Todd Keyes overcame the competition. Also placing 1st in Rookie Public Forum, Heaven Marsh and Nick Ridgeway did marvelous. Elizabeth Hill and Hannah Kern placed 3rd in Rookie Public Forum. Ivan Garcias and Efrain Venegas also did an excellent job in Rookie Public Forum. Alyxis Cederstrom placed 2nd in Rookie lincoln Douglas and she had a really great day in debate. Also in the categories of Best Vocabulary and Best Dressed, Rachel Tilley took the competition by storm. Allison Desler stole the show with Best Hair and Most Out-Going. Congratulations to CRHS Debate Team and every accomplishment that all the debaters achieved. Every win was due to long hours of hard work and preparation. Mr. Hall states, I may never have been as proud of a team. As the year progresses, the debate team just keeps increasing wins at each tournament. Great job Canyon Ridge Debate!

TEN WAYS

90s Toons
Autumn Myers Staff Writer
SpongeBob Squarepants is an animated television show that first aired in 1999, but did you know that it is the only Nicktoon from the 90s that hasnt ended yet? For many of us born in the 90s, hearing this kills our cartoon-filled hearts. Sadly many of a 90s kids favorite TV shows have ended, most of which do not even go into syndication. This is because they have now been replaced by new television shows, which are aimed at the new generation. Many of us may remember watching cartoons from Nickelodeon that first started airing in the 1990s such as: Rugrats, All Grown Up, CatDog, Hey Arnold!, Jimmy Neutron, Rocket Power, The Wild Thornberrys, Doug, Chalkzone, All That, Kenan and Kel, and The Amanda Show. When asked what show he watched the most growing up, Chance Koretos, junior, answers, I watched a lot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but the cartoon I watched the most was probably Rugrats! I loved that show! Kylie Hopkinson, junior, also commented, I watched a lot of Rugrats. If I had the choice of bringing a show back though, I would choose CatDog. From Cartoon Network, one may remember: Dexters Laboratory, Cow & Chicken, Johnny Bravo, The Powerpuff Girls, Ed Edd & Eddy, and Courage the Cowardly Dog. These shows are not the only ones that a 90s kid had watched growing up, but they are the ones that had started in the 1990s. These shows gave us 90s kids something to look forward each day. Reruns were never looked down upon, only praised. We can all agree that these shows from the 1990s beat the shows that are currently being aired on Cartoon Network. Every 90s kid can remember a time long ago when Cartoon Network played CARTOONS. Now the channel seems to broadcast live action shows at least half the time. Such as Hole in the Wall, Dude, What Would Happen, and Destroy, Build, Destroy. If one is fortunate enough to have not seen these shows, consider thy self lucky and dont turn on the television. The list of wonderful memories doesnt end there. There were various other channels that broadcasted a 90s kids favorite shows. Other classics one may remember include: Scooby Doo, The Flintstones, Tom and Jerry, The Jetsons, Yogi Bear, The Smurfs, Popeye, and the all mighty Pokmon (which after 700 episodes is still airing). Television shows from the 1990s are still loved to this day by many. Just thinking about a favorite show, or getting the rare opportunity of seeing it once again, brings a bright smile to ones face. These shows are what made our childhood better, 90s shows had great humor, and actually had some good morals to the story. Today, we can only hope to help the new generation by sitting them down and pulling out the dusty VHS, praying that it wont eat the last Rugrats cassette.

Teacher Profile: Su Dolecheck

Sarah Pak Staff Writer
On December 5, 1961, Mrs. Su Dolecheck was born. Shes 50 years old and loves St Nicholas Day, which is December 6, the day after her birthday. She recalls being a child and her best friend coming back to school the next day always saying St. Nicholas came! and she would always feel so angry because he never came when it was her birthday. So, she promised herself that she and her family would always, always, always celebrate St. Nicholas Day. Mrs. Dolecheck reflects on the day her mom told her she was adopted. When she went to go meet her birth family, she was 18. She recalls her dad saying I love you and she will never ever forget that because he never really said it. So she asked him, why now? and he replied with, Because I was scared you werent going to come back. But she did; she loves her family very much. Mrs. Dolecheck got her teaching certificate in Idaho, but first she graduated from Austin High School in Austin, MN in 1980. She attended university of Minnesota and graduated with a degree in science and animal science-molecular genetics in 1984. She wasnt real fond of the subject in high school and fell into it when she couldnt find a job and the professor hired her. She met her husband, Tom, at her best friends wedding where he was the best man. Hes from Montana and wanted to move out west, which brought them to Idaho. Tom found a job in lewiston, and that is where all four of their children were born. In 2000, Potlatch Corporation downsized and Tom lost his job; this is what brought the family to Twin Falls in 2001. Her eldest daughter, Charlotte, is student teaching and second eldest, Karmela, plans to graduate from uSu in the spring with a 3.97 GPA. Kimberly, her third daughter, is a resident forest fighter and her youngest, baby Mark, will graduate from CRHS and is currently president of FFA. From the time she was little, everyone around her told her she would be a very good teacher. She always disagreed, saying, No. I wont be able to be nice to the parents. She took the opportunity to become a math teacher when she was Mr. Dickinsons paraeducator in his history class in 2003. He encouraged her to apply for the opening math teacher spot. She says, So really its all Mr. Dickinsons fault that I became a math teacher. At the time they were kind of stuck with me. The question Mrs. Dolecheck hates the most is, what is your goal as a teacher? I asked anyways and she replied with, I want to make a difference in the life of at least one student. And to get there, she builds relationships with her students; personal and academic. Mrs. Dolecheck loves to read and garden, and enjoys sewing and cross-stitching. However she says, when do I have time? Spending time with family is another favorite. As for future plans, next year she will be teaching two Ell classes and that is a new program theyre trying to work on. Rumor has it she will also be teaching statistics and calculus. But for the most part, her main plan is to just enjoy life.

CRHS: Most eligible bachelor(ette)

Justice Straub Opinion Editor/ Photography
In todays world there are plenty of single men and women, but what are the chances you actually know theyre single? Thats where I come in. Im here for this special Valentines Day Issue to let you know who the most eligible bachelor at Canyon Ridge is. Sure there are some good looking guys like Mr. Gemar and Mr. Davis, but theyre taken. Too bad Blake Maughan is in newspaper because I cant write about him, but there you go ladies, hes available. On a more serious note, I would have to say CRHSs most eligible bachelor is Siyavash Askari. Siyavash likes long walks on the beach and snuggling while watching anything with Ryan Reynolds; just kidding. Siyavash is a senior and recently broke the overall total in weightlifting. He is a football player, former wrestler, and runs track; he is what one would call a stud. But what about all those single ladies out there? Dont worry guys; Ive got your hook up. There are tons of attractive and sweet girls at our school, too bad most of them are taken; but not all, and theres your silver lining. I bet youre sitting there reading this going, Who Justice? Please tell me! And dont worry, when it comes to information I always deliver the goods. Obviously Canyon Ridges most eligible is the gorgeous Heavenlee Walker. For those of you who dont know Heavenlee she is a junior and a varsity cheerleader, and also an honor student. Granted she can have her blonde moments, but dont we all? Overall, though Heavenlee is smart, funny, attractive, and one of the sweetest people you will ever meet; that is what makes her one of CHRSs most eligible bachelorettes. In all my two years of journalism no article has brought me more joy than one that makes me realize I very well could get two special individuals hooked up. So to those two special soon-to-be taken people I have a special message, YOu OWE ME BIG FOR THIS!

Canyon Ridge brings home B.P.A. wins

Kameron Yeggy Managing Editor
January 16, 2012 brought around a significant day for the Canyon Ridge chapter of Business Professionals of America. On this day high school students from Region 6 (CRHS, TFHS, Gooding, Filer, Buhl, and more) all gathered at CSI for the BPA regional competitions. The competitions were kicked off with a welcoming ceremony led by Mrs. Bean and yours truly. The days schedule and guidelines were discussed, and then members darted off and prepared to compete. Jose Santos, senior, competed in the Medical Office Procedures and Video Production Team events. It was a great experience that makes you work to be extraordinary, states Santos. Students gathered in the Student Union building and waited until it was their time to test or present. Students were allowed to select three events to compete in from a list of over 60 events, including accounting, video production, medical office procedures, and many more. Between 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., individuals and teams took part in their designated competitions, and then proceeded to the Fine Arts Building for the award ceremony.

Mitt Romney
Sara Buddecke Advertising Coordinator
Its that time of year again. Campaigning time. Many esteemed men and women from both parties are competing to become the next President of the United States. In the Republican GOP four men are still in the race. Newt Gingrich is in first, Mitt Romney in second, Ron Paul is in third, and Rick Santorum is in last place. Many people heard of all of this hubbub, but does one really know whats going on? Lets profile top dog Mitt Romney. Mitt Romney came from an uneducated household. Neither his mother nor father ever finished college. But he worked hard and soon became the governor of Michigan. His wife Ann was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1998 and fought a long battle with breast cancer. Mitt stayed by her side the whole time. Mitt is not a career politician. He has spent most of his life in the private sector, giving him intimate knowledge of how our economy works. But he has also been an outstanding public servant. In one chapter of his career, he reversed the decline of a state mired in recession. In another chapter, he salvaged the 2002 Winter Olympic Games from certain disaster. When Mitt was elected Governor of Massachusetts in 2002, the state was in bad shape. Its budget was out of balance, spending was soaring, and taxpayers were being required to pay more and more in taxes for diminishing services. The state economy was going down the drain, with businesses cutting back on investment or even closing and unemployment becoming more and more common. Mitt made hard decisions that brought state spending under control. He restructured and strengthened government programs, cutting back where necessary and finding satisfaction from the citizens of Michigan. Mitt Romney is a business man. He is CEO of Bain Capital. That bloomed into Staples, Bright Horizons, and Sports Authority. Soon he returned to his old job and Bain & Company, now the CEO. Mitt definitely knows how to turn a bad economy.

Weird and wacky news

Cody Cunningham News Editor
News comes in many forms, but the most fascinating to some is the weird category. These humorous stories come from everywhere in every shape and form. Here are just a few instances of these stories. The first story deals with Facebook addiction. Two teens in Atlanta, Georgia broke into a CNNs newsroom where they hiked to the fifth floor to find a computer. Why would they need a computer you ask? They needed to check Facebook pages. When authorities discovered the duo, the computer screen revealed the reasoning of the break in. The girls were charged with criminal trespassing and were each held on a $500 bail. Just how attached to social media are people these days? Apparently they are attached enough to get hauled off to jail for it. In a new story, President Obamas used 2005 Chrysler 300C is being auctioned off. The car is Kelley Blue Booked at around $14,346, but youd be crazy to think you could get this particular one for such a price. The auction started off with a whopping $1,000,000 minimum on eBay. A ridiculous price indeed, and even with the low miles, 19,000, it is still a total ripoff. But hey, someone will most likely go for it. A study conducted by U.K.s National Car Parks concluded that women drivers are better than their male counterparts. Over the 2,500 drivers studied in the month long observation, the women scored higher than men. The study consisted of various aspects of parking, including technique, accuracy, and time taken to park. There are sure to be many mixed emotions about the results of the observation, but a study is a study.

We have all watched television; therefore we have all seen commercials. There have been several commercials aired to promote the awareness of autism over the past few years. Many of us have heard of autism, but do we all know what it actually is? Autism is a disorder in brain development that occurs within the first few years of life. Those with autism experience difficulties in social interaction, communication, and behavior. Statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) determined approximately 1 in 110 American children are on the autism spectrum. This statistic is a staggering 600 percent increase over only the past two decades. To be on the autism spectrum generally means that everyone with autism is

unique. Some autistics may have great speech abilities, while others may still be developing their speech skills. Others with autism may be incredibly social, while the rest may be more comfortable with keeping to their self. The exact cause of autism is still unknown. Since there are so many variations to the disorder of autism, it makes it that much more difficult to find the direct cause. Recent studies have strongly favored that autism may be caused by mutation in the genes. Some people (mostly parents) have questioned vaccines their child has received. After studies were conducted, scientists have said that there is no connection between autism and the vaccines tested. Autism is nothing bad, or anything to be looked down upon. Many of those with autism have amazed people every day. Some of us may have heard of Jason McElwain, a teenager with autism who loved playing basketball. At his school, he was appointed manager of the basketball team. At one of the games, he was placed onto the court and proved to be incredibly phenomenal. The crowd went wild as they witnessed Jason score 20 points within the last few minutes of the game. Jason is a great example that even though one may have a disorder, it wont stop them from being great. Each person with autism has something truly special about them, and Jason McElwain had the opportunity to show the world whats special about him. Each person with autism develops differently; some skills develop quicker than others. Autism is increasing each year, so it is very important to be aware, and most importantly accept the disorder. What the hearts mean Presidential Race

Sarah Pak Staff Writer
A time for heart shaped candies, boxes of chocolates, and flowers for the sweethearts of loved ones. A time for those to show they care however, some beg to differ. For some, Valentines Day is not even looked at as a day of love and caring, its the reminder of a massacre. In a community in Chicago, there were two rival gangs. Al Capones name will never be forgotten, for he was the one in charge of making sure his rival, Bugs Moran, was dead. Capone set up a horrific plan involving a stolen police car and gang members from outside of the Chicago area. He had a hijacker set up a meeting to sell and exchange a certain kind of whiskey for a really good price, knowing Moran would agree. Six men died at Morans headquarters, the seventh died at the hospital. Even though Capone was after Moran, Moran was unknowingly saving his own life running a couple minutes late to the meeting that was set up for 10:30 AM, February 14, 1929. However, for the rest of us, Valentines Day isnt reflected on as something so hideous. February 14th, is the feast day for St. Valentine. In 496 AD, Pope Gelasis marked February 14th as the celebration of his martyrdom. He, Valentinus, is the patron saint of love, young people, and happy marriages. Valentinus was a priest in Rome during the time Claudius II was the Roman Emperor. It was a time of war and Claudius II didnt approve of marriages during this time. He had believed that single soldiers performed better than married soldiers. Valentinus believed otherwise. Going against the law, Valentinus became a bishop and began performing marriage ceremonies. Because of this, it leads him to his death. His death wasnt anything pleasant either; he was stoned and clubbed. And when he didnt die from that, Claudius had his soldiers behead Valentinus. Before Valentinus was killed, a friend whom he had performed a marriage ceremony came in to visit him. He slipped him a note saying, from your Valentine. This is assumed to have started the traditional valentines handed out to friends and family. Since St. Valentines death, couples whom he had married vowed to never let him be forgotten. With the sacrifice and courage Valentinus had in order to perform marriages, fully aware that a brutal beating and death was the punishment, he did so anyways. He wanted young couples and those in love to be happy, not live their lives in fear because of love. Just because Valentines Day is so commercialized, doesnt mean the single people out there have to feel completely lonely. Victoria Valdez, sophomore, says, To me Valentines Day reaches out to a certain group, couples. But what is the holiday intended to mean for us single people? To answer that question, they should know that St. Valentines work is never finished, and hes watching over them so they can have a happy life in love too.

On November 6, 2012 our 57th Presidential Election will take place. With Barack Obama going against four candidates: Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, and Rick Santorum. Gingrich is in first place so far to go head to head with Obama. As of Saturday, January 21, 2012, Gingrich had 242,417 votes with Romney in second with 167,419 votes. Mr. Steve Davis, History teacher for almost every grade level at Canyon Ridge High School, says, There is a real competition between Mitt Romney, former Government of Massachusetts, and Newt Gingrich, the former speaker of the house. From votes to speeches, each candidate is doing his best to take the winning toll against President Obama, but whos looking the best? Mr. Davis also said, I would prefer Mitt Romney from the Republican party because he has organization and money to run a national campaign. Romney is sure coming close with Gingrich in first, just 74,998

Dangers of fake guns Crime rate in Twin

Jared Berry Staff Writer
As a child, almost every young boy wants some type of gun. Whether it is a BB gun, squirt gun, dart gun, or any other type of gun, they just cant seem to put them down and they are always pretending to shoot things with them. As they get older, the young boys start to play video games where they shoot people. All of these activities, though they are just for pure enjoyment, can actually be quite harmful and affect young boys development as they grow older. They start to grow more comfortable around guns and it can lead to them acting irresponsibly when handling guns, whether they are real or fake. More and more lately, there have been reports of young adults and teens, most of which are boys, being shot and injured by police and defensive citizens for brandishing fake firearms. The problems occur most often when boys flaunt the ever more authentic looking toy weapons in the view of the public. This causes people to become very nervous. Just recently, there was a these that bring up many questions. Should authentic looking toy guns be made illegal, what should the appropriate age to own an air soft or pellet-gun be, and finally, are children becoming too comfortable with handling guns? Kendall Hall, 11, along with most of society, completely agrees that young children are becoming too comfortable with real as well as fake guns. But when asked if authentic looking toy guns, such as air soft and pellet guns need to have an age limit or restrictions on them, he said, no. The problem with kids becoming irresponsible with toy guns as well as real firearms is growing ever larger, but nobody is willing to do anything about it. One of these days, a serious enough incident is going take place that people are going to be forced to deal with this ever-mounting problem.

votes to go, he could possibly win. But the real issue is Obama vs. Romney. In a recent speech, Mitt Romney calls Obama, detached from reality, the people, and his own words. He had also said, the detachment between reality and what he says is extraordinary, I think its time to have somebody who says what he means and means what he says. (Shear, Article). Like in any other campaigns or competitions, there will always be one loser. After so many candidates have dropped out of the Presidential Race, it is becoming easier to see who it will be. With Ron Paul being in dead last with only 77, 943 votes, he may not get too far in this race, but theres always a chance for anybody to turn it around. Davis also added, I wouldnt want to see Paul win because he might fracture the votes, meaning take votes from the real two republicans competing, if he forms a third party. So there you have it, the updates on our Presidential Election. Keep watching the news for new information that is to come soon.

Living in a town on the smaller scale, many residents of Twin Falls wouldnt figure that there would be much of a crime rate in the town limits. Unfortunately, this assumption has been proven false as the rate of vandalism has risen. Usually adults and residents of any town expect some smaller acts of vandalism to occur. The usual toilet-papering a house is an age old pastime for many teenagers. But someone in Twin Falls has taken smaller scale vandalism to the extreme. Its hard to understand what the perpetrator was thinking when the windows of over 90 cars were smashed by what appears to be a baseball bat. Jim Carrey: As crazy as it gets

Funny man James Eugene Carrey, also known as Jim Carrey, is mostly recognized for his outrageously humorous movies. He is the crazy, Canadian comedian who many consider hilarious, while others might consider him a bit of a nuisance. Some might even say that at times his humor comes off as a bit dramatic and obnoxious. Although Jim Carrey may come off as a happy go lucky guy, it is true that he pretty much came from having nothing to becoming one of the most inspiring actors of all time. He was able to overcome a very harsh upbringing, and make a name for himself. Jim was nominated for a BAFTA, and has won two Golden Globe Awards. As for the few people who

may not know him, some of his most famous movies include: Dumb and Dumber, Bruce Almighty, The Mask, and many more. Freshman, Brody Ferreira says, Jim Carrey is awesome, he supports autism and he is also hilarious. Most of Jim Carreys movies are funny, but every now and then he surprises audiences by also starring in serious roles like, Number 23, Yes Man, Batman Forever, and The Truman Show. Senior, Chantry Woods, says, Jim Carrey is funny, but hes really annoying and irritating! The Canadian actor has been acting in movies since 1990. Without any doubt he will be around for much longer. His ability to play the sincere, inspiring role as well as the lovable laughmaster will surely secure him as one of the most promising actors of all time.

expand. Blue October is incredibly talented due to the amount of work they place in both their lyrics and instrumental sound. Justin Furstenfeld keeps his lyrics honest, and isnt afraid to say it just how it is. Justin has struggled with bipolar disorder and drug problems, which gives him a unique way of expressing himself throughout each word he sings. They make for a one of a kind band, and after hearing their music, one will soon find out how. Kenny Harper, a senior, says, Ive been listening to Blue October for 4-5 years, I like them because they have songs that speak to my soul. Into the Ocean is my favorite song of theirs. Any Man in America is an album that truly tells a story. Listening to the lyrics in this album, one soon learns that Justin has a daughter named Blue, and has to struggle through a custody battle for the little girl he says has changed

his life for the better. It is also told through the lyrics that Justin went through a terrible divorce, and that the ex-wife/mother wasnt leaving him until she broke his heart in more than one way. This album was a colossal leap from their past work, and shows how much they have improved as a band. Blue October is a great example of what true music is. After hearing a few songs, their fans can feel the passion for what they do steam off of the speakers. Blue October shows that playing music isnt anything about record deals or how much money they can make, but to express oneself and be happy with what one does. They continue to be unique with everything they produce, just when one thinks they cant get any better, they do. The bands focus is to simply play in front of the world and show their astonishing talent, impressing millions around the world.

Canyon Ridges rock

From its very first year, Canyon Ridge High Schools rock has been the target for taggers. The Rock has been a mesh of colors from the very beginning. Anytime a school pays its visit, the poor rock is painted an ugly blue or a bright orange. It is a way of marking territory. Then Canyon Ridge would have to go out and paint it back to the beautiful color, crimson. This tagging has always constituted a rivalry. The rock has been used to pump students up before a big game, or earn a bit of payback after a loss. Either way, the rock has always been a way of speaking a schools mind, but the rocks voice has died a little lately. Now the rock has become a way for students to write birthday wishes to their friends, or to make announcements. This is a far cry from the competitively intimidating threats that once marked the rock. Nowadays, the rock is a decorative ensemble that is

Ever been in a class with nothing to do? Well why not kill some time with some computer games. These are just a few of the best games on www.kongregate.com Starting things off is the third best game by Stick Figure Badminton. Go ahead and grab a friend for this one. This game is just pure adrenaline. There can be some pretty intense games between one and his/her competitor. Its best to learn the tricks of the trades and show the challenger whose boss. Coming up in the number two spot is Kingdom Rush. Kingdom Rush is a tower defense game but it takes place in the medieval age. One builds towers of archers, magicians, or barracks equipped with troops all while fighting goblins, orcs, trolls, and many other enemies trying to keep them out of the city. They also provide little side missions to keep the game more interesting and to provide a little more of a challenge. The last and best game is Learn to Fly 2. This game is all about a penguin using gliders, propellers, and sleds to try and fly off to the main land. One starts off in the game with nothing and earns cash to buy new items after every run. It is very entertaining to buy sweet new machines and to see how far one can get. Learn to Fly 2 can be very time consuming with its many achievements that one can unlock, and that is why it lands in the number one spot. These are the best games of Kongregate and are guaranteed to not only kill time but to give players some pleasure in the world of gaming as well. Get out there and play those computer games.

the front of CRHS. Even with the occasional birthday wishes, the rock shows little change. The most action this stone receives as of now is a little snow or rain. What happened to the consistent tagging that never once let up? Is tagging a thing of the past? This being said, the rock is crying out for attention. Canyon Ridge will lose the threat of the game if the first thing another school sees is a, Happy Birthday! This just is not menacing enough. That means it is time to take those school-colored spray paints and get going! This rock is in dire need of a makeover.

Blakes band of the month

Blake Maughan Staff Writer
This months band is Duran Duran, who originated in Birmingham, England in the year 1978. They have been recipients of The Brit Awards twice, The Grammy Awards, the Q Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, and the Ivor Novello Awards. The band also has nominees for the American Music awards, the Golden Globe Awards, the MTV Video Music Awards (one of which they actually won), and have won 9 out of 14 of their nominations. They have also been inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Duran Duran plays mostly Pop rock, New Romantic, Synthpop, and Alternative rock. They are considered to have been one of the 80s most successful bands and were big influences in the Second British Invasion music era. Current members include Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, and Roger Taylor. Past members have included Andy Taylor, Sterling Campbell, Warren Cuccurullo, Stephen Duffy, Alan Curtis, Andy Wickett, Simon Colley, and Jeff Thomas. An interesting fact about Duran Duran is that 5 members have had the last name Taylor and none of them have been closely related. Some of their greatest hits of all time are My Own Way, Hungry like the Wolf, Save a Prayer, and Rio. Save a Prayer made number 2 in 1981 in the UK, and their first three albums went multi-platinum. They have many more songs well worth listening to, so they get this months slot in Band of the Month. Although theyve been around for quite some time, they arent going anywhere anytime soon.

Benefits of Reading
Alexis Bowler Features Editor
One may think reading is boring and pointless, but behind the turning of all of those pages comes the development of many benefits and ideas. Sadly, it seems that lately there has been a lack of desire or motivation to read a book, let alone even look at the cover of it. With reading, one can actually become smarter; reading is an active mental process. While reading, one gets to enter a new world filled with new experiences and new characters. Jordan Shindle, 12th, states, Reading is pretty awesome, it takes you to different places, and different times, and you get to see a characters life in your eyes. If students spent as much time reading as they do sitting on the couch and watching TV, society would all have the chance to become even more literate and gain more knowledge, creativity, and a deeper understanding of other cultures. As most would say, the books are much better than the movies; books have more detail and meaning behind them. Reading is also stress free, so when one has had a rough day at school, going home and opening a book can be soothing and provide a chance to unwind. According to Persistencelearning.com, reading improves ones focus and concentration. Senior, Sameer Zamel says, Reading is boring, because I have better things to do, and its just no fun. While reading a book, one is focusing on the book for long periods of time; one must also have the ability to concentrate and follow along with the book. So to some, reading may be boring and time consuming, but gaining knowledge and memory seems to be worth the time.

Animal testing, unfair and cruel to animals

Sarah Pak Staff Writer
We all know it exists, yet we all pretend it doesnt. Everyone sees and hears the heartbreakingly, beautiful, crystal clear, music of Sarah McLachlan on the ASPCA commercials, but once again, it passes as if no one heard anything. Animal testing and animal cruelty are one of the biggest problems in society. The question is, when will someone stand up to do something about it? People assume that just because animals dont talk and speak and think exactly like humans do that it is okay to abuse, neglect, and test on them. Millions of animals die every year from testing. Millions are killed every year for food, so would dying from medical research be more worthy of a death? Who are we to say who lives and who doesnt? The government doesnt even consider rats and mice real animals therefore experimenters dont have to keep a record of how many rodents are contributing to the number of animal deaths. Yes, human life does seem to have a greater value than the life of an animal, but, that gives no right to treat them like filthy scum. Now, lets think about how testing on animals can be misleading. If one thinks about it, these animals are locked in cages day in and day out. Their stress levels are immense, and they know danger is right around the corner. So, the response an animal has to a certain experiment may be the complete opposite to that of a humans reaction. Testing ranges from cosmetics to cleaning products and medical research. Emmanuel Nunez, senior, says, It would make more sense to test animals for medical research rather than cosmetics. I could honestly care less about the cosmetics and cleaning products, Id rather know about the medical aspect. There are other ways to get these experiments tested! There have been studies on testing on human tissue cultures, test tube experiments, and computer models. Delia Plascencia, sophomore, says, Its sad, but thanks to testing on animals, we live. Now does this mean a line can or should be drawn for what scientists can or cannot test on animals? Certainly. If testing must be done on animals, it should be of extreme importance. Testing cosmetics and cleaning products on animals is just plain wrong. How does that benefit the human race in the slightest bit? Yes, it tells us if a cleaning chemical is harmful or not, but come on. Use common sense to determine your safety in cleaning and applying make-up and other cosmetics. Not the lives of innocent animals. If one is really truly concerned about the

Attendance finals Valentines are overrated

Courtney Bertoni Staff Writer
For most, the ending of a semester is a time to burn old assignments and throw away anything that had to do with past painstaking brain function. However, for the unlucky few, its a time to buckle down and study for that begrudging attendance final. If one has had more than three absences in any class, he or she knows how painful these pesky tests can be. Considering the amount of EOCs one has to suffer through, the extra amount of studying leaves students not only mentally exhausted, but slightly brain-dead. The final is based purely off of attendance. In some circumstances, this is fair. Some students find it irrelevant to show up to class on time or at all. Considering how hard it is to retain information for less than fifty measly minutes, this is inexcusable. However, sometimes students who are highly dedicated to their high school education, fall into the midst of a health emergency. For this reason, it is imperative to miss a few school days; which can sometimes leave a student with more than three absences. Either a student misses school and takes the dreaded final or comes to school deathly ill and then proceed to spread their germs every which way. The attendance rule is encouraging students to come to school with the deadly flu and whatever else. Therefore, finals should be based off of the grade in the class. After all the hard work, should a student really be punished for being sick? Granted, it is possible that a student can make an entire semester without one absence, but only for the lucky illness-immune. For such a health endangering rule, one could only hope it would bend a little.

The Pak family dog looks longingly into the camera lens as the picture is snapped. This family could never imagine the horrendous testing done.

February 14th is a day to celebrate the love by exchanging gifts and sweets. As the chocolates and big stuffed bears are being bought and gifted to that special someone, another sits and wonders if Valentines Day is just too overrated?! Hanna Kern, 10 says I think Valentines Day is super cute! Cute stuffed white bears with little hearts that say I love you in some cute way is pretty twinkle eyed! Hanna also said, even if youre not in a relationship, there is always someone you can spend it with. So you may not have to have a lover to get a box of chocolates, just a best friend or a crush. Hanna also added, my favorite part about it is that its a day where everybody can appreciate the ones they love. Flowers, candy, and

gifts are being exchanged to see some lucky person smile from cheek to cheek, but why is it that in modern day we celebrate is on just the 14th when really it was meant to be the whole month of February? Long ago during the Romanticism time, a priest

named Valentine had started this tradition. When sitting in prison, he sent a love card, a valentine, to his crush, which he had signed, Your Valentine. Historians believe that the reason for February 14th being the day to celebrate was either

the death or burial of Saint Valentine. Approximately 141 million Valentines Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentines Day the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas. (From a Did You Know off the History Channel.) Valentines Day is a cute celebration, but if someone can show their love to another way, then why cant they do so any other day? Valentines Day may be that one day to make someone smile and be happy, but it should be like this every day and not just one day. Blaze Requa, 11 says, Id say it is too overrated because everybody makes a huge deal about it like its more important than anniversaries and such. So to anybody who is a Valentines Day person, dont let this article get your hopes down, let it boost them up and keep celebrating the way you do.

Maturity in high school

Courtney Bertoni Staff Writer
High School is a time for new experiences, new friends, and a time for a little growing up. Does this sound like a normal teenage high school career? Many would beg to differ. Students rarely take advantage of this time to prepare for the difficulties life presents. For most, high school is a playground, but in all actuality, high school acts as a crash course on life. After four measly years, unsuspecting teens will have the responsibilities of an adult thrust into their hands. That means paying for bills, going to school, and working that endearing low-wage job. Having a grand social life will not in any way prepare students for the tasks at hand. Students must learn the value of school and take the time to appreciate it. When it seems as if parents are constantly nagging, bosses demanding, and a load of homework is lingering over ones head, its only preparing a person for the challenges in their near future. Students need to learn that high school is about buckling down and taking on the responsibility for their future. So all of this begs the question; do students take advantage of this time? Most would argue, no; hence the amount of burger-flippers in society.

Perfect date 2/14/12

Alexis Bowler Features Editor
Every girl wants the perfect date that she has always envisioned since she was a little girl in elementary school. This is especially true on that singular day that comes in February every year, yes, Valentines Day; the day that is filled with love, chocolates, stuffed animals, flowers, and cards. Of course, every girl in the world has a different perspective on what she expect her boyfriends to give her or where to take her out; but it pretty much boils down to one thing, and that is attention. According to a senior at Canyon Ridge High School, Sierra Cooper just loves spending a lovely evening with her man and that is enough for her on Valentines Day. She states, I think dinner would be great and watching the sunrise on the beach. Although the state of Idaho sadly doesnt have a beach or many things that resemble a beach, its nice that a girl can still dream. Yes, the thought of flowers and chocolates still warm in a girls heart, but mostly what they hope for is a night with the one they love that revolves around a lot of PDA and sweet words spoken. Senior, Levi Molt expresses his love for Valentines Day. I would have a handmade card and a single rose delivered to

her at school. Then I would pick her up after school with another rose and take her to the South Hills to watch the sunset, then dinner and a movie. Its easy to say that not everyone loves the holiday, many feel as if its single awareness day. To an extent this is true; just keep in mind that maybe next year one will be able to spend the perfect day with a loved one. Perhaps there is no perfect date that exists; however, it may be perfect to that one person. Rather it is single awareness day or not, keep in mind that the hope is still alive and the holiday isnt just going to vanish. Happy Valentines Day everyone!

Sewer Team Adventures: The stolen Chinese nuts

Michael Chapple Humor Editor
The last defeat was a sweet victory for the team, especially for Fat Albert who went home with a fully cooked Porky Pig. Many thought he joined Michelangelo in the Bahamas, but not long after this accusation he was spotted back in the danger zone releasing the remains of Porky Pig back into the sewer. He then rejoined the team in hope of helping out in another case. His dream came true a week later when the team got a call. Unknown Caller: Somebody stole my Chinese nuts! Leonardo: Sir, please calm down and tell us what happened. Unknown: I was sound asleep when someone snuck in and ripped the nuts right out of my container. Leonardo: Alright, the team will handle this case with care. Leonardo headed back to the meeting room to inform the rest of the team of their new task. Leonardo: Alright guys we have a sweaty case on our hands. Somebody has stolen the Chinese nuts. Bill: Oh my gosh! Albert: Hey hey hey, who would want those anyway? Leonardo: Well Albert, that is what we have to figure out. So lets quit wasting time and get to work. The team was hard at work all night trying to think of all the possible suspects. They were just about to give up on this case when an unexpected visitor came through the door. Leonardo: Who is there? Bill: Oh my gosh! Leonardo: What is it Bill? Bill: Oh my gosh! Leonardo: Bill quit being dumb and say something. Michelangelo: Now Leo, that is no way to talk to the team members. L e o n a r d o : Michelangelo! What are you doing back? Michelangelo: Well I was on the beach tanning my cheeks when I fell asleep and had a dream that someone stole the Chinese nuts. Leonardo: Did the dream give you any clues who stole them? Michelangelo: No I dont think so. All I saw was Senor Chang dancing around with the nuts. L e o n a r d o : Michelangelo, you idiot! That is our thief. Michelangelo: Well that makes sense now. Fat Albert: Those are some tan cheeks! Michelangelo: Thanks Fatty! Leonardo: Alright, lets go get him guys. The team packed up and headed to the rich part of the sewers to the mansion of Senor Chang. The team charged through the door and approached Senor Chang. Leonardo: Chang! Give us the nuts back. Chang: Whoa! You scared me gayboys. Leonardo: The nuts Chang! Chang: Wow! Those are some tan cheeks you got there. Michelangelo: Thanks, took about a year of daily tanning. Leonardo: Stay on task Michelangelo! Chang, quit messing around and give us the nuts. Chang: Never! Leonardo: Why do you want the nuts in the first place? Chang: I like nuts ok and the Chinese nuts are the biggest around! Michelangelo: You would like nuts Chang! Fat Albert: I will give you some nuts! Leonardo: Get him Albert! Fat Albert wrestled Chang to the ground and took the Chinese nuts back. Michelangelo: Whoooooooo! Fatty got some skill! Bill: Oh my gosh! Leonardo: Nice job Albert you saved the day. The team took Senor Chang and locked him up. Fat Albert, on the other hand, kept his promise and gave Chang some nuts everyday. The team was satisfied with this victory, but they cant wait for more.

Valentines Day is here, and hopefully everyone stayed away from the cute but very annoying boxes of chocolates. Not only do the chocolates taste dreadful, but the gift itself is so predictable. Yes, in some way its sentimental, and allows one to show that they care about his or her boyfriend/girlfriend, but it really doesnt help ones case if the person ends up throwing the majority of the chocolates away. box of chocolates and them having to nibble on every single piece of chocolate to find out which ones are utterly repulsive and which ones are actually decent. Not only do they look like picky eaters, but its one step closer to making them look like the rabbits that they already resemble. If only the box actually came with a little description of what each flavor of chocolates was. That would be too convenient for the customers though, so naturally, the companies wont ever make one. It would save A LOT of time for everyone, while also helping to keep ones wallet a little fuller. The box of chocolates

is a horrible gift, when one really thinks about it. No one keeps the box after all the chocolates are all gone, and the chocolates are usually gone within the first five minutes after receiving the chocolates. The box of chocolates is a horrible gift for Valentines Day, not only does it make one broke, but a lot of throwing up occurs on account of all the horrendous chocolates that are put in these boxes. If one wants to buy chocolate for their boyfriend/girlfriend save some money and time by just getting them their favorite candy bar. Theyll appreciate it a lot more.

Stupid Cupid
Jared Berry Staff Writer
As Valentines Day rapidly approaches, so does the pesky baby that wears a diaper, carelessly shoots arrows, and makes people go crazily in love. It is in this perilous time that one must always be on the lookout for cupid and try to avoid his arrows at all costs; unless that is, you want to be hopelessly in love with the very next person that you set your eyes on. But there is hope! Here are some surefire ways to know if cupid is stalking you and how to escape his curse. If you ever happen to be walking nonchalantly down the hall-way and catch a brief whiff of Baby Powder or see an abandoned Diaper in lying on the ground, beware, Cupid is near, and probably naked. Scurry out of the hallway as fast as your little legs can carry you, because you are being stalked by Cupid, who is just waiting to get you with an arrow. If any other time you feel uncomfortable, or like youre being watched, which you probably are, carry a shield (made from only the finest of dragon scales) with you to block any arrows that come flying your way. Whenever you hear a beautiful harp playing, or the sound of cheerful babys laughter that invites you to come check it out, dont do it. It is a masterfully crafted trap that is just waiting to be sprung. If you just cant resist checking it out, don the nearest suit of Golden armor and make it quick. Be warned, the sight of a naked baby flying around with wings and a harp can leave you scarred for life. Finally, the most obvious sign that Cupid is in the vicinity, is when you see people randomly making out all over the hallway. Be careful, your love life might be in jeopardy! The only thing one can do to escape this certain peril is to make a futile attempt at being madly in love with your closest neighbor. This gives you at least a tiny chance at escaping Cupids fiery darts of infatuation. Be warned though, making out with your nearest neighbor may not be the most pleasant experience!

Dear A&B: Valentines Day is here, and I have a hot date lined up for tonight. The only problem is I become extremely sweaty at the slightest glance from her beautiful eyes. Please help me, I want this night to be one to remember. Dear sweaty: How did you even get a date in the first place? Well back to your question, go to the nearest convenience store, and load up on the deodorant products and tissue paper. Next find two more people and head to your house. While one wipes you down with the deodorant, the other will stick the tissue paper to you. These friends will get to know you very well! Lets see the sweat try to penetrate that! Dear A&B: I really want to spend Valentines Day with someone special, but I dont know how to ask her out. Please help me. Dear Desperate: This has to be all or nothing. Pick out your chick, walk up to her and give her your best pickup line while flexing your muscles. If this doesnt work, good luck getting the date. As a last resort, break down crying, and maybe you will earn a pity date. Dear A&B: My girlfriend stole my car keys, and now my car is missing. Is there any way that through the power of love I can get my car and keys back? Dear Keyless: Ask her out on a date. When she sets the keys on the table, take them and run. The relationship might be over, but your car will soon be safely back in your garage. So rev up your engine, and get ready for the wildest date of your life. Dear A&B: Every Valentines Day I receive those nasty conversation hearts from my girlfriend. They are really starting to pile up in my room, and I dont know what to do with them. Help! Dear Heart Attack: There are a several solutions to your problem. You can always mail them back to your girlfriend under an anonymous code name. Or you can start feeding them to all of the neighborhood dogs. Whatever you do, dont eat them yourself. They taste like chalk and give you the very real possibility of having a heart attack. Dear A&B: On Valentines Day I have to meet my dates father, and the rumor is going around that he likes to pull out his guns. I am seriously starting to wonder if this date was such a good idea. Dear Worried: This date was definitely a good idea. First, there are some questions that need to be answered. Like what type of guns does he like to pull out, and second are these guns loaded? If worse comes to worse and he pulls out the wrong type of firearms, then load up your own guns and prepare to deliver a direct punch to his face. The good news is that your date is going to be short and sweet!

Its Valentines Day, and how one spends it depends on ones relationship status. For one who is taken, the day is strongly looked forward to. If one is single, this is yet another miserable day that they will spend alone. Sabryna Schmidt recalls her Valentines Day last year, a day she spent being single. She kindly gives the inside story The day begins as Sabryna Schmidt jolts out of her bed, cold, and freezing. She looks out the window seeing that the morning is dark and glooming. This soon causes her to realize that she has been drenched in rain from leaving the window open overnight. After huddling over the heater to once again regain a normal body temperature, her stomach growls; speaking that it wants to be fed cereal. Skipping to the kitchen, she pours herself a

delicious bowl of Special K cereal, and then turns to the fridge. Exploring the fridge, she soon finds out that the milk has run out, and there is literally nothing else in the fridge. So in the absence of milk, she used her tears. Then attending school, the halls are soon littered with merry couples. They exchange gifts, and take the time to point and laugh as single Sabryna ventures the halls alone. After such a long day of school, she returns to her car and becomes astonished. Someone had keyed You are forever alone onto the side of her car. Turning on her car, she soon finds out that her tires have also slashed. She dials up her father and he says that he is on his way. For some odd reason, he forgot his way to the school, and Sabrynas rescue was delayed over an hour. Finally returning home, she hears her ringtone Fireball and answers her cell phone. She

is then told that her work is flooded and she needs to come in. She works at McDonalds. Once at work, the customers try not to stare as her tears fall onto the burgers being flipped. Returning home, Sabryna decides to log onto Facebook. The homepage is swamped with I love yous and statuses aimed at what she doesnt have. She then gains enough self confidence to take herself out to dinner. Sabryna drives around Twin Falls and is reluctant to see that Applebees isnt that busy. Entering the restaurant, she is happily greeted by the waitress. The waitress smiles and says, Table fortwo? Im guessing your significant other is using the restroom? Taking advantage of the situation, she responds with yes, and then is seated. Happy couples surrounding her, she ends her Valentines Day alone; crying in Applebees.

Weird Idaho Laws

Blake Maughan Staff Writer
Most of the laws around the country are there for a good reason, but sometimes there are really pointless ones. These real laws in Idaho make little sense; they must be for keeping people like Kameron Yeggy under control. Do these things happen enough that we have to make laws about them? Idaho lawmakers seem to think so. Did you know that in Idaho, it is illegal to give someone a box of chocolates weighing more than 50 pounds? Its also illegal to fish on a camels back. Riding a merry-go-round on Sunday is also considered a crime. I dont know what to say to that one. These next laws are individual to certain cities, such as in Boise; residents cannot fish from a giraffes back. In Coeur d Alene, if a police officer approaches a car and thinks that the occupants are makin love, he is required to either honk or flash his lights and wait three minutes before he can approach the car again. In Eagle, you cant sweep dirt from your house into the street, bicycles are not allowed in tennis courts, and people cant camp out on the city sidewalks. In Pocatello, a law from 1912 said that, The carrying of concealed weapons is forbidden, unless some are exhibited in public view. These laws are out there, and a lot of people wouldnt have a clue on how to break some of them, but you know that some person with nothing better to do is going to get in the news for breaking these. As long as you dont own any camel saddles, you should be fine.

Aloha, Kevin Brown Health & Wellness: avoiding that pain in the neck
One cant escape the constant buzz of a cell phone or mobile device. Everywhere tweens, teens, and young adults are text messaging, instant messaging, or looking down focusing on what is going on in the cyber world of their hand-held mobile device. Christian Williams, junior, says, I think Im texting pretty much all the time. Believe it or not, textneck is becoming a global epidemic. A study at the University of Queensland in Australia has found that text messaging is the most addictive digital service on mobile or internet, and is equivalent in addictiveness to cigarette smoking. What does this mean for most of the worlds teen and young adult population? Back pains, neck pains, headaches, and discomfort. Yes, texting and mobile devices such as mini laptops are causing such problems in the younger generations. Text-neck is a problem for those digital service users that causes one to tilt the head forward which then adds strain on the spine; most of it being on the neck. This is called FHP, which means forward head posture. For every inch of forward head posture, it can increase the weight of the head on the spine by an additional 10 pounds, according to doctor Kapandji of Physiology of Joints. An exact definition of text-neck is: An overuse syndrome involving the head, neck and shoulders, usually resulting from excessive strain on the spine from looking in a forward and downward position at any hand held mobile device, i.e., mobile phone, video game unit, computer, mp3 player, e-reader. This can cause headaches, neck pain, shoulder and arm pain, breathing compromise, and much more. A simple solution to this problem is holding the mobile device up to eye level keeping head up instead of looking down. If one is at home textmessaging they can lie down and hold the phone above their face. Another way to counter the FHP is to lie on the edge of your bed or stairs with ones head hanging off the edge so they get that natural curve back.

With every attraction to another human being brings out one of two emotions; lust or love. Lust, just one of the seven deadly sins, yet a very potent sin, shows up day to day in everyones lives. Love, a commitment towards another, is putting someone elses happiness above ones own self. Which of these two do teens really feel? With being a teenager, the more common of the two is lust. Although we may feel that we love another person, it is in actuality lust that we are feeling towards them. Theres a certain appeal that draws one towards that person, and one just cant decipher why. According to Kennedy Perkins, Senior, Lust is only concerned with the here and now, while love looks towards the future and the possibilities ahead. Many teens believe that they feel love towards another person, but its just not quite there yet. Although many teens wont want to hear this, its time that allows us to love another person. Being in a relationship for one week and enjoying ones boyfriends/girlfriends company does not mean that one loves them. It just

Kevin decided to attend for various reasons, saying, I got a scholarship here, my father and a sister of mine went here, and I love Hawaii! BYU-Hawaii is the most diverse university in the nation; I love meeting tons of cool international people on campus. During his years at CRHS, Kevin enjoyed every minute of it. He was a very busy senior; Kevin was on the tennis and bowling team, Senior Class President, Vice President of BPA, organized Elevated Ski Club,

and was part of choir, Quiz Bowl, and the 2nd annual Mr. CRHS pageant. Kevin had nothing but great things to say about CRHS. When asked his favorite moment, Kevin explains, I have so many memories there, but the most memorable one was when my class organized the Luna Protest where half the school walked out to support our teachers. I will also always remember Pennies for Possibilities when our schools fundraising went into effect and we were able to make Christmas happen for struggling families. That was really cool! Kevin then concluded with some advice for the current students at CRHS. Enjoy every minute you have in high school! Even when times are tough, stay positive. Get involved with school activities and do as much as you can! And remember that you can go anywhere in life if you just work hard for it. Also, enjoy high school classes because college is tough! Kevin Brown is a great example of what many things one can do in high school. He was very involved with Canyon Ridge High School, and has now moved on to greater things. Kevin currently works at BYUHawaii with the Facilities Management Office; he has the weekends off, and so he explores beautiful Hawaii.

Lust is most commonly mistaken for love in teen realtionships

means that one was able to find someone whose time they enjoy. While maybe just a week later, the thought of being with them a second longer seems utterly repulsive. Lust is most commonly mistaken for love in teen relationships; we are an age group that may be too young to quite understand exactly what love means. It takes maturity and understanding to finally find love with another human being. Yes, some teens do in actuality find love in some relationships, but statistics show that the majority feel

nothing more than lust. Love knows no boundaries; one is willing to sacrifice anything for the person that they love. Lust cares only for oneself, being almost selfish in a sense towards the other person. In present day many people base a lot of things on movies and television shows that one watches. Not fully realizing that the majority of the show is in fact depicting lust and not love. It shows the viewers what they believe the audience wishes to see, and in todays society thats lust. No longer is love the main characteristic that shows up, because people would much rather see a couple making out, then watching just how much they love one another. Lust or love, many will debate on what they feel towards their significant other when analyzing ones relationship. Is there literally nothing that one is willing to sacrifice to be with the person they love? If the answer is yes, one most likely feels nothing more than lust.

Many restaurants have food contests. These contests involve eating large amounts of food in a certain amount of time; a big lure to those who love food and a good challenge. Many have tried, few have succeeded. For those who have succeeded, these challenges are an easy way to get a little glory and a lot of indigestion. In Twin Falls, there are some restaurants that feature challenges. Buffalo Wild Wings offers a challenge known as the Buffalo Wild Wings Blazin Challenge, in which you must eat 12 Spicy Hot Wings in only 6 minutes; no drinks are allowed and one cant wipe their mouth. While one has to pay $8.99, regardless if they beat this challenge, they will receive a free t-shirt and a spot on the wall of fame. Another challenge in our area is the Train Wreck breakfast challenge at the Depot Grill. In this challenge, one must finish six Pancakes, a full pound of sausage, and four eggs in 30 minutes or less. If one beats the challenge, he get a free t-shirt and the breakfast costs nothing, compared to $25 if he doesnt beat it. If he beats the record he get free breakfast until either he dies, or someone else beats he record, whichever comes first. This does not even come close to covering the food challenges out there, both locally and nationally. So if one loves food and has some spare cash go out and find a challenge. You too can be a dude vs. food at many different respective restaurants in Twin Falls or surrounding areas.

When Riley was first born, she was born as a boy, always feeling uncomfortable in her own skin and was never able to be a little girl as she wanted. People all over the world make New Years resolutions to better their lives or to just change something about themselves, but do they go the extra mile to go through with what they say they will do? A good way to make sure one actually goes through with their

However, he is expected not to lose for the rest of the season. In the future, Braydon plans to wrestle at Briar Cliff University for two years and then hopes to be picked up by a larger school. He aspires to become a wrestling coach for his very own team someday, and there is no doubt that he will accomplish every one of his dreams. He has a total of 1350 pounds with 355 lbs. for his bench, 310 lbs. for incline, 425 lbs. for squat, and 260 lbs. for his power clean. Siyavash prepares himself for maxes by working out on a regular basis. After the work out, he tries to get as much protein as possible with eating food like, boiled eggs, chicken, and beef jerky. Weight lifting is a physically demanding activity and many take great pride with how much weight they can lift. With some insight from these two experienced lifters, getting there might be a little easier.

Bowl Games review

Jared Berry Staff Writer
This College Bowl Season has been a disappointing one for many people, and its not because there werent any exciting games. There were plenty of exciting, highscoring games, but it was the terrible matchups and rematch ups that bothered people the most. The BCS this year has especially failed to produce the season of excitement that it has in the past. Many people feel that the current BCS system needs to be replaced by a play-off system as early as next year. But regardless of the disappointment in the system, some great teams have come together to play some excellent games. First up, The Granddaddy of Them All! This years Rose Bowl game was one of the greatest in its long and extraordinary history. It was a matchup of the returning Wisconsin Badgers and the highpowered offensive Oregon Ducks. From the start of the game it looked like Wisconsin was in control. But every time the Badgers marched down the field to score with ease, the Ducks somehow found a way to answer. Everything turned around in the fourth quarter as Oregon scored a touchdown to take the lead. From there on out it was all Oregon who finished up the game and sealed the win with a field goal. Final score: 45-38 Oregon. The Tostitos Fiesta Bowl was another great game between two teams who really deserved to be there; Oklahoma state and Stanford. Just like Wisconsin did in the Rose Bowl, Stanford jumped out to an early 14 point lead and was in control for most of the first half. Then with 27 seconds left, Oklahoma State tied the score at 21 going into halftime. In the second half it was a back and forth battle until at the end of regulation Oklahoma State once again tied it. Oklahoma State then went on to win the Fiesta Bowl in overtime on a field goal. Final Score: 41-38 OT Oklahoma State. The Sugar Bowl shaped up to be another classic. It Was 13th ranked Michigan against 11th ranked Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech was down 10-6 at half time. But sure enough, they found a way to get back into the game and at the end of regulation it was tied at twenty. In overtime it looked like Virginia Techs wide receiver made a crazy catch to score a touchdown. After it was reviewed, it was determined that the catch was no good. Michigan went on to kick a field goal and win in overtime. Final Score: 23-20 OT Michigan. The Orange Bowl was one of the few upsetting bowl games of the season. One unworthy team, Clemson, met West Virginia on the field and there was absolutely no contest on who was better. The score turned out to look like a lopsided basketball score. There were some awesome plays that deserve another look though. Final Score: 7033 West Virginia. Next up, the Cotton Bowl, which featured Arkansas and Kansas State! This Bowl played out like an average game between two decent teams. Kansas State wasnt allowed to get onto the scoreboard until four minutes were left in the first half. But as most bowl games go, Kansas State made the comeback in the second half and was able to make it somewhat of a good game. In the end, the Arkansas Razorbacks out battled the Wildcats for the win. Final Score: 29-16 Arkansas. Finally, The Allstate BCS National Championship. This was probably the worst title match-up that the BCS has ever created. It was an exact rematch of a regular season game, and many people were furious with it. At first it looked like it was going to be another low scoring, boring game where only field goals were scored. In the last quarter Alabama finally ran the ball in for a touchdown. This game was clearly no contest. Alabama came out on top. Final Score: 21-0 Alabama.

Whats happening in the NBA

NBA is back fresh from a lockout and players are looking to pick up right where they left off. Some teams have been pulling away from the pack but most teams have been sitting around the 50/50 mark with their records. Not being able to practice early on has been showing that those teams with the most talent are winning. However, as the season wears on, teams should

Chase Petty Asst. Managing Editor/ Sports

start getting the hang of what they want to do and play better ball altogether. The Oklahoma City Thunder in the west and the Chicago Bulls in the east have been picking up where they left off last year with the top records in their conferences. The Boston Celtics looks like that age is catching up with them with a 10-10 record and it is tough to tell in the Western Conference with so many teams being competitive and records being average throughout. However, with the loss of Chris Paul, the New Orleans Hornets have

plummeted to last place with only 4 wins. Kobe Bryant has been proving why they call him the Black Mamba as of late with prolific scoring performances as he tries to keep the Lakers winning. Also, be on the lookout for the Minnesota Timberwolves to make a run. Although they only have a 10-11 record, they have been playing great basketball behind the beast Kevin Love and the newbie Ricky Rubio whose arrival has made the team be more in sync than ever before.

Annual faculty game results in CRHS loss

their lead over Canyon Ridge. Even with Twins lead getting bigger, the Canyon Ridge staff didnt let it affect them, making sure to still give it their all. Never letting up on Twin, and making sure they knew that they meant business. Half time rolled around, and the Canyon Ridge faculty cheerleaders got to show off their skills to the students. Dancing/cheering to songs like, Teach Me How to Dougie and Im Sexy and I know it. The students really loved it, and the faculty did a really good job of showing off their school spirit. Third quarter brought with it a horrible tragedy, while trying to rebound the ball, unfortunately Coach Alsturlund was injured, and was forced to sit out the rest of the game. It was utterly silent as all the students and staff hoped that he would be able to get up and shake it off. Regrettably that wasnt the case; Coach Alsturlund will hopefully make a full recovery, and be able to get back to being 100 percent. Fourth quarter flew by and the students watched in horror as the Twin staffed scored two five-pointers. The Canyon Ridge staff answered back with a couple of two and threepointers. Unfortunately when the final buzzer rang out Twin had triumphed over Canyon Ridge, ensuring that the traveling trophy would stay one more year with the Bruins. The Canyon Ridge staff did a remarkable job this year, and the student body is proud to call them Riverhawks. Hopefully next year, Canyon Ridge will be able to bring back the trophy to the high school it really belongs to.

It was that time of year again. Time for the Canyon Ridge faculty to face off against their town rivals, the Twin Falls faculty. This was the third annual game, and the stakes were high. The schools had a record of 1-1 against each other, making this game the ultimate tie breaker. Hopes were high, and both schools were doing everything that they could to help make their offense and defense better than ever before. The faculty did an amazing job, and no one can be disappointed with how the faculty played. The line-up for Canyon Ridge consisted of Coach Fox, Coach Hudleson, Coach Alsturlund, Trudy Weaver, Mrs. Jordan, Mrs. Holloway, Kasey Teske, Mr. Losser, Mr. Prigmore, Brooke Rey, Mr. Pierce, Mr. Tackett, Mr. Ridgeway, Mrs. Wray, Tia Killoy, and Mr. Brown. The faculty started out strong as the game first started up. Neck and neck with Twin, throughout the entire first quarter, it looked like once again Canyon Ridge was going to bring back the coveted trophy to Canyon Ridge. However when the second quarter began, Twin Falls suddenly got all this momentum, and increased
