HRC Fuses
Description, technical data and dimensions General
The users request for a maximum of reliability of service in low voltage networks, coupled with their effective and economic utilization, asks for considerable quality requirements of the protective gear in these networks. The continuous improvement of line protective gear, especially the constant development and quality increase of ABB Low Voltage High Rupturing Capacity Fuses led to the result that these are always installed at places where feeders are to be protected efficiently, reliably and economically. When suitably adapted to the line, ABBs Low Voltage HRC fuses guarantee maximum protection against all faults which may arise in practice. The protection comprises the range of small overcurrents as well as maximum short circuit currents. ABBs Low Voltage HRC fuses are current limiting.

Design
The main element of the fuse link, the selective fuse elements are directly connected to the knife contacts by spot welding. The ABB HRC fuse link insulators are made of ceramic. Their design matches with the individual load conditions and consequently guarantees faultless and reliable operations. ABB HRC fuses of standard design are manufactured with flag indicators on the upper end cap. After operation, the red coloured leaf spring tucks up and indicates the status of the operation.

Technical data
ABB Low Voltage HRC fuses are available for rated voltages 500/660/690 V; service category gL/gG, and are according to DIN VDE 0636 part 21; IEC 269-1/EN 60269-1; DIN VDE 0636 part 22. All fuse links according to VDE 0636 for rated voltages 500/660/690 V have a minimum breaking capacity of 120 kAeff .

Time-current characteristics
The time-current characteristics for HRC-Fuse Links type gL are represented as medium characteristics curves. These are within the cut-off range stipulated by VDE 0636/21. Deviations in the current co-ordinates may account to +/- 7 & maximum, ABB Fuse Links show a tolerance of +/- 5 %.

Virtual Pre-arcing time

Current limiting
The thermal and dynamic capacity of electrical switchgear components is determined by height of the peak value of the prospective short circuit current IS. The height of this peak short circuit current I S at a certain value of prospective current IP (sym. r.m.s.) depends on the moment of closing and the value of the d.c. component of that short circuit loop. High short circuit currents do not rise up to their peak value when ABB HRC-Fuse Links of appropriate rated current are used, but their increase is already limited. The current limiting effect starts at melting times approximately 5 ms and in case of high d.c. components already at melting times of 10 ms. The current limiting diagram shows the function of the prospective short circuit current I S depending on the prospective current I P (sym. r.m.s.) as two steep increasing lines (a and b). The coherence between the prospective current Ip (sym. r.m.s.) and the efficiency of current limitation (cut off current ID ) by ABB HRC Fuse Links is given by more flat running lines for the various fuse rated currents.
